From: jdc0014@InfoNET.st-johns.nf.ca (John Hong)

Well, I'm happy to report that the problem I had with my Matrox
video card in relation to the Crystal Semiconductor soundcard in regards
to Win-OS/2 is now gone. The latest drivers reported by WarpCast that
Matrox has released solved the problem.
One thing that still irks me for Win-OS/2. The Courier font
there is displayed *horribly*. In fact whether I am under Word 6 or
Describe 5 for Windows 3.1, the listed font sizes are like 2-4.5 which is
way too small.

Oh well, spoke too soon. It's gone again. :-(

I rebooted into Win95 to scan in some pictures, then went back to
OS/2. Now Win-OS/2 doesn't work anymore. I think there must be some sort
of resource conflict. Otherwise, it shouldn't of worked the first time
around.

Subj: Small Fonts for WIN-OS2

From: "Chris Theron" <xxctheronxx@xxiafricaxx.com>

I use a S3 Trio 3D video card. Installing its driver adds a new object
"S3 Windows Font Size" to the System Setup Folder. This allows one to
choose between "large" or "small" fonts for Win/OS2 sessions.
I particularly like the small fonts because in some of my Win-OS2
apps it paints the whole Windows window in the Win-OS2 window,
whereas with the "large fonts I have to keep on scrolling left/right
and up/down. Unfortunately there are other 'not so nice' things in
this driver's behaviour.

I have looked at the IBM GRADD080 driver, and like it a lot, but I
cannot get the "small" fonts like in the S3 driver, although I
suspect that it ought to be possible.

I have looked at the WIN.INI files in the two scenarios, and in the
S3 case there are two entries:

  Small Fonts (VGA res)=smalle.fon
  Small Fonts (8514/a res)=smallf.fon

The second of these two is not present in the IBM GRADD080 version.
I have tried to add it, but it still does not give me the small
fonts.

I would really appreciate it if someone can show/tell me EXACTLY
what to add or change in ALL the files that need to be changed
to give me the desired effect.

BTW, I have also looked at the latest (B11) beta of Schitec's
Display doctor, but there are similar problems to what I
experience with the S3 Driver

Sorry, I forgot to mention I already did that. After 6 attempts at installing
the new drivers. I could no longer restore to VGA. My system would trap out
with a Trap d. I used a backup and restored to get my system up and running.
But this still has nothing to do with the DSPINSTL.EXE program. If it isn't
working once you have restored to VGA you need this to install the new
drivers.

The GRADD drivers are pretty sound but they will probably be a little
slower than the S3 driver. I don't have a machine around right now with
the GRADD drivers on it but I *think* there was a similar thing
somewhere for the small Win-OS2 fonts. Every driver does this a little
differently. For example, on the Matrox drivers there's a Matrox object
that you right click on to bring up a "settings" book a la Warp 3. One
of the pages in the notebook has options for small fonts. I think the
GRADD driver does something similar. Right click on the video "system"
object and see what's there. Or look for another new object...

Depends on what the error is. Video drivers seem to cause
their fair share, but it could also be the application program
or a bug in the PMMERGE routine called, or a bug in the
application program.

The popuplog.os2 file in the root directory of your boot
drive has a record of the register dump. Let us see what
that is and maybe we'll have a better idea.

Your suspicion may be correct. I have a Matrox here with a Crystal
semiconductor sound card and I have no problems with WinOS2. I use it all
the time for Pointcast and Quicken98.
(FYI, it is Millenium I and a PCI card from AOpen. AW230? I believe)

On the Gradd side, try changing to a stock color scheme on you desktop and
see if printing works. I was getting the black page printing because I made a
custom desktop color scheme. Can't figure why this messes with printing but
it did on my comp.

From: dmn@cheerful.com (Damiano Rullo)

Hi

I've a problem when installing warp 4 (italian) on a machine which
comes with an s3 virge.
The standard driver seem to use a wrong color palette.
The GRADD drivers by the way shows correct colors on the scrren but
prevents my hp laserjet 1100 from printing correctly (I get annoyng
black toner covered pages).
Is there a way to avoid the problem, having one of standard or gradd
drivers working as it should?

Thanks

Damiano

From: not@here.invalid (Braxton Burrsaddle)

My creaky old laptop has a WDC 90C24 video chipset, and it was
supported under Warp v3. When I reloaded with v4 (from scratch) I
found that the WDC drivers won't install on v4.

Can you supply a hint about where I might find drivers for this
chipset that will load on v4?

From: nospam.wxperson@pcwp.com

I have an old Pent 133 system with a Trident TVGA8900C card in it (1
meg).

I installed OS2 (V4) OK but I cannot configure it for anything better
than 640x480x16 colors.

When I do the display driver install, it selects the correct display
adapter but when it comes to determining the hardware configuration I
keep getting a message " SVGA Installation Errror: Unable to determine
hardware configuration". I have tried both the manual and the
automatic detection methods.

Does anyone have any advice on this?

Thanks,

Netscape has just been installed and is also displaying the

I can't help thinking this is something to do with the video drivers. The
machine
has an S3 Vision 864 chip although I'm using GRADD drivers. Maybe I'll try
some
specific S3 drivers. The latest SciTech drivers produce a Trap D.

All the traps except the MINSTALL one are happening in
the same routine in PMMERGE it's either a bug
in the PMMERGE code or it's the video driver.

Try S3 specific drivers and see if that makes
a difference. Are you using the GRADD 80
drivers or the earlier GRADD 77?

You don't say what version, and fix pack, of OS/2. If it is warp2
FP12, there seems to be a problem with PMMERGE.DLL. There is a newer
(very unofficial) version available, which seems to fix, at least some
of, the problems. I seem to have misplaced the file name, sorry...
Perhaps, it is still in the incoming list at the OS/2 supersite (
http://www.os2ss.com/ ). Something like PMR00052.ZIP.

Hope this helps...

Does this mean that I can plug in a 2nd video card and run 2 displays?
Are the displays independent (i.e. different view, resolution or
whatever)? And how is it controlled? Does a new page in the system
notebook magically appear to control the second video card?

If it works as advertised, I'm considering acquiring a 2nd card to play
around with.

Thanks,
Isaac

Yes, there are Savage4 drivers for OS/2. I am running on a Savage4 right
now. I recommend using SDD/2 beta9 though. With the S3 specific ones,
everytime I attempted to use PMView 1.05 I would get a trap D (all the way
out to the black screen -- no more OS/2). Of course, SDD beta11 produces a
black screen, but beta9 works fairly well.

If you want to try the Savage4 drivers, they are on hobbes, just do a
search for S3. There is a newer set on hobbes that I did not try, and it
might take care of the trap problem. Then again it might not.

Hopefully the next beta of SDD takes care of the S3 problems, as I believe
it has been tracked down very thouroughly (at least all of us S3 owners had
the same problem). SDD is really the way to go because of being able to
switch out any of the graphics hardware without re-installs. That is what
sold it to me. And the upcoming Odin support.

I've got an AST Ascentia 900n and the drivers I'm using are at

I believe drivers for this chipset come with Warp 4, but these drivers
are newer (and they work fine for me).

Installing video drivers is ssooooooo much fun.... not!
IBM have different 'latest' drivers on different sites

One package - S3_864.ZIP dated 97/07/16 is described as:-

S3_864 VIDEO DRIVER BUILD A.052

A different one - S3T30316.EXE dated 98/01/09 is shown as:-

S3, Inc. Vision864/964/868/968/Trio32/64/64V+/64V2 Version 3.03.16 Built 6 Jun

Originally I used the video drivers which are included in WSeB. I don't know
if they are the same as GRADD 80, but I have tried GRADD 80 also.

None of these have worked so far. Maybe I'll re-install Warp 4.....

I didn't realize you are using WSeB.

GRADD 80 is pretty close to the WSeB release
drivers, they would probably be the same or close
to it.

The routine address where the trap is appears to
be called GETDRIVERINFO32, it starts at address
0010631C and there doesn't appear to be anything
else around that location. At least it is in the
WSeB PMMERGE.DLL that I have on my WSeB system.

That's the PMMERGE.DLL 00004:0010c240 trap.

Have you tried using the WSeB GA GENGRADD
driver to see if that one works?

<snip stuff>

The driver for the video card is responsible for handling
the video card. IBM has the GRADD drivers that will
work with a number of ATI AGP cards. I'm not sure if
the Rage Pro is one of them. I know that the 3D Rage II
cards are supported by the GRADD drivers.

The Matrox series video cards both AGP and PCI are
supported in OS/2.

The OS does not have much to do with the AGP video
card slot. The support for the video hardware
comes from the driver.

Try the Scitech Device Docter driver. It is currently
in Beta. It is supposed to support the Rage Pro chip

Mine an ATI XPert98 AGP. They have identical chipsets. I use the GRADD
8
drivers (GEN). They allow higher resolutions and colors but are a bit
slow. It was real slow until I upgraded my monitor to a A70 ViewSonic.
The higher refresh rates helped quite a lot. I went from 1024x768 at 62
Hz to 1024x768 at 85Hz.

AGP is just a glorified PCI slot. Should make no difference other than
finding drivers at all.

That could be a problem, but make sure you have a good set of boot
diskettes, and a GOOD backup, and try it. I expect that if it will
boot, it should work (of course, it MIGHT totally destroy your system,
so use a little good judgment here <g>). PMMERGE,DLL may, or may not,
be the same in WSEB.

Hope this helps...

Nope, sorry. The second card is limited to text-only. It's really only
usefull for debugging output. You can run full-screen OS/2 sessions on
it if you like, but AFAIK the system focus is relegated to that session
untill you exit (ie: you can't have a full-screen session on the second
monitor and still type on the primary)

However, Win98 has a very well thought-out multiple monitor solution
that I've tried myself. Each monitor is resolution and color depth
independant, so if you're doing graphic or web work, you can view your
picture/web site at different resolutions/color depths w/o rebooting or
even res-switching. IMO, this is the second thing MS has ever done
right. (First was Word for Windows 2.0) Of course they just basically
copied Apple's multi-monitor scheme. :)

If you've got the extra $$ anyway, go ahead and buy a nice new G400 or
something, and hang on to your old card. SciTech has promised to add
multiple display capabillity to SDD/2, on par with Win98 at least.

I don't mean to be encouraging people to cowboy their systems, but
swapping in a PMMERGE.DLL from another version merely keeps it from
booting. Just learn how to reboot, gracefully and without cursing, to
a command line wherein you'll copy the previous version back in. A
good notebook is a nice thing to keep, if you're playing with things
like this, because in other cases (than PMMERGE) you might encounter
problems days or weeks later that you might trace to that wild seed,
and the notebook will jigger your memory to restore it before going
completely insane.

And of course I can be wrong about this particular situation, because
I haven't tried the swap in question with the file versions in
question.

I have an ATI Xpert at Play card (Rage Pro) and can't find any drivers to do
the job using this card, so OS2/4 chugs along in 640*480/256. Not very good.
Does os2/4 actually offer AGP support at all? John Stafford

Have a look at the following:
SP8791.exe	This SoftPaq contains the files needed to install the video
drivers for IBM OS/2 for the ATI Rage Pro Turbo 1X, 2X, and
Rage IIC Graphics Controller. Optionally allows a driver
		diskette to be created.
-> News von Trevor Helmsey: Go to www.compaq.com and head
for the downloads page. Hit the desktop section and tell it
that you have a Deskpro EN 6266 and are running IBM OS/2.
It'll give you a list of possible downloads. One of these
is the ATI V5.0 video drivers... I have no idea if they'll
work on non-Compaq machines but on the EN 6266 they work perfectly.
		Version 5.00 Rev. B, 23 Nov 1998.
		-> http://www.compaq.com/support/files/desktops/us/4_198.html
		-> http://www.compaq.com/support/files/desktops/us/software/1137.html

This drivers works very well with an ATI Xpert@Work, AGP, 8MByte. I don't
know if the links are still appropriate, but you should be able to find the
SoftPaq or even a newer version.

Yeah, but that takes all the FUN out of trying to figure out what you
did to mess something up <G>.

I knew a guy, a few years ago, who kept very detailed records of
everything that he did to his computer, in a file on the computer. Of
course, when the computer quit working, he had no way to get at the
data to see what he did, that might have caused the problem. The
moral of this story, is keep an actual notebook, with more, or less,
legible scribbling in it, if you are going to keep a log of events.

Hope this helps...

This is maybe caused by a too long config.sys file, dspinstl.exe can
read only 600 lines and fail if config.sys is longer.
If you are a user of the Config.sys Editor Tyra/2 you should upgrade
to version 1.80.

I'm not ashamed to reveal that when I began my first attempts at using
OS/2, I fully intended to use a running note file on the root of the
HD, to keep track of all such items. IBM should (still) be ashamed
that I had to give that up almost immediately, since I couldn't get
access to the HD often enough to use it.

And I've still got the little steno pad I had to switch to, first
dated entry 6-25-95, now dogeared and grimy. Sigh. La nostalgie. And
the book even lists some of the names of IBM-ers who should be the
most ashamed for jacking me around with my problems back then. When
they auction my estate at Christie's, whoever ends up with the steno
pad will be able to publicize those names to make their heirs cringe.
