We were referring to the BBS door side, not the reader side.  There are
several readers around, including MultiMail, and even the OS/2 version of
BlueWave.

That important piece of info got lost before I read it.

However, I should point out that I use the maximus/BWave 'local download'
facility, and then read my mail with BWave. This can be done over a network
if you use NetBIOS, and maybe other networking technology, but I have
not tried any others.
