Subj: Acer CRW6206A Adaptec DirectCD

From: Britt <brittonm@sympatico.ca>

To one and all,

I have installed an Acer CDRW 6206A and it works fine as a CD reader,
simple enough install
under OS2. I use SCSI HDD and CDROM, and want ot use the Writer to
create backups etc.

The Adaptec DirectCD software works fine under Windoze 95, aside from
the usual problems,
but I have no wish to reboot into Windoze when I use the writer. Adaptec
do not support OS2,
so I do not support Adaptec, I use Symbios hardware which is superbly
made, supported and priced. (sorry for the ad, but if its good product
it has earned the mention)

1) I am playing with Odin to see if I can get the software to function
under WinOS2, has anyone
had experience with this

2) has anyone tried using another approach to the problem, ie other
software/drivers under WinOS2 or native OS2

Look forward to comments/suggestions

Britt

Progress Report

Configuration

OS2 4.0 & FP12
64M Ram
SCSI HDD 1 C E
SCSI HDD 2 D F G
SCSI CDROM H

ACER attached to EIDE CNTRLR 0 as MASTER, PIO 4 (have tried PIO 0)
BusMastering OFF
AMI BIOS

1) vanilla OS2 install mounts the ACER as I:, and reads fine, (OS2 install
completed from this
    drive)

2) Installed RSJ with no parameter changes, and experienced TRAP error on
boot.

3) downloaded danis506 driver, and installed. BTW excellent docs/program
    System booted fine.
    danis506 reported evrything optimum.
RSJ reported ACER as WORM, when -i"ATAPI" added to lockcdr.flt. If this is
not added then
the ACER is identified but ignored.
    Boot completed succesfully
OS2 does not list drive (as to be expected)
CD Writer control reports "Cannot find device specified"

I am now at a loss as to how to proceed. There are not error messages, and
everything appears
to be in order.

Suggestions would be welcome

Regards
Britt

Isn't this CDRW and IDE/ATAPI interface? I believe until recently, it
was not possible to write with an IDE CDRW, but that RSJ now supports
ATAPI (but is $$$$).

Yes this is ATAPI, and RSJ supports. I am in the process of setting it up.
On boot RSJ identidies my SCSI CD Reader, and The Acer IDE, but flags them as
"Ignored"
I think the acer is not in the supported drive list, so I am attempting to
resolve this.

Will add results later

Seth,

The easiest way to go is to use Powerquests Drive Copy. No detailed
instructions or warnings are necessary, except that when expanding the
partitions you have to stay within the operating systems limits. E.g. a
FAT partition can't be bigger than 2.1GB.

Try the support page (faq, tech forum, etc.) at RSJ's web site. I
haven't used it, but I'm gearing up to check out the 30 day emo, so I
read through the support pages. They may address your problem and
explain why the device ID problems occur. Also, there is a link to a
review, where the reviewer recalls his installation woes and resolution
(his was a SCSI).

Good luck
