Just been there and found this:-

30L8366 VisualAge C++ Professional for OS/2 and for
Windows NT V4.0 - Upgrade from VisualAge C++
for OS/2 V3.0 or for Windows V3.5, Microsoft
                Visual C++ or Borland/Imprise C++                    $239.00

My question is, do you know what you get, ie is it a full installation
and secondly, what qualifies and what proof of ownership is required to
install it?

I have a copy of Borland C++ V3.0 amoungst my collection of old compilers,
but the nearest thing to a registration number I can find is on the 5 1/4"
installation disk (still unopened).

Does anyone know whether this would qualify and whether this only
applies for US / Canada?
I'm in Germany and I haven't seen many IBM products on offer here lately.

Good point... I'm also wondering if my ownership of C Set++ v2.1 would
qualify for the upgrade, or if it's _only_ for VAC++ 3 users...

Perhaps I'd be better off hunting for v3 on ebay in any case...

Subj: Problem running CVS client

From: Dag Bjerkeli <dag@inputdata.no>

Hi,
I have some problems getting the cvs version for OS/2 to work correctly.

Some times cvs wont return. Like using 'cvs login', the command will
not
terminate after hitting enter after the password. Sometimes deleting
the
empty .cvspass file in my home directory solves that problem. But
I have not been able to perform a 'cvs commit'. The command
wont terminate. 'cvs update' does work sometime.

I think that there are something that I have missed somewhere that is
causing these
problemse. Using 'cvs commit' at the server (still using the pserver
options)
does work quite nice.

What I have is the Halibut release (1.10) from hobbes.

I'm running this on a Warp4 with fp12 installed and the server running
on a Linux box. That version is 1.10.5.

Version of EMX is (from emxrev)
EMX : revision = 60
EMXIO : revision = 60
EMXLIBC : revision = 60
EMXLIBCM : revision = 62
EMXLIBCS : revision = 62
EMXWRAP : revision = 60

CVS settings that I use are:
set cvsroot=:pserver:dag@cvs:/home/cvsroot
set CVSEDITOR=epm /m

A question regarding GUI versions of cvs client. I have tried to use
the jCVS client. Along with the OS/2 cvs distribution there are some
patches for jCVS 4.7.2, but the most recent version of jCVS is 5.1.1.
I dont get it to work out of the box. Since I have the problems with
the
CLI version I'm not sure if its an underlying problem, or a problem
with the jCVS distribution.

I'm looking forward for any help on this, as I'm quite anxious to get
CVS up and runnig.

Regards

Dag,

I don't have any absolute solutions. I have been using it for quite a while
now without problem.

I downloaded my original version of CVS from the main download site, I don't
know if the hobbes version is exactly the same, you might want to check
that.

Both my OS/2 cvs and my Linux cvs have been built from source. If you have
built your Linux cvs from source I would suggest you run the test suite that
comes with it. You should get no errors when it runs. Does "cvs" in
dag@cvs really resolve to your Linux box? No domain name?

Last, but not least, you might consider building the OS/2 cvs from source
with debug info simply so you can trace it. It's a pretty simple project to
rebuild.

Good luck,
Kelly

I forgot to mention that I tried jcvs when I did my initial installation but
didn't have any luck with it. It looks good "in concept", it's a proper
application of Java. Just like so many programs though, I think once you've
acquired the skill from the command line you find the GUI is a hinderance as
much as an asset. I feel no need to be part of jcvs debugging.

Speaking of GUI vs command line, I found VI preferable to EPM for the cvs
editor. EPM is a little too porky for the simple task of commenting updates.
VI integrates more naturally with the cvs update process.

cvs is the entry I made in the hosts file on both the linux and os2 box.

Were you able to rebuild the source? We tried it because we had some problems
at Netlabs but we were not able to compile the source (well, we did not try
it for a long time because we found the bug in EMX).

BTW: EMX has some bugs in it if you run it on Aurora and that's the reason
why we had problems with it.

Try rebooting to a command-line (Alt-F1, F2 during boot) and delete the
file that way. Then reboot again and try to reinstall.

You could also copy the CD to the hard drive, and apply the fixpack
directly to the installation files. Then when you install VAC 3.0, you'll
install a version that has FP8 already applied.

Any ideas

You also need to run CHKDSK C: /F:2

Sounds like you have a corrupted hard drive. I don't know off the top of
my head if there are any surface analysis tools for OS/2 like there are
for DOS.  After running chkdsk I would recommend a full standalone backup;
low level format & repartition of the drive; restore standalone backup.
This will shake out the "marginal" sectors on the drive.

Is your CD-ROM an IDE drive. There was a significant problem with some of
the early 32+x CD-ROM drives. Try disabling bus mastering. Also look for
an updated device driver. I remember one CD-ROM I had which had spastic
read problems under OS/2. The problem was drive spin up/down took longer
than the driver allowed. I ended up putting the CD-ROM in a machine which
doesn't run OS/2.

This is a known problem.
Here is a workaround:
Edit your config.sys. Change the LOCALE statement (after saving the
original CONFIG.SYS) so that it contains no reference to the locale
directory of the VAC product.
Reboot the system
Apply fixpack 8
Restore the original CONFIG.SYS
Reboot the system

I remember that I had to make little changes somewhere (was it in
cppupd.cmd??) for many of the fixpacks already: There seems to be an
error in the installation procedure for a long time already that is not
being fixed! I assume this only occurs on non-american computers where
you are using an US-english VAC++ version, so they do not encounter it
in America!

But sorry: I do not recall what exactly I did change, but it was somehow
straightforward. Look at the error message and take it serious exactly
as it is, i.e. if it says "the unpack command was wrong" then this is
the guilty and has to be corrected!

I hope this helps at least a bit, even if it's not much more than
saying: It's not your fault, but you have to fiddle around a bit before
these fixpacks install!

Running CHKDSK cannot do any harm, like checking for any other hardware
problems (like CD-ROM) of course, but before you take such drastic
measures read my other posting!

I'm 99% sure this is _not_ a hardware problem! There is a bug in the
VAC-Fixpack installation when applied on a non-american (at least:
german) sytem which has to be corrected manually each time you want to
apply such a fixpack!

This looks like an easiser solution than mine: I'll keep it until
Fixpack 9 comes out (if ever...)
