From: beaver@3-cities.com@  (Tom Beaver)

I have a problem trying to play .mp3 files under WARP 3.0 FP40. I installed
both
PM123 and WarpAMP but whenever I try to play an .mp3 file with either program
I
get "MCI Error 5134 No device driver found". I have a NewClear sound card
with
Crystal 4237B chipset. Both programs find the Crystal Audio device driver and

I can play .wav and .mid files without any problems.
Any suggestions as to what is wrong would be appreciated.

I bought one that looks like a reference design, and came with generic
Aureal drivers only for Windows,
but the OS/2 drivers did not work except for initialising the card (so I
guess the driver loaded). I could not adjust volume, play wave files or
Midi. :-(

This was a Genius SoundMaker 64.

Yes I used the uninstall feature to supposedly remove my old SB16
drivers.
They didn't show up in the list anymore but it left the drivers in
config.sys
(sb16d2.sys and audiovdd.sys)

Sigh. Another $30 down the drain... what fun. (Oh BTW it is a quite
competent Windows 3d sound card)

Interesting info on those links...however, I can't speak to
how this card benchmarks out on Windows 98, as these pages
do in great detail.

I can say that it has worked very, very well on different
installations of Warp 4 and Warp 3, up to and including
FP's 12 and 40.

Interestingly enough, ESS cards have always worked well in
OS/2 for me (the 1869 and the Solo 1). *Much* better than
any of the Creative, Crystal, Yamaha or Opti cards I have
tried and eventually removed from my systems.

There are two really ugly problems with the Aureal drivers
and the Yamaha drivers outside of the fact they don't
work with WINOS2

1) they require exclusive use the IRQ assigned to the
sound card.

2) The Aureal drivers will only work if the card is plugged
into PCI bus 0 of the machine. Some machines have
PCI bus 0, PCI bus 1 (usually the AGP slot) and PCI
bus 2.

If they don't appear in the "Hardware Manager" list they
did not load.

The Warp mixer shipped with the Aureal cards with work
with the Yamaha card. You can use this to set the volume
on the mixer input lines, that may be the problem with
the playing of MIDI?

The web site for the Hauppauge Wincast/TV PCI cards is
back on-line.

You can access it at it's old Web Page address but there
is a new address for the site.

The site is under construction but the download link
points to an updated set of drivers. These are version
1.041X. I installed them, and they seem to work the same
as the previous version 1.041W (at least on my system)

Subj: Yeehar! - Aureal sound all go

From: Aaron Lawrence <aaronl@clear.net.nz>

Thanks to Lorne Sunley and also David Johnson. I had to do all those steps to
make it work

1) Fiddle with PCI settings to make sure the card wasn't sharing an IRQ with
anything else (I guess the hardware supports it, but the OS/2 driver doesn't -
pity, this negates some of the point of PCI)

After this and before step 2 it would just lock up when I tried to open the
mixer.

2) Delete and reinstall MMOS2. (I got confused about where the reinstall was -
3rd page of the Warp 4 selective install, cunningly well seperated from the
Multimedia device setting, which has no 'have disk' setting - once again I am
struck at the weirdness of IBM user interfaces).

Now I have mixer, wave and midi sound (and the midi sounds quite good to me).
Life is good. Now if only I could fix my mouse problems...

BTW. Even before doing all this. Everything appeared to have loaded correctly.
The hardware manager showed the 2 Aureal drivers. The background program
aurdmn
was loaded. The drivers loaded without an error. Mucho confuso!

Anyway, I wonder if this needs writing up somewhere... seeing as so many
people
are asking.

Thanks all, great work

Aaron

How does one control the level of wav (or other) sound output from

Levels do not seem to bear any relationship to the sound setting from

The card in particular is a crystal 4280 PCI.

Subj: How to play MP3 through Netscape?

From: rcpj@panix.com (Pierre Jelenc)

I simply cannot get Netscape (4.61) to play mp3 files. I have installed
PM123, which works perfectly well on its own, and have tried to associate
it with M3U and MP3 extensions in the Preferences/Applications section
with the respective MIME types audio/x-mpegurl and audio/mpeg. The path to
the EXE file is correct, and I have tried it with and without quotes. When
I click on an M3U link I get a text window with the URL to the MP3 file;
when I click on an MP3 link I get the usual file download dialog.

What is missing here? Why can't PM123 be launched as it should be?

One peculiar thing is that the description that I enter originally does
not stick, it gets replaced automatically by "PM123 file" in both cases
when I save the preferences.

I don't know, all the programming I have done to use
the drivers in the replacement Media Control Device
and the Vendor Specific Driver (MCD/VSD) uses
the DosDevIOCtl interface for the Physical Device Driver
(PDD).

The toolkit routines provide an alternate access
API to the lower level DosDevIOCtl calls. The VCAI
library routines must work as the notebook settings and
the utility routines and the WTV application all
use them.

AFAIK Stefan Milcke's StWTV application uses
the VCAI lib routines as well.

What kind of problems are you having with
the toolkit? I might be able to help out.

 You need to use an intermediate step to get MP3 files into PM123,
which is done by creating a tiny little batch file that feeds the URL
into PM123's pipe.

 PM123 has this "remote control" feature that lets you send it new
URLs and files to play through a simple command line. If you create a
tiny CMD file, call it "mp3url.cmd" and put this as its contents:

----- Snip here -----

type %1 > \PIPE\PM123

----- Snip here ------

You'll be able to feed .m3u files to PM123 from the command line. If
you associate all .m3u files in Netscape to this CMD file, clicking on
a link in Netscape will make it:

 1) Download the m3u file (an m3u file is a tiny text file with the
URL of the MP3 to play)

 2) Run mp3url.cmd, which will feed that MP3 URL to PM123 and start it
playing.

 You'd associate this with Netscape by going into the "Applications"
subcategory of Netscape's preferences and using these settings:

 Description: "MP3 URL"
 File extension: .m3u
 MIME Type: audio/x-mpegurl
 Command to run: c:\wherever\you\put\it\mp3url.cmd

 You might want to go back and EDIT this association later and uncheck
the "Ask me before opening" box to stop Netscape from throwing up a
dialog box every time. Unfortunately, whenever you click on an m3u
link you'll still see a CMD window flash briefly on your screen as the
CMD is run. I don't know how to remove this part yet, since Netscape
has no "Run this program minimized" feature yet.

 It also means that you need to have PM123 running before you click on
any MP3 links. This isn't so bad though, you can just put it in your
startup folder or have a handy shortcut to it somewhere.

 I've tested this method with MP3.COM and noticed a problem. MP3.COM
has recently tried to be "helpful" by redirecting you to a page that
encourages you to associate the RealPlayer G2 you can't run under OS/2
with the MP3 MIME types. Since PM123 is the one doing the requesting
and not Netscape, it may start feeding you a stream of error dialogs
saying it "can't find the filename <HTML><HEAD><TITLE>You haven't got
RealPlayer G2 you lame idiot</TITLE></HEAD><BODY>" or something.
 This problem went away when I signed into the "MyMP3.Com" part of the
web site. I don't know if other MP3 sites have this problem.

Chris Wenham - editor@os2ezine.com

Lorne,

Thanks for your reply.

No problems really. I was looking thru the toolkit and there seemed to
be interesting stuff in there .... picture in picture, etc. But it all
looked like it was all for the Celebrity card. For a long time, the
stuff on Abbottsbury was fine for the HighQ and Celebrity cards, but
CR*P for the WinCast/TV. That has changed now due to Rodriguez. I was
going to play around with it if it was actually useable for the WinCast
card.

Just wondering, does the wincast card require that my existing video card be
removed?

also, do you know anything about Matrox's addons for the Matrox G200?

apparently, I found out that the plextor 6plex is pretty much obsolete as it
can't read most of the new cd's.

It can't even read the netscape 4.61 128bit CD that I ordered from IBM
website.

:(

anyways, can anyone recommend a CD-rom? should I get one that writes to a CD?

what about DVD? I'm aware that there is no drivers for dvd drives yet.

If I did use dvd, it'd probably be used under windoze 98 or NT.

If I do get DVD, should I get one that reads CDs also?

Subj: Aureal OS/2 drivers for AR8820 works... except - no MCI device support?

From: "Billy Ko" <billko@postoffice.worldnet.att.net>

All of my MCI devices don't work, which means CD players, and anything that
uses MCI calls, like PMMail and GalCiv.

I haven't heard any complaints about this before, so I assume something went
wrong with my install.

Here's what I did:

Uninstalled/re-installed MMPM, installed Aureal drivers - no MCI support
Re-installed FP12 (Only updated MMPM files, as expected) - still no go
Re-installed Aureal drivers - still no MCI support

Anyone else have this problem?

That's the problem: the 1.041X version works th same as the 1.041W
version. IOW, I still have to play with the s2_amux value to get any
sound.

Did you manage to get any sound support for Win-OS/2 and the DOS-box?
Aureal has Win 3.1 drivers. I have downloaded them and they contain a
program called asp4dos.com that is called in AUTOEXEC.BAT to initialize
the card. Have you tried this?

Hi all!

Has anyone been successful in getting sound support for Aureal Vortex 1
based cards under Win-OS/2 and in the DOS-box? I am considering buying
such a card (Terratec XLerate).
Aureal offers Win 3.1 drivers and they contain a program called
ASP4DOS.COM that is called in AUTOEXEC.BAT to initialize the card. Has
anyone tried this?
If all fails shouldn't it be possible to use Soundblaster Pro drivers in
Win-OS/2 to get at least 8-bit sound support?

Actually, that's what mp3.com says they are.

After installing FP12, I found some multimedia problems, most notably
Digital Audio no longer worked and MIDI files would no longer play. I
downleveled back to FP 11 and will await FP13.

After restoring my boot drive (I ran a full system backup before starting
this adventure), I followed his advice:

DON'T re-install MMPM. Do this instead. It keeps all your existing MMPM
settings (you've undoubtedly installed a bunch of MMPM-aware stuff like
codecs since you initially loaded OS/2 on to your drive):

You can edit the MMPM2.INI file and remove the references
to the sound card drivers. After you re-boot you can "usually"
install the new sound card drivers without any problems.
The file lives in \MMOS2

This is my MMPM2.INI file and I have marked the
places that I would chop out to allow installing a
new sound card.

If it doesn't work, you can always remove MMOS2
support, delete the \MMOS2 directory tree and
re-install MMOS2

No, the Wincast/TV card does not replace the regular video
card. The TV card uses the VRAM in the video card for
display of the TV picture.

When the video card uses a GRADD model video driver
the Wincast/TV card can use a GRADD extension driver
for hardware display of the TV picture. This results in hardly
any CPU load when displaying the picture.

The Scitech Display Docter drivers http://www.scitech.com
are a GRADD model driver and support most of the available
PCI and AGP video cards. These drivers are in beta so the
performance with the video cards will vary.

No I don't...

It's on http://hobbes.nmsu.edu

The file name is patchymf.zip

I don't remember the exact URL but the search

I don't know about PM123 but WarpAmp requires DART to work. You can
get it in the Netscape Navigator for OS/2 Plug-in Pack 1.02 at

Ah, I think I understand. The m3u file on the command line does nothing,
of course. It has to be its contents that are fed to the program.

Thanks. Indeed that's the solution. Part of the solution at least: It
worked on one song, but now does not seem to work anymore: The command
line window comes on, stays there for a second or two, then it and PM123
close together.

As an aside, if I can get this fixed, is it possible to feed PM123 a list
of URLs rather than a single one, as is done in a mp3.com radio station?
(e.g. mine at http://stations.mp3s.com/stations/6/take_the_f_train.html )

I'll try again after I reboot, but obviously that's not a solution.

From: rjerant@no_spam,austin.rr.com (Rich Jerant)

My understanding is that Aureal has not released any Win-OS/2 or DOS
support. ASP4DOS.com mostlikly sets up the card to run in Real DOS
mode. This may useful for running DOS games under OS/2. However if the
OS/2 driver does not have some way of knowing that a DOS session has
"taken control" of the hardware you could have some stability
problems. ie system hangs. As for the Win31 driver make sure it is a
"REAL MODE" Win31 driver. (in other words it is NOT a VXD based
driver) The Win-OS/2 kernal will not load vxds and the driver will be
useless with out it. The best advice here is if you MUST have DOS and
Win-OS/2 support , buy a card that that actually has the support.

What the hell do you mean obsolete? CD format is pretty much the same for
years. I've read the same Netscape/2 CD on an old 4x Toshiba and even a 2X
drive works as well. More than likely, there's something busted, the
laser, misalignment, whatever.

CD writers are useful but more expensive. Grab any cheapy CD-ROM cause
you'll need it anyways for CD-CD writing. I'm partial to Aopen/Acer right
now cause they're cheap and as far as I can tell, reliable.
As far as I know DVD's will function as a CD-ROM under OS/2. Even they are
only going for $130CDN around here.

Sounds like a mechanical problem, as the basic CD-ROM data format has

FYI, I was told by a plextor owner that the plextor 6plex cdrom's inability to
read certain cds was a known problem by Plextor. It had something to do with
the laser light wavelengths. They had chip upgrade that didn't work. I
haven't given Plextor a call to comfirm this tho.

I have used scanpci for determining the hardware. The program shows ESS
Technology (device unknown in the program's database) deviceID 0x1978,
revision ID 0x10. It identifies the device as a multimedia device, audio
using IRQ line 11 and PCI INT pin A at 0x0000fc00 IO port.

The driver's installation inserted a line in config.sys :
DEVICE = x:\MMOS2\MAESTR2E.SYS N:MASTRO1$
with x: the drive letter where OS/2 is installed.

The release.txt file, included in the zip archive, says that she has just

Yes. I have a Toshiba DVD drive in a multiple boot machine. In order to
use
it under Warp4, I had to download the latest IDE driver package from
IBM.
So far no differences to a normal CD-ROM drive.

Anyway, is anybody working/or has already done something to support
DVD under OS/2 ? On other platforms (Linux, W******s) there are
additional
IOCTL for a player to obtain keys or authenticate to the drive or disc.
Furthermore, can anybody clarify, if the UDF file system is really
needed
for DVD access. I mean, when I put a DVD in that drive, I can see the
directory
structure, but cannot copy any files. Is this because I'm not autorised
to do so
(copyright stuff) or because OS/2 does not support the file system ?

The docs say that it's a binary edited ESS1968 driver with the '6' turned

into a '7'.

Jos reported the volume to be very low. The need to turn on the
external amp would explain this ...

It's not working on my system, that's why I started this thread.
The driver loades, but I cannot play any wav-sound. When I
load a way into the audio editor and start playback, the red line,
which usually indicates the progress, does not move.
My system is a Gateway Solo 9300 notebook.

From: prather@exis.net (Jerry Prather)

Okay!!!! This critter works.

Over the weekend I installed the subject card. It is a PCI card.
 I did uninstall and reinstall MMOS2 before doing the driver
thing as suggested in the Crystal ReadMe. OS/2 sound and WinOS2
installed and works without a problem. Pretty impressive for a
card that costs ~$30.

I'm still fighting with RealAudio, though. I've got the correct
parameters set in Netscape 4.61, but it seems like something is
still not working/set up correctly. The RealAudio control panel
pops up, but nothing happens from there. I've got to go back and
review a bunch of saved mail and new notes on the subject. Can
someone point me to a site which is known not to use the G2
stuff?

Thanks,

Jerry Prather                    prather@infi.net

What kind of sound do you have in Win-OS/2? Waveaudio and
Wavetable/General MIDI? Or only wave and OPL2? Have you already tried
the DOS-box with some DOS game that needs Soundblaster emulation?

To tell the truth, I don't know. I know that when I open a
WinOS2 program (I only have one - TurboTax) I get sound where I
didn't before. I own a grand total of zero games, so that's
never been an issue for me. (The box does say "CrystalClear
support DOS legacy" and "Sound Blaster Pro compatible".)
RealAudio was my prime intent, and that is still waiting on a
good solution (which may never come).

I also don't have a mixer, but I understand that there is one
that works well called LBMixer. It's mentioned in an excellent
article in the Voice Newsletter of 12/1999:

http://www.os2voice.org/VNL/past_issues/VNL1299H/vnewsf4.htm.

This covers the installation procedures as well.

After rebooting, it is no better. The vio window flashes by, then it and
the PM123 program close without a sound.

Changing tack, I tried MP123, which comes with a ready-made batch file to
run m3u URLs. It works fine from the command line, but again closes
instantly if launched from Netscape.

Z! is also supposed to work, but the package I found has no manual. It
appears to be able to play multiple URLs but not if they are separated by
<CR><LF> as in an m3u file.

Should the 16-bit Shockwave plug-in work in NS2 for OS/2 exactly the
same as it does in NS3 for Win 3.1? If you go to this site, for
example:

NS3 displays the Shockwave file, but NS for OS/2 ignores it. Has anyone
have an explanation for this?

It's the ISO 9660 file system that does not support extended
attributes. The only way to get them on a CD is to use
either an EA aware zip utility and burn the CD with the
zip files, or to use EAUTIL to separate the files and
the EA's, burn the CD, and use EAUTIL to rejoin the
EA's and the data files from the CD after copying them
to an EA aware file system like HPFS.

Indeed, thanks. Your script makes the difference.

What should the buffer size be for a 56k connection? With the default 32
I get a lot of hiccups as soon as there's the least bit of line
congestion.

First off, you can't do that on a blank CDR or CDRW. :')

>Command is:
>cdrecord.exe dev=0,0 -toc -v

What you're trying to do here is read the TableOfContents on a BLANK CD???
Sorry, but it won't work that way... Also, are you sure that your cdr drive is
on scsi ID number 0? That's what you are specifing in the above command...

Here's a short list to help you along...

Assuming your CDR drive is on scsi ID4...

To blank a CDRW:
cdrecord dev=0,4,0 -multi -v -blank=fast

To write a multi-session CDR[W]:
cdrecord dev=0,4,0 -v -speed=4 -multi cd.raw

To write an entire CDR[W] at once:
cdrecord dev=0,4,0 -v -speed=4 cd.raw
cdrecord dev=0,4,0 -v -speed=4 -fix

To create a raw cd image:
mkisofs -a -d -J -l -L -N -v -o cd.raw -m "WP?ROOT.?SF" -m "WP?SHARE.?SF"
/=c:/stuff /backup/=c:/mybackup ...etc...

Hope some of this helps.
Oh yeah -- if you're using one of the later fixpaks, then add the "/W" to
the line IFS=C:\BOOT\CDFS.IFS /W -- this will allow you to use long
filenames (Joliet) on the CDR.

>Have you loaded ASPIROUT.SYS? OS2ASPI.DMD? The driver for
>your SCSI card?
>->device=D:\UTILITIES\MUSIC\CDRECORD\aspirout.sys
>->BASEDEV=OS2ASPI.DMD /ALL (for my microtec scanner)
>->BASEDEV=OS2SCSI.DMD
>->BASEDEV=AHA152X.ADD (for my Adaptec aha1522b scsi adapter)

A quickie test for cdrecord is cdrecord dev=X,0 -inq which gives
the program's opinion of your drive, where X is the SCSI ID of
the CDR drive. If this works, you _should_ be able to do
anything. If it doesn't, you still have a configuration problem
somewhere.

The MOST important tip I can give you is... print out the read.me's and study
them.

So, my question is. What do we agree is the best procedure for

I guess the issues about PCI setup are clear enough.

AU8820 OS/2 Driver 					     README.TXT
=======================================================================

This is the Vortex AU8820 OS/2 driver version 1.00. This driver has
very limited feature support and will only run in native OS/2. There
are no plans to support Win OS/2.

       E.  Compatibility List

=======================================================================
I.  Overview
=======================================================================

A. OS/2 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
====================================

   * 100mhz Pentium-compatible CPU
   * 16MB DRAM (the Vortex hardware wavetable engine uses a native
     4MB sample set. Samples are stored on disk and swapped to RAM
     as required. Typical DRAM footprint is <2MB.
   * 15MB hard disk space
   * CD-ROM drive
   * Good-quality speakers or headphones and connecting cables.
   * Joystick and MIDI keyboard (optional).

B.  Known Limitations
=====================

  1. Clock01.sys & Clock02.sys in Warp 4 without any fixpacks applied
  interfere with wavetable MIDI playback.
	Workaround: Install new fixpacks

  2. MMPM/2 MIDI player can't use the MPU for midi playback (it always
  defaults to WT). Does not happen in Warp 3 and play.cmd works fine.
  This appears to be a bug in the MPPM midi player. The same thing
  happens with other audio devices.

  3. Unable to uninstall with minstall in Warp 3. This also happens
  with other audio devices.

  4. End of (windows) AVI's intermittently hangs -> AnPoCodec problem
  this happens with other audio devices.

  5. Master volume applet in Multimedia folder only works when a
  multimedia stream exists. Otherwise master volume commands are
  ignored.

  6. WarpMix gets out of sync when other applications change the
  volume/gain/mute and recording source selections while it's running.

  7. To use the 2nd midi device in the Midi player, choose Midi
  devices -> MIDI 2 in the View menu.

  8. The driver (not the card) requires that the card must NOT be
  sharing an interrupt with another PCI card; you may need to move
  the card to a different PCI slot and use your BIOS to make sure
  that the Vortex card has an interrupt to itself.

  9. The driver requires that the card be on PCI Bus 0
  (Some machines have PCI bus 0, PCI bus 1 (usually the AGP slot)
  and PCI bus 2.)

=======================================================================
II. Software Installation
=======================================================================

A. DRIVER INSTALLATION
======================

The main issue is to remove any existing drivers. If your system has
not had a soundcard installed (under OS/2) before, you can ignore the
uninstall steps.

  1. Uninstall OS/2 Multimedia using 'Selective Uninstall'
     (\os2\install\uninstal.exe) * see note
  2. Uninstall Aureal drivers if present
     (Delete startup.cmd or remove asp4init.exe)
  3. Reboot
  4. Delete the \mmos2 directory
  5. Reinstall OS/2 Multimedia using 'Selective Install'
     (\os2\install\install.exe)
     - make sure NO multimedia device is selected on the first page
     - check 'Multimedia' on the 3rd page
     - you will need your OS/2 CD for this.
  6. Unzip the driver files into a temporary directory
  7. Run 'Multimedia Application Install' (\os2\install\minstall.exe)
     from the temp directory
  8. Install the drivers that show up in the window
     (Aureal, Wavetable, and MPU 401)
  9. Reboot.
     You should see two drivers load.

* Note:
If you have installed other multimedia features in OS/2, these will
be lost. To avoid this, you can manually remove just the drivers:
Edit the \mmos2\mmpm.ini file, and remove the following settings
from the [Drivers] section:
    Waveaudio=aaa
    Sequencer=bbb
    Ampmix=ccc
Also remove the sections aaa, bbb, ccc, and any that are clearly
related to them.
If this does not work you will have to remove and reinstall
Multimedia as described above.

B.  UNINSTALLING THE DRIVERS
============================

1. Run uninstal.cmd from the original distribution directory
   (which removes AurDmn from the startup folder and starts minstall)
2. Select all drivers in the minstall window
3. When asked, select Aureal Vortex cards and press OK
4. After minstall finishes, reboot.

you may be able to get help on the newsgroup comp.os.os2.multimedia

Subj: CDRecord and thumbnails

From: "Adrian Gschwend" <nospam_ktk@netlabs.org>

I scanned a lot of pictures and I would like to archive them on disk. I used
PMView to generate thumbnails of the pictures and I can see them if I open
the folder. If I burn them with CDRecord and MKISoft the thumbnails are gone.
I think this has something to do with Extendet Attributes but I don't know
how to force MKISoft to burn them too.

Can someone tell me how to do it?

thanks

Adrian

Z doesn't have a built in buffer yet. Dink may add it. Send him
email. I have another version of the script that writes the whole
file to disk first before playing it.

56k connections just don't work well with mp3 unless it is a low
density mp3 file.

Excuse me for breaking in, but can anyone tell the names of the boards
that use Crystal Semiconductors-, Yamaha-, Aureal-chipset. I am an
ordinary user that need to know this when I enter the shop. Even the
ordianry salesman does not knowhich chipset the cards he sells have.

Therefore all experts please use the boardnames also!

10. Warp Server for e-Business requires FP 1 for the driver
to work. The GA release of WSeB will trap on loading the
driver or when the ASP4INIT.EXE program is run.

The "thumbnails" are stored in the files Extended Attributes.

The ISO 9660 file system does not support Extended Attributes

I don't think there is any way of doing this.

The thumbnails are stored in the extended attributes, yes. This means that
they can only exist (as such) on a filesystem which supports EAs - which does
not, unfortunately, include ISO9660 or any of its extensions.

What you _can_ do:

 - Use one of the available utilities for extracting the thumbnails from
   the EAs as separate icon files; then burn those to the CD as well.
   I don't know how well (if at all) this is capable of preserving the
   image/thumbnail association.

 - ZIP the images and burn the ZIP file onto CD. EAs can exist inside
   ZIP files, so when you unzip them again (onto a hard drive) the
   thumbnails will still be there.

 - Find (or invent) an image format that is capable of storing thumbnails
   _inside_ the image file, and that your image programs are capable of
   supporting.  This one's a longshot...

I'd recommend editing the INI file, if another soundcard has been
installed before. Deleting MMOS2, re-installing it, re-applying the FP,
re-installing all CODECs and Netscape's plug-ins is a bunch of work
compared to deleting some entries in MMPM2.INI. I've done the card
replacement with manually editing the INI file twice (Creative ->
Crystal drivers and - for testing - Crystal -> Aureal) and had no
problems ever apart from getting to know which entries to delete and
which not.
They could add a hint about de-installing Crystal drivers, because you
just have to install them again and select zero when asked about the
number of devices.

A hint about re-applying the fixpaks is missing. I'd also add some
examples for "other multimedia features" like TV card drivers, video
codecs and Netscape MM plug-ins.

You're right. The thumbnails are saved in the extended attribute of the
file. But the file system on the CD does not know anything about EA's.
So you won't be able to store the thumbnails on the CD...

This may help you if you want to continue using the AU8820 with WinOS/2
support. For the last three months I have been working on a Generic
WinOS/2 audio support driver that will provide WinOS/2 support for sound
independent of the sound card actually installed (as long as it has
OS/2 drivers). There will be a website available shortly explaining this
driver and where it may be obtained from - so watch c.o.o.announce for
an announcement in the very near future. Currently the driver is in a
closed beta, but it is stable and supports wave-in and wave-out very
well,
well enough in fact to run an interactive Windows 3.1 language course I
use that makes use of speech recognition and QuickTime libraries with
a more than adequate level of performance. Midi-out support will be
added later

The code is originally based upon the 'Generic WinOS/2 Audio driver'
that
is available from the IBM DDK and which supported wave out only. The new
driver has been completely re-engineered with a more efficient data
transport path and a better implementation. Most of the useful WinOS/2
apps (including RealPlayer 5, MS Video for Win, and applications that
make use of the Quicktime libraries) all run. I hope to have a release
ready very early in Jan 2000.

If you want more information, please send me some email and I will try
to help.

	John.

Now, anybody wanting to develop a VDD for the DOS-box?

A bit outdated as far as PCI cards are concerned. Please note that even
Crystal Semiconductor does NOT fully support the DOS-box (no
Soundblaster emulation, only OPL2 MIDI) and Win-OS/2 (only OPL2 MIDI) w/
PCI-cards (yet)! However see another posting in this thread for a _new_
virtual Win-OS/2 driver!

I've listed some cards also w/ other chips:

Terratec (http://www.terratec.net):
- XLerate (NOT XLerate Pro!) w/ Aureal Vortex 1 chip, hard- & software
wavetable, A3D sound in Windows
- 128 i PCI w/ ESS Solo-1 chip

AOpen (http://www.aopen.com.tw):
- AW320 PCI card w/ Crystal 4614 chip, hardware wavetable, supports A3D
under Windows
- AW230 PCI card w/ Crystal 4280 chip, software wavetable (OS/2
support?)
- AW37 (Pro) ISA card, w/ Crystal 4235 chip, Pro version w/ hardware
wavetable, very good Win-OS/2 and DOS-box support, no A3D compatibility
- AW724 and AW744 w/ Yamaha chips, should work w/ drivers modified by
Daniela Engert.

Hi!

Does anybody know if OS/2 drivers for the ESS Canyon 3D chip are
available? I can't find any information about any drivers for this chip
and there seems to be no support e-mail address at ESS web site.

OK thanks all, I incorporated all that and tidied up a bit (noticed the
table of contents was wrong), changed the install to suggest manually
removing the drivers as Christian suggested. Here's the final I
sent to Aureal:

=======================================================================
AU8820 OS/2 Driver 					     README.TXT
=======================================================================

This is the Vortex AU8820 OS/2 driver version 1.00. This driver has
very limited feature support and will only run in native OS/2. There
are no plans to support Win OS/2.

=======================================================================
I.  Overview
=======================================================================

A. OS/2 System Requirements
===========================

   * 100mhz Pentium-compatible CPU
   * 16MB DRAM (the Vortex hardware wavetable engine uses a native
     4MB sample set. Samples are stored on disk and swapped to RAM
     as required. Typical DRAM footprint is <2MB.
   * 15MB hard disk space
   * CD-ROM drive
   * Good-quality speakers or headphones and connecting cables.
   * Joystick and MIDI keyboard (optional).

B.  Known Limitations
=====================

  This appears to be a bug in the MMPM midi player.

  10. Warp Server for e-Business requires Fixpack 1 for the driver
  to work. The GA release of WSeB will trap on loading the driver
  or when the ASP4INIT.EXE program is run.

=======================================================================
II. Software Installation
=======================================================================

The main issue is to remove any existing drivers. If your system has
not had a soundcard installed (under OS/2) before, you can ignore the
uninstall steps.

A. Uninstall of Previous Drivers
================================

Edit the \mmos2\mmpm.ini file, and remove the following settings
from the [Drivers] section:
    Waveaudio=aaa
    Sequencer=bbb
    Ampmix=ccc
Also remove the sections aaa, bbb, ccc, and any that are clearly
related to them.

If the current drivers are for Aureal then you should also
delete startup.cmd or remove asp4init.exe.

If this does not work you will have to remove and reinstall
OS/2 Multimedia (see below). Doing so will lose any other
multimedia features that may have been installed (for example,
TV card drivers, video codecs and Netscape MM plug-ins).

B. OS/2 Multimedia Reinstall
============================

Do this if the driver removal described above does not work, or if
you want to make sure of a 'clean' install.

  1. Uninstall OS/2 Multimedia using 'Selective Uninstall'
     (\os2\install\uninstal.exe)
  2. Reboot
  3. Delete the \mmos2 directory
  4. Reinstall OS/2 Multimedia using 'Selective Install'
     (\os2\install\install.exe)
     - make sure NO multimedia device is selected on the first page
     - check 'Multimedia' on the 3rd page
     - you will need your OS/2 CD for this.
  5. Reapply the fixpack your system is using. This will reapply
     any required multimedia fixes.

C. Aureal Driver Installation
=============================

  1. Unzip the driver files into a temporary directory
  2. Run 'Multimedia Application Install' (\os2\install\minstall.exe)
     from the temp directory
  3. Install the drivers that show up in the window
     (Aureal, Wavetable, and MPU 401)
  4. Reboot.
     You should see two drivers load.

=======================================================================
II. Software Uninstall
=======================================================================

  1. Run uninstal.cmd from the original distribution directory
     (which removes AurDmn from the startup folder and starts minstall)
  2. Select all drivers in the minstall window
  3. When asked, select Aureal Vortex cards and press OK
  4. After minstall finishes, reboot.

=======================================================================
IV. Getting Help
=======================================================================

For Technical Support please contact your board manufacturer, or
you may be able to get help on the newsgroup comp.os.os2.multimedia

I've got the AW230 and it does support OS/2 very well. Sound
also works under WINOS2, although I don't have much use for it.

I tried them, but when I launch a DOS or Win-OS/2 box, I get this nasty
sawtooth wave sound out of my sound card (wich goes away when Ilaunch the
mixer). Unfortunately, that's all it does.
