I think the point being made is that not ALL internal modems require special
software to run. I have an internal modem that is regular ISA Legacy. It's
physically jumpered to Com2, irq3. Linux sees this modem just fine!

Now there are some modems that require special software (99.9% of them are
WinModems anway, and those aren't modems! They're Scrap!), but there are also
many that don't.

It seems as though there are still real internal modems out there, but not all
suppliers keep them in stock, and not all manufacturers make them. Rockwell,
for example, apparently only makes internal Winmodems, though it does make
real external modems.

Also, it seems that many computer suppliers fit Winmodems by default, and
don't tell you that that is what they are fitting.

The moral of the story is - if you are buying a computer with a modem fitted,
always ask if it is a real modem unless you don't mind being dependent on
software drivers that may not be available if you change or upgrade your
software.

Keep well,

Subj: Weird problem

Hello All.

I'm using GoldEd/2 3.0.1 in a VIO window... it works great except when I close
the program and Squish/2 goes to toss, it tosses and generates a SYS 3175
error. When I close the popup error, everything functions as normal.

It's very odd and was wondering if any of you have had this problem. This
ONLY occurs when I'm running GoldEd/2 in a window.

Yes, I've posted this to TUB too, but I'm just checking to see if anyone else
using this combo may have seen the same problem.

Later,
Sean

thres plenty of REAL internal modems still available , and also for cheap
prices. rmember that the current bill gates fans all want 56K - but 56K
is not a lot of use for BBS to BBS or BBS to user connections as it can only
be used BBS to ISP so you may find a 33.6 going cheap .

Ive actually got a USR 56K internal modem in my other PC here . try the
3com web page for details

yes I agree - ive had three modems on GENBOARD here two internals and an
external plus an SIO driven virtual as com4 - no problems with any of
them. - just RTFM and get the set up accurate to start with

I don't have drivers for my modem (A-Open v.90)... AT&F works (although I use
at&fv1w2m0 for mine, since it reports actual connect speeds and turns the
speaker off)...

I was having this problem with Telegard under Dos Session. I never found out
why but was told it could have been a memory problem?

Other than that, I can't help you.

I'm running a similiar setup and have no problems. I'm using sq386p.exe to
toss the messages and not the squishp.exe. Have you tried switching
executables.

On the other hand with external modems you can support *8* modems with
*one* slot. Or even more if you hook them up via terminal adapters to
your LAN card.

Rockwell don't make modems at all. They are chipset makers. Many internal
modems using Rockwell chipsets are *true* modems - I have three here, 2 Pace
and 1 Zoom.

Be lucky,
