I was wondering if you statically link the required libraries to MAME/2, or
if you dynamically link them?

Which ones in particular? MAME will not function without MDM.DLL, DIVE.DLL,
and GPMIXER.DLL being present. They are still "dynamically linked" (as
opposed
to having a copy of their code included in the EXE), but they are required on
startup. Are you referring to "dynamically linked" as using DosLoadModule
instead of an import library? I do not use this method.

I suppose I could do a review on it... I'm afraid I don't have that much
experience with games in general,
so it's hard to compare this game with others, but I'll give it a shot.

Subj: Drilling Billy : problem

From: "Luc Van Bogaert" <luc.vanbogaert.nospam@pandora.be>

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone here could help me with this problem I'm having with
the Billy game by
Nothwind Software?

The game plays fine in a DOS session and installation went without any
problem, but it seems that I'm
stuck in only two of the five worlds that are in the game : I'm only allowed
to play the Jungle and
Construction levels. If I enter a door in one of these levels, it keeps taking
me back again to these levels
all over again. So far, I haven't been able to select or enter one of the
other levels like egypt, island, etc.

Has anyone ever been able to enter these levels and whishes to share how?

Help would be very much appreciated. Thanks,

MAMERun Joystick Device Driver Contest.

What is it?

Write your own joystick device driver for OS/2 and you could win $290
plus valuable prizes and earn the respect and gratitude of OS/2
gamers around the world! With the many new games available and the
advance of game controllers there arises a need for a better
joystick device driver than IBM's advanced joystick device driver.
Support for new controller features, such as 8+ buttons or USB, will
greatly enhance the OS/2 gaming experience for gamers as well as
developers.

Jaime,

Thanks for the help, but I have the full CD version and I'm really finishing
all the levels. It just keeps
taking me back to these two worlds. I really don't have a clue what the
problem is. I've been playing
these same levels over and over again, collecting points, but there's no way

Cool, anyone else want to try doing any reviews of other games just
send a draft to editor@os2voice.org. In this month's VOICE
Newsletter, due out Dec 15th, there will be a review of "KidStuff for
OS/2" as well as "Classic Video Games for OS/2". Hopefully some more
games in future issues.

One feature I would really like is for "snap to double size"
to be permanently settable (at 1600x1200 normal size is pretty
small!) How about a "x4" mode?

Other than that beta 10 works well (Celeron 400MHz) with
no speed problems!

There's a couple of (big?) features disabled for the demo version, so
there's not too much to review yet.

However, I did play around with it a bit last night, and I must say it is
really quite well done! I did not experience any bugs so far, and the
text, no typos, the graphics and animations very nice.
No, it's not up to the level of, say Starcraft or Expendable, but this
type of game doesn't call for that sort of graphics.

Mind you, I kept getting clobbered...

Marty,

Why can't you use the VESA 2.0 / 3.0 compatibility built into most of today's
video
cards? Just like the DOS version of MAME.

Unfortunately, nothing works across the board. Conformance to VESA standards
is even less important to modern video card makers as most cards require
specific drivers to access all of their features anyway. This is one of the
reasons Scitech is in business and doing quite well.

In some experimentation I've done with FSDIVE, SVGALIB (ported from Linux),
and
the Vio function calls, I have yet to find something that will allow a Matrox
card to go above 320x200x8. While this might not be important to everybody,
it's extremely important to me, as I have only one system and it has a Matrox
Millenium II.

My last remaining hope is in Scitech's MGL, but so far any apps I have built
with MGL have locked up my system.

There does seem to be quite a bit disabled (like being able to play it :),
but otherwise it looks very nice, pretty graphics. However, I must admit, I
have been more into first-person shooters (like being able to walk around in
a virtual world -- corridores, halls and other stuff -- maybe even have to
defend myself against some big creature thing :) than role playing games. If
perhaps there couple could be "shareware levels" for the demo copy to play,
to ....get into the game :) it'd be nice.

Otherwise, very nice work indeed!

Subj: an OS/2 game using MGL rather than ....

From: "Trancser" <jbergman@ixc.ixc.net>

I would really like to see an example of a game for OS/2 using MGL rather
than DIVE. Does anyone know if such exists? (if not, perhaps create one :)

Interesting, after being "clobbered" twice I figured out how to do
some clobbering of my own and won the demo twice.

To the programmers: Nicely done! I look forward to being able to get
the full version as RPG's are my favorite. Much more mind stimulation
than the plethora of walk-around-and-kill-everything-in-sight games
that are the rage. When will it be available?
