Speaking in 32 Bits....
                                                             by Marc Slifkin

Well, another PC Expo has come and gone.  IBM had a tremendous presence there;
the first vendor you saw as soon as you walked in. There wasn't a seat to be
had in the Warp Test Drive booth; people were lining up to see what it's like
to drive a true 32 bit operating system. As usual our man Phil did a bang-up
job up on center stage showing off Warp, Warp Connect and Lan Server 4.0. He
played to a capacity crowd that actually pushed outside past the doors. People
were packed in so tight you couldn't get a business card between them! One
IBM VP said that he couldn't move either left or right; he was stuck right
where he was! Team OS/2 was out in force as well; armed with Warp Full Pack
and portable CD Rom drives. We installed Warp, offered support and answered
questions where ever we could. It was an interesting couple of days to say
the least. IBM threw the Teamers a party Wednesday night with over 100 "pink
Ninjas" in attendance. Anyone interested in joining Team OS/2 should either
talk to Jeff Bakalchuck or send an E-Mail to Anita Venable at
teamos2@vnet.ibm.com.
Dr. Eric Shoenfeld will tell us all about Partition Magic, the program that
lets you grow or shrink partitions and convert from FAT to HPFS.
We had two winners of the coveted OS/2 Prism last month; Marcia Schlesinger and
Jonathan Kramer. Congratulations to Marcia and Jonathan!
Please call our PhoneMail number (516) 349-3670 for the latest news and meeting
location as well as to leave a short message to let us know if you received the
newsletter and if you will attend.

"Personal" OS/2

Congratulations to Maria and Dan White, the proud parents of Dan Jr. who made
his appearance June 23rd at 12:55 AM. Mother and child are doing very well,
but Daddy is absolutely fried! Rumor has it that Dan Jr. has already
installed Warp Connect on Daddies' computer!

Double congratulations to Thom Larsen, who became both a Grandfather and a
Father-In-Law in about a weeks time, and congratulations to Phil Darcy. Thom's
daughter Merideth gave birth to Bryce Thomas Chad Arkin on June 2nd, and
MaryBeth Larsen married Phil's son Mathew on June 10th. Talk about
Multi-tasking! Best wishes to all!

Minutes of the Last Meeting

Tony Pereira from Clear & Simple was our guest speaker last month. Tony worked
for IBM at one point and developed a suite of simple performance enhancement
tools to get OS/2 (2.0 at the time) to run acceptably on his customers'
hardware. These simple Rex x routines worked so well that Tony decided to
market them along with a book explaining the "science" of OS/2 performance
tuning. The current version (Performance Plus v 3.0) has many enhancements and
is more graphical than its predecessors. It's availab le in CompUSA for about
$29. Tony also founded the OS/2 Vendor Council, where ISVs can get information
and support from IBM.

User Column

Last month I mentioned OS/2 Connect, an "Electronic" magazine in the OS/2 INF
format. Another publication of this type is called EDM/2, or Electronic
Developer's Magazine for OS/2. It's published by IQPac Inc., and the publisher
is Larry Salomon Jr. Larry also coauthored a book titled The Art of OS/2 2.1 C
Programming. EDM/2 endeavors to answer questions on all aspects of PM
programming, and includes samples of code that are explained in the articles.
It also includes in-depth book reviews on current tit les in the world of OS/2.
There's something in there for the novice programmer as well as the
professional; and as with OS/2 Connect, the cost of the subscription is limited
to what it costs you to download it from either an FTP site or OS/2 BBS. It is
de finitely worth a look.

Local User Groups

The Long Island Computer Association General Meetings are held at the New York
Institute of Technology, Old Westbury campus. LICA meets each month on the
third Friday evening at 8:00 in building 300, Anna Rubin Hall. For information
call (516) 293-8368.

The Queensboro Community College PC User Group meets on the second Saturday of
each month in the basement of the Library Building at 10:00 AM. For
information call (718) 225-2369.

The Long Island PC User Group meets at Newsday on Pinelawn Road in Melville on
the second Friday of the month.

Web Site of the Month Check out http://www.xmission.com/~wwwads/ems. EMS puts
out a CD Rom full of OS/2 shareware, similar to the Hobbes CD.

OS/2 Warp Tip

If you want to reduce the amount of choices in your menus add the line
MENUSTYLE=SHORT to your CONFIG.SYS. It removes redundant options (Delete,
Print, Move, Copy, ect) from the menus.

Meeting Location

Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month starting at 6:30 PM for
the informal session and 7:00 PM for the main presentation. The meeting place
is at 2 Jericho Plaza, Jericho. It is the first large white building just
north and east of the int ersection of the L.I.E and Jericho Turnpike (Rte.
25) and is on the south side of the turnpike. Use exit 40 eastbound or
westbound. Enter at the rear of the building. Call (516) 349-3670 for up to
date meeting information, to leave messages or change of a ddress information.

Newsletter Distribution Recognizing that mail or FAX distribution has been
spotty, we will post an ASCII copy on various BBSs. The first appearance will
be on the Northsea Operations BBS at (516) 283-9631. At the main menu download
the file LIOS2ymm.ZIP (LIOS2510 for '95 Oct). A t year end we may package the
12 issue volume of newsletters in a file called LIOS2_95.ZIP. Use any word
processor or text editor to read or print the newsletter. For economy, call
before 8:00 AM or after 9:00 PM. Board Members
