I should have mentioned that for Warp 3 FP 35 or greater
is required. You should be OK with 40. DANIS506.ADD
works fine AFAIK.

FDISK finds it and treats it as a hard drive. That's why
you can partition it. IIRC when you first use a cartridge
irt will appear to have some kind of partition. Use
FDISK to delete what's there and then allocate the
partition. You can have more than one partition on
the cartridge if you want. There is some obscure
command line parameters for the driver that allow
you to reserve drive letters for multi-partition cartridges
but I can't remember what they are....

.., thus proving conclusively that Innoval was in business to pay the
grocery bills, rather than to promote OS/2. For the record, I use OS/2
exclusively, but you really can't demand that a company put its resources
into projects that don't pay back.

Happily, Innoval's Java-based mail client, "J Street Mailer", is now being
developed and supported by users, and is now called "Polarbar". It is, as a
consequence, much improved over its condition when it was still an Innoval
product, although it is still in its Beta phase. Things, you see, do
sometimes work out for the best.

Thanks Bill. InnoVal actually engineered the low-cost
deal for OS/2 users in partnership with AFST (Advanced
Family Safe Technologies, Inc) and it is a great deal for
OS/2 users.

Get in now and it is only $12 a month for an entire year
with 56k connections, 100% dialup access either locally
or through an 800 number (and that includes Hawaii, Alaska
and Puerto Rico), 24 hours a day, 7 days a week access.
Go to any other vendor and ask for a discount because
you use OS/2 and they ignore you. Sign up with them
and any OS/2 support you need is usually a joke of the
biggest kind.

InnoVal and AFST are doing this because they believe
OS/2 users are a better equipped and a more knowledgeable
group of Internet users. We all know the most significant
costs for a nationwide ISP are marketing and technical
support. OS/2 users are an active easier-to-reach online
community, we understand quickly, and we readily share
the knowledge with each other through various web sites
newsgroups, and other public forums.

Again, InnoVal is to be applauded for stepping forward
to once again, bring a service or product to the OS/2
community that is being ignored by other OS/2 vendors
or former OS/2 vendors. JSM (now PolarBar) is still - to
this day - the best Java Emailer on the market and it is
being updated with new features and other good things
by the Paul vanKeep group of Java programmers. Without
InnoVal JSM and PolarBar would be dead in the water.

OS/2 users need to support OS/2 users, vendors and
other commercial enterprises that cater to OS/2. For
an OS/2 user to step forward in the public realm and
whine their heads off at such entrepreneurial leadership
is ridiculous. More importantly, it is the best way to kill
off other OS/2 incentives.

Take advantage of the offer extended by and for OS/2
users by Innoval and AFST by signing up as a preferred
OS/2 user with their new ISP for OS/2 users.

Leaving loyal users out in the cold? Lessee - did they withdraw
PostRoad Mailer from you the way the developer of CUSeeme/2
did? Did they lie to you to get you to buy their product then run
off into the night the way SPG did?

No InnoVal did not. To this day they provide free distribution of
the Post Road Mailer (try that with CUSeeMe/2) and have encouraged
others to continue development of the J Street Mailer. Which is exactly
what is happening. Paul vanKeep and his band of merry OS/2 Java
developers have continued development of the former JSM (now
PolarBar) Java emailer and will continue to do so. Had InnoVal
pulled that product and forbid anyone from touching it there would
be no PolarBar or further development today.

InnoVal is to be applauded for their continued devotion to
OS/2, the OS/2 user and the OS/2 community at large.

You want to kill off OS/2? Take a look at what you are
personally doing to help do that today.

I would disagree with this point of view.
I mean first, when they decided to go Java, they let Post Road Mailer out
for free. For everyone. That was nice.

And then when they found that they couldn't pay their bills, they gave
PLENTY of advanced warning that they would have to do some sort of major
switch of business focus.
JStreet mailer was nice, but since they didn't seem to plan on going on
with it, it has been left to someone else to maintain, unofficially, and
as far as I know it is available to everyone for FREE.

That's about as classy an exit as you can get. You mean, you
would actually want a quiet exit? Leave you hanging with no
notice? (TrueSpectra was also very nice about it, but I wish they'd given
more warning). I surely hope you are not comparing Innoval's exit with,
say SPG, or CUSeeMe/2 or maybe even DeScribe!

It's too bad about Innoval. I wish them luck, and if our paths should ever
cross in the future, I'll remember the nice things they did.

I can get to the command prompt and checked for PMPGI.DLL in OS2\DLL\ where
it was found. It was a July 1999 file so I suspect it was a new one.

Are you suggesting that I find a previous version?

Subj: Re: Trap 000d Really Bad Situation

I thought that the PMGPI.DLL might be missing as a result
of the system trapping with the "locked files process".
The files updated by the fixpack are saved in your
"backup" directory that is specified for the service update
tool. Sometime restoring the files from that "backup" can
eliminate any incompatibilities. This is the same thing
as doing a "roll back" to your previous fix level.

The "updating locked files" process is actually doing the
updates for some of the fixpack files that could not be
done while the system is running with the desktop and
other programs active.

With the fixpack only partly applied you may have a
situation where incompatible versions of the files are
present. The only cure for this is a re-install of the
OS, well, not the only cure but probably the fastest.

The PMSHELL (desktop) load a bunch of DLL's

PMWP
PMMERGE
PMSPL
PMGPI
PMGRE
PMWIN
PMSHAPI
PMCTLS

and a bunch of others. If the files in the \os2\dll
path are not compatible you can end up with a
situation where the desktop won't load. The
desktop INI files (os2.ini and os2sys.ini) might
also be corrupt and are killing the desktop.

That might explain the 4 occurences of the PMMERGW->PNGPI

OK, I'll decide what to do here shortly. Boy I never realized how much I
relied
on a small backroom server until it went down for this long. It's been 24/7
for a couple of years
with only downtime for hdwe swaps & such. This is a PITA.

Tnx again, I'll keep you posted.

Geez, Bob! What's this all about?? They knew their newsreader was a
piece of crap, pretty much beyond saving. There were at the time, and
have been subsequently, a ton of newsreader choices for OS/2 users.
We didn't loose anything when they gave up that market.

I haven't looked at MR2/ICE 2.0 yet, but PostRoad Mailer is still
arguably the best mail reader we have. I paid for it once, long long
ago, and I've gotten two major releases for free. I still use PRM and
am happy with it. I'm pretty sure I got the newsreader for free too.

I'll agree with Dan that his customer support for individual users
wasn't the greatest, but I don't recall having occasion to use it
since 2.0 came out. On the other hand, Dan and Innoval tried to do
good things for OS/2 and several of the results are first class.
NetExtra was a fine product for its time. But ultimately, when fine
products don't pay the bills, you have to do what you have to do.

Innoval doesn't make my OS/2 Hall of Shame. I wish them well, and
would buy their software again should the occasion arise.

I quite agree. But I was just answering the point made. I used it. I
stopped using it when I got no reply to my support requests. It wasn't
good and they were right to drop it. But I NEVER (as this was my
point) received anything to say they were doing it....as I say, it WAS
done quietly. And I paid full price for it. No regrets...I had some
use out of it.

As far as the mailers go....I made the original post because someone
asked why someone else was hostile about Innoval. I put forward a
reason.

I like Post Road Mailer. I bought 2.0. I bought the upgrade to 2.5. I
bought the upgrade to 3.0. I heard about enough early bugs in JSM to
stop me upgrading to that. And problems with Java at the time, to be
fair.

The problem for me wa support. In the early days I got a good response
and even a feature I wanted, in some form. But I reported a bug early
in the life of 2.5 (a violation of SMTP and POP3, both). I never even
got a response. It was never fixed. Not polite. Even an email saying
they hadn't the resources would have been OK. I really appreciate
their problems.

I bought NetExtra too. And the upgrades. All of them. Despite the
silly name of WWWatch (does it have the same connotations in the US?).
I couldn't have supported Innoval more, without a charitable donation!

I think it's a shame the product line died. I have their products on
my website to keep them alive. Amd a workround I did for the protocol
bugs. I only wish they could have given Paul van Keep the source to
JSM, to save him time.

LOL! I certainly don't need *you* for that! I used OS/2 for 3 years

Hardly... Since your memory is faulty, I'll have to remind you that
I've rarely responded positively to any of your posts...

And this is precisely why I say not to do us any "favors". You aren't
here to help OS/2 users, you're just fishing for compliments.

And if this isn't true, then the post to which I am replying would
never had been made.

they are located or send the files to me.

The sys editor and clipboard viewer live in your os2 root directory under
the names:

e.exe for the sys editor and clipos2.exe for the clipboard viewer.

Would you prefer the jerk with the fourty thousand lines of code he'd
rather throw away and he did because its his not yours so fuck you
routine? That is usually what happens when software companies leave
markets.

Innoval, in contrast, was exemplary in the manner in which they left
the OS/2 maketplace.

Consequently, there is still a great deal of good will towards them;
and they remain highly respected.

Responding, not to carry water for Warp City (and I should add, I've
been to both Kathmandu and Ice Station 9 in the same day as often as
I've been to Warp City) but just to point out:

There are 2 ways to use newsgroups.

One way is to "read" them, presumably gleaning info for your own
personal use.

The other way is to read them to offer help with things you've become
experienced at handling.

Tim Martin, of course, has a long history of generously offering help
here, and (back when I wasn't filtering his own posts because he gets
into long-running and useless arguments with kneejerk detractors) saw
that his help was quite timely, accurate, and thoughtfully offered.

Though I never met the cat, never spoke in fact with anyone who has
actually met him, I would still be willing to bet that he couldn't
"use OS/2 for 3 years" and stay quiet without trying to offer help to
others. It's a character flaw I can live with, especially when
compared to the rampant self-proud selfishness that an increasingly
WWF world is trying to justify.

They provide NOTHING. The rest of us are moving the distribution archives
around. Innoval's support web site has been dead (literally) for years now.

No it wasn't. It was a marketing move to try to get people to play with their
product in a less functional mode to entice them to buy the "full" version.
It's a common method to increase sales. There was nothing "nice" about it,
since by that time they had already stopped supporting most of the customers
who paid full price.

No, they didn't give "plenty" of advance warning, unless if you include the
bounced emails to "tech support."

Not hardly. Accepting payments for Postroad News and Mail licenses AFTER they
had discontinued support is as far from classy as you can get.

No, Doug, "a ton" there isn't, not hardly. Depending upon your choice of
delivery, the choice is certainly less than 5. The choice of NNTP (and mail)
clients with active support (now) is now down to 1.

Innoval's last two major releases were v2.00 and v3.00. Are you trying to
tell us that you were given a free upgrade to v2.00 and then again to v3.00,
while the rest of the world had to pay?

>I still use PRM and am happy with it.

You appear to be a very undemanding user.

>I'm pretty sure I got the newsreader for free too.

Only if you got your registration key in a warez newsgroup, I'm afraid. The
rest of us paid for it, and received no support assistance when it wouldn't
work. Innoval never released a free registration code for that product.

What's so exemplary about leaving the OS/2 marketplace? Virtually all
commercial OS/2 developers have done so by now, and I have no doubt
that countless other developers have done so too. Hell, a great number
of endusers have done so too. It's not like leaving behind OS/2 is
uncommon. Just ask IBM and they'll tell you (in a leaked memo,
probably)

I don't hate you Tim. In fact, I kinda like you. Your antics have been quite
amusing over the years. As far as starting flame wars, that was not my
intention. Rather, I intended to point out the irony of your statement.

Subj: Yamaha CRW6416S moved to 1542, CDRecord/2 can't see it

From: frank_mckenney@mindspring.com (Frank McKenney)

        [Followups set to comp.os.os2.setup.misc]

After three days of replacing cables, moving terminators, and shifting
devices on and off the SCSI cable, I finally gave up trying to make my
new Yamaha CRW6416S SCSI CD writer coexist with the two hard drives on
my motherboard's Adaptec 7880 50-pin cable (reported in
comp.periphs.scsi).

Since the Yamaha won't play nice with my hard drives, I pulled out an
old Adaptec 1542B and gave the Yamaha a SCSI bus of its very own
(internal cable). Unfortunately, I still can't access it through
CDRecord/2. Suggestions would be welcomed... if I can't get it _and_
my SCSI hard drives working at the same time, I need to send it back to
DCD this week or next.

A -scanbus with CDRecord/2 v1.8a32 never sees the Yamaha (Device ID=5 on
the 1542) as a CD drive. Here's what it reports:

--

Now, I really _don't_ have two Seagate ST32550Ns (;-) - the only device
set to ID=5 is the Yamaha, so that _has_ to be what is being reported as
"1,5,0". So... we do a device inquiry:

   cdrecord dev=1,5,0 -inq
Cdrecord release 1.8a32 Copyright (C) 1995-1999 Jrg Schilling
scsidev: '1,5,0'
scsibus: 1 target: 5 lun: 0
Using libscg version 'schily-0.1'
cdrecord: Warning: using inofficial libscg transport code version (C.

cdrecord: Cannot do inquiry for CD/DVD-Recorder.
cdrecord: I/O error. test unit ready: scsi sendcmd: retryable error
CDB: 00 00 00 00 00 00
status: 0x0 (GOOD STATUS)
cmd finished after 0.000s timeout 40s
cdrecord: The unit seems to be hung and needs power cycling.
--

I can't tell for certain, but it _looks_ like the ST32550 is being
"blipped' when I do this. In any case, there is no activity on the
Yamaha.

The "alternate" form of dev= is apparently not supported:

[22 H:\ftp\cdr2]cdrecord dev=aha154x:5,0 -inq
Cdrecord release 1.8a32 Copyright (C) 1995-1999 Jrg Schilling
scsidev: 'aha154x:5,0'
devname: 'aha154x'
scsibus: 0 target: 5 lun: 0
cdrecord: Invalid argument. Open by 'devname' not supported on this OS.
    Cannot open SCSI driver.

Here are the relevant drivers snipped from my CONFIG.SYS file:

REM aic7870 for A.I.R. motherbaord, aha154x for Adaptec 1542B (ISA)
    BASEDEV=aic7870.add /v
    BASEDEV=aha154x.ADD /v
    ...
REM *** OS/2 SCSI device support (required for BTSSCSI.SYS)
    BASEDEV=OS2SCSI.DMD
    ...
Rem --- The following two drivers are needed for CDRecord/2
Rem -- Moved to end of CONFIG.SYS to prevent hard hang on ASPIROUT
    device=c:\pause\aspirout.sys
    Rem -- OK: /SHARE, /SHARE /ALL
    basedev=os2aspi.dmd /share /all
    Rem ---

The 1542 doesn't recognize the Yamaha during the BIOS scan, but it has
been so long since I had anything _but_ hard drives hooked up I'm not
sure if it's looking for anything _besides_ hard drives. The OS/2
driver (AHA154X.ADD), however, does see it just fine, and reports it as
"YAMAHA CRW6416S 1.0c".

Any ideas on how I can get CDRecord/2 talking to the drive?

An alternative that I am finding increasingly effective is to only change
things on the system through a command file. This is my record of what I
did, and if it is OK I can repeat it if necessary with confidence. Of
course, to be really useful I keep the commands on a separate LAN connected
machine (and backed up) and, there are still things that I cannot figure out
how to do by command. and sometimes, when lots of little fiddly changes are
called for, a test system is nice to have. What I would really love is the
ability to copy a system to another drive and change all the drive letter
references. What a great test environment that would be.

Say, how do I add folders to the main Popup menu in Warp 4?

If only I could be disciplined enough not to go back in manually and
start making command line changes (unlogged, of course) when the
system won't come back up.

This issue ties to the one regarding "Desktop Portability", it seems
to me, and I'm surprised a better solution hasn't come up. I, too,
have attempted moving a C: install to D: and tried to make all the
reference changes, and failed. But we know the number of drive letter
entries are finite, so it's just a matter of building a data base that
ultimately includes everything. A true "registry", in other words.

On the Window$ side, I just saw an ad for "Desktop DNA", a product
that promised to "preserve and move everything that makes up your
system's identity---your bookmarks, dictionaries, palettes, and
more---through customized upgrades or entire system migrations." (the
refernce URL is http://www.miramarsys.com/dpub.htm ) and I suspect
something like this might turn into a successful product for somebody.

It would also be interesting to start with, in OS/2, a logging daemon
that recorded changes made in system files affecting configuration.

Hurry up, programmers. Get this thing written quickly and I'll put one
under my Xmas tree.

XFolder lets you do it, but you can't in Plain Warp. You can only add
objects of the Program persuasion via the popup menu.

Why not just drag off shadows of the folders you're using to your
desktop?

From: rcrane@octa4.net.au (Richard A Crane)

1.	I have recently purchased the above soundcard on the
basis that it was a crystal based one that worked well with
OS/2. But a trip to Aopen's usa site to download the os2
driver file seems to show a problem the exe file does not
appear to be either a dos or OS/2 executable. Attempts to
run it fire up a Windows session that dies with an
unexpected dos error 23. Which as i seem to recall means
that its a Win95 executable.
2.	Can someone confirm this to me and if possible an email
of the files that the executable creates would be wounderful
(i don't have Win95 on this machine).
3.	For those following some recent postings of mine - the
Athlon 500 is in and working - what a speed difference to

First install Xfolder -- get it from

	http://www2.rz.hu-berlin.de/~h0444vnd/os2.htm

Then, create a program by adapting this REXX script:

/* REXX */
call RxFuncAdd 'SysOpenObject', 'RexxUtil', 'SysOpenObject'
/*
Possible values of 'mode':

0 Default
1 Contents (Icon view for folders)
2 Settings
3 Help
4 Execute
5 Prompt dialog? (Undocumented)
101 Tree View
102 Details View
121 Palette? (Undocumented)
*/

mode = 0

call SysOpenObject "F:\desktop", mode, TRUE
/*
Opens the desktop folder on drive F:. Change the path to reflect the location
or object-id of any object on the system.
*/

...then place an program-object referring to this REXX file
in your Xfolder Configuration folder (but suggest you get
thoroughly acquainted with Xfolder and its superb docs
before trying this).

Yes, that is the infamous "you need Win95 for this" error.

You can download the drivers from the Crystal web site
and they put them in a regular ZIP file.
You should also send a note to AOpen about the
method they use to distribute the files. Who knows,
maybe it will do some good.

The FTP site isURL
ftp://ftp.crystal.com/pub/drivers/audio/

The web site is URL
http://www.crystal.com

The files are dependant on the card chipset.

Actually, at least a year ago I mentioned that I was an OS/2 user to our

going to continue supporting it. OS/2 still runs on the IOSP boxes that
control the big IBM boxes, but I don't know for how much longer.

I said "in the manner in which they left".

Subj: java v1.18 install?

From: mcray@interlog.com (Raymond McKenna)

Hello to all in OS/2 land.

I'm unsure that java v1.18 is properly installed. The
install process reaches 90+ % then it generates an error beep
and says that the install has failed. The java components seem
to be all there and the config.sys has been updated. It's Warp
v4 with FP12. Feature Install is current. The last 2 lines of
the install log output are as follows:

03-10-1999   2:53:12 AM **NULLID** :: Exception -1073741819
returned to instthrd.c 730l
03-10-1999   2:53:12 AM Java11 :: Installation complete.

Can anyone advise me one way or another on this issue?
Raymond.

I suppose you could do this with a little REXX... Make a REXX cmd file to open
an object on your
system, make program objects of this cmd file for each folder you want to open
via the popup menu, in
each program object settings provide the full object name of the folder you
want opened as an argument
to the cmd file, finally place the program objects for these cmd files in the
menu. An example of such a
cmd file would be :

/* load RexxUtil functions */
call RxFuncAdd 'SysLoadFuncs', 'RexxUtil', 'SysLoadFuncs'
call SysLoadFuncs

/* parse the arguments */
if arg() = 0 then signal noarg;
else parse arg objectName

/* open the object */
rc=SysOpenObject(objectName, "Default", "True")
if rc = 0 then signal openfail;

exit

noarg:
	say "No arguments were specified."

exit

openfail:
	say "Opening the object failed."

exit

Subj: Re: Folders in Popup

From: Terry Norton <ccsten@usa.net>

Here's how I added the Startup Folder to it.

I created a Rexx CMD file called StartupFolder.CMD. I used the
Object ID of the Startup Folder. The code is:

--------------snip------------------
/* */
Call RxFuncAdd 'SysLoadFuncs', 'RexxUtil', 'SysLoadFuncs'
Call SysLoadFuncs
rc=SysOpenObject('<WP_START>','DEFAULT','TRUE')
--------------snip------------------

Or, you can could also do the same thing using the path to the
folder:

--------------snip------------------
/* */
Call RxFuncAdd 'SysLoadFuncs', 'RexxUtil', 'SysLoadFuncs'
Call SysLoadFuncs
rc=SysOpenObject('C:\Desktop\OS!2 System\Startup','DEFAULT','TRUE')
--------------snip------------------

Then, on the popup menu select PROPERTIES, select the Menu tab.
Under Actions on menu press Create Another. Now type what you want
to call the item on the menu, then the path to your CMD file. (It's
actually easier if you just drag the folder to the entry box and let
OS/2 put the path in.)

Not likely. It was a while before I experimented with PRM, but it was a

I don't know about your situation, but I had something similar (if not
exactly the same) happen when I installed JAVA 1.1.7. It always worked
without any problems, and I had no trouble when I updated to JAVA
1.1.8. Somebody indicated that the problem has something to do with
only installing the runtime component of the whole JAVA development
package. I never did follow up on that, so I don't know whether that
was the case.

I suggest that you do the JAVA 1.1.8 update (available from:

 ftp://ftp.hursley.ibm.com/pub/java/fixes/os2/11/

), and use it. If there is an indication of any problems, try
uninstalling it, and do it again.

Hope this helps...

When I go to install WARP 4.0 (in partition G:), the FDISK

                                             **BIOS:8032MB

Nothing is formatted and BootManager is lost. What can I do to get FDISK

WARP 4.0?

That usually is a result of NOT updating the installation diskettes
with the IDEDASD.EXE update file.

But, in this case I did update Diskette #1 with IDEDASD.EXE contents.
There is an IBM1S506.SNP on Diskette #1 that I have no idea what it is.
I made no updates to Diskette #2.

Gosh, Alan, I'm certainly impressed with your economic analysis.

Bearing in mind that although older, I have the same setup as you. A Yamaha
4416SX SCSI, and an Adaptec, (ancient ISA) SCSI card. OS/2 recognized both,
even before recent updates.

Before we even get to CDRecord/2, does OS/2 recognize your setup??

Use the 'verbiose' parameter on both your IBM1s506.add. and your SCSI driver
statements in Config.sys, to make sure the OS recognizes everything in the
proper way, on boot. If so, and you can access each drive properly...

>A -scanbus with CDRecord/2 v1.8a32 never sees the Yamaha (Device ID=5 on
>the 1542) as a CD drive. Here's what it reports:

..make sure you are giving CDRecord/2 the proper parameters for your
drive. I have only one SCSI card, which is master 0, and the Yamaha is
second in the chain, so I would give CDrecord/2 LUN=0,2,0 as the destination
for my Yamaha CDR device. If you have two SCSI controllers in your computer
you may have to use LUN=1,X,X. Using the 'verbiose' paramaters, when you
boot, will help you pass on the correct parameters to CDRecord/2. The first
number is SCSI controller number, 0 if you have only one SCSI controller
installed, the second number is SCSI device number. I have no idea what
the third number is in the CDRecord/2 LUN=. I just know that 0 works for me.
It's needed to satisfy the UNIX definition of a drive port as far as I can
tell.

I don't see a problem with your hardware, I think you are just giving CDRecord
the wrong parameters in your device assignment. Assuming everything is OK
under OS/2 itself, just use the parameters OS/2 reports when enabling
'Verbiose'
mode in config.sys.

I would suspect that you are back to the original icons, and that you
may have, at some time, replaced the originals with something else.
The original System Editor icon looks like a page, with a pencil
poised over it, and an OS2Warp banner over the top. The original
clipboard viewer looks like a (surprise) clipboard. Do you have
something different, after you recreated the icons???

You can change the attached icons, by right mouse click on the icon->
Properties (Settings in warp 3)-> Icon-> then select one of the large
buttons (Find, would be the most common). If you don't have the
default icons, there must be a new icon attached, and that is stored
in the EAs for the files (actually, the original icon is there also).
Perhaps an EA editor might show you something, and allow you to remove
the "incorrect" icons. I don't know if it will help, but try out Henk
Kelder's EABROWSE program from:

http://www.os2ss.com/information/kelder/

Hope this helps.

This Is A Warp City EXCLUSIVE: AFST (in partnership with Innoval)
will be announcing full newsgroup access for OS/2 users of ISP800.
They are setting up the server today. This is a direct result of the
many signups so far and the very constructive emails they received
"strongly" but nicely explaining how important the newsgroups are
to OS/2 users since they need usenet for tech support and product

It is still very much beta.
The interface looks like a polished up ICQ Java and works pretty much
the same.

Some bugs that I noticed:
- Minimize icon is goofed up
- When un-minimizing, the window doesn't refresh properly
- Password is not hidden (but I think it is corrected with the "i" or "j"
release).
- Doesn't seem to remember my user info, must query the server each time.

ICQ/2 does show pending requests for authorization, it does have sounds
when I get messaged, and the basic functionality seems there and it works
faster than ICQ Java, but progress is slow.
(Understandble, since the author is releasing it for free and doing it on
his spare time).

What bugs me about ICQ in general is that the database is not compatible!
Between ICQ Java, ICQ Win95 and ICQ/2, I have to request authorization
from my friends THREE times to get everything going. :(

Not at all. Innoval made Post Road Mailer and Jstreet available for *free*
after they dropped out. That's pretty darn generous. They didn't have to.

And Jstreet is still being developed at http://www.polarbar.org.

Considering how even IBM has dropped development for Warp client and there is
no reasonably sized client market left for OS/2, why should any company
develop for OS/2 unless profit is meaningless?

It's a sad fact. We OS/2 users can use the client OS but there's little
incentive anymore to develop for it.

I have struck the same symptoms, also when using the latest (DD001) drivers
on the diskettes.
It doesn't crash and burn, but does display the same **BIOS line. It also
misinterprets the
primary drive sequence. However, when I boot from hard drive the same software
(fdisk etc)
works.
The only thing I can think of at the moment is that I did something wrong in
the original
partitioning of the disk and there is something wrong in the partition table.

Subj: ESS 1978 Setup

From: Stefan Pelz <Stefan.Pelz@orthogon.de>

Hi all,

I'm using Daniela's modified ESS 1978 device driver (which is
originally for the 1968 I think). The drivers seems to load,
but mmpm does not work. I cannot play any sounds.

The hardware manager does not show an entry for the ESS,
forcing hardware-detection didn't help either.
Scan_pci shows the ESS device at PCI INT A, which is mapped
to IRQ 10.
Do I need to set the proper interrupt for the device driver?
What are the options for MASTR2E.SYS?
The multimedia installation program added a single line
to the config.sys:

device=c:\mmos2\mastr2e.sys N:MAEST$  (or the like ...)

Anybody got a working setup?

Yes, I was succesful with Daniela's driver. It worked for my Toshiba
laptop with PCI Maestro sound card. The only flaw is the sound level,
quite low compared with the obtained in Win9x.

Where did you see these switches for OS2DASD.DMD documented?

According to my command reference (WSeB):-

There is another basedev - OPTICAL.DMD. See if that offers you anything...

Also, I've had some 128MB disks for many years and some of those used
HPOFS.IFS - HPFS for optical disks. This is no longer supported, but in
desperation might be worth trying. Not sure where you would find it, though...

I'm trying to install the Bootmanager (Warp 4) on an 9GB
SCSI-U2W HD. FDISK only shows 8 GB, the remaining 800 MB
are unusable.
I was told that it is a problem with an outdated device
driver. So I copied the new aic78u2.add to install-disk #1.
Now it does not boot at all from floppy.
Is there any way to get the bootmanager running (and use
all the disk)?

Bob,

You are right! I noticed that the 'new' IBM1S506.ADD is in \os2\boot and it
works OK booting. But, if I go from diskettes, it doesn't work. I noticed
also that my BIOS says that the disk is 9032 MB or something like that.

It seems that I am wasting 1 GB of space :( I probably used the 'old'
IBM1S506.ADD
which didn't support greater than 8 GB disks when I originally partitioned and
now it seems I am stuck with the lost space.

Have you tried to change this into

From the readme that came with Sam Detwiler's newDASD2,

"
------------------------------------
Parameters supported by OS2DASD.DMD
------------------------------------

/RF - "treat Removable media as a Fixed disk"
This parameter will treat removable media as a fixed disk allowing
it to be formatted as either FAT or HPFS and allowing removable
disks to be partitioned. See application notes above for a
   description of drive letter ordering.

/OF - "treat Optical disks as Fixed Disks"
This parameter will cause all optical drives found to be treated as
fixed disks. This will allow the media to be formatted as FAT or
HPFS. Low level formatting of optical media is not supported at
this time. Media formatted previously by OPTICAL.SYS or
OPTICAL.DMD will not be accessible (as described above in IMPORTANT
NOTES #2). Media must be FDISK'd in order to be usable.

"

AFAIK, these are still true, despite the current 'no parameters' description.

Does it show 8GB == 8032MB which is a BIOS limit or does it show 8GB as
8500MB which is really 9.1Gb in hard disk manufacturer terms. They count
using million million bytes where FDISK and CHKDSK count using 1024 x 1024
x 1024. The latter choice means that 9,100,000,000 bytes shows up around
about 8600MB.

Does this mean I have the wrong version of socket services loaded ?

What else could be causing the problem?...

When the XF86Sup.sys loads it reports that it needs Fp17 or better
for all functions to be available.

Is this a problem? Will XFree86 work properly?

I haven't got it to work as I had a Trap in CONSOLE$ which was
happening whenever I shutdoen WSeB. I have reinstalled and it
has stopped happening but I don't have TCPIP etc installed at
the moment so haven't retried XFree86/2.

I am testing WSeB in preparation for my new SMP PC at work.

This has been fixed in the last few months. Your XF86SUP.SYS should say
v1.511 on bootup. It's available from the XFree86OS/2 home page.

So what does you entry in Config.Sys look like?
Which info does the hardware-manager show about the ESS

Thanks.

It is, kinda. TBS said they would look into writing a driver, but time
constraints from other projects would be an issue. Everything else is
true, though. Theta Band Software has a "no-compete" business model.
They don't release software that competes with other software. In the
OS/2 market, releasing a product that competes with another product is
suicide.

there are two ways to access a SCSI-harddisk:

1.) via the appropoate driver for your SCSI-Card

2.) via BIOS using INT13H .

It seems that your system is using the latter one and is thus
limited by your Mainboard's BIOS .
To advice , what driver to use, you should tell us which
SCSI-Card you are using. The aic78u2.add will only work with
some Adaptec Cards ( AIC7890-chip I think ).

I have been successfully using the Fujitsu 640SE drive for quite some
time on OS/2. The disks are partitioned (1 partition) and formatted for
HPFS. I have a mixture or 128, 230, and 540 disks. All working great and
very reliable. So what you are attempting is very possible!

You need to disable by rem'ing out all OEM drivers for this device.
Only use the drivers from Sam Detwiler's package NEWDASD2. I think these
drivers have now been incorporated into the fixpacks (Driver fixpacks).
Here are the pertinent statements from my config.sys:

BASEDEV=OS2DASD.DMD /rf /of               (these switches came from
                                           Sam's package)
rem DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\OPTICAL.DMD /V
BASEDEV=OS2SCSI.DMD
BASEDEV=AHA152X.ADD (running on PCMCIA card in
                                           thinkpad)

I agree with Meinholf that you appear to be accessing the disk via
IBMINT13.I13 instead of the correct driver. However one complication may
be that OS/2 tries desperately to respect the original partitioning scheme
and geometry that was used when the disk was first partitioned. If you did
your initial partitioning from a boot that was using IBMINT13.I13 and
subsequently switched to the correct driver for later boots then the
geometry used by IBMINT13.I13 will be written into the partition table and
OS/2 will try to use it in preference to that reported by the new driver.

The only way around this is to delete all partitions from the disk (with
attendant loss of all data) and then reboot the machine. After the reboot
- which must be using the correct driver for the controller - you can then
repartition as you want.

First off Warp 3 out-of-the box will only support speeds up to
57600 bps (a 14,400 modem). To support faster modems at full-
speed you'll either need the updated com.sys driver found in any
of the later service packs (say fixpack 32 or above) or you can
use a 3rd-party com driver like Ray Gwinn's shareware SIO.sys
available at HOBBES. But to the matter at hand...

When a modem in Warp 3 sticks at 1200, it's a pretty good chance
that that particular modem needs to have the port speed set for
it by issuing the MODE COMx command from an OS/2 command prompt
(where x=the port your modem is on). If your modem is on com1,
try issuing the command MODE COM1 57600 OS/2 should reply
"asynchronous communications mode set". Then fire up the modem
to see whether it's any zippier.

If issuing the mode command solves the 1200 speed problem, you
can set OS/2 to issue the command at bootup by adding the line
to your config.sys CALL=C:\OS2\MODE.COM COM1 57600

Check to make sure you use the correct path on your machine to
the mode command, and that you use the full filename plus
extension. If you later get a higher-octane com.sys, or shift
over to using sio.sys for your com needs, this value may be set at
115200, rather than 57600

Good luck,

I have Xfree86 3.3.3 and Gimp 1.0.2, and would like to create some
Russian text graphics in the Gimp. Question is, how do I use cyrillic
fonts in Xfree86? In os/2 apps, such as Embellish, it's dead easy with
a little utility which switches the keyboard to upper ascii, and thus
uses the upper character set in fonts which have it. I've hunted all
through Holger Veit's site, the mailing list, xfree86.org, gimp.org,
and so far have missed whatever exists.

Does anyone have any ideas on doing this?

But I think 8620 requires that you have installed WR08610

It requires either WR08600 or WR08610. WR08600 is the MPTS that comes with
TCP/IP v4.1 so he'll have at least that already.

Thanks for mentioning Xfolder. It's a great freeware app
and I use it to add program as well as folder objects to my
context [popup] menus.

However, in a few instances I do indeed use another
method to open folders-- not just programs-- from a RMB
click in my popup menus.

It only requires 3 lines in a short CMD file [the first
2 lines here are just comments]:

/* OpenDetails.CMD REXXX program to open a folder from
pop-up menu */
/* In Folder object's PARAMS field, enter pathname of folder
+ % */
parse arg command
call RxFuncAdd 'SysSetObjectData', 'RexxUtil',
'SysSetObjectData';
call SysSetObjectData command, "OPEN=DETAILS";

Or, if you wish to open the folder in Icon view, then
sub "ICONS" for "DETAILS" above and save that script with
the "OpenIcon.CMD" filename or something similar.

Store the CMD file and variations in any convenient
directory. Then you may create multiple desktop objects that
each refer to the same CMD file. The difference between each
object is in the Parameters field, where you enter the
complete pathnames of the folders you wish to open.
For example, the "Program" page, which is the first Notebook
page, could look like this for one typical object:

[Path and file name]
       F:\Menus\Scripts\OpenDetails.CMD

[Parameters]
       D:\Tools\ %

Perhaps you would name this sample object "OpenTools"
and you could give it a pretty icon of your choice. The
important thing is that clicking on the OpenTools object
would run the CMD file and thus open the Tools folder in a
Details view...

...and that's the trick you use for opening folders from
your popup menu! You just add such objects to the "Menu"
page of your Properties Notebook and then you can open any
folders [such as Tools in the example] from the popup menu.
Adding the CMD file object overcomes the limitation you
ordinarily would have of opening just programs from that
popup menu.
