1. Introduction - Welcome to fax 'n copy!
-----------------------------------------

fax 'n copy turns your scanner, printer and fax modem into a simle copy and
fax machine.

fax 'n copy uses the interfaces provided by Impos/2 and FaxWorks PRO,
therefore there are also some software requirements beside the
hardware requirements.

Why is there a version 2.0?
Version 1 of fax 'n copy was never released. Version 2 is the result
of the experiences from using and developing version 1. Version 2
was completely rewritten.

The author can be contacted through email:

how to phrase things better, feel free to mail me.

2. Software and hardware requirements
-------------------------------------

The following requirements, beside using Warp 3 (or higher), are
to be met:

2.1. Software
-------------

The following software packages are required for running of fax 'n copy (they
are not included):

- Impos/2 2.0 (and higher)

- FaxWorks PRO 3.0 (and higher) or PMfax 3.0 (and higher)
(for using the complete fax functionality)
Comment: The Lite-Version of FaxWorks can be used only in a limited degree.
  See text below.

The following, in the distribution included, programs are also necessary. Please
note that these programs are not part of fax 'n copy, but have to be installed
in to the same directory where fax 'n copy is.

- Go! Version 1.5
Go! is a helpful little utility, that can, beside many other things, show
a list of running processes or kill processes, that was written by
  Carsten Wimmer.

- tiffcp
tiffcp is a program from the TIFF-Library of Sam Leffler.

Important note:
===============
For the two programs above mentioned there a special license terms valid which
have to be noticed. The license that you get when registering fax 'n copy is
valid only for the program fax 'n copy and not for the two above mentioned
programs.

2.2. Hardware
-------------

For using fax 'n copy the following hardware requirements are to be met:

- Scanner supported by Impos/2

- Printer supported by OS/2

- Fax modem supported by OS/2 and FaxWorks PRO
  (for using the fax functionality)

3. Installation/Deinstallation
------------------------------

3.1. Installation using the installation program
------------------------------------------------

- Unzip all files in a temporary directory

- Start the installation program (install.exe)

- Follow the directions and enter all the necessary information

The installation program copies the following files into your Impos/2
directory:

  faxncopy.exe
  go.exe
  tiffcp.exe
readme.txt or liesmich.txt (depending on selected language)

Then the necessary objects will be created on your desktop and in the target
directory a INI-file will be created.

You can also manually install the program. Please copy all the above mentioned
files into your Impos/2 directory and create a program object for
'faxncopy.exe'.

3.2. Deinstallation
-------------------

If you want to deinstall fax 'n copy, simply delete all files (see list
above) and the objects created on you desktop.

4. How to use
-------------

4.1. Concept
------------

The idea behind fax 'n copy was to make the usage while operation as simple
as possible, especially for repeating tasks.
The users defines presets, which he can later select and then start with
a simple click. These presets are a combination of a data source and a target.
The scanner functions a the source and as a target you can define a printer,
your fax or the archive.

Therefore there is some little work to do before making your first copy:

4.2. Definition of presets
--------------------------

After the first program launch there are no presets defined. To define a
preset, please press button 'Settings...':

- On the notebook page 'Presets', enter a name in the entry field 'Name',
  e.g. 'Normal copy', 'Fax', etc.
- Choose from the Page size list the wanted format.

Note: In this version only A4 is possible. More formats (like Legal) will
  ===== be added soon.

- Choose from the scanner list a scanner and select the color mode.
- Enter the scan resolution value into the field 'Resolution'
- Select a target. You can choose a printer, the fax or the archive.
  - Printer: Please select the printer from the list.

Tip: Create for every needed print mode a separate print object, E.g.
==== An object for black/white printing, an object for color printing
or an object for high-quality printing.
In OS/2 this is very easy by copying your print object and then
change the job properties for each print object. Give the new
print objects names that help recognize the properties, like
'Color with 360dpi' or 'Black/White with 720dpi', etc.
Please change the job properties of the new printer objects through
Impos/2 (see also notebook page 'Device')

  - Fax: The scanned pages will be sent as fax. You will need FaxWorks PRO
         to use this function.

Note: Users of the Lite-Version can not use this function. But they can
use of course the printer 'FxPrint' as a target. As Impos/2 can
print only one page at a time, the pages have to be merged manually.

  - Archive: The scanned pages will be saved into the archive directory. The
archive directory can be changed on the notebook page 'General'.

  - Limit scan area to printable area
This option allows it to scan documents true to the original. True to the
original means in this case, that the copy reproduces the same proportions
and size correctly. The scan area will be restricted to the maximum
printable area. Therefore the printer margins has to be provided, they
can be found in your printer manual.
Everything that is beyond these margins will not be scanned and not be
printed. This has to be taken into account when choosing this option.
You can enter the values for each printer on the notebook page 'Device'.
The fax printer (mostly 'FxPrint') can be omitted.
If this option is not selected, then the complete page is scanned (e.g.
A4, 210x297 mm) and appears therefore slightly smaller when printed.

- If you have completed your preset, please select button 'Add'. You settings
  will be saved.
- If you want to save changes, please select button 'Save'.
- If you want to delete a preset, please select button 'Delete'.

Here again a summary:

- Add a new preset
  - Enter the name into the entry field 'Name'
  - Change all settings as wanted
  - Select button 'Add'

- Change a existing preset
  - Select preset from list
  - Change all settings as wanted
  - Select button 'Save'

- Delete a preset
  - Select preset from list
  - Select button 'Delete'

If you select 'OK' the settings dialog will be closed and the settings
will be saved. If you select cancel your settings will not be saved.

4.3. General
------------

You can find some general settings on the notebook page 'General'.

- Language
You can choose between English and German. The change will be active after
  a restart of the program.

- Archive directory
Please enter the directory where the documents should be saved to. If the
pathname is not valid, it appears in red color.

  - Save copy in archive
If you select this option scanned documents will be saved in the archive
    directory.
If you have selected 'Archive' as the target, the document will be saved
    regardless of this option.

- Show copy before printing
The scanned document will be opened before printing.

- Close Impos/2 at program end
Impos/2 has to be active while fax 'n copy is running. This option
closes Impos/2 when fax 'n copy is closed. Data that is not saved will
  be discarded.

- Close FaxWorks PRO/PMfax at program end
If you want to send a fax, FaxWorks PRO has to be active. This option
closes FaxWorks PRO when fax 'n copy is closed. Data that is not saved
  will be discarded.

4.4. Device
-----------

On the notebook page 'Device' you can find an overview of the devices
Impos/2 has recognized (scanner and printer). It shows their
capabilities and their actual status.

You can refresh the information by clicking on the button 'Refresh'.
This can be useful if you have added e.g. a new printer object or
powered on your scanner after starting fax 'n copy.

4.5. Copy, fax and archive pages
--------------------------------

Select a preset from the list and press button 'Start'.
If you select the option 'Multiple pages', you can scan more pages at
once. After each scan, you will be asked if you want to scan another
page.

4.6. Archive
------------

It is recommended to name the documents RIGHT AFTER the scan, to make
the recognition afterwards easier. You can open the documents by double-
clicking them. You can not open a document while a page is scanned.

IMPORTANT: If you change documents and save them with Impos/2, they can
========== not be recognized any more by fax 'n copy. Therefore change them
under a different name. These documents will not be in the
           archive anymore.

The description of the documents is also the longname of the document.
You can enter the description by using ALT+First Mousebutton.

4.6.1. Sorting
--------------

The sort order can be changed by selecting the popup menu or the main menu.
The sort criteria is the combination of 'Date', 'Time', 'Type' and
'Description'. If you select one criteria it is put at the beginning of the
list. This means if you select 'Time', the new sort criteria is now
'Time', 'Date', 'Type' and 'Description'.

If you select one or more documents from the archive, you can print, fax
or delete them.

4.6.2. Printing
---------------

If you have one or more pages selected for printing and pressed the
button 'Print...', the print dialog opens. Here you can choose a printer,
the number of copies and change the page order. The page order can be
change by drag and drop. You can open a page by double-clicking it, like
in the archive. If you select the number of copies bigger than 1, you
can select if you want to group the pages.

The print job will be started if you press 'Print'.

4.6.3. Fax
----------

If you have one or more pages selected for faxing and pressed the
button 'Fax...', the fax dialog opens. If FaxWorks was not active
it will be started in the background.

On the first notebook page 'Receiver' you have to enter the receiver
into the list. You can also use the phonebook of FaxWorks. You can
send a fax if there is at least one receiver in the list.

On the second notebook page 'Cover sheet' you can choose the cover
sheet. The default cover sheet is taken from FaxWorks. You can choose
from every cover sheet FaxWorks has recognized, but you can also
omit the cover sheet.
You can also choose if the default comment should be sent or if
you want to enter your own comment.

You can change the page order on the last notebook page by using
drag and drop. You can also open the pages by double-clicking.

By selecting the button 'Send' you start the fax process. The pages
are converted to the fax format (e.g. if they are colored) and then
faxed through FaxWorks. If the fax attempt fails (e.g. if the receiver
side is busy), you should make the next attempts using FaxWorks as the
fax is now in the log of FaxWorks.
