PC Magazine has a pretty fair collection of ratings at their site.

Well, for now the solution will be, I yank my Millenium back from Dad. He

But thanks for help. This is educating.

Subj: Matrox Monitor Infofile wanted

From: Andreas Bertram <uzs993@uni-bonn.de>

Hi,

I'm using a Matrox G400 with 2.31.095beta drivers. Now I want to use
BNC-wiring to my monitor NEC Multisync FP1350. This means I have to
deactivate VESA-DDC and select a monitor manually.

Unfortunately, my monitor model is not included in the matrox monitor
selection list, nor is any generic 115kHz Monitor.

Matrox Support told me I should try getting help from any newsgroups, if
editing mga.mon file is too hard for me - it is, so now I'm here :)

Can anybody help me by sending the needed lines for the info-file?

Bye, Andy

Hi there..

If you also run win95/98..

If your monitor is listed? copy it into the OS/2 mga.mon file

if not setup a user defined monitor setting...

then copy that into your OS/2 mga.mon file

when you open mga settings it will ? ought to be there..

select it; it will then show up... works here Mil ll

Andreas -

There is another approach. Example: I have a first-generation
Millennium. My monitor (Iiyama MT-9017) has very conservative
settings in the mga.mon file. The best the MGA selection for this
monitor will give me is 1280x1024x8bppx75 Hz. The monitor and board
are capable of more. I simply selected the SNI 1706 ergonomic
refresh, which gives 1280x1024x24bppx84Hz. If you happen to have an
XF86Config for your monitor you can read it, look through mga.mon and
get a good idea of which monitor to pick.

Playing around with monitor settings can, as noted in XF86Setup, do
physical damage to your monitor. When I was fooling with monitor
settings my hand was always near the 'off' switch in case the monitor
became upset or confused. However, I have had no trouble with this
setting in >2 yr of continuous, and I mean 24/7, operation.

From: Ted@see.my.sig (No spam, please)

I'm in the process of upgrading my computer, which will include a new
video card. From what I've read, the Matrox Millennium G400 would seem
to be the best choice, since I use both OS/2 and Win95 and Matrox
seems to provide good OS/2 driver support (a rarity these days).

Are there other choices I might want to consider? And are there any
quirks with the G400 and its OS/2 driver I should be aware of before I
start the upgrade (I have an Asus P5A-B mobo with an AMD K6-2/400,
which I might soon upgrade to a K6-3/450)?

I'd say go for it. I'm using the G400 Dual Head card right now.

I was running the old 4M Mystique before this and all I did was make
sure I had installed the 2.31 driver, removed the Mystique, plugged in
the G400 and, I was off and running. No changes to anything made, no
reset to VGA, nothing. It just worked! Can't beat that.

FWIW, I run a FIC 503+ board and AMD K6-2/350 with 128 RAM.

What fixpack do you have installed? The GRADD drivers require
at least fixpack 5?. Install FP 10 or 12 if you don't have FP 5 at
least.

Did you reset your system to VGA before you did the install
of the GRADD driver? Press Alt-F1 at the "OS/2 boot blob"
and pick the "Reset to VGA choice".

That SINGLEQ$ trap is usually a result of not re-setting the video
to VGA before installing a GRADD driver.

here's my work-around...

1. install the nvidia driver,
2. then install sdd ( www.scitechsoft.com ).
3. change c1=sddgradd to c1=nvgradd in the config.sys
4. set the RR via the sdd tools...

I haven't tried it yet although I have tried mixes of nVidia's gradd and SDD/2
... Maybe it will work for you. ( Beta 10 of Sdd/2 is due soon)

I'm not sure. Compare the two different
system.ini files found in your OS2/MDOS/WINOS2
sub-directory. You should see two lines in the
very first section giving the names of the video
drivers for both full screen and seamless. They
are:

display.drv=
sdisplay.drv=

You should notice a change in the drivers as you
change video resolutions. The actual drivers
xxxxx.drv are stored in the OS2\MDOS\WINOS2\SYSTEM
sub-directory.

Now having said that I checked my system and this
all works with my old S3 based video card. With
my new Matrox G400 I only see one driver. Soooo,
it may be a function of the video card if this
technique will work or not.

Did that, the current BIOS version is 1.5.

I had tried removing all files left over from the install of the old
Elsa card, editing CONFIG.SYS, then running SETVGA to restore plain VGA
mode. (I've done this sort of thing a few times before.) But to no
avail: apparently SETVGA sometimes fails, especially with older drivers.

I finally wiped the partition and reinstalled Warp 3 Connect with an
ancient VGA-only card, then put in the Matrox and installed the 2.31.100
driver. Lo and behold, I finally have 1152x864x32 @ 75 Hz.

Thanks for helping out.

This works for me with the onboard S3 Trio3D on my IBM PC 300PL. Tested
the SCitech driver, and it worked fine too.

The virge gradd is faster.

The only thing I can say is that there must have been something from
the ELSA card that imbedded itself in the system.

BTW, you should have been able to do the fresh install with the G400.
Warp 4 would have treated it as plain VGA.

In any case, nice to see you got it working. It's a nice card.

Hi...

Has anyone successfully setup an Nvidia Diamond Viper V770D AGP in OS/2
Warp 4.0 / Fixpack 12? I downloaded the OS/2 drivers from the Nvidia
site, followed the instructions included with the drivers, they were
copied to the \OS2\dll\ directory, and the install program said that
OS/2 must be shutdown or restarted in order to use the new drivers. I
restarted OS/2, but the VGA video setting remained [640*480*very few
colours]. Could the problem be that it is an AGP card????

Hardware Breakdown:
Dell Precision 210
PIII 450 Mhz
128 Mb SD-Ram
13.3 Gb Hdd
Diamond Viper V770D 32Mb [AGP]
3Com - 10/100 Mb NIC

I have tried 3 times, a couple different ways, to no avail.

Does anyone know the trick to get the drivers to work? :o)

Any help would be great!

Thanks

The release 11 drop just made the ftp site as sdd-os2-7.0.0-b11.exe.
RIVA chipset support is included and the refresh rate is now
selectable from the System icon along with resolution and color depth.

From: maxikins@os2bbs.com (Mark Klebanoff)

I just installed SDD beta 11 over top of beta 9. Although the readme
file said you could do that, on the re-boot I got an error that said
unsupported pm_imports input called! please re-compile

I reset to VGA and beta 11 installed and booted OK.

However, when I went into the config utility and tried to set to
1024x768 by 16 bit, 100hz, when I exited the config program I got a
corrupted screen. I got that with multiple different resolutions,
color depths and refresh rates. On rebooting I couldn't get the
driver out of basic VGA.

I re-installed beta 9 and things are back to normal.

I have a PII-300, IDE system with Daniella's drivers, and a Matrox
G200.

I guess it's back to the drawing board on this one.

I too installed Beta 11 yesterday, but instead of installing over the
currently installed drivers, I reset to VGA first (call me old fashioned if
you like, but it sure helps when playing with video drivers). I also checked
out the Scitech news server to see if anyone else had had problems with the
drivers.

I then ran the installation program, selected the 'Custom' route, but during
the install I received a SYS3175 type message, but after clearing the message
the install continued ok. I let the install program reboot my system.

Having read articles on the Scitech news server, I knew what was wrong when I
rebooted and everything still looked like VGA. Changed to the C:\SDD\DISK
directory and ran SETUP SDD. Rebooted again and now everything is fine.

The only problems I have found are minor screen repainting issues ie: when
you drag a window around the screen, it leaves bits behind. Not a problem
since if you move the window over them again it clears them. This doesn't
happen all the time either so I can live with it :-)

FYI, I have a Matrox G200 AGP, Dual PII 400MHz and am my screen resolution is
set to 1152 x 864 x 16million @ 85Hz.

You probably don't want to know this, but .... it's OK here.

PII-450, IDE but with IBM's drivers, Matrox MGA G200 AGP 8MB, Warp4,
with an older Philips 17" monitor at 1280x1024x16 @ 75Hz, which is as
much as it can do.

For reasons purely of experimentation I'd recently uninstalled
the SDD Beta9 package and re-installed the Matrox drivers. Before
starting the new SDD7B11 install I did the old-fashioned thing and
uninstalled the MGA drivers and reverted to VGA on reboot. From
there using the "custom" option the only glitch in the process of
installing the new beta was that despite changing the desired install
directory from the default (C:\sdd) to my actual boot drive (H:\sdd),
the utility objects in the SDD folder were all still pointing to the C
default - although the files themselves had dutifully gone into
H:\sdd. Fixed that via the respective notebooks, tuned things up, and
lo! it all worked.

The new font size, font DPI and icon size variables you can put
into config.sys are neat. All in all it's gone pretty well so far in
coexistence with a range of enhancers including NPSWPS, Object Desktop
2.0 and Dialog Enhancer; only minor or already known imperfections.

FWIW, here are my comparative results at 1280x1024x16 using SysBench
0.9.4e:

MGA drivers 159 PM-Graphics, 53 DIVE

SDDB9 130 PM-Graphics, 174 DIVE

SDDB11 129 PM-Graphics, 172 DIVE

Hi Hannes.

IBM does not seem to use S3Trio3D/2X (86C362) in its PC's.
In case of S3Trio3D (86C365) that is in IBM PC's you have three options:
native S3 driver
virge gradd
Scitech SDD

I prefer S3 driver, because of much better support for Win-OS/2. Are you
able for example to start a seamless Win-OS/2 session when you are running
Netscape with both gradd or SDD drivers. And the font size in Win-OS/2... .

You can get the latest S3Trio3D driver (4.10.08) from IBM support page:
http://www3.pc.ibm.com/support
Go to your type/model page and download the driver.

PS I have not tested the SDD beta 11 yet.

Subj: agp standard video driver needed

From: Andrew Schiller <schiller2@mw.mediaone.net>

I have an SIS530 onboard video chipset. Drivers are available for all
operating systems except, of course, OS/2. I just installed WARP Server
for E-Commerce and I can't get anything better than the SVGA driver to
work and it only gives me minimal resolution. Can anyone suggest a
better driver?

Subj: Re: SDD beta 11- hiss, boo

From: maxikins@os2bbs.com (Mark Klebanoff)

I tried that, and got the drivers to install. The trouble is that the
install defaulted to c: and I had to override it to
install them on f: (my boot partition). I could set the resolution,
but couldn't get the full range of refresh rates that I got with beta
9. 11 stuck me with 85hz, but 9 could select 100. I suspect it's
still looking for something on the c: partition.

Anyway, it's still back to the drawing board for Scitech on this one

Subj: HOWTO: set H&V Freq Rate For VGA

From: Tim Martin <OS2Guy@WarpCity.com>

I've received a request for assistance from a Warp 3 user.
It may be a real stumper because I sought help from some
of the OS/2 community's finer minds and no advice has
been received (thus far, they could be busy!).

What follows is the OS/2 user's description of trying to
get his monitor to work with Warp 3. I've advised him
on all the general routine steps for setting different horizontal
& vertical frequency rates for his VGA monitor but those
have not worked. The problem: how to change the H&F
frequencies from OS/2's standard 60Hz to 81X80Hz. There
must be an easy answer and we're just not finding it. Please
take a look at what he reports below. Your suggestions
will be appreciated. Thanks.

(Tim Martin, Warp City)

======== Text of User's Message ========
Dear Tim,

I was hoping you might help me solve a problem. I have a
specially made VGA card and monitor (described below)
that works with Win9x just fine even with safe mode.

I cannot start OS/2 to a viewable mode except by using the
install disks and pressing F3 on disk 3. At this point there
is no REXX or graphics at all.

Booting from the hard drive gets frequencies not supported
by the card and monitor. My monitor is set to operate at
81Khz Horiz. and 80Hz Vert. OS/2 appears to run Alt-F1 F3
maint mode at 60Hz.

I have adjusted two files that seem to contain the right info
but do not seem to be read in. They are svgadata.pmi and
monitor.dif. I have several bit editors, Norton's Diskedit
and others to make any special changes at specific areas.
I would rather not stoop to editing bits of dll's or exe's
if possible. I desire to get the maint mode to work at the higher
frequencies (i.e. 640x480 @ 81Khz & 80Hz). THEN I will be able
to install the drivers and adjust the settings for SVGADATA.PMI
and even monitor.dif if needed.

I have a Spacewalker dual MB with 366 Celerons (370). I have
tried 366, but it was no better than the 550 that I run normally.
The video AGP card is made by Mirage, is called Diablo 3D
and contains a Savage 3D chip on it. I have the drivers from
hobbes, but need a graphical screen with the video card
running to install the drivers properly. The monitor is a 20D10
Sun "fixed" frequency. I have experimented and found max
range is 58Khz-83Khz horiz and 63Hz - 150+ Hz vert. I
understand that normal VGA is 31.5Khz & 60Hz. That is too
slow to view for me to begin the install of drivers.

I have tried several different drivers and each of the install
methods all to no avail to date. All require a usable graphics
mode to complete the install process. I have built and rebuilt
the svgadata.pmi file in dos and added entries to monitor.dif,
neither seems to be paid any attention during Alt-F1 F3 boot.
The normal boot will not be available untill I get the drivers
installed, but I need graphics to do that.

=========================

Again, thanks for any help or advice you may be able to offer.

Tim...
