Subj: Re: Memory Recovery Tool?

From: "Graham C. Norris" <norrisg@spam_free_linkline.com>

Clobbering orphaned memory is almost impossible to do safely. The memory
in question is almost certainly shared memory, or it would go away when
the Netscape process dies: if the process doesn't die, then that's a
different problem.

The problem with shared memory is that it is impossible to know what may
be using a pointer to something in it. If you clobber the memory, what
comes down next will be unpredictable! An approach used in a product I
worked on involved running through all the known system control blocks
looking for references to the "orphaned" memory: if any reference was
found obviously it isn't orphaned. If no references were found there
were three possible actions: report the finding but do nothing, ask what
to do, or clobber the memory automatically. The idea here was that you'd
use the report option for a while to get an idea of what's happening,
then change to use ask and see what happens. For instances where
allowing the memory to be clobbered did not cause any problems, those
specific circumstances would be switch to auto mode. All in all, a
distinctly non-trivial task.

Graham.

Yep, command line backup and restore (full functionality in fact) is
really useful and present in pc-bax.

There is pp support in pcbax, but I've no idea as to how many or what
type of drives are supported. Tech support is usually really fast
though so you could pop them an email and I'm sure they will tell you.

Good chance theres a compat list on their website too I'd imagine

Try the Shuttle Technology web site. The manufacture a
number of PP -> SCSI chipsets and the drivers for the
chipsets for OS/2 can be downloaded from their web
site. I don't know if the HP cable/unit you are using (sometimes
the chip is embedded in the cable, sometimes in the drive
itself) has one of their chipsets, but they are apparently used
by a lot the so-called PP devices.

Yada yada yada yada

Use ALLOCMEM.EXE, it'll do what is required, and the only "shared memory"
prob is your folders will open as slowly as right after boot, but only on the
next instance.

Don't let on to your son that you need lessons in ANYTHING. He will
discover soon enough that you know nothing at all. Remember where you heard
this, please.

Now that I have been pointed at the two lines that the WipeOut installation
left in CONFIG.SYS (that I never thought to look for, because there is no
documentation worthy of the name), it is now clear why the program wouldn't
start minimized; I have removed it from the Startup folder, which also
makes the no-shadow thing (which the update did _not_ change) moot.

Wipeout doesn't know how to suspend my monitor (a Gateway Vivitron 15),
which Blanker knows how to do. I switched from Blanker really only because
I was tired of its savers. So I am running Blanker too, now, but set for a
long time, so that it doesn't kick in until WipeOut already has, and only
suspends the monitor after an additional interval.

Subj: OS/2 is an excellent system admin OS

From: mere_mortal@my-deja.com (mz)

I've never seen anyone say this, so I'm saying it: OS/2 is an excellent
OS to have for administering a PC.

(I like it for all the other reasons folks have stated too: WPS, great
TCP/IP, configurability, 16-bit development for Wintendo and DOS, Java
dev, and yes, good apps and the ability to run the good Wintendo 16 code
that folks have abandoned because MickeSoft told them to).

BootManager gives me real OS flexibility: especially necessary when
monopolist OSs demand a C: boot.

OS/2, of course, is able to install on logical partitions.

I often need to rebuild partitions because I like to have a clean
starting point when programming. PMFDISK lets me reconfigure my
partitions quickly.

The disk format feature is fast.

With ZIP.EXE and SYSINSTX, I can have a ZIP archive of an OS/2 partition
running in seconds.

With ZIP.EXE and the W9x/WNT Emergency Diskettes, I can manage W4
partitions.

OS/2 handles huge Zipping and Unzipping operations beautifully. These
operations never seem to slow my other concurrent work (unlike on
Wintendo NT). Just recently, I unzipped a 100 MB partition archive while
copying a 150 MB archive from a Jaz cartridge. While I worked on an
IBMWorks spreadsheet to study my finances for next year. Hombre, this is
multitasking. And I was doing it on a 486 years ago, just as I'm now
doing it on a faster AMD K6 2 today.

REXX is built-in and is very useful for automating operations.

There is plenty of good freeware and shareware available for OS/2. (And
I think many now agree that there's nothing wrong with purchasing
shareware or using freeware utilities. Some still want pretty MickeySoft
pulp and plastic from a store shelf. They are the ones with needle
tracks on their arms.)

Yes, there are many things in OS/2 that I'd like to see updated. I'm not
anxious about it.

NO OTHER OS has given me the value that OS/2 has. It seems MickeySoft
has a legal hammer-lock on OS/2, so IBM can't do much with it. I think
MickeySoft's eagerness to keep the Cinderella in rags is an indication
of how ugly a stepsister MickeySoft really is.

Stan, Give Bocasoft a break here for the installation... it used to be a
commercial product from a company that went belly-up thanks to IBM's
wonderful marketing of OS/2 to the home consumer. The developers were nice
enough to put the program into the public domain and someone zipped up the
disks and uploaded them to hobbes. I was already to upload the SAVEDSKF disk
images to hobbes (I had been communicating with one of the developers on
Compuserve and knew it was about to go public domain) when someone beat me to
it with the zipped images. Of course, the SAVEDSKF images would've prevented
all of these problems as the disk label is restored along with the disk
contents.

Bocasoft was SUPPOSED to release the source code too, but I never saw it
released anywhere :-(

Actually, it's an internal SCSI Travan-4 drive. Not that that's
particularly relevant here, anymore.

Bravo, all good points; but, especially the Cinderella observation.

I think Mr Bill's animus towards OS/2 results from two facts
which haunt him to this day:

1. OS/2 is the best work MS ever produced.
2. MS was not good enough to finish the product.

Guido

I was remarkably unimpressed with Shuttle Technology when I found that
their driver for the Syquest EZflyer parallel-port drive (although this
is IDE-to-PPort, I believe) allocates only 16MB of RAM to OS/2, with any
surplus being available as a swap area only. I was still less impressed
when I started peeking into the driver file with a text editor and
discovered the string: "This program requires Microsoft Windows."

OS/2 is *definitely* "finished".

I have never mentioned Bocasoft, although I suppose that's what "the
programmers" means. I should have made it clearer that I was referring to
whoever "zipped it up" and made it available on public D/L sites. Only an
airhead could have neglected to put into the Zip file such details as the
string that the installation program wants to see on the installation
diskettes, among other things described below.

From: "Rade Popovic" <rascho@nospam.iname.com>

Hi!

Here is my problem. I am using Warp3. With COM.SYS FaxWorks Lite and
VoiceDialer can comunicate with modem (dial phone number) but with
SIO.SYS both of this programs fail to comunicate with modem. Injoy and
ZOC are using SIO with no problems. Does anybody know what is going on
here?

Thank you.

Subj: Lotus Smartsuite problem

From: racette@cablevision.qc.ca (Martin Racette)

Hi guys,

I have a weird problem, 1-2-3, Approach,
and Freelance, all sotp working together
(I mean at about the same time), and all
have a different symptom:

1-2-3 can't find a DLL, that is there
(as is always was)

Approach can't go any further than
trying to load the startup window (the
one with the most recently opened files)

Freelance is saying that I'm out of
memory (128Mb RAM)

I tried to re-install to whole suite,
after the re-installation everything was
working fine, I had to re-boot, so I did
a normal shutdown and all three program
began to behave as before I re-installed

BTW. Approach is complaning about
PMMERGE.DLL, which is the that ship with
FP12, and was working before last week

Thank you in advance

Merci a l'avance

If so, you were one of the many bitten by FP12...IBM's last great attempt
to kill off OS/2.

I think I know what happened to you though. You have multiple problems.
The first is FP12. The second is that, one way or another, you had to
hard kill your box. In doing such, one of the DLL's Lotus uses got
corrupted. (Approach on my notebook has that problem eventhough I have
NEVER loaded it to do anything, yet WordPro runs perfectly eventhough it
has been open many many many times when FP12's wonderfull printer driver
caused me to have to hard boot.)

Boot from utility floppies created PRE FP12. Run CHKDSK C: /F:2 Do
this twice. Watch your error messages. You should see one or more DLL
files in the Lotus directory tree get set to zero block size. Corrupted
allocation entries in HPFS have a weird way of surfacing. DLL's appear to
be fine when doing a directory, but internally they are zero blocks in
size after corruption.

4 CDs for Warp 4? I installed it from one (a long time ago), and I do not
think you need anything more. The others are extras you can add after
installation if you want them.

I guess this must be a poor translation. You need three diskettes and one CD
to do the installation. The bootable diskette should be labeled "Installation
diskette", and I suppose that is the one the system is asking for. The others
are "Diskette 1" and "Diskette 2". Unless there is a problem with your
hardware, this should be what you boot from after the drive has been prepared
for installation by FDISK. Do NOT choose "easy installation" or whatever it is
called. Make a suitable boot partition (some 200-300 MB) and format it as
HPFS, leave the rest of the drive as one partition for data and applications
(also to be formatted as HPFS).

If the CD-ROM drive is not supported out of the box, or if the disk you
install to is not a SCSI drive and bigger than 2GB, you will need to get one
or more updated device drivers. The Warp 4 install program has been known to
give wrong error messages when it cannot deal with the disk or CD-ROM drives.

Just a minor footnote to add here. There used to be a "make
your own screensaver" module included with the retail pkg.
From something I recall seeing in the newsgroups or on CS, a
while back, this was supposedly removed by the developer
due to some conflicts with Warp 4. I recently happened to
acquire a retail pkg. of the product, circa ver. 1.3 (e.g.,
pretty old), and it is there. Since I still have a Warp 3
partition that I use for maintenance, I had thought to experi-
ment with this, but neither UNPACK nor UNPACK2 seems able to
extract the stuff in that directory. I don't know what they
used in their installer. At the moment, I'm not terribly
enthusiastic about backleveling the WO in that partition, via
a re-install of the program, just to find out.

If you have SET COPYFROMFLOPPY=1 set in CONFIG.SYS then it will ask for
the first two diskettes to be reinserted at the end of the first phase of
the install. This is so that it can copy the updated drivers from them to
the HD. If memory serves it asks for them in reverse order, so diskette #1
then #0 (aka the install diskette).

As of yesterday (November 22), there is another option: CDS Inc. (the
publisher of Back Again/2) released Back Again/2000. This is somewhat
different from BA/2 and now uses the same file format on the tape as
Back Again II (their product for NT); it can still read tapes made with
BA/2.

You can download a demo. version that is limited to 50MB at a time, but
you can get a free unlocking key by e-mail that will permit backups of
unlimited size (for a limited time, I assume).

I still have problems with this version, but I think they are something
to do with my PCI-bus timing or with the driver for the SCSI adapter.

There is still an even fancier version that permits manipulation of
individual tapes in an autoloader.

Just downloaded it last night. Still awaiting an unlock key so that I
can try a full backup. I also asked if I could upgrade from BA/2 Pro
to BA/2 Server for $99. I still have an autoloader that I have never
been able to afford software for.

Subj: SysInfo/2 new release is comming soon...

From: "CUS_ADM" <someone@microsoft.com>

Dear Friends!
My work is going on. I will try to plase my new version of SysInfo/2 (PM
selfmade clone of wellknown NU 3.0 for Win 95/NT SysInfo ) into HOBBES soon.
Version number will be 0.50. Now you can download SysInfo v 0.038
(ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/util/system/sysinfo0038.zip)
This is a list of enchansements and differences from current (0.038)
version:
1)First page (Total info) is allmost compleate (Dos Support - corrected,
FixPack&Build Level - added, Multimedia&CDROM - addded, HDDs info - added)
2)2nd page (Memory Info) - refresh is added
3)Problems with opening of readonly *.INI files that prevent SysInfo/2
to start - corrected
4)Last page (Device tree) - allmost done. Information is shown in Win95
style and now you can find all info about any device you selected + total
resource usage summary (IRQ, DMA, Ports, etc.) - also like in Win 95

    The SysInfo/2 project roadmap is:
    1) CPU&FPU benchmarks will be added to 1st page (may be, based on
SysBench source)
    2) Disk&CDROM benchmarks will be added to 3rd page (may be based on
diskbench source)
    3) "Details" buttons will be added to all page (to display, save & print
information summary in a text form)
    4) PCI devices will be displayed from PCI helper information, not from
DevManager, so you will see in Device Tree some PCI devices that is not
known/not installed in your OS/2 system.
    5) Command line parameters will be added to use SysInfo in *.cmd files
    6) MMIO information page will be compleated.
    7) All help will be written.

And also... ;-(( From SysInfo/2 v. 0.50 time limit will be added. And
from v. 0.90 (I think, after doing step 5) from the roadmap shown above )
SysInfo/2 will become a shareware program. I think, the price will be smole
and not become a problem. ;-))

Now, I ask you to try my current SysInfo/2
(ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/util/system/sysinfo0038.zip) to find some
bugs not listed in corrected list shown above. I am interesting in testing
my SysInfo/2 on new CPU (Pentium II >400Mh, Athlon, Pentium III) and on a
new VideoCards (all that are supported by SDD Beta 9). Please, take part in
beta testing phase! Taking part in this phase will garantee you a free
ordering of SysInfo/2 in future.
Also you are wellcome to do national translation!

Best Regards, Alexey Smirnov aka Elf Tingol.

GammaTech and FM/2 contain HD optimizers.
You may need to run them from a floppy so that the partions are not
inuse.

From: racette@cablevision.qc.ca (Martin Racette)

Hi guys,

Roland told me how to find out if I have
a corrupted DLL in the smartsuite dirs,
I did it but to no avail, it didn't find
any thing corrupted, so how do I get i
back to a working state, and don't tell
me to re-install I did it at least 4
time already (and losing all thedekstop
folder set-up and my smartmasters).

I can make Word Pro and Organizer to
work but I also need Approach and 1-2-3
nad Freelance (the most important one
are 1-2-3 and approach for the
administration of the bussiness)

BTW. this is version 1.1 nad Warp is
running FP12, and they did work
eversince FP12 got out until last week

Did you have the installer modify CONFIG.SYS? Specifically, are the

Others have suggested a couple of programs. I've used GammaTech myself,
and it works well. BUT -- HPFS partitions, unlike FAT, rarely
defragging. Unless you are experiencing significant disk thrashing, you
may just wish to leave your disk alone.

I do not think that you can both base your benchmark code on the Sysbench
source _and_ make it shareware. The original source was donated to the
OS/2 community by Henrik Harmsen on the understanding that it be freeware.

Dear Martin!
This error mean, that some of your *.NIF files in \IBMCOM\*.* directory
(may be a *.NIF file, that describe your Network Board ) are marked
ReadOnly. You can test my program if you find that *.NIF and correct the

From: b1chkc20@sympatico.ca (Denis Masson)

Hi!

I operated several years on OS/2 (Warp 3). After my system crashed and
I was unable to get any help from IBM, I unfortunately had to transfer
to Windows.

My problem is that, while on OS/2, I archived important files using
BACKUP. Now, I must retrieve some of these files, and I am unable to
do so on the Windows platform.

Would any of you be kind enough to receive this information (approx.
2.1 1.44 diskettes) through email, unpack it, zip it and email it back
to me?

Thank you!

From: stefanj@gte.net (Jason Stefanovich)

I have received a new entry from Vesa Jskelinen,
A Joystick driver that has support for the Gravis Gamepad Pro.
Also, check out Vesa's proposal for an extended joystick
standard under OS/2.

MAMERun Joystick Device Driver Contest.

What is it?

Write your own joystick device driver for OS/2 and you could win $100
plus valuable prizes and earn the respect and gratitude of OS/2
gamers around the world! With the many new games available and the
advance of game controllers there arises a need for a better
joystick device driver than IBM's advanced joystick device driver.
Support for new controller features, such as 8+ buttons, will greatly
enhance the OS/2 gaming experience for gamers as well as
developers.

For rules and other information check out:

  http://home1.gte.net/stefanj/contest.htm

I am looking for additional sponsors for this contest. If you would
like to contribute please go to:

I too have an autoloader. So far I have mostly run BA/2 from a batch
file and ejected a tape and skipped to the next one at appropriate
points in the procedure, but I like the idea of being able to use the
autoloader as a random-access device for only an extra $50; previously,
I think, it was at least $100 extra.

I've noticed some typos ("directly" instead of "directory" in one place)
in the docs. and on-line help. And the "speed" indicator does not reset
the clock at the beginning of the "compare" phase, so the speed reading
is ridiculously low. I've reported it, but they tell me that it is WAD
(working as designed); it's dumb (IMO), but I could live with it.

and then edit the config.sys because something was left. I don't remember
what. Then I ran Checkini, booted and reinsalled.

A demo is available at ftp://ftp.bmtmicro.com/bmtmicro/gulite20.zip

I don't recall what features are not available in the demo version, so
in fact you may not have the HPFS defragging capability with the demo
version.

A full version is available from BMT Micro.

BACKUP doesn't compress the files, it just stores them. You use
RESTORE.EXE to restore them. OS/2's BACKUP is compatible with RESTORE
in MS/IBM DOS 5 - 6.xx. So, if you've got a copy of DOS 5 or 6 or you
know someone who does you can use RESTORE from one of them in a DOS
session to recover the files.

From: Jim Danvers <jim.danvers@mindex.com>

Hi guys...

I just installed Warp 3 (blue spine) and am trying (hoping) to get audio
running on this box - it has a Creative Labs Sound Blaster PCI 128 card in
it and I have not been able to locate any info on getting it running as
yet. I'm dual booting this box @present w/Win95 and the audio card works
fine.

Anyone have any pointers or suggestions?

Thanks in advance....

I doubt that this will help you but I found a solution to one aspect of
running two audio cards with windozes98 and OS/2 (W31 and Linux too).

I have two sets of amplified speakers. So I can use to two output lines
(front and rear) of a SoundBlaster Live under W98. I use a PAS16 for
OS/2. The problem was playing audio CD's under the different os's.

Solution: My CDROM has a digital out and an analog out. I use the
digital out for the SBLive and the analog out for the PAS16.

Good luck, unless it comes with OS/2 drivers you are
out of luck. There are very few PCI devices that
comes with them.
