This same error, an unhandled DosRaiseException error, also plagues the
PowerBASIC IDE and PBD debugger under, what I think, are serious
problems for a very few of their users. I've not noticed that it is,
apparently, related to CPU speed. The errors are not found in the vast
majority of user efforts, as best I can tell, but are more present for
some of those whom do programs of upwards of about 14,000 statements,
make use of User Defined Types, use EMS memory and make use of more than
one pre-compiled Unit directly in Main and/or a library of them.

This failure in a DOS-VDM can and has, for me, so badly corrupted the
OS/2 system that one can't even re-open a new DOS-VDM window from the
desktop, at times, once it starts, without totally re-booting the box!

The SYS3170 errors persist even to brand new sessions!

The only other way I have seen similar happenings is while using
McAfee's SCAN for DOS in a DOS-VDM, which actually FINDS a virus! When
I close the session and re-open it, the memory portion of the SCAN
checking will find the remains of the last FOUND virus still in the same
memory space that was occupied by the previous session! A complete
reboot has been necessary then to clear the memory area, or, a load of
something else other than another immediate re-run of SCAN, which will
simply over-write the remaing ghost code snippet there.

Thus I reason, similar contamination by the PB IDE or PBD, is still
present in that same space in memory on another quick re-load, that
produces the same SYS3170 error again or .. worse ..

If you let the errors be repeatedly produced, while attempting to trace
and debug things, and then the IDE *CAN* be loaded, is left up at an idle,
where it also maxes the CPU waiting for keystrokes, it appears that the
corrupted system space can result in a complete destruction of the disk ..

I have - *TWICE* - had to rebuild a box from tape to recover from it.

I've run OS/2 since version 2.1 and since moving to Version 3 and thence
to now Warp 4 FP8, which is stable for me, this is the *ONLY*
application which has ever been this repetitively destructive to an OS/2
system outside a failed session...

I'd also appreciate a good explanation of what the error is and what
produces it, and any suggestions on where to look to cure it or suggest
a cure for the developer.

Here is my problem. I am using Warp3. With COM.SYS FaxWorks Lite and

SIO.SYS both of this programs fail to comunicate with modem. Injoy and

I believe that the error checking is done in the TCP protocol, and
thus is independent of the application.

4 CDs for Warp 4? I installed it from one (a long time ago), and I do not
think you need anything more. The others are extras you can add after
installation if you want them.

I guess this must be a poor translation. You need three diskettes and one CD
to do the installation. The bootable diskette should be labeled "Installation
diskette", and I suppose that is the one the system is asking for. The others
are "Diskette 1" and "Diskette 2". Unless there is a problem with your
hardware, this should be what you boot from after the drive has been prepared
for installation by FDISK. Do NOT choose "easy installation" or whatever it is
called. Make a suitable boot partition (some 200-300 MB) and format it as
HPFS, leave the rest of the drive as one partition for data and applications
(also to be formatted as HPFS).

If the CD-ROM drive is not supported out of the box, or if the disk you
install to is not a SCSI drive and bigger than 2GB, you will need to get one
or more updated device drivers. The Warp 4 install program has been known to
give wrong error messages when it cannot deal with the disk or CD-ROM drives.

If you have SET COPYFROMFLOPPY=1 set in CONFIG.SYS then it will ask for
the first two diskettes to be reinserted at the end of the first phase of
the install. This is so that it can copy the updated drivers from them to
the HD. If memory serves it asks for them in reverse order, so diskette #1
then #0 (aka the install diskette).

I have one of those ACER FM56PVS... but no voice software for it. FAX and

of it, it is nothing but a standard modem requires no flipping drivers.
Standard Rockwell 56K/V.90 chips.

Unfortunately, they no longer ship modems with full User's Manual and it was
a pain finding a manual that would give me the full command set of the darn
thing.

Subj: DOIP with a new ISP

From: petra_rock@my-deja.com

I am trying to help my brother setup DOIP (Dial Other
Internet Providers) for a new ISP. His previous ISP
was Earthlink which provided instructions at their
web site for how to configure DOIP to dial in. (He
is switching to a local ISP because the number he was
using for Earthlink in a neighboring town which he
thought was a local call turned out to have a surcharge.)
His new ISP does not have any info on their web site
about dialing in from other OSes other than Windows,
but we thought if we just created a new entry in DOIP
specifying the proper parameters for the new ISP (DNS,
mail servers, phone number, etc.) it should work.
While it seems to dial in and establish a connection,
it doesn't complete the login sequence and eventually
times out. We are also using PPPDIAL to drive the login
sequence script, so I could customize the login response
file if I knew what the ISP server wants. (I tried
sending a "return" key repeatedly hoping it would then
come back with "login:" or something to key off of, but
no luck.)
When I called the ISP's tech support, I explained the
problem and said we were not running Windows and needed
to know what the login script should look for. He seemed
clueless as to what I was asking, but said he would contact
someone and call us back. When he called back, all he
would say is, "Is your dialer using PAP or CHAP protocol?
Our server runs NT and we only support PAP."
I can't find anything in the DOIP online help that
says whether it uses PAP or CHAP, but my hunch is that
that is not the problem and I just need to know the
login sequence to customize the script used by PPPDIAL.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what to try, or
what to ask the tech support guy so he will understand
what I really want to know? Thanks!

Mark

I've received this same type of inquiry a couple of
times. Once from a Warp City member and the
other from a non-member (it may have been Les
Halter at: LesHalter@NOSPAMearthlink.net. He
may be able to give you some insight if you contact
him directly, remove the NOSPAM from his address).

In both cases I referred them to look into InJoy at:
http://www.fx.dk/injoy

If I recall correctly InJoy's site has information on
PAP and CHAP PPPDial scripts. You may need to
actually use InJoy but the download version should work.

Hope this helps.

Go to Hobbes and download Injoy 1.1 or the latest version. It will
solve the problem.

Subj: other dialer vs ibm dialer

From: Mat Serwas <serwas@mindspring.com>

Greetings,

I have about had it with ibm' s 'other dialer' [had to switch
to it when I refused to join AT&T when the bought IBMNet.

I tried several times to trick IBM dialer but I"m too dumb
for it.

Anyone know how to use it with Mindspring?

The slattach version is dated 1995 and I've it never
was changed with I upgraded to warp V4 fp12.

I really like that IBM dialer.
Hope you don't get confused which dialer is which.

Any help is appreciated very much.

Mat
