This raises an interesting point with respect to the Aurora JFS, which
supports 2TB files:

1. Does DosRead()/DosWrite() just read/write to the end?

2. Does DosSetFilePtr() allow incrementing the file pointer up to 2TB
by successive calls with the increment set to 2GB-1?

If not, how does it work?

If I get a few free minutes, I'll give it a try. But, if someone knows...

Take a look at ADDENDUM.INF of the WSeB toookit . There are some
new functions like DosOpenL(), DosSetFilePtrL() and DosSetFileSizeL()
to deal with this issue. DosRead() and DosWrite() does not seem to be
affected.

Hi, Irv. Does that mean OS20MEMU is essentially abandoned? :-(

Yes, I know it's EWS (and released to us through the good graces of IBM
and you folks -- thanks for what you've done!), but I vastly prefer its
simplified memory-per-process display to Theseus.

Does anyone else know about any other nice quick-and-dirty per-process
memory display utilities for OS/2?

Gail, I'm using an Elsa Winner 2000 Office - 8 ViVo. This problem
began with FP#11 and continues with Elsa cards. I sent a problem
report to IBM. I've also reported it to Elsa several months ago, but
they really don't care since they've decided to stop OS/2 development
and support. I've never received a reply from them. ..period. I
found that the ONLY thing that worked for me was to drop back to 65k
colors. Then everything works fine.

Yes, I did that. And, looked at bsedos.h. Both define the new 64 bit
IO functions, but do not answer the questions above, or others like:
If a file was created with standard 32 bit functions (DosOpen()), and
it be opened with DosOpenL?

This is a pretty major enhancement. It would be nice to have a full
description.

TOP 2.01 doesn't show anything at all about process memory usage.

[Searching]

I forgot about the PMEM utility that comes with TOP. :-) That might
be good enough by itself for what I want. Except that it is apparently
dependent on OS20MEMU.DLL and OS20MEMU.SYS to get its information.

Does it still work when OS20MEMU does not?

Some ideas:

You can activate "print while spooling", or you can disable spooling
at all (System Setup, right mouse click on Spooler). If you disably
the spooler, there is no need for a spool file.

Also you can play with the printer setting "printer specific format".

 Hallo Bill!

 12/03/1999 the author "heloman <heloman@my-deja.com>"
posted the following message in comp.os.os2.apps:

- For some strange reason the font size in the message
- screens has changed > smaller. Went to edit
- preferences - fonts. Adjusted the 4 selections but
- these change the other screens but not the one that
- actually displays the senders message(s). What/where
- is the control to change this font size? Tried a
- quick dirty boot (cad) in hopes it would correct
- itself but it didn't. Any help appreciated.....

Since I experienced the same thing I watched this post
for several days to see if anybody would reply to it.
But to my suprise nobody did.
I started to pook around to see if I had missed anything
when installing NS404. But I could'nt find anything.
I even compared it with the winloze version but the messsage
font where much smaller there too
(even though the messages were easier to read)

I began to suspect the Deja had done some HTML changes,
since it was *only* font size of posted messages.
Everything else worked as before.

Then I stumbled on your post and Buddy Donnely confirmed
my thoughts.

So it's nothing wrong with your eys and
you're not hallucinating this !!!

It's strange though that there were so few posts
regarding this.

Subj: Norman AntiVirus error

From: wkoep1@N^O^S^P^A^Mfastlane.net

I have installed v4.72 on Warp Connect FP38.

Upon executing NVCPM, has anyone ever received the following error msg:
      NBSInit() Returned 0x00030002
Pressing <enter> returns another error dialog box with something about
couldn't create "Disk Siblings". Then, NVCPM just closes down.

Also, when it does run, a SYS0031, a device attached to the system is
not functioning properly, can occur thus halting the virus scanning. I
am scanning C: D: E: F: G: -> all hard drives, all SCSI, and all working
perfectly until Norman's install. The log report just states "*
Scanning aborted."

I've unloaded Norman numerous times, cleaned the OS2 ini files with
INIMaint and Hank's utility and reinstalled Norman to no avail.

I haven't quite determined the correlation but after downloading and
installing the registered version of Norman antivirus, my machine will
not shutdown properly after Norman has been run (I have to press CAD).
Before the installation of Norman, I uninstalled eval copies of Sophos
and Antiviral Toolkit by ?. Therefore, the shutdown problem was caused
by Norman or the uninstalling.

You're exactly right. I had a bit of trouble changing to 65k. After I booted,
the Elsa Resolution Manager wouldn't come up - said there was no Elsa card
recognized. After I had done several other things, none of them having
anything to do with modifying the system, I tried again and it worked.
Strange!

Even if IBM won't fix this reported problem, it seems like someone could tell
us what to back out to get back to fully functioning drivers. I did notice in
reading the text associated with the latest Elsa drivers that at one time
(FP3?) a new version of SOFTDRAW.DLL caused strange colors. I tried backing
that out, but it didn't change anything. I really don't want to remove FP12,
because it seems like everything is working well and that an annoying
problem has been fixed, but I like to have true color when I'm working on
photographs.

If I transfer the files from jre11 to java11, Moneydance and java

From: "Wolf Kirchmeir" <greywolf@onlink.net>

When I use the scroolbar on Netscape 4.61 whil downloading, there is
sometimes the following effect:

The cahracters in the NS window become corrupted (they look "greeked"), and
several icons on the DT and on the Warpenter bar become partrly or wholly
strange. I addition, the ""group read" icons in PMNews become courrupted,
too.

Minimising and restroing windows doesn't change anything. Closing the program
and restarting thme works.

Starting an OS/2 full screen command line session, then exiting restores the
desktop appearance.

Is there a fix for this?

I do have the omni drivers, but I couldn't figure out how to add it in

Rich, unfortunately, yes, consider it abandoned. The program needed to
have a manual update done everytime the kernel changed. Wasn't a big
deal when we released 'official' FP's randomly and far apart. Last year,
we were releasing FP's monthly, and this meant a monthly manual change.

I assume you've already set up the ZIP cartridge as FAT and given it the
correct name.

Given that this is for a standalone system dump (e.g. "dump as much as
we can without depending on anything that might have been tromped on and
without disturbing anything"), I'd expect it to be using BIOS Int13h
calls to write the data to disk(ette).

Is your ZIP drive BIOS-addressable? Or is it only available once OS/2
drivers have been loaded (which the standalone dump code has to assume
_might_ have been mangled)?

Open your "templates" folder and drag a printer template onto
your desktop (or RMB on an existing printer object and select
"Create another...printer"). Open the Settings notebook, select
"Printer driver" and RMB on one of the driver icons in the
"Installed drivers" window. Select "Install...New Driver" and
you're off and running.

I should have thought of this sooner. There is
another possible explanation. This is an old bug in
the installation/configuration routines going back to
WARP Connect. They put the statements in CONFIG.SYS
in the wrong sequence. I have this at home, where I
connect over a modem:

DEVICE=F:\MPTN\PROTOCOL\SOCKETS.SYS /V
DEVICE=F:\MPTN\PROTOCOL\AFOS2.SYS
DEVICE=F:\MPTN\PROTOCOL\AFINET.SYS
DEVICE=F:\MPTN\PROTOCOL\AFNB.SYS /S:130 /C:225 /N:21
RUN=F:\MPTN\BIN\AFNBINI.EXE
RUN=F:\MPTN\BIN\CNTRL.EXE
CALL=F:\OS2\CMD.EXE /Q /C F:\MPTN\BIN\MPTSTART.CMD
RUN=F:\IBMCOM\PROTOCOL\NBTCP.EXE
DEVICE=F:\IBMCOM\PROTOCOL\NETBEUI.OS2
DEVICE=F:\IBMCOM\PROTOCOL\TCPBEUI.OS2
DEVICE=F:\IBMCOM\PROTOCOL\NETBIOS.OS2
DEVICE=F:\IBMLAN\NETPROG\RDRHELP.200
IFS=F:\IBMLAN\NETPROG\NETWKSTA.200 /I:F:\IBMLAN /N
DEVICE=F:\IBMCOM\MACS\NULLNDIS.OS2

At the office, where I'm connected to the LAN over a
NIC, that last line reads this:

DEVICE=F:\IBMCOM\MACS\EL90X.OS2

But the rest of it is the same. On both systems I
have a serial mouse on COM1. COM1, COM2, what's a
COM port between friends . . . ? <:-))

Another thing occurs to me. I have noticed that
sometimes it matters where your statements for your
video support appear relative to your networking
statements. If you install certain video drivers, or
even just upgrade to a new release, they like to
delete their old statements & insert all their
statements at the bottom of CONFIG.SYS. The Matrox
drivers do this & I always have to undo their damage.
(And they like to change rem to REM, but that's
another complaint.) But sometimes the video driver
statements have to come before the networking
statements. This is very much dependant on your
particular combination of hardware. At the office,
I'm running the GRADD driver for an ATI RAGE
something & that seems to be OK with all the GRADD
statements at the very bottom. At home, I have the
Matrox statements before the networking stuff. Seems
to me I recall at the office we had Compaq something
desktop systems a few years ago & the Matrox
statements needed to come before the networking
statements, which supported a Compaq proprietary
something NIC. It's all a matter of experimenting &
coming up with the answer by trial & error.

think they are really the same), and OMNI, until the EPOMNI driver
showed up. I scrapped both, and just use EPOMNI (it did not take me
very long to realize that EPOMNI is far superior). IMO it gives the
quality of the German driver, and the performance of the OMNI driver,
without any hassels.

You can find EPOMNI at the OS/2 device driver web site:
http://service.software.ibm.com/os2ddpak/html/index.htm

Hope this helps...

When the runtime came out together with the JRE I tried to do a file
by file comparison. The JRE might have had some extra files (I forget)
but the *principal* difference I was able to identify was in file
naming - the JRE distribution contained (and referred to) javri.dll
and javrr.dll, and had an EXECUTABLE install module which renamed these
files and their references over to javai.dll and javar.dll . (For
instance, made sure \java11\lib\jre.prp names javai.dll ) Whereas
the non-JRE runtime package distributed these files, and referenced
them, by their javai.dll and javar.dll names.

I don't know if there is any difference between *installing* the JRE
package vs. *applying* the non-JRE runtime. However, if anyone merely
applied the JRE without running the install, I *would* expect problems.

From: bnc@webone.com.au

For some time people have been mentioning here that they have a problem with a
Stardock application.

My problem was/is Object Navigator. When you opened a drive(this varied as to
which one),
the harddisk light came on and you could not close Object Navigator. In
addition you could not shut down.

The cause............CHKDSK.LOG.

I managed to reproduce the problem using another product by doing a text
search on chkdsk.log.

I have just done some limited testing.
1) ran a command file that deleted all the chkdsk.log's off my hard disks.
2) Used Object Navigator with no problems for 15mins.

Running this verion of chkdsk

CHKDSK32 DLL 121895 8-10-99 3:18p A...

I, too, have been seeing this dumb problem. I have the same level of
CHKDSK32.DLL on this system.
However, it does not happen on all my partitions, all of the time. Any idea
what corrupts those
files?
What was the other app you were using to test??

I posted a question on the Stardock 'stardock.os2.support' forum, and
someone there responded
that Stardock told him to erase WP ROOT. SF from that drive, after running
CHKDSK x: /F:2. I tried
that with no luck at all.

Frank,

The ZIP100 is running off an Adaptec 1505 and depends on the SCSI drivers.

I'm hoping that the Sci-Tech display doctor driver ultimately works
well with these cards so that we can use that instead of the Elsa
drivers. Worst case scenario is to ditch the Elsa card and buy a
Matrox G400!

This is an old problem. I have seen it discussed here before and I
have experienced it on my machine. As you have noted, it's not much
of a problem since it is usually safe to delete the chkdsk.log before
starting the Object Navigator, or pointing it at the root directory of
a drive with one of these files.

In those rare cases in which chkdsk has found something that you want
to examine, you can view the file using a special program. This
viewer is mentioned in some of the documentation that came with chkdsk
-- I don't remember where, but I do remember that it wasn't in the
first place that I expected to find it. Getting the program, even if
I never use it, means that I don't need to find where IBM hid it.

Richard,
I agree with the above except that the point of the message was that it was
the CHKDSK.LOG
file that was causing the problem.
It would have saved a lot of heartache if we had known this earlier.
The second point is that it is not really a Stardock problem as I think you
could reproduce it
with any program that does a TEXT search of a chkdsk.log file(that is how I
found it).

Ok, this is the way I understand it.
1) you boot your machine and access say two of your drives.
2) this turns on the DIRTY bit for each drive.
3) You shut down unexpectedly for some reason
4) On reboot a chkdsk is run automatically, which creates a chkdsk.log

Then if you attempt to read this file, apprently with anything other than the
special
program mentioned by Richard, you are history.

Thanks. I understand that sometimes it has to happen, and as it stands
Theseus/2 is a pretty cool "replacement", at least in some ways (yeah,
okay, it's really an immeasurably nicer superset <grin>).

Any chance of including a quick-and-dirty command-line call to Theseus
so it can display a quickie per-process memory summary? The dropping of
OS20MEMU apparently kills both tools I know of that do that (one being
itself), and I'm usually just interested in basic Owned/InMem numbers
(so I can see on a high level who's using how many memory).

>Sorry,

Nah, you don't have to be. OS20MEMU was a useful tool, but I know that
maintaining stuff is an effort (particularly when it's so closely tied
to OS changes), and I really appreciate your honest response. :-)

No such luck. The problem kept coming back. Finally I went back
to fixpak 10 and the problem disappeared. So at least in my
case, FP12 is unusable because it corrupts the disk structure
for executable and object files created by Watcom C 10.6 .
I guess I wait for FP13, if that ever comes.

Subj: NS 4.16 SYS3175 errors partial solution?

From: mike.luther@ziplog.com

in researching some of the NS 4.16b collection of SYS3175 errors I've noticed
something. Im at Warp 4 FP8 in a 64MB box. As well, I'd installed Internet
Junk Buster. My latest collection of SYS3175 errors appears to involve IJB,
wherein SWAPPER.DAT takes off on a wild rampage. I've configured the
system long ago for COMIT and given it the 'magic' number over just over
16MB. Immediately on load of either IJB or NS 4.16b, it SWAPPER.DAT
stars growing. As have others, I've tried no cache, standard cache,
large cache, no help. During operations, SWAPPER.DAT just gets bigger
and bigger. I've seen it escallate to 105MB with just NS 4.16b and IJB,
but can't comment on what happens without IJB enabled just yet.

What does seem relevant is that as long as I leave IJB loaded, after
exiting NS 4.16b, SWAPPER.DAT never collapses.

Reloading NS 4.16b, on a left-in-place IJB, is one good way to whop it
up, nearly doubling in size with not necessarily every fresh load of NS
4.16b, but certainly many of them.

It is when this doubling, or maybe it isn't actually exponential growth,
but it smells like it, occurs, that the system collapses into SYS3175
errors.

The first such will produce a SYS3175 error from which you can recover.
It's the second one in a row, initiated in response to a reload after
that first one shows, which locks the entire box requiring the "You get
and F in the course!", salute.

On repeated runs of this, from the dirty flag set initialization CHKDSK,
which always seemed to show the IJB log file as an alloaction size
error, which prompted me to experiment.

Now .. You can always seem to get a rollback in SWAPPER.DAT size,
provided you will UNLOAD the IJB utility, after each exit from NS 4.16b.
Again, we're not talking about where NS 4.16b goes as to SWAPPER.DAT
growth during a single load, just for repeated loads.

This whomp up in SWAPPER.DAT also applies to when you get bombed with a
URL which opens a second or third instance of NS 4.16b for one of these
cutesy "Sell me the World for Ten Cents." ad campaign deals too! This
seems to be another way for SWAPPER.DAT to grow and grow, and never
collapse, at least while IJB is running.

I run NS 5.16b out of a .CMD file which allows me to sycronize the
system to NISTIME with each pull-up of NS 4.16b. Also, on command, I
can examine the COOKIE's file if I want to, if it exists for one reason
or another, but, IJB is limiting that per it's configuration.

Now ..

What I want to do is try to load ... and UNLOAD ... IJB in that same
.CMD file. That way I can experiment to find out if I can always assure
a graceful degradtion of the SWAPPER.DAT to cure this one glitch I think
I have found.

Problem ..

I can OPEN the IJB creature in the .CMD file. However, when I do, it
grabs the thread and locks it to that thread and won't return me to the
.CMD file for the rest of the load ...

How can I use a REXX procedure or function to force the .CMD file to
return me to the thread of the .CMD file after IJB loads?

That said, I smell more trouble coming. After I exit ND 4.16b in this
scenario from a .CMD file, how do I then gain re-entry to the IJB thread
to KILL it from that same .CMD file.

Curious mind isn't well enough informed about threading, REXX and .CMD
to know how to do this.

Any help here so I can finish the research and post what I have, maybe,
confirmed?

Subj: How to crash your system with a Video-CD !!

From: Wim Wauters <reply_to_the_newsgroup@please.com>

Hello all,

I think I just found a new feature of BugPack12 (grumble).

Whenever I have this videoCD in a CD-ROM reader, OS/2 will
crash whenever a program tries to get the CD-ROM's status.

More details:
1) VideoCD works fine in Win98 or WinNT (damned!).

2) OS/2 4.0 client crashes with a TrapD (Black Screen of
Death)

3) "to get CD-ROM's status": whenever a program determines
whether there is an accessible CD in the drive (the program
can be anything from OS/2 command prompt to AudioCDplayer)

4) the above crash can be reliably re-created using any of
the following:

System 1: Intel chipset, Pentium100
IDE CD-ROM drive, IBM IDE driver (IBMs506.ADD)

System 2: Ali V chipset, AMD K-6 400
IDE CD-ROM drive, Daniela's driver (Danis506.ADD)
SCSI CD-ROM Drive (Plextor 32 running on Iwill 2930U)

5) For the uninitiated: a videoCD is a CD-ROM containing
some 'junk' files and of course the movie (which is 'hidden'
in x:\mpeg\music.dat or something like that)

As far as I can tell now, the CDFS.IFS must be the culprit
(more in particular the /W switch). Will try to disable this
option later, when I have my third system back (system 1 is
normally not used in a productive way).

The one who thought his systems were stable,
Wim.

Hi Wim:

Just out of curiosity: does this just happen on a specific VideoCD, or
does it happen with different VideoCD's?

Subj: Trap D using CSF0141

From: JHB@jita.nospam.demon.co.uk (Jim Backus)

I'm trying to apply the latest general relaease fixpack for Warp 3 -
xruw040. Couldn't find the method of doing this from the hard disk so
created a set of floppies.

I boot to a command line using Alt F1 and then run A:\Service to start
the CSF tool (version 1.41)

There is activity on the floppy drive, then the screen clears and a
few seconds later the PC stops with a trap 000d

The trap screen reads:

Exception in device driver: SINGLEQ$
TRAP 000d ERRCD=0000 ERACC=**** ERLIM=********

The systems detected an internal processing error at
location ##0168:fff4b06e - 000e:c06e
60000, 9084

038600d1
Internal revision 8.259_uni, 98/01/07

The system is stopped. Record all of the above information and
contact your service representative.

The PC is a 386DX40 which has been running very reliably as a file and
print server.

Is there any history of problems with CSF 0141?

Would I be better booting from floppies?

What is the method of installing a fix pack from the hard drive. I'm
aware of a tool called Fastkick which is derived from the CSF tool but
the version I have is older than 1.41.

TIA for any advice

First bit of advice.

The SERVICE.EXE program is meant to run from your
regular desktop, not from command prompt boot.

The service program requires PM which will only be
present if you boot to your reguar desktop.

If you boot from floppies you have to run the FSERVICE.EXE
program which uses a response file to determine
what system to service. This response file is documented
in the readme file for the CSF 141 fix tool.

To install a fixpack from the hard drive, you have to
expand the fixpack diskette images to a directory
on your hard drive. There is a tool called DSKXTRCT.EXE
you can obtain it from http://hobbes.nmsu.edu

Once you have the images expanded, open an OS/2
Window and enter the
SET CSFCDROMDIR=X:\where_ever_the_fix_is_directory
command to set the location of the fix pack files. Then
run the SERVICE.EXE program.

The usage of the CSFCDROMDIR variable is
explained in the fix tool readme file.

Subj: Re: pmmerge and WPS crashes

From: pNoOrStPiAgM@attglobal.net (Harald Portig)

For the past couple of months, since 9/28/99, I have been experiencing
the same thing, i.e., trying to start Netscape causes the WPS to
freeze. I don't think that it has to do with the number of days the
system has been up since it has happened in as few as four days and as
many as nine. I have tried both mentioned PMMERGE.DLLs, and that does
not seem to have affected it. Running FP12, Comm/2 4.61. I don't
think this happened with version 4.04.

When WPS locks, Ctrl-Esc produces the dialog about WarpCenter not
responding, but the option to kill it then does'nt work. I can FTP
into the hung machine from another machine and exchange files; however
TELNET into the hung machine does not work. CAD is the only recourse.

The associated dumps in POPUPLOG.OS2 are not always the same. They
are reproduced at the end of this message.

At other times there have been problems in that Comm/2 won't start
when the Organizer from SmartSuite 1.1 is loaded. Closing Organizer
allows Comm/2 to start. Once this happens it is a matter of only a
few hours or a day before things get so flaky that a reboot is
necessary. This behavior was more prevalent with 4.04 than 4.61. It
may just be different because I don't have Organizer loaded at all
times, the way I used to.

PLEASE report this to IBM! About 8 months ago I did and was told that
since *no one else has reported it*, it must be my system. Get

ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/ps/defect_submission/problem.txt

fill it out (be complete!) send it in, and don't take any crap about 'no one
else has reported it'!

BTW, *any* chkdsk.* file will cause trouble, as well as folders named FOUNDx.

I have had lockups occur with Object Navigator, FM/2, and the OS/2 Drives
objects.

Hmmm. I've just checked my system and found everything OK.
I tried a Video CD 2.0 disk, though. There should be some difference to
regular Video CD,
I guess, 'cause I can't play it and never could with OS/2, may be this
explains my results.

My system is @FixPak 12, Intel chipset, Pentium Pro 200, IDE CD Toshiba,
DaniS506.add.
I don't use /W switch with CDFS.

Dave,
Good point, I have the form will fill it out. Can I ask if others who have HAD
or can demonstrate

Lorne,

Thanks for the advice - I have applied fixpacks previously but don't
do it very often - I'm a believer in the "if it ain't broke don't fix
it" philosophy but thought I'd better put in the necessary stuff for
y2k compliance.

Dave,
I'll send in my report as well, however to make matters even more strange, I
am seeing this
behaviour only on my laptop (Tpad 760XD) with Warp4+fp12 but NOT on my home
system (never ever saw
it at home) which is Warp4+fp9. Both machine have pretty much the same s/ware
including OD 2.0
+both fixkits.

I saved the article, (I just finished reading it again).

Unfortunately, I didn't grab the two files like I had intended. :(

At least now that it seems to be a known problem, maybe I can ride herd on

Unless somebody has the fixes that Scott posted, and they want to e-mail them

To be on the safe side, you should download Latest40.exe and a file
called ICI6063.exe

These are the latest fixes for TCPIP stack version 4.02

First, run inetver from an os/2 prompt. If you get a response of
version 4.02e, you have the un-upgraded stack.

In such a case, install ICI6063 then Latest40, the order is important,
after which inetver should show 4.02w.

ICI6063 brings you up to date for application of latest40.exe.

I generally do a manual install, so my view is it doesn't hurt to
apply ICI6063 first anyway, even if you think it is already on, as you
will simply be replacing existing files and any later files will be
found in latest40.exe.

Here is the url for the stack update page.

ftp://ps.software.ibm.com/ps/products/tcpip/rsu/stack/latestv4.html

That page talks about version 4.02t, but the actual fix produces
version 4.02w. It looks like they didn't upgrade the text in the url
when they upgraded the software.

Hi,

I'm trying to install OS/2 WARP V.3 in a IBM POS Shureone, with a Cyrix

When i insert the OS/2 disk 1 he gives me this message:

I read in the ibm suport page that this is suposed to be related with
"testcfg.sys". They said to exclude this line from my config.sys. And it
worked, the instalation process continues, but when OS/2 starts the
instalation program says that

"an error ocurred while opening the following file: TESTCFG.SYS

The system cannot open the device or file specified.
Do you wish to retry the operation ?"

So, at this point i can't continue becouse the os/2 stops here. I think
it's becouse the install.exe in this location C:\os2\install , is trying
to load the testcfg.sys. So my os/2 instalation isn't finished and i
don't know what to to !!!

What is testcfg.sys ????

Can someone explain me what to do to instal Os/2 in this case.

Thanks

Subj: Version 4.0 Stack fixes

From: Ron Vopicka <cvopicka@erols.com>

I have dug myself into a small hole.

I have been trying to finish some warp 4 updates before the Y2K tolls
(and even assure myself that I haven't improved it to the extent that it
no longer works).

I've updated the stack software, installing WR08423 and 8424. Before I
started I backed up the likely directories, and after that the update
went fine.

Last night I decided to visually scan the dates/modules in the saved
directories vs. the new ones... and found a few "newer" modules had been
(kindly) regressed. (afinet, afos2, ifndis, inetcfg, inetdbg, ipformat,
route, sockets, tcpipdll, and tcptime - the newer modules are 12/98 and
the older/new modules are 8/98). This was courtesy of 8423... 8424 uses
fixt and lets you know when mayhem may be being created.

After much tracking and cursing my poor memory (I have now created a
written log of my activities), I tracked this back to a directory on my
fix disk entitled "stak402w" (I don't know if the name is signifcant).
At any rate I cannot find what must have been the original zip or
xip/exe file where it came from, can't find any read.me or any other
clue about where it came from.

I apparently did this superior system maintence back about 4/99.

The first question is, does anyone know where this came from and...
shudder... could I have inadvertently (carelessly) installed some 4.1
stuff on top of the 4.0 stack?

Needless to say, I am wondering if I should reinstall the "STAK402W".

Ron the clueless

You wrote it that way so many times, you must really
think that's the release number. It's not. It's
4.61. Unless you really do have some other version
of Communicator. To be precise it's:

Version 4.61 [en] 990915

You really need to spend the time to read the REXX
online manual that comes with your system. It sounds
like perhaps the START command might help you,
documented in the OS/2 Command Reference online
manual that comes with your system. As for killing
tasks from command scripts, I found this teeny little
thing called KILLEM on Hobbes a long time ago.

Subj: Warp Server for e-business weirdness

From: "Bryan L. Price" <bytehead@infinet.com>

I have just moved people's home directories from a LAN Server 4.0 server
to a WSeb server. Running DOS programs (Word Perfect 6, WinOS File
Manager) and accessing their home directory, sometimes, they will not get
all of their files listed. OS/2 programs work flawlessly. Just by
opening up a DOS window and doing a DIR, I can see this happen on my
workstation. What is really strange is that when I'm short, I always stop
at the same place. A "full" directory listing shows 78 files. When it is
short, it only shows 10. And it shows 10 everytime it is short.

This is, or course, freaking out the users, who now think the network is
eating their files.

The home directories were on an 386 HPFS partition. They now reside on a
JFS partition. Old server was a PC Server 350 using a LAN Streamer Token
Ring card, while the new server is a Netfinity 5500 with a PCI Token Ring
card.

Anybody else seeing this happen, or able to offer any words of wisdom?
Maybe report this to IBM?

I think this is related to a kernel bug that's already fixed. i put out some
fix kernels a while ago; I don't know if anyone saved them.

The README:
READ.ME for LATEST40.EXE

Description:
------------

This package provides replacement modules for the V4.0 tcp/ip
stack and DLL's.

Prerequisites:
-------------

You must have one of the following installed on your system:
  - TCP/IP V4.0 and MPTS from OS/2 Warp Version 4, component id
5639B1700,
    R510.
  - Warp Connect or Warp Server with either or both of the following:
       - the MPTS from Comm Server
       - the MPTS from Warp Server SMP client (NOT Warp Server SMP
server)
       - MPTS FixPak WRx8421 (superceded WRx8415)

You must also have one of the following installed:
  - MPTS FixPak WRx8421
  - The fix for IC16063

Pre-Installation Instruction:
----------------------------

The following must be done one time only to avoid tcp/ip problems:
If the file c:\tcpip\archive\dll\tcpipdll.dll exists, please erase it.
(Substitute the drive letter on which \TCPIP\ is installed for "c:")
This is a downlevel DLL which may replace the current DLL.

Installation instructions:
--------------------------

1. You should create a temporary directory and decompress (unzip)
LATEST40.EXE
   into it. Enter the following:
      LATEST40 .
   No subdirectories are created.

2. Since some of the files are locked by the system (the DLL's), to
replace
them you must now perform a shutdown of your OS/2 system.
The directions below will walk you thru the procedure for replacing
   these files.

3. Reboot your system.

4. As soon as your system begins to boot, and you see the OS2 with a
small
white block in the upper left corner of your screen, depress the
ALT key and
the F1 key at the same time (ALT-F1).

5. The Recovery Choices screen should be displayed. Press F2 to
   get a command prompt.

6. Your system will now continue to boot, and should complete with an
[X:\]
prompt, where "X" is your boot drive.

7. Change to the drive and temporary directory in which you unzipped
the
   LATEST40.EXE file.

8. The files listed in this directory should replace ANY EXISTING
FILES of
the same name currently on your system. DO NOT create a
subdirectory for
these files and simply place it in your PATH in CONFIG.SYS. If you
do,
it will create multiple copies of DLL'S, and EXE's etc, which could
cause
   erratic behavior of your system.

9. Place the files in directories as listed in the "Contents" section
below.
Note that "y:" is the drive on which MPTN was installed, and "x:"
is
the drive on which TCP/IP was installed (x: and y: are usually the
same).

10. Reboot your system. You can use Ctrl-Alt-Del.

11. Your system should now start normally and all file changes will be
in
    effect.

12. When your system has completed startup, you can verify that the
new
TCP/IP stack is running by issuing the following command from an
OS/2
    command prompt:
       INETVER
    The following should be displayed:
       Inet Version: 4.02w

Further to the above, here is the anonymous ftp site

ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/ps/products/tcpip/fixes/v4.0os2/latest/s
tack/

download all the files in this directory by anonymous ftp binary
download and you will have the means to bring your tcpip stack up to
date.
This update is absolutely necessary if you intend to use a cable
modem.

Hi everyone,

I'm having a problem in Communicator loading any of the plugins (of the
Plugin Pack that is). A page will come up like normal, then I get the error
"Could not load the plug-in 'OS/2 Multimedia Audio PlugIns' for the MIME type
'audio/wav'. Make sure enough memory is available and that the plug-in is
installed correctly" and it does this for mpgs and midi files and whatever
else... Anyone know what's goin' on? I don't THINK I changed anything......
I have tried reinstalling the plug-in pack since it weirded out like this, but
that didn't change anything.

A couple of .dll files in the plugin pack were a problem for some
people. They needed to be back-leveled to those from the Netscape
2.02 pack. I had this problem and that fixed it. Unfortunately I
can't remember what the files were

IF it's a problem in FP11 already, I would've thought FP12
would've fixed our problem.
HENCE, it must be the DriverPack1 (which is the same for 11
and 12).
I know DriverPack2 is being worked on (wow, ain't I smart
!!), so I only need to find out if it's on the APAR list.

> I use the W switch myself, I have never tried without.
Yep, still on the agenda here too.

Do you have any idea what makes these 'certain' VCDs so
special ?
Are they just a new standard, or is it some filename/file
structure that OS/2 trips over?
(This is to get an idea of how wide-spread the problem is).

Tara !

Has anybody had any experiences using the Y2KCLOCK.EXE to replace the
clocksys files for warp/warpconnect v3. This is recommended by IBM because
of possible Y2K dual boot or DosGetTimeDate problems. After performing this
we have seen dates jump 1-2 days in advance around the month end. One
particular BIOS was noted as having this fault by one of my colleagues (1

I've got a testcase version of OS2KRNL that's dated Nov 3 1999,
822,919 bytes. It gives BLDLEVEL though as 14.039F, the same level as
WSeB's GA release. I don't see that it corrects anything, but if it's
the one referred to you're welcome to it.

There is another recent update for WSeb kernel, bldlevel 14.040F_UNI (only
uniprocessor version) available at testcase. It is also available on my
ftp:

ftp://protein.bio.msu.su/pub/os2/fixes/wseb/07804250.zip

Running it for 2 days, very stable and with much improved multitasking.

You will also find the rest of unofficial WSeb fixes (testcase) released
up to date at the same location.

Cheers,
Ivan

WR08423 + WR08424 (in that sequence, since WR08424 is not cumulative). Use
latest Fix Tool 1.41 for applying WR08424 instead of v.1.39 included with
it. WR08423 is applied by running MPTS.EXE, see readme.txt included.

OK, OK, so I got off my lazy butte and see "readme.1st" sez:

"If you HAVE NOT yet installed IC16063.EXE on your Warp V4 system, then
do the following:

You should create a temporary directory, copy LATEST40.EXE and IC16063.EXE
into the directory, and unzip the files by entering the following, in
   sequence:

      IC16063 .
      LATEST40 .

Note that the order of issuing the IC16063 and LATEST40 commands is
important! By issuing LATEST40 after IC16063, the more recent stack files
in LATEST40.EXE will replace the older files in IC16063.EXE.

Note that the '.' is important because it will unzip all the files into the
current path. No subdirectories are created.

Once this is done, see INSTALL.DOC for installation directions. READ.ME
(unzipped from LATEST40.EXE) contains installation instructions and
   updated stack information for LATEST40.EXE."

So, unless somebody hollers, "Oh, no! That'll kill ya!", I think that's what
I'll do.

Subj: Warp for EBusiness - bad AT480AC.DSP ?

From: Stanislaw Kozlowski <skozlowski@my-deja.com>

While browsing Warp for EBusiness downloaded and unzipped from
Developer Connection I have noticed that in
ASCII file OS2IMAGE\DISP_1\AT480AC.DSP there are some
unprintable characters. IBM support confirmed that
it is not an error but could not explain why is this so.
When installing some display drivers when this file is accessed
installation program complaints that file is invalid.
Anyone can check on his CD that the file is correct ?

Scott's warning is underlined by me, and you should always be
well-versed in Self-Rescue skills before plugging in wild system
files. Don't come crawling here for help when you can't get back into
your system, or a crash has actually destroyed files, because you
wanted to play with testcase builds.

Better yet, just don't do it at all?

(Although there have been periods in Warp development when *any* new
file seemed to offer more hope than those that had been officially
released. And I won't make any jokes about "deliberately broken",
either. It is a serious warning he's making.)

Beat me, beat me, beat me with your alpha stick.

However, I see JFS fixes for FTP at:

	ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com:/ps/products/os2/fixes/v4.5warp/jfsfix1
.zip

dated Aug 31. I haven't yet looked for anything at "the website", but
could we request that the FTP site be kept current with releases (not
alphas or betas) published on the website? My FTP clients present far
fewer problems downloading intact files than web browsers do.

All the WR084xx stuff is backlevel. There is newer
maintenance, which is now actually pretty old. But
it's newer than the stuff y'all have been talking
about. FTP to service.boulder.ibm.com. Drill down
to /ps/products/mpts/fixes/english-us/wr08610_conv &
grab WR08610 & apply it. Requires creating diskettes
& executing MPTS.EXE off the first of them. Then
switch directories to
/ps/products/mpts/fixes/english-us/wr08620 & grab
WR08620. Requires creating diskettes & executing Fix
Tool 1.41 (the latest). Following that, THERE ARE NO
STACK UPDATES. This will bring you up to the current
TCP/IP 4.2 stack. WR08423/4 is NOT current.

[F:\]inetver
Version numbers of TCP/IP protocol drivers:
   SOCKETS.SYS: 6.2001
   AFOS2.SYS: 6.2000
   AFINET.SYS: 6.2002

I've been running this both dial-up and LAN with DHCP
& it works great. W4/FP12/DDFP1/Peer IP08412.

OK - I did this first, as much for practice as anything else, but it was a
manual install.
I have the 1.41 fixtool (used it for FP12).
I'll pick off 8610 & 20 and look at what they do. My questions still exist in
the "x"
position of 4.x?, since I am still at 4.0 (although now '2w' rather than the
'0e' of this

This advice I posted was about the _latest_ level of TCP/IP 4.0x. WR08610
actually upgrades TCP/IP to 4.1 level, while WR8620 is for TCP/IP 4.20.

I can only warn you that _some_ (well, enough) people had severe problems
with WR08610/8620. I personally still running my production server on
WR08424 level. I tried upgrading to TCP/IP 4.20 (WR08620) and it was a
complete disaster, curable only by restoring my system from backup. Once
again, YMMV, but you are warned.

In my experience, WR08610/8620 was a rush alpha release, buggy and with
broken install. On the other side, TCP/IP 4.21 (WSeb level) is pretty
stable, at least with a couple of late breaking fixes applied on top of
it. I hope IBM will update freely available TCP/IP stack to 4.21 level
soon. Until then, I cannot recommend migrating your production system to
above TCP/IP 4.01w (which is in WR08424).

Cheers,
Ivan

hi,

i'd tried to install db/2 6.1 on warpserver for ebusiness and the
installer found only netbios and not tcp/ip.

this is very funny, because this is a gatewayserver/firewall into the
internet and no other application there has problems with tcp/ip.

but this may be something with the firewall: lan0 is a realtek-nic
and bound to the extranet and injoy firewall/gateway software. lan1
is an dec/intel-nic and bound to the intranet.

maybe the installer has problems to see lan0 - any idea to bind the
installe on lan1 during install ?

There is a new one. Look at:

http://duanec.indelible-blue.com/fixes/LatestWarp4.html

near the bottom is a link to UN_980, which is the latest TCP/IP
update. (that page has good links to most of the updates for OS/2). be
sure to READ the docs...

Hope this helps...

There was a large discussion about this, about a year ago (I think).
Check at DEJANEWS to see if you can find more information.

I think the "fix" was to go back to an earlier clock driver (or,
perhaps a later one). It seems to me that you may have got the "bad"
clock driver.

Hope this helps...

From a note in the WRx8620 read.me (probably by Lou hisself).

Ron

Note: 1 - WRx8620 should not be installed on a non-SMP Warp Server
without
installing TCP/IP v4.1 prior to it. There have been
various
problems reported when using WRx8610 (or above) without
TCP/IP
v4.1. This FixPak also supports Warp Server SMP machines
with
               WRx8610 applied.

If you are at 4.02w, you are at the most current tcp/ip stack ynless
you purchase version 4.1 or 4.2 by purchasing a Software Choice
subscription.

IBM accidentally put a free 4.1 out earlier this year but quickly
withdrew it. I would not suggest applying it as you will not get
support and upgrades for it as you are not licenced to use it.

I am happily using 4.02w with a cable modem whereas 4.02e couldn't
handle it, so your 4.02w stack should work well for you unless you are
doing something arcane.

Use the FTP client that came with your Warp, go to the following
anonymous FTP site:

ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/ps/products/tcpip/fixes/v4.0os2/latest/

Download ic16063.exe, latest40.exe and the 2 readme files.
Follow the manual install insructions in the readme files to install
FIRST ic16063 THEN latest40. There is an overlap in the files so
latest40 must be the last one installled as it has the later version
of the overlapped files.

If you are using Warp 4, you don't need anything else to upgrade your
tcp/ip stack.

When you are finished copying all the files in the two upgrades, your
system will be at 4.02w. Verify this by running inetver from an os/2
prompt.

You are correct that you should apply IC16063 then Latest40. these
files are all you need to take you from the
version that is on your GA warp 4 cdrom to the present 4.02w level.
I just finished doing a complete low level format and re-install of
Warp 4, followed by fixpack12, followed by these two upgrades,
followed by Java 1.18 and Netscape 4.61. (I was making room for
Linux)
The system is running tickety-boo with including the tcp/ip stack and
my cable modem.

No surprise that IBM doesn't acknowledge that it's a problem. An
alternative to waiting for them to fire or promote whoever was
responsible, that appears to exempt my system from this problem, is to
put these lines in STARTUP.CMD:

@for %%a in ( c d e f g ) do @if exist %%a:\chkdsk.log del /f /y /z /s
%%a:\chkdsk.log 2> nul
@for %%a in ( c d e f g ) do @if exist %%a:\chkdsk.old del /f /y /z /s

Folks, the WR08610/WR08620 READMEs say in them that
they apply to WARP 4 Client. Non-server,
non-Ebusiness, non-Workspace-On-Demand, uniprocessor
client. I know Ivan said he had trouble with them.
There were others who posted that they also had
trouble. But I have one dial-up & one LAN system
running "tickety-boo" <:-)) with these 2 packages of
maintenance applied. Surely I'm not alone. They
update the 4.0 stack to 4.2. They update the 4.1
stack to 4.2. Yes, BOTH. Read the READMEs & you'll
see I speak the truth.

I note the pointer to some recent UN_980 app updates
that one poster mentioned earlier. According to the
README for that package, you can apply those updates
on top of WR08610 but you need to apply WR08620
AFTER. That sounds like there's some backleveling
going on in UN_980. Well, since I already have
WR08620 applied, and it came out about FIVE MONTHS!!!
before this UN_980 package, I think it's
UNCONSCIONABLE that there is this kind of collision.
Sounds like a whole lot of manual repair & evasive
maneuvers required to get it working right if you
already have WR08620 applied. I think I'll wait for
maintenance that moves forward in an orderly
progression & ignore this UN_980 package. I suppose
if you have neither WR08610 not WR08620 applied,
you'd be safe to apply UN_980 between the two.

As somebody else said earlier on this thread, YOUR
MILEAGE MAY VARY.

Somebody posted this URL a while ago:

http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Heights/9885/o
sapplet.html

(Sorry about the folded line. That's Deja News doing
that.)

If you go there, it tells you what Java version
you're running, among other things. So it's a good
test once you get it running. It's telling me I'm
running 1.1.8, which is what I was hoping it would
say.

It is my understanding that Communicator 4.61 finds
Java through one of the Preferences. Select
Preferences on the Edit dropdown menu. Select OS/2
Preferences, then press the OS/2 Java Properties
button. The first entry field on that page is for
Java Path. I have E:\JAVA11\DLL\JAVAI.DLL filled in
there. I never entered that; something filled that
in for me. E:\JAVA11 is indeed the base directory
into which I installed Java 1.1.8 (and before that
1.1.7 & 1,1.6 & 1.1.4 -- I don't remember 1.1.5; was
there a 1.1.5?).

Not knowing any better, I downloaded the 12Meg file
javaswng.zip from service.boulder.ibm.com. That
unzips to 40Meg, from which you can find a README.
The README says there's an INSTALL.EXE in the
package. I sure don't see it. And the README is a
bit vague about the changes to your system, including
CONFIG.SYS, that are required to implement Swing. It
implies that INSTALL.EXE will take care of it for you
& don't worry. I searched Deja News for Swing & all
I found was a damn flame war. Thanks a lot.

So. Before I send an E-mail to the address in the
README -- which for some reason is at Sun, not IBM --
does anyone here know what to do with javaswng.zip to
get Swing installed?

Hello,

I've copied my OS2 Warp FP26 to a new 16GB HD,
fist Partition = 200MB FAT, Second = 400MB FAT(OS2)
the remaining disk-space is not used(for testing).

If i install the newest Device-Drivers to support
HD>8GB i get following fault-message at booting(ALT-F2)
"Cannot find OS2DASD.DMD" but its in the \os2\boot directory.

If i install the device drivers from the original os2 warp connect
install disks, os2 is starting without any problems! But then i've
problems accessing large partitions, and my ide100-zip drive.

Thanks a lot

Yes, but unless you own TCPIP V4.1 you will have problem with this
route.

Stack update 8610 has serious problems for those upgrading from V4
without installing the full blown TCPIP V4.1 product first (look at
the readmes now available from IBM).

V4.2 is the same, big problems for those without the full TCPIP V4.1
or V4.2 (WSeB).

IBM has left V4 for dead, a reasonable thing I suppose seeing as how
V4.1 has been available for a while.

The way I see it, your only choice, if not wanting to pay for TCPIP
V4.1 is to go to fix 8424.

Cheers,
Craig

UN_0980, if I remember correctly is not a stack update, but rather a
TCPIP apps refresh. This is a different beast to the 'mpts' update
which is what 8610 and 8620 represents.

Its a mess which almost drove me to distraction. One day I just had
to sit down, say 'f&%k it!!' and download and read all the readme's
and other snippets and put together a small table of what is required
for what base levels and what interactions exist between them.

The result, for both Warp3 and Warp4 (Warp Server 4 as well) was that
8423 and 8424 (the update for 8423) are the last known to work fixes
if you do not own or want to buy the full TCPIP V4.1 product.

This would update you to the last known good 16 bit TCPIP stack.

It would seem, though I have not tested the theory, that the recently
made available UN_0980 fix is a refresh for the V4 TCPIP applications
which are a slightly overlapping but generally distinct part of the
tcpip subsystem (ie, not the stack).

As both 8610 and 8620 make an attempt to upgrade an existing TCPIP
V4.1 stack (without the applications) it makes some sense (I
guess...) that you would need to have V4.1 TCPIP full product
(including applications) to be successful. IBM suggests this in the
readme that now accompanies both updates and that has been posted to
this thread a couple of times already.

Much as V3.x tcpip is now a dead product, I think V4.0 is dead also.
Look to V4.2x as the current level. For those of us with Warp4 we
need to buy into V4.1 to have the current 32 bit stack and its fixes
available to us.

Quite honestly, if you don't care much about "keeping up with the
Jones's" then the TCPIP V4 product with MPTS stack refresh 8424 is
very stable and very fast too.

If, because of the business you do, you find that you really -need- a
BSD compliant 32 bit stack, the US$200 or so thats required for a
software choice subscription is quite a reasonable figure.

I would suggest that fix 8424 be avoided unless you have purchased the
4.1 stack.

Ic16063.exe and Latest40.exe will bring you to 4.02w which is the
current version of the 4.0 stack. anything beyond that should be a
purchased 4.1 and the purchased product installed or a purchased 4.2.
I am not an IBM employee or advocate, just suggesting that it is not
advisable to have an unsupported version as a critical part of your
system.

fix correctly. If he DID, please E-MAIL me the full details of the h/w.

Download the Java118 and the other files, including Swing from
Software Choice.
You will also have to get Feature Install v. 1.2.5, also from Software
Choice
Each file has an install.exe. The icon is a monitor face with a
turquoise screen and a yellow arrow.
Feature install is a java program and it requires Netscape to work.

Further to the above, you might also want to get the upgrades for
Java118, including Swing upgrades, from Hursley park, released
yesterday.

Is the feature Installer required to install Java118 also? I downloaded
a Java-runtime.exe from Hursley and want to know if I need this
to don the install.

Thanks.

You will need feature installer to install java v. 1.1.8
the Runtime at Hursley is a fix only, it must be installed into an
already installed Java 1.1.8

Use feature install to install the Java Toolkit and the other items,
including the swing, then go to Hursley to get the fixes.

If you need any help using Feature install, please post.

Not true. The READMEs contradict you. My experience
contradicts you. I NEVER had TCP/IP 4.1. I somehow
managed not to hear about the free giveaway until
after it was withdrawn. But I don't think I'd have
gotten it anyway since about the only thing I could
tell was different was that the configuration utility
was a Java app. Whoop dee doo. How often to you
configure your TCP/IP? Well, for me anyway, that's
about once every 3 or 4 years when somebody decides
to change their DNS IP address or something like
that. OK. Mileage varies. I never got 4.1. I
applied WR08610 & WR08620 on top of some stack
version. I may have been up to 4.02t, I think.

I have read them. You're wrong. That's not what
they say. Read them again. People may be having
problems. No, people HAVE REPORTED that they ARE
having problems. But I don't think absence of 4.1 is
the cause.

> V4.2 is the same, big problems for those without
the full TCPIP V4.1

Again, wrong. Contradicted by my 2 installs.
Although I can't speak to WARP 3, WARP Server, WSeB,
or WSOD. Plain WARP 4 uniprocessor Client is what
I'm running.

Again, no. I went from 4.02something at WR08423
directly to 4.2 at WR08610 & then added WR08620. (By
the way, WR08610 --> IS <-- TCP/IP 4.2.  That's also
in the READMEs.) This proves it can be done. I wish
somebody else would just post to say, "Me too." I
can't credit the notion that I am the only person on
the planet who's done it successfully. On 2 machines
with radically different hardware, not the least
difference being one is dial-up & the other is on a
LAN. Come on, folks, somebody, please speak up.....

You can probably save yourself some time and hassle by downloading the
following files from Software Choice (one or both, depending on your
needs):

	javainsr.exe	- Swing Runtime
	javainst.exe	- Swing Toolkit

The big ZPI file you downloaded contains all of the files in these two
arcihves, however it is *not* installable via any automated means. It's
more intended or those who need to package Swing for OS/2 with their
products, or who otherwise have special installation needs.

The two files mentioned above have everything you need to install them
via Feature Installer.

I'm saying that you are not interpreting the words
correctly. What it says is that if you have non-SMP
WARP Server, then you must first install TCP/IP 4.1
before WR08620. Since I have WARP 4 uniprocessor
Client, a different platform entirely, the warning
does not apply to me. Or you?

The README for WR08610 is even less restrictive.
That MPTS Refresh applies to ALL platforms except
Workspace On Demand Release 1. Release 2 evidently
contained WR08610 from the outset, according to the
README for WR08620.

As for UN_980, I posted that it looked like it's a
botched update since, according to the README, it
collides with WR08620, something that predates it by
FIVE MONTHS!!!!! I'm not applying it. The README
implies that if you install WR08610, UN_980, WR08620
in that order, you should be fine. But I already
have WR08620. My SYSLEVEL files will say, after
applying UN_980, that I still have WR08620 applied.
I won't be able to re-apply WR08620 after UN_980
without major manual intervention. Piss on that.

I just installed following the instructions. WR08610
was like the 6 or so previous MPTS Refreshes IBM
released before that. Then I installed WR08620 like
any Fix Pack over top of WR08610.

The warning is that some people saw endless problems
with WR08610. Ivan was one of the most vocal. I
remember the threads. You might want to chase them
down at Deja News. I vaguely recall posting on them,
although for the life of me I can't remember any
details now.

> IBM, are you listening, you say 8610 and 8620 are

above).

You may want to re-evaluate your position in light of
my explanation. Being safe is always good, but
avoiding these updates entirely may be overly
cautious.

Thank you for the kind words. In your case, on your
experimental boxes of course, since you'll be coming
from below WR08610, I would go ahead & throw in
UN_980. My only reservation about that is the
collision with WR08620, which I already have.
Applying UN_980 won't tell my SYSLEVEL files that
WR08620 can safely be reapplied. So it would be a
huge pain in the ass for me. But since you don't
have either WR08610 or WR08620 yet, you could do them
in sequence: WR08610, UN_980, WR08620. Do please
post results of your experiments once you've done
them.

I remember that problem. It would crash your whole

DAMN Deja News! Sorry about the folded lines.

I am currently dialed to my employer so this is a
pretty good test. I don't have the Peer Requester
running when I dial my ISP, but I do now. That's at
IP08412, which is its own can of worms, about which
I've posted numerous times. And which continues to
be a problem for me on my work system, but not here
at home.

Thanks for responding, Clive. But I'm already at
this:

And these cut/pasted from a SYSLEVEL command:

I've already moved to the latest Java, Communicator,

The javaswng.zip README says there's an INSTALL.EXE

with Java, Communicator, & Feature Installer. I know
how they work. I've run them. Where's the
INSTALL.EXE for javaswng.zip?

That is a known error that was corrected with FixPak 9, 2nd Release and
FixPak 39, IIRC.

For what it's worth, I have been using Swing 1.1.1 obtained directly from
Sun. Since Swing is pure Java, I'm not sure why there is a separate
IBM Swing. Installation just consists of having the swing.jar accessible.
For example, my Config.sys file contains the line:
      SET CLASSPATH=D:\java11\swing111\swing.jar;.;

That's likely all that's needed for the IBM version as well. Swing does
require Java 1.1.7 (maybe 1.1.8?), and you might also need the swingall.jar
file as well.

The following is from the OS/2 Warp-4 Documents .INF file
(I think it's good to keep a printed copy of this list
because it's inaccessible when these errors happen,
and it might prevent a major panick attack):

 "DESCRIPTION

 General List of OS/2 Traps

 RESOLUTION

TRAP 0000 - DIVIDE ERROR: A program attempted to divide a number
 by zero. Contact software support.

TRAP 0001 - DEBUG EXCEPTION: Contact software support.

TRAP 0002 - HARDWARE/MEMORY ERROR: Memory or hardware failure in
 the system. Contact hardware support.

TRAP 0003 - BREAKPOINT: This is a special instruction (INT 3)
used in "debugging" software, which was left in the code either
accidentally or by design. Contact software support.

TRAP 0004 - OVERFLOW: An overflow occurred during an arithmetic
 operation. Contact software support.

TRAP 0005 - BOUND RANGE EXCEEDED: A Bound instruction exceeded
the specified limits. Contact software support.

TRAP 0006 - INVALID OPCODE: The processor tried to execute an
unreserved invalid opcode. Contact software support.

TRAP 0007 - COPROCESSOR NOT AVAILABLE: If coprocessor diagnostic
tests run error-free, contact software support.

TRAP 0008 - DOUBLE FAULT: The processor detected an exception
while processing another exception. It could be caused by either
hardware or software. If TRAP 0002 also is being experienced,
 contact hardware support.

TRAP 0009 - COPROCESSOR OVERRUN: The middle portion of a
COPROCESSOR operand is protected or not present. Contact
 software support.

TRAP 000A - INVALID TASK STATE SEGMENT: A task switch to an
invalid task-switch segment was attempted. Contact software
 support.

TRAP 000B - SEGMENT NOT PRESENT: The referenced segment is not

TRAP 000C - STACK FAULT: The referenced page is not present in
memory, or the procedure referencing the page does not have
enough privilege to access the page. Contact software support.

TRAP 000D - GENERAL PROTECTION EXCEPTION: All protection
violations that do not cause another exception cause a
 TRAP 000D. Contact software support.

TRAP 000E - PAGE FAULT: The referenced page is not present in
memory, or the procedure referencing the page does not have
enough privilege to access the page. Contact software support.

TRAP 000F - RESERVED BY INTEL.

TRAP 0010 - COPROCESSOR ERROR: The processor detected an error
from the coprocessor. This could be caused by hardware or

Your CPU seems to dislike what OS/2 is asking her to do. But
it could be overcome by tweaking OS/2 install parameters.
000D seems to be related to memory segmentation, or to memory
paging problems the CPU is having.

TESTCFG.SYS is a device driver; I'm __guessing__ it tests
your system devices configuration (CPU, controllers, memory).
The install process uses this driver, and I think OS/2 uses
it when loading other device drivers at boot time also.

At some point, the installation will create a CONFIG.SYS on the
root (\) directory of the boot drive: I would NOT EXCLUDE
the "testcfg.sys" line from this file.

OK, I'll 'fess up. I did it as soon as WR8610 came
out. I put it on my Warp 4 system that was running
the GA of Warp 4 TCP/IP and it worked perfectly.

When I re-install Warp 4 on my test machine (fairly
often as I regularly destroy the setup doing beta
testing, alpha testing and development I always
go back to WR8610. I have used it for both dial-up
and LAN connections (through Cisco routers, and
Cable modems).

I've never had a problem with it (WR8610 installed
over the Warp 4 GA TCP/IP) myself.

Someone else quoted the README that WR8610
should not be installed on a non-SMP Warp
Server system without TCP/IP 4.1, This is
NOT Warp 4 client (and it does cause problems
AFAIR, some kind of wierd Traps (D) in the
stack)
