Subj: Possible to upgrade ProNews?

From: jkv@vossen.org (Joseph K. Vossen)

I am a registered user for ProNews/2, version 1.0. I have noticed
that several people have a more current version than 1.0. Is it
possible to obtain a more recent version of ProNews/2 than 1.0? If
so, where? If I obtain a copy, will the registration 'key' for 1.0
work in a more recent version? If not, is Panacea still taking $$$
for this or does BMT Micro handle this?

thanks

The last version of ProNews/2 released was the 1.50Beta. It may be
retrieved from Hobbes. Lookfor .... pn2_15b1.zip

The big news in v.1.5 was multiple news servers. See What's New quoted
at the bottom, here.

But all that's out there is 3 beta builds, and one debug beta,
released before they went keel up. Here's a FastFTP Search link:

	http://ftpsearch.lycos.com/cgi-bin/search?form=medium&query=pn2_15*zi
p

I haven't seen or heard reports of substantial differences between the
beta builds, but the last build has file dates inside of May 10 1998.
If you can't find that build out there, write me and I'll mail it to
you.

Sure does, if you have one. Or you can still delete the PNNMON
Application in OS2.INI when the nag screen gets to you.

> If not, is Panacea still taking $$$
> for this or does BMT Micro handle this?

Panacea, no, but BMTMicro will accept your money, last I heard. We've
been told (not by BMTMicro, though, as far as I know) that the
developers are trying to get it together to do some more work on this,
and I for one have pledged to pay two registration fees as soon as
they do, once for my previous use and once to use the new code. But
they haven't taken my bait, and Christmas is coming (again) when
everybody can use a few extra bucks, so I guess they're dead dead
dead. I'm very sorry about that, because this was inspired
programming, to my eye, and it would be nice if they'd clean up some
of the remaining problems even if they don't add any more features.

----------------from README.TXT:

Whats new in this version
-------------------------

o Added support for multiple servers. It is now possible to specify
multiple servers in the ProNews settings and subscribe to groups on
these different servers.

o Support for books. News groups can now be logically organized into
books (which can be nested).

o Group aliases. You can now give groups an alias to make it easier
to
see which group is which in the control panel.

o Support for user defined groups. Users may now create custom groups
to hold messages. There are options to copy to these groups and
filters/HotFilters can be created to automatically copy messages into
these groups for later reading.

o Drag and drop for changing the order of groups and books, changing
the server to which a newsgroups is subscribed, changing the server of
an outgoing post, copying messages into custom user groups, changing
the order of items in the queue, and saving articles to a file.

o Added support for RGB colors in the control panel and article
windows. Any color visible on your system can be used instead of the
16 you were limited to in earlier versions.

o Added support for reusing a single message reading window. This
reduces memory usage and speeds up the loading of newsgroups. This is
controlled via a setting so it is still possible to use the program as
it was in previous versions.

o Significant increase in startup speed.

New Minor features in 1.5 Beta 1
--------------

o Added Explore Thread option, which will show the complete thread via
DejaNews/Netscape.

o Added the ability to chain menu commands together. (They are
separated by a semicolon in the toolbar dialog).

o Tree expansion items were added to the group window menus.

o Backspace now acts as pageup in the group windows.

o Added the option to use a signiture file for posting. This allows
sharing a signiture with other programs.

o Added help items to the toolbar pallette.

o Added Get All/New headers for selected groups to the control panel
toolbar pallette.

o Added % as a valid URL character.

o Added confirmations for deleting books.

o Added confirmations for deleting servers.

o Added an RMB menu to the 'followup-to' entry field in the posting
options dialog. It contains a list of the groups you are subscribed
to
and the 'poster' option.

o Made it possible to add a toolbar button to change the font of the
body pane on the fly.

o When forwarding articles the header of the forwarded article is now
included.

o Added Up/Down buttons to the filter pages to make it easier to
reorder filters.

o Beefed up the socket/NNTP error reporting dialogs to give text for
each type of message and state which server/group generated the error.

o Added setting and menu option to expand trees with highlighted
articles.

o Added menu options to mark entire threads read/unread.

o Added an option to make URL launching need a double click instead of
the current single click.

o Added option to set up ProNews not to keep article bodies from
program run to program run.

o Added an option to send yourself a copy of all outgoing posts.

o Added an option not to use the No-Spam setting in the Reply-To.

o Added -On and -Off command line options to allow the forcing of
ProNews into online or offline mode regardless of program settings.

o When subscribing to a newsgroup the user now has the option to 'get
all headers', 'get no headers', and 'get no headers and catchup
group'.

o Added confirmations for get all bodies for all groups.

o Added confirmations for closing group windows.

o Added a Delete Thread option.

Maybe you should put the latest build on Hobbes, so that you don't end

Cheers, yourself. The betas after the first one were distributed
privately, and hobbes is probably still fussy about listing such
things. (Funny, but they don't seem to be relaxed or thoughtful on the
subject of abandonware. Being a center for Higher Education and all.)

But here's a listing of the files I've got. I renamed the second and
third beta, and the odd name contains the debug version of files from
beta 3:

  pn2_15b1.zip 1,564,097 05/06/1998 15:28

I'd be happy to forward them to anybody who wants to post them

This happens if you don't have an environment variable TEMP that points to a
temporary directory; the need for this variable is omitted from the
installation instructions. Add

	SET TEMP=C:\TEMP

or similar to CONFIG.SYS.

Hope this helps.

It really help me. Wrote the line on CONFIG.SYS, created the TEMP directory
(just used the E: drive instead of C:) and rebooted. It worked on the first
try!
It not only allowed me to postpone messages but also save messages from
my inbox.

Funny, I have gotten it on the screen display, but haven't
noticed it printing. Comes and goes here as well (haven't
seen it in a few weeks). Might be a good thing to mention
on the PMMail listserv, where who knows but it could end the

The only time I see THAT "bug", is when I get e-mail from somebody
using Eudora Lite (there could be other e-mail programs that do the
same thing, but that is the only place that I see it). It looks like
something is munged in the character translation tables (probably, in
Eudora lite, or in Win9x). What I do, to get around the problem, is
ignore it on the screen, and if I want to print the message, I
transfer it to my word processor (happens to be Lotus WordPro, but any
should do), and change all of the incorrect characters (the AE thing
is ASCII 142) to the correct characters.

By the way, your example came through, not as the A with attached E,
but as an upside down hollow T, which is ASCII 202.

Hope this helps...

One day after you posted your msg re. problems with v4.10, a
new port of Pine for OS/2 was released. It's Pine v4.21 and
it should be worth your while to d/l it. You'll find it at
Hobbes Incoming.
The zip file is just over 1 meg and is listed first on the
page [if you use this URL to sort by date] at

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-browse?sh=1&button=Browse&d

The instructions for this new version are better, btw, and
do include sample lines you can use to set the Pine
environment variables, either through your config.sys or a
CMD file, to ensure that Pine can find the necessary Home
and Temp dirs plus the User name.

Acc'g to the programmer, Nicholas Sheppard, he has "fixed
all the serious bugs discovered in the 4.10 releases." His
website is
http://www.zeta.org.au/~nps/software/pine/en/index.html

so check it out.
