Subj: OS/2 Antivirus Tools

From: Uwe Pilgram <Uwe.Pilgram@t-online.de>

Hi folks,

A few days ago, I tried to buy a copy of Norton Antivirus for OS/2. I
was surprisingly told by Symantec, that this is only sold as a pack for
10 PCs via their large account sales reps.

Is there anybody who knows about an OS/2 antivirus tool?

If IBMer read this note: Why do You fool your customers like this? IBM
has sold out IBM Antivirus to Symantec and they ruined the product.
Another way to kill OS/2. Sponsored by Billy?

Regards
Uwe

Tell Symantec to STICK IT and locate McAfee on Hobbes. Worlds better.

Or what about trying Norman Virus Control for OS/2 ??

And they are developing a realtime scanner for OS/2 as well. There
have been a long thread about this here earlier.....

Has anyone ever come across a *text-mode* dBASE clone for OS/2?

..ideally, one which will read dBASE programs.

Wonder what Borland have done with dBASE IV... I'm surprised there isn't
a GNU version around.

I don't know how "cloned" you want it, but look at Alpha4 from
Alphasoft.

Thanks for reminding me about Alpha.

I read about Alpha4 in OS/2 Magazine several years ago, but when I spoke
to someone in their UK office, they had never heard of an OS/2 version.

Do they have a web site?

Yea, it's at http://www.alphasoftware.com

You can't get the newest version (Alpha5) They made an Alpha4 v6.I use
it all the time, just wish they would have kept updating it.

I'm not a lawyer, but I've paid a few of them enough to send their
kids to lawschool too, but I'm certain that the only "someone" who can
put something in the public domain is the owner, or failing that, the
ultimate expiration of any copyrights, patents, or lapses through
disuse of trademarks or servicemarks involved.

On the other hand, there is a definite gray class of software that
comes under the heading of Abandonware, growing all the time, and as a
strictly practical matter if no one is actively defending their
property rights there is no other mechanism that will do so on their
behalf.

It's not like the police department throwing you in prison for
stealing someone's car, regardless of whose it is, and always on the
lookout for stolen cars and the thieves that steal them. I've looked
around and haven't come up with a single case of a defunct company
coming alive to prosecute someone for distributing abandoned software
for free, and I haven't heard of existing companies going after people
distributing copies of old versions of current products, or
discontinued products. (And if such cases exist, I'd like to know
about them.)

This is a reply to a query I sent to Alpha software regarding availability

Alpha no longer has an OS/2 version of software. The program has been

After doing some research on this subject, I have decided on Norman
Antivirus. Look at:

http://www.norman.no/

for more details.

Symantec doesn't seem to want my OS/2 business, so I have purchased,
and installed norman AV, which seems to work very well, and does have
a good reputation for finding, and curing, viruses.

I also intend to take about a dozen potential Norton AV customers
(windows, and OS/2 users) with me (former IBM AV users). Symantec
doesn't want my OS/2 business, so, obviously, they don't want my
friend's business either. (I wonder if they will notice???)

Just my C$.03 ($.02 US)...

Can anyone tell me about Total Results Inc? I haven't come across
the company before or any survey about Palm integration with WPS.

Do they have a web site - there was no mention of one in the article.

I would personally love to get hold of a syncroniser for PalmPilot <->

so maybe they could be persuaded to develop one.

The StarOffice suite which can be downloaded for free from Sun has a
PalmPilot synch function although I have to say I had little luck in
getting it to work.

Yo John,
Have you got one of the gadgets. I was thinking to treat myself to a late
Xmas
present. Which pal pilot would you suggest (model) or which one looks more
likely to
communicate with OS/2?

Is there much point in buying the IBM rebranded pilot?

Thanks
Charles

Ta John.

I located both the Dabs 3com and from IBM direct their version (same price,
but like you said Black and IBM on it).
:-)

What minimum accessories are necessary? do we need cradles, serial cable for
connecting to a pc, or the basic kit
is suffient.

I am not talking about modems, cases etc.

:-)

The Palm V comes with a cradle, serial connector and an absolutely useless
CD which I resent having to pay for as it includes software which won't work
on my system.

Subj: setting up a network printer on OS/2 side to print to NT Printer.

From: "Kerry Lord" <klord@bhbt.com>

Does anyone know how I can set up my OS/2 box to print out to a printer with
an IP on an NT network?

Please use exact steps, because I'm a newbie to OS/2..

Thanks!
