I've never found a website that actually uses it, so I don't know if

It works just fine, unlike RealPlayer 16-bit version which is obsolete. The
new "RealPlayer" sites require the newer player which isn't available in any
compatible way for OS/2.

I just want to make sure that the installation of the hardware is
right.

This is what I done.

- First, installed OS/ 2 SCSIsupport - selective install
- Apply the latest fixpack (10)
- Apply the latest device driver fixpack.

At boot time I can see on the screen
	Adaptec AIC-7850 BIOS v1.14

	SCSI ID #6	Scanner 636EL

So I think the hardware installation is OK.

The scsi host adapter I got with the scanner is the AVA-2902E/I. But
neither ddpack online or adaptec own the driver for this scsi card. So
I choose the driver selected by the selective install program Adaptec
AIC-7850.

RMVIEW /IRQ IRQ Level = 9 PCI Pin = NONE Flg = SHARED
AIC7870_0 Adaptec AIC7870

It seem that nothing else use IRQ 9.

Why CFM Twain and PMsane can't see the scanner? Any help will be
apreciated.

Thanks

I have burned a disk under WinNT.

What software can I use to see if the drive is alright?

Subj: WinTVPCI and Matrox G400 with SDD

From: hamaoka@highway.ne.jp (Jun Hamaoka)

Summary:
Video quality is excellent. But some more works needed.

I recently bought Matrox G400 single head and installed
it on my machine, running Celeron 300, 64MB ram, SBAWE64,
WinTV/PCI card with Bt 878 chip, Warp 4 (Japanese)
with Fixpack5, Wincast 1.041w, SDD video.

I uninstalled Scitech Display Driver ver 0.9 and reverted to VGA.

Then installed GENGRADD 0.80 from IBM,
issuing command "a:\setup gdd."

Installed SDD ver 11, by clicking .exe installer.

Nothing happened until I found that a guy by the name of "nobody" complained
at Scitech newsgroup that he had to go to x:\sdd\disk
and run "setup sdd" to finish installation. I followed suit.

Then I added ",VCAFILT" to the line "SET C1=SDDGRADD"
of my config.sys.

Reboot....Viola!
Beautiful TV screen of 640x480 with 1 to 2 percent of CPU usage.
Much better than what I had with G400 and DIVE, or S3 and DIVE.
(The CPU usage monitored by PUmon used to be 90 percent for 640x, 45 percent
for 320x when I was using DIVE for these Video cards.)

WTV, an attatchment to wcast driver does not make use of GRADD.
It can produce video images. But its quality is far poor.

StWTV and YADTV make things done.
But using both applications, I see TV screen displaced below
(lower right of )the program window.
If I place the application window at the upper left corner of the screen,
TV image can be seen in the center of the monitor, while the application
window remains blacked out.

Using StWTV, if I minimize the blank application window, TVscreen also cease
to work.

In YADTV, TV-screen continue to work even after the original blank frame was
minimized.

But, redraw often fails and garbage of screen images remain.

I hope more tuning continue since quality of O/2 TV screen is
already quite excellent, beatiful and promising.

I've had exactly the same problem with my Yamaha CRW6416S on Adaptec 2940.
I connected Yamaha as the only device on the internal SCSI bus, and the
external bus of Adaptec
already carried Jaz and UMAX Astra scanner.

Yamaha worked fine under Win98, but had numerous hangs etc. under OS/2.
CDRECORD -inq
displayed the output you've got.

My Adaptec's BIOS had a termination mode set to automatic. After having tried
almost everything, I decided
to set manual termination mode, DISABLED in my case, and it started to work
immediately and unconditionally.

I don't know what Windows does to Adaptec to make it work than OS/2 doesn't.
Obviously, automatic
termination mode was buggy.

You may wish to check your SCSI adapter for automatic termination mode first.

HTH,
Nick Saxon

Nope - it uses the Crystal PCI driver. I have had partial luck with

system sound upon shutdown cuts out.

Anyone remember how to delete one set of sound card drivers -- prior to

Surely there's an easy way to replace one set of drivers with a new

You can edit the MMPM2.INI file and remove the references
to the sound card drivers. After you re-boot you can "usually"
install the new sound card drivers without any problems.
The file lives in \MMOS2

This is my MMPM2.INI file and I have marked the
places that I would chop out to allow installing a
new sound card.

If it doesn't work, you can always remove MMOS2
support, delete the \MMOS2 directory tree and
re-install MMOS2

From: rjerant@no_spam,austin.rr.com (Rich Jerant)

The easiest thing to do is :
Boot to an OS/2 full screen (via the recovery chioces menu).
Edit the config.sys and remove the references to old driver.
Edit the \mmos2\mmpm2.ini and in the [Drivers] section delete the
lines that start with "Waveaudio=", "Sequencer=", and "Ampmix=".
Power off and remove the old card
Install the new card
Power back on
Make sure you boot once with full hardware detection active. (see the
hardware manager properties)
install the new drivers.
you should be good to go.

Just out of interest, is the audio system the only thing lacking OS/2
support on this machine? IBM does mention there's no OS/2 support for
the ThinkPad 570 (and the 240). How about video and PCMCIA?

just wondering.

If I wanted add multi-media features in, should I have any problems
installing it in warp 3?

Reason I ask is that I tried to install the multi-media features thru
selective install. Looked like nothing got installed. went thru the disks
within a few seconds without producing any results.

I did try the full install with everything checked off, all installed except
for the multi-media features.....

At the suggestion of a member of the OS/2 support team in
Austin, I loaded the NeoMagic video drivers and the PCMCIA
support for another model of TP (the 660, maybe??). Although
there is no official support from IBM on this model, this
setup appears to work just fine.

Highly interesting. If you follow the link on the TP570, you learn
that there are drivers for video, sound and and modem; OTOH they say
that PCMCIA and IR might not work. But another poster (Daniel Jones)
just mentioned PCMCIA works. So it would appear the 570 is a rather
OS/2 compatible machine, despite what IBM says.

But weren't you the one having problems with sound? IB seems to imply
sound works OK on the 570's they're selling.

I think the PCMCIA support is pretty much unified for most ThinkPads
nowadays. I don't think the files you took were for the 660, since
AFAIK that model doesn't exist (yet?). Maybe this was from the 600?

Have you got any hopes of solving the sound problem? Indelible Blue
seems to imply they have been able to add sound support under OS/2 on
the 570's they're selling.

The 570 was high on the list for my next ThinkPad, but I've been put
off so far by the lack of OS/2 support.

I'm still figuring out what I have to do. My wife went out and bought
the TP without me knowing anything so now I'm the one responsible for
turning it into a usable machine :^) She bought it in Taiwan and the os
(Win98) is in Chinese as is the manual etc, etc. My Chinese is pretty
good, but not THAT good. A change of os and language is definitely
called for!

Anyway, good luck with your installation and keep us posted about your
success!

You may want to inform Dr. Martinus about your experience, so that he
can add a page for the TP570 to his Notebook/2 site
(http://www.os2ss.com/users/DrMartinus/notebook.htm).

Cheers, Dominique

TV is becoming quite watchable now, unfortunately I have to agree there
are kinks to be ironed out yet.

On my system (SDD b11 with VCAFILT, MGA G200, fp9)...

 - using StWTV, half the time the picture is missing except for a couple
of flickering lines at the top of the window... unless I open one of
the menus, in which case the TV picture appears for as long as the menu
   is open.

The other half of the time, it causes my system to Trap D as soon as I
   start StWTV.

 - Using YADTV/2, it works but I have to be very careful about the order I
start things up in. The control window always starts up with "Digital
Video 2" selected, and Connector blank. If I unthinkingly turn TV On
before changing these (very easy to do), then try to turn it off again
and change the device, YADTV immediately hangs in an "exit" state, and
only rebooting will get rid of it.

On the less common occasions when it does not do this, TV simply stops
working at all, until the next time I reboot - no matter what I do with
   the settings.

"Presets", unfortunately, does not seem to save the digital video
device or connector settings. So I have to remember to change them
properly each time I start YADTV.

I also get SYS3175s fairly frequently, usually if I absent-mindedly
close the TV window using the frame control, then try to quit.

I also wish there was some way to get full-screen TV picture (other than
running permanently on 640x480) - if SDD ever implements on-the-fly
resolution changing I suppose this could be done...

BUT if I'm careful, I can watch TV in a window quite nicely, thanks to the
hard work of all these people.

Subj: SB AWE 32 Volume Levels

From: dboultr@spamfree.erols.com

I'm using as my sound card a SB AWE 32. Yeah, I know, but it works
fine, with one exception.

When I play a CD, the volume is fairly soft. If I open a .WAV file
with, for example, the digital audio icon, the volume increases by
about 50%. As a result, before I start listening to CDs, I go thru
the open a .wav file drill.

It's either the hardware or the drivers. I briefly substituted a
AOpen AW 320 card, and there was no sign of this behavior.

Anyone have any ideas on where to start troubleshooting this?

Subj: Real Player 5.0 for Win-OS/2

From: reedjd@bitsmart.com

I'm having problems getting RealPlayer 5.0 to work in Win-OS2.

I installed my SB16 PnP drivers and tested it with some .WAV files.
Then I installed the Win32 1.25s.
Then I installed Microsoft Video for Windows.
Finally, in went Real Player 5.0

Now, when I play a video. The video runs just fine, but the audio
sounds like someone hitting an empty tin can about twice a second
(clank clank clank clank...).

I tried uninstalling/reinstalling SB16 and RealPlayer without success.
Suggestions?

In the multimedia folder (mine is in the Desktop/Programs
folder, but I might have moved it there) the Digital Audio
program allows you to record through your microphone. It's
a little haywire here (maybe as a result of FP 12): it
starts off the screen, and the file/open and file/new
dialogs act strangely. In the first case, I highlight it in
the Window List and select Cascade off the second mouse
button popup; then I proceed with "new file" and it usually
works after an error beep -- once you get it running it goes
just fine.

Yes, but which chipset? I've checked the website at:

Another possibility for testing is the Voicetype enrollment manager.
Enroll a few phrases and it will tell you pretty well how the mic is
working and also give you a nice graphical output.

I'd like to know. It happens with mine too! Quite annoying...but otherwise
the card still works fine.

I've been through several clean re-installs (not because of this), so I
think it's something inherent with the SB32 and the drivers...
(BTW, did you add the AWE control panel? Maybe that screws it up).

The real key here is: what model of sound card do you have?
You will want to make sure there are good OS/2 drivers for it,
& install a recent Warp 3 fixpack to get updated MM support.

This is simply not true. The only FP related problems were with some
ISA devices. The drivers for the PCI devices never had any FP related
problems, and in fact work well. The only real complaint is the lack
of DOS and WIN-OS/2 support.

I agree. The ISA problems were a single defect that was fixed quickly. The
PCI devices have
not had any problems. I have been very happy with my ESS cards (both ISA on
the machine where I need winos2 support and PCI on another machine) and also
with the level of tech support from ESS (i.e. with RJ). I have been VERY
unhappy with the support for the os/2 drivers on the Aureal Vortex chip.

The ususal problem with Aureal 8820-based cards is drivers installed
from a previous card that have not been completely removed. Did you
have a previous card installed?

OK, I was only commenting about the FP level problems
because I have seen a number of posts relating
Trap problems when an ESS driver loaded after
applying FP 10,11,12 (I think). If they are only related
to ISA drivers, I stand corrected. I was not sure if the
problems involved PCI cards or not, and I thought it
be best to mention that some problems had been
encountered, and there were fixed drivers available.

I do not understand this. I have a ESS1879 built into my notebook. Since
FP11
(I skipped FP10) I have not been able to use the sound. You seem to indicate

Ok,

I said back in August I wasn't giving up on this sound problem. A
person named Marcus Sterling told me that the C-Media CMI8338 uses the
Aureal 3D interface. I looked into it further, and lo and behold, Mr.
Sterling is onto something.

I'm just a little confused as to which one the CMI8338 is supposed to
be. The Aureal 8820 or 8830. The Vortex 1 sounds like what I have, but
I'm getting fooled by that 8830 number being more like 8338.

Ok, so like I've tried the 8820 drivers and they didn't happen, but then
I read all this stuff about removing the old drivers from the MMOS2.ini
file in the Lorne (male couterpart name)
Sunley letter. So the question is (finally) has anybody had any success
with the Vortex drivers and Aureal sound? Does anybody have a C-Media
sound "card" working with OS/2 Warp 4?

Most of all, I am begging IBM to PLEASE provide support for 3-D onboard
sound capabilities. What does it take? I'm not rich, but I'm a good
cook. Millions of Christmas Sugar cookies? Tons of Lasagna, extra
cheese? I mean this is really begging here.

Thanks in advance. Should I send the food to Boulder, IBM?

Your best choice is the ESS Solo-1 PCI card - it crushes
anything else I have ever used. World-class driver support,
outstanding MIDI, hassle free PNP installation, etc.

And you can find one on pricewatch.com for under $20.

Tests to be a poor performer (even so, this is ess's best):

ESS has always been "not for consideration" in my list, but may work
just fine for some.

Subj: ESS 1978 Setup

From: Stefan Pelz <Stefan.Pelz@orthogon.de>

Hi all,

I'm using Daniela's modified ESS 1978 device driver (which is
originally for the 1968 I think). The drivers seems to load,
but mmpm does not work. I cannot play any sounds.

The hardware manager does not show an entry for the ESS,
forcing hardware-detection didn't help either.
Scan_pci shows the ESS device at PCI INT A, which is mapped
to IRQ 10.
Do I need to set the proper interrupt for the device driver?
What are the options for MASTR2E.SYS?
The multimedia installation program added a single line
to the config.sys:

device=c:\mmos2\mastr2e.sys N:MAEST$  (or the like ...)

Anybody got a working setup?

Yes, I was succesful with Daniela's driver. It worked for my Toshiba
laptop with PCI Maestro sound card. The only flaw is the sound level,
quite low compared with the obtained in Win9x.

Thanks for the hint. I removed the whole MMOS2-directory and reinstalled it.
But there is no difference. Could there be any problems with driver
interference (i do not understand a lot of this stuff)? I have installed Linux

I have downloaded the Warp3 drivers from Analog Devices for my

How do I get the driver to find this car? It works fine under W95 (of

I (still) use this card, and have probably seen much the same thing,
though not consistently.
Relative volumes can "wander" annoyingly, depending on what you are
doing. You might
think that it _would be_, but the volume setting you have for general
system stuff is not
always *necessarily* the same as the volume you have set for your CD
player module (the
built-in one, anyway). Play Klondike Solitaire and you may find
yourself with another
different volume. The volume for WarpAmp seems to be independent of
these other
settings. I don't believe there is anything wrong with the card, MMOS2,
settings, etc.
Perhaps it is just a quirk of this card and its driver. Other
card/driver combinations have
their own particular quirks, which can be worse, per reports I've heard.

There is none. The last SB card to have a full, tested driver was the
old SB-AWE32. (Someone
worked out procedures for hacking decent support for the later AWE-64,
but supporting it as if
it was an AWE-32.) The SB-Live is a later generation card, and
everything about it is different.
However, there have been reports that the driver sources for this are
due to be released. Should
this occur, it becomes possible that someone may create a new OS/2
driver based on it. Keep
up with things like the WARPCAST for any further developments.

So what does you entry in Config.Sys look like?
Which info does the hardware-manager show about the ESS

None that know of.

Get the card, really....do yourself a favour. SCSI scanners are fast
(!!!) and once you have spent on the card you can then add heaps of
other really fast stuff to your system like a SCSI tape streamer, hard
drives etc.

Even here in Australia, where even cheap things, in general, are not
really cheap, you can get a F_SCSI PCI bus master card for less than
AU$150.00 (Hmm...what around US$90??)

It can become disheartening sometimes when the latest and greatest
stuff doesnt seem to have drivers for use under OS/2. Have a look at
what does have drivers though, its mainly industrial strength stuff
that really -works-. Now have a look at the stuff that doesnt have
drivers like PP scanners, Windows modems etc.....this stuff, in
general (with a few exceptions granted) is toy stuff that doesnt even
work well under windows and is a long way from industrial strength.

You won't believe what a difference SCSI makes until you start buying
some SCSI gear. It really works and its -FAST-. Don't forget also,
that in the PC world, IRQ's are hard to come by, there are never
enough of the little blighters (hehe). Although technically PCI makes
sharing of interrupts a possiblity, doing so can often compromise your
system as the driver support for doing this is often questionable. A
Fast SCSI card will give you support for 6 extra devices whilst only
using 1 irq, an UW or U2 SCSI card ups that to 14 extra devices per
irq.

Man, that PGP junk sure is a waste of bandwidth. Why would anyone want
to use that with a PUBLIC forum such as the news groups???

As far as I know, there are no USB drivers for any USB scanner.
Without drivers, you cannot use one. Perhaps, in the future, somebody
will write USB drivers for USB scanners, but today? NO.

Hope this helps...
