I still get a 1/2" wide band of noise along the entire left hand side
of the screen with a CL GD-5440 2 Mb PCI card. This happens in
all modes, ie. Desktop, PM, DOS FS, WINOS2 (seamless and FS), and
FS VIO. The noise appears as a slight discoloration, giving the effect
of colored "snow".

Also, there is no improvement in the dual screen capability (SVGA+
Mono) for DOS applications run in a VDM, which at present is unusable.
One could suspect that this is a gradd issue, which underlies the
sdd model, and hope that IBM will get around to correcting it before
it goes much further in beta.

From: mike.luther@ziplog.com

Earlier, I posted that Netscape 4.16 produced what I thought was
syncronized SYS3175 errors in pairs. I looked more closely!

**** This creature has triplets too!! ****

An email posted was questioning the short period of time between the
SYS3175 errors in the submitted pair I "embraced" for my posting. There
were only a few seconds apart in the timing of the SYS3175 errors.

I thought, at that point .. well, I'm attempting to reload in that few
seconds. I can kill off the first one with a mouse click and slam the
WPS for the second attempted load in just a few seconds. But LO!

Explain THIS one. I have numerous TRIPLETS in this deal in POPuPLOG.OS2.
I have SYNCHRONIZED SYS3175 errors which are even the SAME exact time
in the log! Remember, this is a good stable WARP 4.0 Fixpack 8 box.
Notie that I have *TWO* o=SYS3175 errors of the triplets that are at
even the same second!

Now I can carry on a 60WPM conversation in morse code on CW as a ham
operator by ear using a keyboard and used to be able to do it with a
keyer paddle as well... For 48 years now I've head the same call W5WQN
for those of you that work 40 and 80 loband CW chasing DX ... :)

but how is this possible unless this deal involves the clock
   as well .. ????

IIRC you need to install a fix pack, I recommend the latest one, although
I think you can get away with an earlier one. If you remember way back
when lotus smart suite distributed a special fix pack for Open32, which
was then integrated with the main fix packs - the point where it became
part of the main fix packs is the one you need at minimum - but I strongly
recommend that if you're installing one, go for the latest version.

I need to add that I have the same problem. I run Warp 4 + FP9 and have
followed the instructions for installing (quite simple). So my boot
drive is D:, Odin is in E:\Odin (which has been added to both PATH and
LIBPATH in config.sys).

I only had some trouble understanding if I had to change odin.ini or not
and how, but finally decided to include references to my real W98
partition (sorry about that).

When I try to PE a windows app (QW.EXE for Quicken98, does anyone know
if it should work?) I get the same message about kernel32.dll not being
found. I even tried copying it to D:\OS2\DLL for lack of any other clue!

I also installed win32k.sys, and yes I have XF86SUP.SYS installed as
well. But then when I try to load a windows app directly, I get another
error: OS2KRNL.SYM not found. Well the Odin doc says that it should be
present in most systems, but from what I gathered this is a file present
when you install the debug kernel, and I haven't.

If anyone knows how to get that inline with my current kernel at FP9
(It's on the Warp CD, but that's gotta be too old), I'm interested. But
I guess I'd then end up with the kenel32.dll not found error.

Oh, and last of all, I've tried to subscribe to the winos2 group on
egroup (got an ID I registered with) and I can now read the posts, no
way I can get to the point where the damn thing will allow me to post,
which is why I must post in c.o.o.b

Any clues anyone?

Thanks in advance
Francois

From: Joe Farruggio <jfarrug@erols.com>

HI
I have a pentium II system using os2 ver4 fixpak 12 and object desktop
ver 2 with fixpak 1. I have tried to associate my jpg files to Pmview
ver 2.00 Beta 16129 using AssocEdit ver 2.1 . The jpg files still open
using image viewer. I have evan changed the menu selection in the
properties page to use Pmview
under the "Open as" menu. Once i close the menu selection it reverts
back to image viewer.

I next tried using the program "prmgfix" which is supposed to fix this
problem. Some jpg files then opened in PMView (specifically those that
came with OS2) but most did not. The ones that didn't where photos which
had been converted to jpg files from 35mm film. I had selected all of
the file types listed when PMView was installed/upgraded

I then tried to use the setdefv command which is native to OS2 and is
recommended in the PMView documentation as a fix for this problem. This
did absolutely nothing.

IF anyone has any insight into this problem, i would dearly love to
hear about any proposed solution. TIA

Subj: Odin Application Database

From: "Adrian Gschwend" <nospam_ktk@netlabs.org>

Some days ago the Odin Team at OS/2 Netlabs released the first public
alpha version of Odin since the code is open source.

For those of you who still don't know it, Odin and Odin32 is an
approach to get Win32 support in OS/2 (it is no emulator!). The
homepage of the project is located at http://www.netlabs.org/odin/

We are very proud to say that the project made great progress, a lot
more applications are running with Odin actually, especially slim
programs. A lot of Odin users reported applications, which are running
on OS/2 without problems, for example:

- Acrobat Distiller 3.01 (PDF-File generator)
- SmartDraw (Chart designing program)
- CDRLabel (CD labeling application, even printing works very well)
- WinHelp (Help system of Windows)
- Word 6.0 for Windows NT 3.51 (32bit edition)
- ... and more

One of the very promising applications is Lotus Notes R5, we are
already able to start the application, you can find a screenshot of it
at the Odin page (it's mentioned in the "News" section). As you may
know we also working on a port of the Opera webbrowser to OS/2. With
Odin32 we can actually compile the whole V4.0 Win32-Sourcecode without
significant changes in the code.

If you are interested in our progress, check the Odin application
database at http://www.netlabs.org/odin/MiscApplications.phtml
You are also welcome to add your application to the database!

For impatient users we have daily builds available, note that we don't
support any of the Odin versions actually because progress is changing
almost every day. We are not that much interested in bug reports
because of this reason.
But we still need more skilled developers, the more support we get the
faster we are! If you think that you can support our project, get more
information about how to join at the Odin page.

That's it for the moment, thanks for all the support so far!

Jeffrey Kobal of the IBM Netscape team reported in a public message
that a a fixpak for Communicator v4.61 will be released AFTER January
2000 but there is a slight chance it may be released in mid-December.
And it will be free!

He added, "you won't have to pay to get fixpacks even after the
new year. Software Choice distributes whole software packages,
not fixpacks...

The above was reported to all members of Warp City on Saturday,
November 13th. Just one of the many tidbits we keep track of
for our members.

I'm not sure if they handle other than English, but check with Indelible
Blue. Last time I looked, their prices were better than IBM's.

Good news. I'll be able to keep up with the fixpacks until I can swing a
Software Choice membership.

Is it really only $100 a year?

It's a well kept secret, but there actually is a competent sales group
at IBM. Try this (I have no idea how/if it will work from Germany -
perhaps someone who knows more about that can help)

IBM Sales - (800) 426-2255

Note that this number does NOT go to the PC Company or to PSP - these
folks actually have a clue. If the operator requires a name, ask for DJ
or Steve.

This is the only sales department at IBM that knows what they're doing
that I've found in 20+ years of working with computers, including a few
working for IBM.

Software choice has always been for complete packages and not fixes (or
fixes which in effect upgrade a package to a newer version). Fixes are
free if you can find them, However, if a fix results in a newer version
then you cannot buy the new version unless you are part of software
choice. Examples, newer version of tcpip for warp server, PSNS for warp
server and so on.

I am not sure they can get away with charging either for Java or
Netscape, remains to be seen.

From a business point of view it does make sence for IBM to know what is
the subscription rate as the income generated may indicate interest in
os/2. From this end, I have to buy licences for my OS/2 server(s), it
would make business sence for us too. However, buying licences for
clients can be an expensive recurrent cost (I guess financial
institutions can be happy to pay it and may even negotiate better
prices).

Charles

While still at it... Does anyone have the list of files needed for Open32

I wasn't sure about the actual figure, and remembered it as $200. But that
still comes out at $125 a year, even though you can't get it for one year
at a time. The reason I said anything at all was I knew some people must
still think it is a lot higher than it really is.

When you consider that there are a lot of things on SWC other than Netscape
and Java, you're not getting a bad deal at all.

That's my point.

There are other things, but delivery of items are not guaranteed. You get
what IBM decides to deliver during your subscription period

Netscape and Java are free for other platforms. You might get UDF for DVD
and TCPIP 4.x updates. That's not worth $125/year for me.
If they could provide a "real" client upgrade, or a specific list of
deliverables, then yes, $125/year is not too bad.
