Probably an RJ45 connector.

I doubt if you can use it. It sounds like the standard Wyse _terminal_
keyboard. I have several here for terminals, and doubt very much if
they are compatible with the PC keyboard interface.

That's because Warp 4 *is* a PnP aware OS. It just doesn't provide all the
junk that Win95 does. It's PnP configuration of peripherals is quiet and
behind the scenes. Also, it's not active except at installation, or when
you explicitly enable full hardware detection. It assumes (as a
well-behaved OS should, in my opinion) that things are configured correctly
once installed.

The caveat is that if you change the settings of a PnP device, you should
enable full hardware detection.

It is a keyboard from a Wyse ASCII terminal and probably not at all compatable
with an AT or PS2 keyboard port. Sorry.

For under $200 you can also get a network gateway/firewall device. The ADSL or
Cable modem ethernet goes in one side and your LAN is connected on the other
side. It will provide a DHCP server and port passage for generally about 8
inbound ports. Your internal network will likely be on a 192.x.x.* network.
Different units provide different functions. Or you can setup an Os2 or Linux
box as a firewall.

Subj: Re: WORM drive problem

Hi!

Awhile ago, I posted that I couldn't get my Corel 7010 WORM drive to work
under OS/2.

I fixed it!

There was nothing wrong with the drivers I was using. The problem was in the
disks themselves. Seems OS/2 can't read FAT-formatted WORM disks, so I used
the Adaptec "AFDISK" program, and reformatted them all as "OS/2
Superfloppies". Now, I have 27+ gig in storage available for my BBS! :)

Thanks to all who replied.

The easiest way to find out what driver you need is to list the dos drivers
for a name and type of the adapter.
After you know the name and type you can search for that driver.

This is done so that you can copy files from 1 floppy to another, OS/2 will
ask you to change floppy's during the copy.

If you have TCP/IP installed for the modem, it's not much different. You're
just switching devices that it uses to communicate with the Internet. Just
think if the NIC as a modem. Configure it, then use it much like the modem,
except no dialing required. If you get a static IP address, of course you'll
need to enter this information for the NIC.

Radio Shack CGP-220. Same mechanism as a QuadRam QuadJet and the IBM
JetColor, but different ROMs.

And while you are checking, see if there's a driver for a DMP-500

How did you get that past the security guards at the Smithsonian? I think
instead you would be better off locating a nice Lexmark that has OS2 drivers
and be done with it ;) That stuff goes way back before OS2 was ever dreamed of
and long before printers even standardized on a PC character set. Good luck...

Greetings,

I've been using a Lexmark 5700 with Warp 4. I installed the Win3.x
drivers for use by WinOS2. The combination has been working quite
well except for one thing: speed. Anyone know how to speed up
printing? What is particularly frustrating is when printing under
WinOS2, CPU usage goes through the roof and everything slows
to a crawl.

Thanks,
Greg

Hello All.

extract of my config.sys :
=====
basedev=7870.add  dated 08/04/99, for the aha2940uw (hd's, cd-rw, jaz)
basedev=aha152x.add /ET /L /V    for the aha1505 (scanner, drm1804x), lun scan
BASEDEV=OS2SCSI.DMD
BASEDEV=OS2CDROM.DMD
IFS=CDFS.IFS
basedev=os2aspi.dmd /all
=====

the aha2940uw works just fine as usual, nothing special to report
the aha1505 reports the 2 lun of the pionneer - yes it has only 2 for 18 cd's!
- and... nothing further! under Dos, the Dos pionneer driver attributes a
drive letter to each cd... nothing such here, in Warp 4 (fp10, latest in
french version), I have only 1 drive letter and of course no access to it.
any further idea/tip/proposal/solution (better! :) is most than welcome!

btw, if anyone ever got that cd-changer working under warp on an ibm ps/2 with
ibm scsi controller, that's also good, I have and use such a pc for homework,
it could go to the bbs if required :)

btw, the Diamond A90 (savage4) works great in 1024x768x16m@75hz on my 17"
screen. Nice to have such great drivers for a quite fast card!

Put a check mark for disabled in the Win-OS2 driver for LexMark 5700.
It might speed things up little for printing in Win-OS2.
Make sure you have "Fast Print direct to Port" checked
in Control Panel & Connect options for printer.

This page might help a little.

Actually, it came off a Wyse 286 pc so I'm still hopeful. The mobo had

Well, I didn't answer the question at first because I thought somebody
would be sure if there was or wasn't such an adaptor.

However, while working at a computer service company I *know* I have
seen such an adaptor. The thing is, I don't remember off hand if it
was an adaptor Wyse/IBM or vice versa.

Having seen and used such an adaptor I know there is such a thing and
that it works. I think it was used with Wyse PC's when they came on the
market and still may have used the old style keyboard.

OTOH, there may have been different keyboards intended for the terminal
and the PC's.

A PC connector has 5 pins but only 4 carry any information so a RJ-45
connector would carry them all.

Have a nice day,

Holger

 JD> has only 2 for 18 cd's! - and... nothing further!

I have never seen the 18 disc Pioneer, but I do remember talk about it many
years ago. I may have the story wrong, so maybe someone else can verify this.
My information suggested that the drive used 2 drive letters, one letter was
used as a "control" drive, the other for the actual CD. EG - if the 2 drive
letters were F: and G:, drive F: would actually be a memory drive with 18
directories labelled something like CD01, CD02 etc to CD18. If you wanted to
access CD09, then you would change to the directory F:\CD09, and then the CD
in bay 9 would be loaded into drive G:.

While this methodology would save using a lot of drive letters, it made use of
the changer in some environments a bit "awkward", and at all easy.

I have no factual information about this other than what was reported in a
message Echo some years ago, but if you have 2 drive letters, see if one of
them is NOT actually a real drive, but appears to be a virtual drive of some
sort.

I would be interested to hear the results of this.................pk.

If it is slow after it is spooled, add an /IRQ parameter to your
PRINT01.SYS line in CONFIG.SYS, on my dual celeron, printing brings
things to a crawl without the IRQ parameter. In Windows, turn off print
directly to port, make sure it is set to print to LPT1 not
LPT1.OS2. Things that make printing (before it goes to the spooler) take
a lot of CPU are the dithering options (magic square is fastest but
diffusion is prettiest) your driver may not have settings for dithering.
On my Canon bubblejet, the newer OMNI drivers are much slower than the
older (Warp 3) ones, I doubt this is your problem, but it is something
to look at.

I thought there was s-ware to do this also, but I was told it only used 1
drive letter with a disk label for each disk. Which ever label you used would
load that disk. I never found anyone actually doing this.

We had a 21 disk CD tower at work that hit disposal. I wish I had room to
keep it so I could see how it worked. I saved most of the drives, and the 3
SCSI controllers that were daisy chained in it.

JD>that's what I look for.... thanks for the tip!

If you find it please let me know where. I could at some time want to
use it.

However, as I have previously mentioned there is a DOS utility that can
assign directories instead of drive letters. Knowing that most DOS
utilities work fine under OS/2, why don't you try that.

KS> On the other hand, as you rightly put, the Nakamichi MJ-5.16 is a
KS> fiver and 5 driveletters are properly assigned on boot.

JD>well, I don't get more than 1 drive letter, that's what's wrong,

I do have and use the MJ5-16.si without difficulties in both DOS and
OS/2 and I get all five drive letters.

Did you receive the installation disk for the Nakamichi?

In DOS config.sys you must have these lines:

DEVICE=c:\desq\loadhi.sys /r:2 c:\pcdos\aspi7dos.sys /D /L
DEVICE=c:\desq\loadhi.sys /r:1 c:\mj_util\mjaspi.sys /D:MJ_01 /B
LASTDRIVE=T rem or whatever you want your last driveletter to be

If you don't have the ADAPTEC SCSI controller AHA-2842 you must use the
proper aspi?dos.sys file.

In the DOS autoexec.bat file you must have:

c:\desq\loadhi /r:1 C:\PCDOS\mscdex.exe /d:mj_01 /m:4 /L:P /E /V

Please note that I load the files high with DesqView.

For OS/2 I don't have any corresponding entry in the OS/2 config.sys and
still it works. However, some people insist that you MUST have the /ET
parameter after the AIC????.ADD file for the Adaptec controller.

If you have another controller, I can't help.

Have a nice day,

Holger

 GW> Get a faster CPU! :-(

With a 450i and 256MB RAM the Lexmark 5700 can still take in excess of 15
minutes to print a single page.

That was so much longer than the Lexmark false advertising of 4PPM that we
called Lexmark T/S, and were told the advertised rate could be achieved with
their test conditions. While T/S was still on the phone we printed their
supplied test, which was a very small box about 2" square, and that took about
1-1/4 minutes IIRC. That left me to assume their "marketing" test conditions
probably consisted of a single line of text.

Lexmark's recommendation was to return the printer to the dealer it was
purchased from for a refund or exchange for another printer such as their
Optra series (which is not a WinPrinter.)

The Lexmark rep even said he hadn't heard any complaints about the speed of
printing. Although I know from previous calls to Lexmark that some of their
other reps have heard of those problems. I guess some of the reps either
have selective hearing (only hear what they want to hear) or have been
dealing only with users who have not used any other printer. Or more likely
assume all their customers are WinXX users who have a much higher acceptance
of BS.

Anyway my sister-in-law (the 5700 is her printer and so is the 450i with
256MB RAM) is satisfied with it. OTOH we were discussing Linda's comment
about WinPrinters, and since she has a 386-25, I half-jokingly commented she
could probably start printing a page and come back the middle of next week to
find it still going and going...

GU>> printing under WinOS2, CPU usage goes through the roof and
GU>> everything slows to a crawl.

 GW> It will :-(.

Yep, no matter how much CPU power you have.

IMO a faster CPU is not a solution for either printing speed or multitasking
while printing with the Lexmark 5700.

The EggHead/Online auction has sent me 2 E-Mail announcements; 1 referring to
over 40 the other referring to over 100, reconditioned Epson Stylus 700 Color
printers. I don't know how much $ they went for. But that might be a
solution.

I really love my HP4L that can really print 4PPM, even if it is only B&W.

Thanks and Good Luck, Andy Roberts

But it *should* be set to LPT1.OS2 in "DOS" applications, right? I've
experienced similar s-l-o-w printing from DOS and Windows apps, even still
with /IRQ added. But the LPT1.OS2 .vs. LPT1 issue still seems vague.

I thought that TVFS is freeware, but I'm not sure. I don't use TVFS myself.
You can problably find TVFS on Hobbes, I think?

have you assigned an IRQ to the printer driver? That should lower the CPU
usage and should slow down other process much less

That issue is extremely vague to Lexmark also. Their driver for the 5700
required the Win-OS/2 Control Setup Printer Default to be set to LPT1 in order
to perform the initial alignment, but it won't print anything else that way.
To print from any other app, the Win-OS/2 Control Setup Printer Default must
be set to LPT1.OS2

AFAIK Lexmark is the only OEM that got that screwed up. AFAIK normally other
printers do use LPT1.OS2 for the Win-OS/2 Control Setup Printer Default for
everything.

I notice Jerry didn't do the alignment under Win-OS/2. IMO that alignment is
necessary under Win9x, native OS/2 and Win-OS/2 (all 3) individually (every
time you change an ink cartridge), since the setting changes are saved in
software not hardware.

BTW, you can FREQ Jerry's Lx57Win.Zip from me, or I'll gladly File Attach to
E-Mail.

Another BTW, although Jerry has had the 5700, he recently bought a Lexmark
Optra. I guess he didn't want to get burned twice. <g>

Thanks and Good Luck, Andy Roberts

Check your CONFIG.SYS file for a line like:

   BASEDEV=PRINT01.SYS /IRQ

If it doesn't have the /IRQ, add it.

Then check that you have the fast printing option setup in the
   WinOS/2 Control Panel settings.

"single line of text" is probably quite right! <g>

It's so discouraging to hear that you're having problems with the Lexmark. I
was going to opt for the Z31 or the Z51 model in the very near future. I
specifically want to stick with Lexmark if only for the waterproof ink. And..
there are about 3 other people I know (who live close) who have Lexmarks too
(although they primarily use them on Win95 machines). The idea was to buy our
same-model cartridges in bulk to save money.
