Subj: Desktop vanished

From: akup@loc.gov (Aaron Kuperman)

My desktop vanished. On booting I get a message that it can't find my
desktop in the OS2.INI file (I can't find the file, even a search of my
hard disk for "OS2.INI" won't locate it), and I get a "temporary" desktop
and an OS/2 Window. I managed to make a de facto desktop out of the
aforementioned temporary desktop which I renamed and saved, but I can't
make it the "official" desktop (meaning I have to find and reactivate it
on booting). I'm running Warp 4.0 with Object Desktop preinstalled (I
don't fully understand it yet but I think it might be part of the cure).
Except for the desktop, nothing appears damaged (i.e. all programs work
when called up from a full screen, and all other folders have been
retrieved intact and put into my temporary desktop).

I believe the cause was a very bright 12 year playing with the system
settings (bright but not understanding why you backup before
experimenting), though he claims it was caused by a 2-year confusing the
desktop with her "keyboard basher" program.

The latest version of Henk Kelder's CHECKINI might save the day. Getting
restored from a "lost Desktop ID" has been a big problem for a long time,
and Henk's been working on it. It requires at least two things to happen:
Getting your old \DESKTOP to be of the class "WPDesktop" and assigning it
the ID <WP_DESKTOP>.

Download CHECKINI in the WPTOOLS package at Henk's Homepage:

	http://www.os2ss.com/information/kelder/

and get EABrowse while you're there, too.

C'mon. That's like Ronald Reagan blaming Oliver North (the disgrace to the
Force) for Irangate.

(You can fool me, but not the company spies.)
