During the past few weeks the following add-ons for DSTswitch have
been released too:

* DSTs Beat -- a Swatch Beat calculator that observes daylight saving

AFST Inc, has joined in a business partnership arrangement with
National DialUp Services and InnoVal Systems Solutions, to provide a
low-cost nationwide ISP service for OS/2 users. ISP800, a private
brand ISP for corporate customers, is inaugurating service for
consumers on January 3, 2000.

Extra special prices are available for any OS/2 user who
pre-registers for the service by December 30, 1999. In addition,
three subscribers will be selected, at random, from the first 100
OS/2 users who signup. These three subscribers will receive free ISP
service for one year until December 31, 2000.

Highlights of ISP800 service include:

Your choice of

- Unlimited 56K access through an 800 dialup number or unlimited
service using a local dialup number.

- A high performance and high capacity POP3 email mailbox

- SMTP outbound email

- Toll free 24/7 technical support

- Very low cost for OS/2 users. ISP800 may also be used with Linux,
Mac, and Windows95/98 client platforms.

- No signup fees. You may cancel the service at the end of any month.

Anyone who travels, uses the Internet from more than one permanent
location, or lives in an area not supported by a local access number,
is encouraged to use the 800 number. Performance on the 800 number is
equal to that of local access numbers since all connections are
automatically and instantly re-directed through a close-proximity
modem. Access with the 800 number is available anywhere in the United
States where a dial tone is available. THERE IS NEVER AN ADDITIONAL
FEE FOR USING THE 800 NUMBER TO ACCESS ISP800. Airfone (in plane
service) and some hotels do charge access fees when you dial an 800
number.

ISP800 Prices:

    Regular service: $19.95
    For all OS/2 Users: $15.95 ***

*** Anyone who pre-registers for the service by December 30, 1999,
will receive the first year of service for only $11.95 per month. You
must be an OS/2 user to pre-register at this price. Your
pre-registration must be received by 5:00pm on 12/30/99.

Additional email accounts are $3.95 per month. Limit is four
additional email accounts.

Please note: There is no direct USENET newsgroup access at this time.
If enough OS/2 users subscribe and there is sufficient interest,
ISP800 will add newsgroup access for OS/2 users. Deja (dejanews) and
other web-based newsgroup services may be used in lieu of standard
USENET.

For additional information, and to signup for ISP800, please visit
http://isp800.com/os2. In particular, see the price page and the FAQ
page. For additional information send an email to os2isp@innoval.com.

Serenity Systems markets a Managed Client(r) product which provides
significant benefits to business users. We selected OS/2 as our
desktop client for many reasons and one is the broad range of
application support provided.

However, we continue to receive requests to support Win32
applications. Often this request is in addition to the requirement to
run Presentation Manager or WorkPlace Shell applications, which are
frequently Line of Business Applications.

After reviewing the product solutions available, we determined that
the best response to this requirement would be a hardware
modification to the workstation, enabling the system to support a
host operating system and guest operating system. Release 1 of the
product is anticipated to support an OS/2 host and a Windows guest.
The OS/2 support includes WorkSpace on Demand and OS/2 V4 (Merlin)
with support for a Managed Client, run either as a diskless RPL
client or as a traditional "fat" client.

We have put an overview of this project on our web site
(http://www.Serenity-Systems.com/), with an associated questionnaire
which will help us through our product planning. Accessing the
document requires that you have a valid log-on for the site. You can
request a log on from Info@Serenity-Systems.com. Once you log on to
the site, click on the Project Concorde image and, if it is
appropriate, complete the questionnaire.

MAME stands for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator.

It allows you to play up to 1900 classic (and some not-so-classic)
arcade games from the 70's through the 90's from the comfort of your
OS/2 desktop.

The OS/2 version has been updated to the latest version of the MAME
core (.36 beta 11). If you are upgrading from beta 6 or higher, it
will automatically update your Quick List and scan for newly
supported games the first time you start it up so you don't have to
manually rescan everything from scratch and erase your Favorites
list.

The following items have changed since version .36 beta 10:

* Updated to MAME core version .36 beta 10
* Fixed a bug requiring an extra keystroke when the MAME core asks
you to type "OK" to acknowledge a message

A suggestion was made to show the joystick button status to the Input
Options dialog box. I haven't had the time to do this yet, but it
will be implemented by the next release.

Another suggestion was made to run LxLite on the executables, which I
have done. The executables shrank from 10MB to 4MB, although the ZIP
file is about the same size to download.

As always, you can download the latest release 486 and Pentium
optimized versions from:

Just uploaded to Hobbes is a small VIO tool for creating/manipulating
PSID files (C64 music for 6581 SID emulators like SID Play for OS/2
(http://sidplay.eaust.net/)).

This utility is intended for old Commodore 64 freaks (like the author
:-) who want to convert their C64 SID music to the PSID format used
by 6581 emulators like PlaySID and SID Play. It can also be used to
inspect existing PSID files, as well as for converting PSID files
back into C64 program files. Flexible cardware, complete with INF and
HTML documentation.

Today I've updated the OS/2 Switchboard again (9 new links added, 13
broken links removed, including IBM's OS/2 Warp home page that was no
longer available when I checked...).

Also a new page was added with a poll about how OS/2 users look at
the future now IBM's support for OS/2 is fading. Check it out and
let me know your opinion. The poll can be reached from the pull-down
menu on the OS/2 Switchboard main page at URL:

  http://shop.mensys.nl/switchboard/

PS: Rhe poll was originally designed for memebrs of the Dutch HCC
OS/2 User Group, but it is now in two languages. I will report about
the results here.

I have received a new entry in the MAMERun Joystick Device Driver
Contest from J Da Silva, an enhanced version of gamport.sys. The
total value of cash and prizes is now over $300 US. If you're sitting
around bored this holiday this might be a great way to help that big
credit card payment in January. (smile)

What is it?

Write your own joystick device driver for OS/2 and you could win $290
plus valuable prizes and earn the respect and gratitude of OS/2
gamers around the world! With the many new games available and the
advance of game controllers there arises a need for a better
joystick device driver than IBM's advanced joystick device driver.
Support for new controller features, such as 8+ buttons or USB, will
greatly enhance the OS/2 gaming experience for gamers as well as
developers.

For rules and other information check out:

  http://home1.gte.net/stefanj/contest.htm

I am looking for additional sponsors for this contest. If you would
like to contribute please go to:

  http://home1.gte.net/stefanj/sponsor.htm

Any questions can be sent to me at Stefanj@gte.net

The next meeting of the Southern California OS/2 User Group (SCOUG)
will be this Saturday, December 18, at 9:00 AM PST, at the IBM
offices located in Plaza Tower, 600 Anton Blvd., Costa Mesa, on the
2nd floor.

Last General Meeting of 1999; This is One You Don't Want to Miss!

The meeting topic is still TBA. However, you should definitely plan
on attending because December is always a fun meeting.

Raffle Prizes Wanted - Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Once again, as in years of
yore, we are soliciting your OS/2 hand-me-downs for the final raffle
of the year. You know what we're talking about - all those things
that are still good, but you don't use and they're taking up space,
collecting dust. If you don't have a use for them, but think some
other SCOUG members might, then bring them with you to the December
meeting.

After the main meeting, it's time for two of our SIGs:

As the year is drawing to a close, the Programming SIG wil take a few
moments to ponder Y2K issues.

The General Interest Group will also discuss topical issues.

Afterwards: No-host lunch and friendly chat at TGI Friday's across
the street or another local restaurant.

Internet SIG chats happen several times each week. Join them! (For
further info, go to http://www.scoug.com/chat/index.html).

Monday, December 20, 7 PM PST meetings:

Got problems with your system? Volunteers at the OS/2 Help Desk will
help you solve them. Bring your system and all related components
along with a detailed explanation of your problem.

The Networking SIG will be meeting in the Journalism room where they
will continue their efforts to set up and install a peer network. If
you are interest in how a network is built from the ground up, this
is your opportunity to get hands-on experience.

The Sundial SIG will resume in January.

When, where, and how to get there: SCOUG will be meeting on Saturday,
December 18, at 9:00 AM (PST) at the IBM offices located in Plaza
Tower, 600 Anton Bl., Costa Mesa, CA, on the 2nd floor. From I-405,
exit onto Bristol northbound (one exit NW of the I-405/Hwy 55
interchange). Turn right on Anton Blvd (the first signal north of
I-405). Go east 2 signals and turn right (you will see a TGI Fridays'
on your right, where our after-meeting lunch will be at).

Parking may be a problem due to the holidays. Our advice is to park
in the multi-level garage behind TGI Fridays' across Anton Bl. from
IBM. If the garage is staffed, tell them you are attending a meeting
at IBM. If past years are a valid indicator, the garage will not be
charging at the time you leave after the meeting.

For the OS/2 Help Desk and Networking SIG on December 20:

The Eastside Christian School, Heritage Campus, is at 2530 W. La
Palma Ave. in Anaheim. It is on the south side of La Palma Ave.
(about 200 ft. E of Magnolia) on the property of Grace Baptist
Church. There is a 2-story office building close to La Palma Ave.
with the address of 2528 up near the roof. Turn in (south) there.
Drive all the way to the back and park along the chain-link fence.
NOTE: There is a lot of freeway construction north of the school on
I-5 and the 91 freeways; some on/off ramps may be closed and/or have
detours. Check the SCOUG web site for updates, and leave yourself
plenty of time to find our SIG meeting location.

Further information (including driving directions) can be found on
the SCOUG web site at http://www.scoug.com. The driving directions
(http://www.scoug.com/directions.html) also include maps for the
general meeting and the Help Desk/Networking SIG that you can print
off as needed. Come and join us!

Every Monday, I'll be reporting on OS/2-related items for sale on
http://www.ebay.com and the comp.os.os2.marketplace newsgroup. Even
if you're not thinking about buying anything OS/2 related, you might
find something that catches your interest.

On eBay, there are several copies of OS/2 2.x, Warp 3, Warp 4, and
Lotus applications available for sale, as well as several OS/2 books,
mostly for OS/2 2.x or Warp 3.

To keep things simple, I will only be reporting on "interesting"
items - stuff that doesn't appear most weeks.

For starters, I'm selling my copy of DeScribe 5.0.6 word processor.
Auction ends tomorrow.

Also special this week is an IBM MWAVE DSP combination sound card and
fax modem, with the DSP developer kit for OS/2 (including assembler,
compiler, and debugger). It also comes with six manuals and drivers
for Win95 and OS/2 Warp. Sound Blaster emulation, hardware MPU-401,
wavetable MIDI, and a free MIDI cable.

This week we have: Comm Manager/2 1.0; BackMaster; and MS Excel.

For programmers, we have lots of stuff. Besides the aforementioned
MWAVE card with toolkit, there is: a few copies of Visual Age C++ 4.0
and 3.0; Microfocus Cobol; SourceLink; and a couple programming
books.

Those of you looking to sell your OS/2 related stuff, I strongly
recommend you put it on eBay and post an announcement on
comp.os.os2.marketplace. If you include the word "OS/2" in the title
of your description, I'll see it and include it in the next report.

If you're looking for OS/2 items on eBay, search on the phrase
("OS/2",OS2), including the parentheses.

I just checked out the ICQ/2 site and found v1.503j is available.

If you use ICQ and haven't tried ICQ/2, you should give it a go. It
doesn't keep popping up messages at you, but rather keeps them in an
IRC-Like window. It's pretty nice.
