Hi,

I have released an ODBC driver for mSQL. It can be downloaded from

	http://www.quasarbbs.com/yuri

MiniSQL is a small and light weight relational database management
system. It uses SQL as query language.

The ODBC driver has been tested with VisualAge C++ 4.0 samples and it
is working. Actually it doesn't work with StarOffice 5.1a

Bye,

source code of the VRML viewer offered by Blaxxun
(http://www.blaxxun.com/).
Though I'm not for sure if the source can build
the executable for OS/2 platform, it should be
a great contribution to open source community.

Another update to the OS/2 Device Driver Pak, this time
it is dated October 26, 1999. The only real update that
I could see though was a 2nd beta of the new IBMATAPI.FLT
driver for the ZIP 250.
Also, you might want to checkout Daniela's Engert's
IBMATAPI.FLT replacement file (DANIADSK.ZIP) at Hobbes

With the official DOS version less than 12 hours old, I've completed
my port of MAME .36 beta 8.

As always, you can get it from

  http://emuos2.vintagegaming.com/

MAME stands for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator.

It allows you to play your favorite classic, and some not-so-classic
arcade games (from the 70's through the 90's) from the comfort of
your OS/2 desktop.

The OS/2 version has been updated to the latest version of the MAME
core (.36 beta 8). If you are upgrading from beta 6 or beta 7, it
will automatically update your Quick List and scan for newly
supported games the first time you start it up so you don't have to
manually rescan everything from scratch and erase your Favorites
list.

In addition to the new games supported, some bugs were fixed from the
previous beta. Namco System 1 games (such as Pacmania) should now be
working again, and The Simpsons now has correct graphics emulation on
the DreamLand stage if you have the patience to get that far.

  Junk Spy (http://www.sundialsystems.com/junkspy/) has a
new web site feature as of today that lets you send yourself
test messages and watch as they're filtered out of your
email.

"You now have a way to see Junk Spy in action," says
Rollin White of Sundial Systems. "You can watch Junk Spy
catch and divert junk mail right away. This way you'll know
it's working properly and that your junk mail problems are
finally on the way to being solved."

Junk Spy filters junk mail as it arrives from your mail
server and before it gets to your email program.

"Users of the free prerelease version of Junk Spy can now
run this instant junk mail demonstration of what Junk Spy
can do," says Randell Flint of Sundial. "And if you don't
yet have Junk Spy, you can download the prerelease right
now."

Details are on the Junk Spy home page at

          http://www.sundialsystems.com/junkspy/

"The Junk Spy prerelease has been phenomenally
successful," says Flint. "Everyone wants a copy, and
everyone is extremely pleased to see major new OS/2 software
on the market. We already have businesses using it so
their employees don't have to wade through dozens of junk
messages. We have families using Junk Spy so their email
isn't full of trash and their kids don't see the garbage
that comes along."

Junk Spy is a hands-off answer to the junk mail problem.
It uses a logic engine that's more powerful than simple mail
filters to keep junk mail in check.

"We continually check new junk mail and update the
database of clues that Junk Spy uses," adds Rollin White.
"We'll catch the new junk mail tricks as soon as the
spammers think of them."

Download the Junk Spy prerelease and make your email more
productive again. It's another solution from Sundial -
"Sundial Has The Answers".

I just noticed at the Enlightenment web site that the newest release
has specifically had modifications to make it compile and run on
Xfree86/2 and advertises such. Go get this great window manager now:

Enlightenment is a window manager (changes the look and feel) for
most common *nix systems running Xfree86, and now apparently OS/2
also.

I have just uploaded beta 2 of MAMERun to the /pub/incoming directory
of Hobbes:

  http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/

Final expected placement is:

  http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/apps/emulator/

You can also find it at:

  http://home1.gte.net/stefanj/mrunb2.zip

New:
* Fixed bug with the "Flip Y" button
* Fixed clipping and scaling problem with MAMERun bitmap
* Removed the need for an external bitmap
* Removed the maximize button from all windows
* Removed the minimize button from modal windows
* Added Norm Ross's STARTD program
* Customized the DOS environment to allow the running of large ROMs
and enhance emulation speed

MAMERun should now allow any ROM to run that works with MAME.

What:

MAMERun is a FREEWARE PM front end for the DOS version of MAME
(Multi. Arcade Machine Emulator). A front end is a program that makes
it easier for the user to interface with his application, which
usually has a command line interface. MAME is a very popular emulator
that allows you to run thousands of classic arcade games on your PC
(if you own the ROMs). You can find the MAME homepage at:

  http://mame.retrogames.com/

The Official (and very good) OS/2 PM port of MAME was done by Marty
Amodeo and is at:

  http://emuos2.vintagegaming.com/

Requirements:

OS/2
MAME for DOS (I used version .36 beta 7)
DOS Support installed
RexxUtil
joystick device driver ( for joystick support, download from hobbes
or DDPAK)
ROMs (DO NOT ASK ME FOR, OR WHERE TO GET ROMS!!)

WHAT'S NEW?

DTB now searches the chosen drive for ALL Desktops when using the
"Get suggested" button to get file listings. We have also rearranged
the controls in the "AutoStart" settings page and have added the
ability to add files by filter. Wildcards are supported when
searching by filter. Examples: C:\TextFiles\*.TXT or C:\T*.E?E /S

ABOUT DTB

DeskTop Backup is a simple tool that works with InfoZip's Zip and
Unzipsfx to build a self-extracting zipfile containing your essential
desktop and other configuration information. There is no magic or
slight of hand concerning it's use and one can do the same work from
the command line along with the InfoZip utilitities. DeskTop Backup
merely makes it a bit more automated and will also help you decide
what files may be important to archive.

DTB will also help find and list important files on your drive so you
are able to do a more detailed backup than the standard OS/2 system
desktop archive will give you.

You may add to the "suggested" file listings or do a separate setup
of your own important files and directories as well. Such as? Well...
maybe you want to do an archive of business correspondance or maybe
back up a development directory every so often. You can do them on
demand or automatically as well.

Saving several distinctive backup setups to be performed on demand or
automatically is easily handled by DTB. You can also scan the chosen
drive for existence of suggested files whenever you feel an update of
the information is needed. (new files important to your desktop may
have appeared since the last setup)

As usual, we try to stay away from cryptic scripts etc so "AutoStart"
backups are simple point and click setups that update your situation
automatically with just a mouse click. You can also save multiple
archive setups and recall them at will as well as setting the
scheduler to run automatically at startup to archive by "days between
archives" or "day of the week".

DeskTop Backup is only $15 and is available online at BMT Micro:

What is the OS/2 Around the World site?

I frequently run across OS/2 users that don't know some of the good
sites for info, games, config help, etc. I thought I could post on
BAOS/2 a few sites a week to help spread the word.

Development on v3.0 of MainActor/2 has been cancelled due to software
tools problems. They do seem to still be keen on OS/2, so I'm sure
any help they can get would be appreciated.

Below is the discussion at MainConcept's site
(http://www.mainconcept.de/) posted 31 October 1999 11:58:

sorry to say that you are right and we have cancelled v3 due
to many problems with VisualAge v4 for OS/2.

We are focusing on Qt for later MainActor versions.

Sorry, maybe there will be a way to get the Qt version
running under OS/2. There are ways to get X Applications to
work and we will look into this.

I'd like to announce the release of ConfigEdit/2 version v1.3.

ConfigEdit/2 is a config.sys database manager which can auto-generate
config.sys files from a database which can be either imported or
created by hand. It can be used to hold multiple config.sys files and
generate new ones. Also manages OS/2's recovery choices!

In a recent WarpCast posting (Aurora Client announcement:
http://www.os2ss.com/warpcast/wc4321.html) we said, in part, that:

There IS a service offering from IBM for installation and support
of an official Aurora Client to be officially announced within the
  next couple of days.

This may have been incorrect or misleading. Here are the real facts,
straight from Steven King (the person named as the source in the
original message):

The posting was not reviewed by us and is a bit misleading. We do
offer customized installation services for Warp Server for
e-business where we can assist the customers in installing only
those components that they need. In some cases, the customers want
to kernel, LVM, and JFS .... but not much more. So we assist them
in the use of custom install (attended and unattended) to achieve
the desired end content. But ..... the pricing for the software
license is no different than the normal server. They may qualify
for discounts based on Advantage points but the tables are no
different than for the server solution. We do not have an Aurora
  client pricing model.

  Sorry for the confusion!!!!!

For additional information on the services offerings see:

    http://www-4.ibm.com/software/os/warp/services/

URL of my OS/2 Switchboard website at:

http://shop.mensys.nl/switchboard

From that moment on, the 'old' adress at
worldonline.nl was rerouted to the URL
above. Since my account at worldonline ended
on november 1st, this rerouting is no longer
available. Please update your bookmarks if
you haven't done so earlier...

The OS/2 Switchboard is updated almost

Every Monday, I'll be reporting on OS/2-related items for sale on
http://www.ebay.com and the comp.os.os2.marketplace newsgroup. Even if
you're not thinking about buying anything OS/2 related, you might find
something that catches your interest.

On eBay, there are several copies of OS/2 2.x, Warp 3, Warp 4, and Lotus
applications available for sale, as well as several OS/2 books, mostly for
OS/2 2.x or Warp 3. Recently, I've seen a lot of people try to sell user
manuals and "license packs" for various older versions of OS/2.

Starting this week, I won't be reporting on auctions for Drive Image or
Borland C++ books, since these items seem to be always for auction.

There's not much this week: Comm Manager/2, IBM and McAfee anti-virus, DB2/2
1.0, Lantastic, and Colorworks 1.0. There's a package deal of several
versions of OS/2, FaxWorks Pro, DeScribe Voyager, GalCiv 2, SmartSuite, and
some CD-ROM's.

Someone is also selling an "Orange386 OS/2 Coprocessor 1MB", which is either
a 1MB RAM upgrade for some really old computers or it's a co-processor with
OS/2 support. Unfortunately, the seller doesn't respond to emails, so if
anyone knows what it is, please tell me. Considering the seller has over
6,300 responses and 100+ items for sale at any given time, I suspect that
the seller has no idea what it is. Caveat emptor.

For collectors we have an OS/2 jacket, just in time for Winter.

For programmers, we have: Borland C++ 2.0 for OS/2 (yes, the software, not
just the books) and Brief 3.1.

On comp.os.os2.marketplace, we have: Borland C++ 2.0 (software?), DUX
American dictionary, Links/2, some Lotus software, some Warp 3 CD's.

We finally have something worthwhile on Yahoo. Last week we had some
version of FaxWorks, and this week we have a book on PM programming.

Those of you looking to sell your OS/2 related stuff, I strongly recommend
you put it on eBay and post an announcement on comp.os.os2.marketplace. If
you include the word "OS/2" in the title of your description, I'll see it
and include it in the next report.

If you're looking for OS/2 items on eBay, search on the phrase ("OS/2",OS2),
including the parentheses.

There's a new release of Audio/Data-CD-Creator avaiable:

http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Sector/5785/cdrecord/cdrecordmain.htm#au
diocdcreator

Audio/Data-CD-Creator is a set of WPS-classes working as a front-end
for CDRecord/2 (a free CD recording program). Create your
single/multisession data CDs and audio CDs (only TAO supported)
entirely via drag and drop. This front-end is of course fully WPS
aware and fits seemlessly into your system. Full source code is
provided.

New with this version:

-Allow spaces in audio folder names
-Progress bar for audio CD writing
-Folder backgrounds (Thanks to Arjen Meijer)
-Different cdrecord options for audio and data folders
-Fixed Bug: Audio-CD-C lost setting for tracknumbers
-Code cleanups and preparation for NLS
-Removed member function cwLoadIniValues()

A new version of the Larsen Commander has been released. This is
version 0.99.8, which is expected to be the last beta before version
1.0. You can download it and find more information at:

  http://home.sol.no/~leilarse/lcmd/index.html

Larsen Commander is a fine 32-Bit GUI File Manager for OS/2 Warp that
has a "look and feel" that is much like the famous Norton Commander.
The most notable difference is that Larsen Commander is pure GUI and
still has a built in command line and a scrollable console monitor.
Powerful, nice and snappy.

In addition to their sound drivers, Creative Labs will apparently
also release the source to their dxr2 DVD decoder drivers. It will be
posted at:

  http://opensource.creative.com/

Not to be left out, Aureal will be releasing source for their sound
card drivers also:

  http://www.ga-source.com/all/news/bits/10+01+1999/15:44:17.shtml

Looks like there will be plenty of opportunity for OS/2 device driver
programmers to gain the respect and admiration of their fellow users.

Further to an earlier post on Warpcast
(http://www.os2ss.com/warpcast/wc4354.html) here are some more
details with regard to the demise of MainConcept's
(http://www.mainconcept.com/) MainActor Video Sequencer for OS/2,
clipped from an E-mail reply from MainConcept Germany.

Here is a short statement regarding our OS/2 involvement.

  The Short Term
  --------------

We are sorry to say that our OS/2 development is on hold. We were
developing v3 of MainActor/2 for OS/2, however we had that many
problems with IBMs new VisualAge C++ v4 for OS/2 that we were
unable to proceed with the development. Working around these
problems would have meant much, much work for us. Should a new and
improved version of VisualAge C++ v4 for OS/2 see the light of day
we will start again on this.

  The Long Term
  -------------

We are switching compiler and object classes for MainActor. Version
3 of MainActor is based on IBM VisualAge and OpenClass which gave
us Windows and (we thought) OS/2 compatibility.

Future version of MainActor (starting with v3.5) are now based on
egc / gcc / VisualC as compilers and Qt as object classes. This
gives us Windows / Unix (Linux) compatibility. egc / gcc are
available for OS/2, however Qt is not. For more information about
Qt please have a look at <http://www.troll.no>. Should an OS/2
version of Qt see the light one day, we will surely provide OS/2
  versions again.

We are very sorry to discard OS/2 in the long term, being OS/2
users since the first versions of OS/2 were around, however we have
to think about the future of our company and Linux is a fastly
growing market which promises to give us some revenue in the future
(which the OS/2 market is unable to provide currently).

  Thanks for your interest.
