Some good work on MAME/2, I was wondering if full screen mode will be a
possibility
in a future version? And if so, would non-full screen DIVE be faster than full
screen DIVE?

thanks!

I know that Loki's doing it for Linux, but could this be a possibilty
for OS/2 as well? Wasnt PolyEx software porting things for OS/2 at one
point? That would be an excellent way of bring some big nice games to
/2!

I cant help but notice the nice selections of source-included program
packages out there, that could all be ported for OS/2. Sure, I'm talkin'
mostly of Linux software, but ....it shouldnt matter to much. Of course,
a native version, written entirely for OS/2, of the equivalant (or
better :) of the same program's always good to! ...

We dont necessarily have to have or rely on big major corporations
making software for us /2 users ...which we really shouldnt anyway cause
its not happening anymore (nearly)...

Subj: would it be possible to....

From: Trancser <jbergman@ixc.ixc.net>

I dont really know myself if this could be done, but the source code for
all kinds of video card drivers are available for Linux. Would it be
possible to port those to OS/2. I know that (for me anyway) Linux video
can be extremely fast, far faster than any Windows drivers even! And if
the optimization and speed of these drivers could be harnessed for use
with /2, we might have the same performance with OS/2?

So far, having installed the 11th beta of SciTech Display Doctor for
OS/2, my video is exceptionally faster than the native drivers for my
card (under /2), I can say at least. But, when under Linux, using X (+ a
window manager of course), no matter how many programs are cluttering my
desktop, dragging a program over another one gives me almost no
re-painting-over-the-program effect that I do get within OS/2.

However, I'm almost begining to think that the video drivers themselves
might not be the problem, but rather the way OS/2 handles its interface?

If I can ever get the Scitech drivers and MGL apps running on my system
there is a possibility of a full screen version. Unfortunately, MGL
applications lock up my system entirely with the Matrox drivers. SDD
itself installs and runs on my system ok, but I can't change the refresh
rates the way I need them to be to use my monitor, so until this is
fixed, the drivers are useless to me.

Any other method of full screen access in OS/2 won't work above
320x200x8 with my Matrox card (believe me, I've tried them all). I was
thinking about implementing one method anyway, but I wouldn't be able to
test it thoroughly and it might not be compatible with all video
hardware.

Running full screen would be a lot faster than running in a window
because I can have direct access to the video memory and would be in the
exact color mode I need and wouldn't have to convert anything. I could
also use the palette registers in a full screen mode, greatly speeding
up some games as I wouldn't have to redraw an entire image to change a
color.

Well I think there is absolutely no sense in investing time into video card
drivers because of SciTech Display Doctor. I think in the final release we
will get very good performance and we should bether start working on other
device drivers.

Darn. Um, have you tried it in full screen DIVE already, does it not work good
...or not
at all?

Kinda wonder just how much better MGL is to DIVE (I'm using SDD/2 right now
myself, but
dont really know of many MGL-using apps).

Subj: Tar and gz files

From: Scott Vetter <svetter@ameritech.net>

I'm running OS/2 V4 and have some files that are suffixed in tar.tar
though the original files are suffixed with tar.gz. I have one tar
program which doesn't seem to work no matter what the suffix is. How
does one use the tar program? Can it handle .gz files? Is there a
different tar program I should be using?

Thank you,

Scott

If it is a .tar.gz file, then you must first use gunzip (or gzip -d).
Then you will be left with a .tar file. You can run tar xf filename.tar
to extract it or tar xvf filename.tar to extract it and watch it as it
progresses.

You need another GNU program named gzip:
	gzip -d file.tar.gz | tar xvf -

Would you know any compilers or tools that can be used to port Os/2 C
code to Windows 98 / NT?? If the Visual Age compilers do it, how do you
enable it,etc.??

- Very Curious. Thanks again.

If the programs are written with IBM VAC++ version 3 I belive there is
a Windows version of the compiler. In that case you just have to
re-compile with the Windows version of IBM VAC++.

IBM's VAC++ version 4 comes with both the OS/2 and
the Windows version of the compiler.

That's if the programs used the IBM Open Class libraries
to do any GUI stuff. If the programs are written using the
OS/2 PM calls directly, I think it means a re-write using
the Windows API.

Anyone else know of any automated "code converters"

Subj: MAME for OS/2 version .36 beta 11 is available

From: Marty <mamodeo@stny.rr.com>

MAME stands for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator.

It allows you to play up to 1900 classic (and some not-so-classic) arcade
games
from the 70's through the 90's from the comfort of your OS/2 desktop.

The OS/2 version has been updated to the latest version of the MAME core (.36
beta 11). If you are upgrading from beta 6 or higher, it will automatically
update your Quick List and scan for newly supported games the first time you
start it up so you don't have to manually rescan everything from scratch and
erase your Favorites list.

The following items have changed since version .36 beta 10:

* Updated to MAME core version .36 beta 10
* Fixed a bug requiring an extra keystroke when the MAME core asks you to
type "OK" to acknowledge a message

A suggestion was made to show the joystick button status to the Input Options
dialog box. I haven't had the time to do this yet, but it will be implemented
by the next release.

Another suggestion was made to run LxLite on the executables, which I have
done. The executables shrank from 10MB to 4MB, although the ZIP file is about
the same size to download.

As always, you can download the latest release 486 and Pentium optimized
versions from http://emuos2.vintagegaming.com.

Enjoy!
