From: Jim Danvers <jim.danvers@mindex.com>

Thanks for the response Tom...

I'm becoming increasingly frustrated with the OS (OS/2) in general. :( It's
to
bad too - I ran it back "in the day" when bbs's and FidoNet were the way that
computer geeks communicated and it was a superb platform for the hardware and
software that was available at the time. Now... I have twice the processing
power, 8 times the hard disk space and memory, yet I can't get it (OS/2) to
run
all of my periphals (or even install in some cases) with the PC's that I have
around here, and unfortunately the outlook for it continues to spiral
downward.
On the other side of the coin though, the MS product (9x-NT) all install and
run
with all of my hardware with a minimal of issue. {sigh} I'm spec'ing out a
new
PC - guess that I'm just going to have to take my time, do some research on
ALL
of the peripherals that I would like to use with it, and ensure that
everything
that I choose will work with Linux & OS/2 - Win compatibility is a no brainer
-
you ~know~ it'll work.

I saw an article in Taiwan's OS/2 newsgroup as few weeks ago,
they said that because Creative&Aureal released their driver source code,
one company called Theta Band Software decided
that they are going to write OS/2 drivers for Creative&Aureal's chips.
But they are not going to release the source code.
And, if there are any other companies who want to write OS/2 drivers for
these chips,
Thera Band Software will never write the OS/2 drivers again anymore.....

Does anybody know it's ture or not?

Greetings all,

I saw a ZIPapp that is loaded via path statement [I think] that when you

click on a zipped file, instead of it trying to load in to an editor, it
unzips
it into the zip file directory?

I must have lost it when I reinstalled and can't remember the name of

thing.

Thanks.

Hello Doug,

Ok! RESTORE seems to accept the diskette. However, I run into the
following problem. I would like to restore all files, but don't have
any cue as to the file names and their original directory names! For
example, on

RESTORE A: C:*.*
I get "no such file on the source diskette" and nothing is restored

RESTORE A: C:\*.*
I get only one file restored, with the following message: "Incorrect
file restoring sequence" (translated from French)

I tried the same with options /S or /D, with the same results.

Any hint?!

Thank you!

Denis

From: "Antonio Relyea" <arelyea@vt.edu>

Hello,
I have been running injoy for quite some time, however, when I want
to run a DOS/Win-OS/2 TCP/IP utility (such as RealPlayer) I can't. I can not
use literal addresses (ie. www.cowsanddogs.com) but it WILL work with numeric
addresses (133.43.22.2). However, if I disconnect and reconnect with the IBM
Dial Up tool (DOIP) then everything works as it should. What do I need to do
with Injoy to make it work?

Tony.

Hey you were lucky - when I tested it, it took ages to load
a driver on boot up and then when attempting to run it it
just quietly disappeared without trace. The evaluation
edition did the same from my hard drive shortly after!

Subj: BackupWiz log file question

From: fheitka@ibm.net (F. Heitkamp)

I use BackupWiz 1.13 to backup my Warp 4 disks. Sometimes
I will get a message from BackupWiz saying "Errors reported.
Examine log file." The problem is is that the log file is
over 1MB in size and finding the actual error messages by
paging through the whole file is a major pain. Can anyone
tell me what the typical error messages are so that I can
grep for them using epm or something? Or any other suggestions
to solve the problem would be welcomed as well. I've also
been thinking about getting a new backup program, since
BackupWiz is quite old, and I don't think they support OS/2
anymore. Besides that I lost my original disk so I guess
I can't upgrade anyway. So if you have any suggestions or
comments about various backup programs I'd welcome them as
well.

Thanks.

Fred

I'm using version 1.19, the error log has a filename extension
of bws5.err on my version.

You can use a text editor such as EPM to go through the log. Search for
"****" to find error messages.

Typically a system file is locked at the time of back-up or something is
running that changed a file between back-up and verify.

Many times the files in question do not need to be backed-up and can be
put on the exclusion list. By not backing them up, you'll eliminate the
error message.

The surest method to prevent this sort of problem is to shut down the
system and the network, then boot from a maintenance partition and back
up the main partition.

You can probably find what you need at hobbes.nmsu.edu
in the /pub/os2/util/archiver directory.

You could also use the workplace shell and make
program objects that do the same thing.

RESTORE works a bit differently than most (some?) other DOS commands.
You can't pick a specific file from a BACKUP archive, you must restore
everything to it's original location within the dir tree. The only
destination option you have is a drive:\directory. So make yourself a
temp dir with nothing in it and then use "RESTORE A: C:\TEMP" and it'll
dump the contents of the archive diskette into the temp dir.

Another thing, BACKUP disks consist of the full backed up filespec and
if it required more than one disk to hold it these disks will be in
numbered sequence i.e. BACKUP.001, BACKUP.002 etc. And you must have
the full set of disks and restore them in order.

Good luck.

Hmmm. I have Backup Wiz 1.11s5 and would love a newer version. Any
idea where to get it? I've written to the address on my copy but
get nothing. It works and I've been using it since OS/2 2.1, but a
newer version would probably be better.

From: James Moe <sma.spam-not@rtd.com>

Hello,
I attempted to create a bootable image on a removable hard drive (an
ORB 2.2GB disk). All attempts terminated prematurely. The display that
shows what files are being transferred indcates this:

C:=\
F:=\

and a message that the file cannot be found. Hmmm. Well, no file shown
to transfer. The docs say a PM image should be about 9MB in size. All I
get is 1.5MB. The same for a WPS image. The text-only version is also
incomplete.
There does not seem to be an explicit list of files to copy so I
cannot tell what is happening when it tries to copy nothing. Nor is
there is logfile.

    Any suggestions?

Check to see if the file "RESOLVE" is present
in the directory \TCPIP\DOS\ETC and contains
the correct nameserver addresses.

The WINOS2 and DOS TCP/IP applications
use this file to find out what the nameserver
addresses are. If the file does not contain
the correct addresses names will not be
resolved correctly.

AFAIK - DOIP writes out this file, maybe Injoy
is not doing this.

You either need to RTFM or get an updated copy of BOOTOS2. :) From
BOOTOS2.DOC:

TRACE Use this option to create a Trace of the Install Process.
A file called BOOTOS2.LOG will be created that will
contain a complete record of the requested BOOT System
Install process. By default the LOG file will be created
on the same physical directory the BOOTOS2.EXE program
resides on. You can optionally specify an alternate path
        and file name for the LOG file;

The OS/2 v3 blue spine is pretty dated. But...you can still install it
and use it if you are willing to do a fair bit of work to update the
installation disks for new disk drives and controllers, apply fixpacks
for TCP/IP, device drivers, and OS/2 base install, and then diligently
search for hardware drivers and compatible hardware. Everyone has to
make their own decision as to the value to making this sort of effort.
My own experience is that Windows 9x installs are easier to do but when
you get all done with the install you are left with...Windows. The time
you save in the initial Win9x OS install is likely to be expended many,
many times in effort to deal with subsequent software issues. By way of
example, one nasty habit that Win9x apps have is writing numerous DLLs
to the Windows/system directory where they eventually create conflicts
and problems requiring complete reinstallation of the OS (Win9x users
call this a 'clean install.') If you go to uninstall one of these Win9x
apps, it will likely interrogate you frequently during the uninstall
asking if you want to delete such-and-such shared .DLL file. And the
answers are not easy. Delete the wrong file and you can break other
apps. Never delete and your Window/system directory fills up quickly
with garbage. My opinion is that Windows needs about 10 hours of
maintenance for every 1 hour expended on OS/2 maintenance, all other
things being equal. And this is being kind to Windows.

Unfortunately, as others pointed out, there are no OS/2 drivers for a
Creative PCI 128. OS/2 PCI sound drivers do exist for Aureal Vortex 1
cards, ESS Solo 1 cards, C-media, and Crystal-based cards.

Look at HOBBES for ZIPSTREAM:

And:

Get a new vendor???

More details, what, exactly, is confilicting with the IRQs? A PS/2
mouse (in a default configuration) will use IRQ12. You may need to
move the conflicting device to another IRQ to get it working.
Otherwise, OS/2 uses a PS/2 mouse, without any special handling at
all.

Give us a few DETAILS, and you will, likely, get some help...

Try: http://charette.dyn.tj/dcitu/index.html but from what I have
read this is strictly serial port connection.

As of now there is only USB OS/2 support for Mice, Keyboards, modems
and speakers. and that only works with Intel chipsets (Via if you get
the patched driver off of hobbes).

Not to change the subject, but what about Firewire, 1394 support for
OS2? I have a Sony digital camera that has the 1394 port, but am not at
all sure how to get it into OS2.

From: "Kerry Lord" <klord@bhbt.com>

We have OS/2 Warp3 and need to get the mouse to work, but since the vendor
put it on a new PC with PS2 mouse, we haven't been able to use it. Then
vendor said sorry can't do, because of IRQ conflicts..

Is this true or is there a way around this?

Thanks!

Subj: delay starting an app from startup group?

From: "Kerry Lord" <klord@bhbt.com>

Is there a way to delay an application from starting in the startup group?

We have an OS/2 Warp 3 that reboots itself every night and we also have a
backup agent program that needs to be loaded so the OS/2 box can be backed
up.

I've put the back up agent software into the Startup Group, but since
another application is still loading the back up software can't load until
about a minute later. Since this happens at midnight, no one is around to
start the back up program.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Take the backup agent out of the startup group. In its place, use the
following CMD file:

/* */
call sleep 120 /* wait 2 minutes */

'backupagent.exe and its params'

make the SET ETC= statement in your autoexec.bat file look exactly like the
one in your config.sys file..
that way both Warp AND win apps look to the same resolv file (the one that
InJoy updates *every* connect)
this little tip is well documented in InJoy's online Often Asked Questions
page..
(I don't have the address handy, but it should be found somewhere below
www.fx.dk/injoy)

and, if you still have problems look in userguid.txt for "SET ETC=" and you
will eventually find info on resolv2, which may or may not help..

and, if all else fails join the free InJoy mail list

Last I heard, someone needs to define a USB middleware definition for all
digital cameras (or similar devices) and then we can create the specific
camera interfaces. I've had very little luck coding anything that will talk
to
a USB device.

I haven't heard of Firewire for OS/2 yet. I'm sure someone has at least
though
about it.

Subj: ext2 FS under OS/2 and OS2ASPI

From: remove-this-firsrt-scole@texas.net

I've been using ext2os2 for quite some time to read my Linux partitions under
OS/2. I recently bought a SCSI CD-RW drive and wanted to be able to burn
CD's from both Linux and OS/2. I decided on cdrecord. Problem is,
OS2ASPI.DMD
must be loaded for the OS/2 port of cdrecord. Doing do with the required
"/ALL" parameter causes my system to lock up if I have OS2ASPI.DMD and
EXT2FLT.FLT loaded at the same time - order doesn't seem to matter.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? I'm stuck with either being able to
burn CD's under OS/2 but not have access to my Linux partitions or being
unable
to burn CD's on OS/2 but being able to access my Linux partitions. I have a
common drive I use to 'stage' the CD images before creating them that I wish
to share with my OS/2 and Linux installations.

My *.SYS says SET ETC=C:\MPTN\ETC

and

my *.BAT says SET ETC=c:\tcpip\dos\etc

so you are saying that I should
change my *.BAT to read SET ETC=C:\MPTN\ETC ????

That's not quite correct. You can restore all, or any part of, the
backup. The only restriction is that it will restore to the same
subdirectory that it was backed up from.

For example, to restore CONFIG.SYS: RESTORE A: \CONFIG.SYS

To restore the OS2 directory and all its files: RESTORE A: \OS2

To restore all subdirectories under the one specified, add the /S
parameter. To list the contents without actually restoring them, add the
/D parameter.

Last time I checked PCX had a website where you could download
an upgrade after filling out a form. Before that they had a BBS.
Unfortunately, when I couldn't find my original disk (serial number
required for upgrade) I lost interest.

Here's what I found on the Web.

The phone Number for PCX is:

619-259-9797
Fax 619-481-6165
BBS 619-481-6474
CompuServe - OS2BVEN

The web site: http://www.pcx.com does not appear to be working.
Perhaps they've gone out of business.

Well, maybe you could try partfilt.flt instead? That's what I use with
my EXT2 and FAT32 partitions.

How big chans is there that a swedish taxprogram
will function in OS/2 WARP with Edins new Win32

I know it's only alpha, does that mean that

We won't know until you try it.

The chance of it running depends on the particular
Windows API's that the program uses. If the API's
used are supported by the current version of Odin
the program will work.

My system - Warp 4fp6 - has no problem with this. Configs.sys has, in
this order but with other things in between:
basedev=partfilt.flt /p 0b /w
BASEDEV=EXT2FLT.FLT /W
BASEDEV=OS2ASPI.DMD /SHARE
Don't know if /share rather than /all makes any difference?

http://www.os2voice.org/ez-reference/fixpak.html I followed the directions
for an install off my hard drive, not floppy disks which takes too long
while this went quickly. It was easy. I installed FP11.

The fixpack files came from this ftp site.
ftp://service.software.ibm.com/ps/products/os2/fixes/v4warp/english-us/xr_m011/

My advice is to be sure to at least run chkdsk prior to the install to be
sure not to have any disk errors. I have my system boot with the HPFS
automatically checking my drives. It seems easier than booting off the
floppies and running chkdsk. You can modify the CONFIG.SYS file line
where the cache is installed. You add '+' signs in front of all cached
disks i.e. +c+d+e

OS/2 Help will give you the correct symantics -- search help for "cache"
to see the exact syntax. "Help cache"

After the system is okay and running you can edit and remove the forced
chkdsk if that slows down boot time.

I think I'll try using partfilt and see what happens. BTW, if I have '/share'
it
works fine. It is only when I add '/all' to OS2ASPI that it locks.

Wow! Look what I started... (I kinda forgot about this thread - sorry
guys...) I have been "talking" with a few other people in the os/2 tcpip
group regarding getting a box attached to an NT network. (I finally managed
to get Warp v4 installed on one! <@work though... still can't get it to run
on my hardware here @home... :( )

In anycase though - since I did remember to re-visit this group (I ~thought~
that maybe I posted something in here...) I see that there has been some
banter regarding the original question about the sb drivers - the open source
thing looks promising - lets hope that someone does write some drivers for the
sb cards!

Anyway - sorry for not expressing my appreciation for the help guys - I just
forgot to check back... {shrug shoulders}

FYI, using partfilt.flt rather than ext2flt.flt appears to be working great.

You can, for example move starting Backup Agent from StartUp folder
to the STARTUP.CMD file. STARTUP.CMD runs before WPS starts, so
all program from STARTUP.CMD will be loaded before programs from
the StartUp folder.

For example, I start my agent software for the following manner:

=== End part of of STARTUP.CMD file ===
@C:
@CD \BKUPEXEC\OS2_WS
@START /C /MIN "OS/2 Workstation agent" C:\BKUPEXEC\OS2_WS\OS2_AGNT.EXE
@EXIT
=== End of STARTUP.CMD file ===

Yes. I run a 2Gb Jaz drive under Warp 4.0.
My drive is an external SCSI unit (actually my drive is knackered and I'm
waiting for a new one, but it did work before the hardware problem!) and
works just like a regular hard drive.

The PS/2 mouse uses IRQ#12.

You might have to update the BIOS of your system. I have read somewhere in
the news that it might fix some problem with mice access.

I suggest installing fixpack 12 rather than fixpack 11. Fixpack 11 had
a problem with HPFS and required downleveling to fixpack 10 HPFS files
(the fix was on Hobbes.) I download the floppy files and make the
floppyies with loaddskf.exe and then install them with the corrective
service tool from an OS/2 window. It's a little more trouble to make
floppies than doing the RSU update but also a little more secure, imo.

Isn't "Zipstream" the name of the compressed file system from Carbon-Based

Subj: Any good cron equivalents?

From: Steve Drewell <srd@x.mcmail.com>

Available on hobbes, there are a few cron/crontab/scheduler utilities and
I'm wondering if anyone has any opinions as to which is best in terms of
functionality, low CPU usage and low memory usage.

Cheers,
Steve

Subj: AssocEdit does'nt change jpg association to PMView

From: Joe Farruggio <jfarrug@erols.com>

HI
I have a pentium II system using os2 ver4 fixpak 12 and object desktop
ver 2 with fixpak 1. I have tried to associate my jpg files to Pmview
ver 2.00 Beta 16129 using AssocEdit ver 2.1 . The jpg files still open
using image viewer. I have evan changed the menu selection in the
properties page to use Pmview under the "Open as" menu. Once i close the
menu selection it reverts back to image viewer.

I next tried using the program "prmgfix" which is supposed to fix this
problem. Some jpg files then opened in PMView (specifically those that
came with OS2) but most did not. The ones that didn't where photos which

had been converted to jpg files from 35mm film. I had selected all of
the file types listed when PMView was installed/upgraded

I then tried to use the setdefv command which is native to OS2 and is
recommended in the PMView documentation as a fix for this problem. This
did absolutely nothing.

IF anyone has any insight into this problem, i would dearly love to
hear about any proposed solution. TIA

/SHARE switch on os2aspi.dmd line makes a big difference. almost
nothing works with the /all in there.

Unless you use both, I think. I've had (don't remember who steered me
to this, long ago) this load line forever, and use multiple scanner
drivers successfully:

BASEDEV=OS2ASPI.DMD /SHARE /ALL

BakUpWiz can generate separate error files which contain only the error
messages. If you use the sequential log file option where the log files end
in L01, L02, L03, ...., the error log files are E01, E02, E03, ....

I'm fairly happy with cronrgf.
