Hello Tom,

AFAIR it isn't possible. The X-Server needs a MDI/Fullscreen mode for
running CDE. PMX is just capable of running individual applications.
We switched to Hummingbirds Exceed for this reason years ago. If you're
looking for a free solution, you may have some luck with XFree86 ( not sure ).

The route problem was solved by the testcase 5.5/5.4 stack update for
multi-homed systems. I did forget the fact that default was never changed
back correctly after I exited Injoy. I did contact FX and they were helpful.
They pointed out that the IBM stack was causing the problem - they were
right.

From: ve3tjd@rac.ca.nospam (Tedd Doda)

Greetings:

I have a DOS based Ham Radio BBS program that
I would like to integrate Telnet into. This program
(COMTCP.exe) looks like it might do what I want.

The only info I can find is the online help:

***************

D:\>comtcp -??

COMTCP Version 2.1.1: IBM TCP/IP Version 2.1.1 for DOS

USAGE: comtcp -? | -?? | [-o] [-c <comport>] [-p <tcpport>] [-t <timeout>]
              <host> <doscmd>

WHERE: <host> - Name of the host or internet address.
        <doscmd> - DOS command initiated when a connection is made to
                      the remote host.
OPTIONS:
-?               Display help message.
-??              Display detailed help message.
-o Instruct COMTCP not to use the TELNET protocol.
-t <timeout> Specify a timeout value in seconds. Default is 3.
-c <comport> Specify the DOS communication port to intercept. Valid port
                   numbers are 1, 2, 3, and 4, which correspond to COM1, COM2,
                   COM3, and COM4.  The default is 1.
-p <tcpport> Specify port associated with the connection. The default
                   TELNET port is 23.
**************

I would like to hear from anyone that has used this
utility. Some examples on how to set it up would
be appreciated!!

The only immediate way is to change to a different network card....

Try a Realtek RTL8139 chipset based card. Their drivers
work under WSeB SMP. That's the card I am running right now.

Longer term...

Allocate a Trapdump partition and put a TRAPDUMP statement
in the config.sys file and find someone at 3COM or IBM to look
at the problem to find the cause and fix it.

Subj: Basic TCP/IP Plumbing Question

From: "Casey Bralla" <NewsReader@NerdWorld.org>

How does a TCP/IP sender regulate the speed with which it sends packets?

Let's say I'm getting a web page from a high speed server on a T3 line, which
eventually get's choaked down by the 28.8 KBPS modem to my ISP. So the
server starts sending a gigabyte/sec of data through the T3 line, and
somewhere the data overloads the plumbing, and dribbles out to me at 28.8.

How does the server know to slow down sending packets?

From: "Robert A. Munro" <ramunro1@ix.netcom.com>

I'm having trouble getting two 3C905B-TX NICs working under OS/2 V4 with
FixPak 12 and MPTS updates WR08423 and WR08424 applied. The same
software works with a 3Com Etherlink III PCMCIA NIC in my Thinkpad, but
not with 3C905Bs in my deskside tower. Configuration details and
problem message are outlined below. Any help will be much appreciated.

NIC 1 in physical PCI slot 3, BIOS detected as Slot 9 IObase CC00x IRQ

NIC 2 in physical PCI slot 4, BIOS detected as Slot 6 IObase D000x IRQ
07, EA 0050040A9424

C:\ibmcom\protocol.ini reads:

[PROT_MAN]
       DRIVERNAME = PROTMAN$
[IBMLXCFG]
       tcpip_nif = tcpip.nif
       EL90XIO2_nif = EL90XIO2.NIF
       EL90XIO2_nif2 = EL90XIO2.NIF
[tcpip_nif]
       DriverName = TCPIP$
       Bindings = EL90XIO2_nif,EL90XIO2_nif2
[EL90XIO2_nif]
       Slot = 9
       NetAddress = "025004803E0C"

       Slot = 6
       NetAddress = "0250040A9424"
       DriverName = EL90X2$
<eof>

The sample protocol.ini distributed with driver EL90X.OS2 requires the
NetAddress to begin with "02" thus the overrides.

When OS/2 boots, the NICs are recognized (according to messages), but
LANTRAN.LOG contains the following message:

"PRO0028: A hardware failure occurred when the program tried to bind
TCPIP_NIF to EL90XIO2_NIF."

The PC-interface light on my cable modem is green, and the NIC 10Mb Link
indicator is green; hardware seems to be OK.
No other message, error sense data, or information is provided. Can
anyone tell me what might be going wrong here?

TIA,
Robert

Workaround:
1. clear memory and disk cache in Netscape
2. click on the binary file
3. wait the end of download in Netscape window
4. go to \netscape\user\...\cache and look for a file with the right
size
5. copy the file and give the right name

working and configuration can be changed manually by editing scripts.
So I think this is java problem. Here is (what I think to be) error
which is written when starting "TCP/IP Configuration (Local)":

Notebook.createDataObjects() - NullPointerException caught by client
communication with server

When I start Configuration program all list boxes are empty, actually
everything is empty and there is nothing to change (as I have said
earlier all configuration files are there and TCPIP is working
normally). Here is result of "java -fullversion":

JAVA.EXE full version "JDK 1.1.8 IBM build o118-19991026 (JIT enabled:
javax V3.5-IBMJDK1.1-19991026)".

Has anybody else had this problem?

if you like mtel, then you'll also like nftp ( http://www.ayukov.com )

This thread is being broadcast on a large number of threads many of which are
probably not appropriate but one of the most obvious which is,
comp.os.os2.com,
is not among them.

Anyway, you didn't mention if your modem is PNP or not. I have a 3Com/USR
Internet Fax modem (Not Voice) and it works fine as a PNP modem with the CMOS
PNP
enabled. If yours is PNP, see the readme file that is in the root directory of
your boot drive (section 6) for instructions.

This is using Netscape v4.6. If I try Lynx, I get:

There seem to be **sssssoooo**** many sites I can't access, www.palm.com,

Would this problem be related to me running Netscape under OS/2, or is there
something in my config which can be changed. I can't help feeling there is a
MS IIS blocker out there somewhere preventing my access.

However, if you don't have that DSL connection, it's the pits. Most
of these so-called web page authors never try their page with the
barbed wire connection I have. I have complained to Lotus more than
once. IBM is just as bad, and I can't seem to get their attention
(even though we peddle in excess of $40 mil a year for them as a
business partner).

I have connected two machines running Warp 3(fp 40) and Warp 4 (fp 10?) with

fast (600 KB/s) from Warp 3 to Warp 4 but very slowly (15 KB/s) in the
opposite direction, independent of which machine runs the server (OS/2-ftpd)
and which runs the client. What is the reason fro this and what can be done
about it?

Subj: local LAN connection problems with 2 WARP4 systems

From: "Lionel C. Abrahams" <abrahams@sparc.isl.net>

I have been fighting this problem for the past few days, and I
can't seem to resolve it.

I have 2 systems hooked up on a home lan using a 10/100 hubs.

System A is running WARP4 with FP12 and TCPIP 4.1 and PEER
System B is running WARP4 with FP12 and TCPIP 4.1 and PEER
System B  also runs W98, per wife's requirements :-(

Systems A  &  B communicate OK when System B is running W98

When both are running WARP, that's when I have problems;

What works from system A:
 - Ping A and B from system A
 - File and Print sharing from system A
 - FTP to/from B from system A
 - When logged on network, right click on desktop shows
   entries for start sharing, stop sharing, update share and
   manage access

What does not work from system A:
  - Nothing that I can find out

What works from system B:
 - Ping A and B from system A

What DOES NOT work from system B:
 - File and Print sharing from system B
 - FTP to/from A from system B come back with NO NETWORK CONNECTION
error message
 - After workstation logging (says successful), right click
   on desktop shows NO entries for start sharing, stop sharing,
   update share and manage access
 - Another anomaly:
   Clicking on the File and Print Resource Browser in the Network
   folder does not open up the window. The mouse pointer changes to

   busy for a fraction of a second before reverting back to normal.

   Also opening its properties does not show anything under the
   NETWORK tab, it still displays whatever tab was last displayed!

What I have done to System B with no change:

Removed and reinstalled TCPIP, MPTN, PEER and all relatives fixes
from FP12 CD, including all network fixes/updates.

Sorry for the long append, but hopefully that will help show me my
errors and provide me with the fix.

TIA

I think that from FP11, TCPCFG2 is the one to use. I am at FP12
and TCPCFG pops up a message saying that NFS is not installed, OK
bring up another message saying that PMX is not install, OK bring
up a blank TCPIP configuration notebook.

TCPCF2 starts a JAVA applet to do the TCPIP configuration. When I
updated my TCPIP to 4.1 (from the ZIP file from IBM), it also
updated my MPTS to the required level. It also required that both
Netscape and Java be at a certain level before installing.

Hope this helps :-)

In fact you can use the -b parameter to specify an alternate banner. If you
omit the banner name it won't print any.

Yeah, that's sorta confusing. if you want to specify a file for it to
use a banner, you use the same command, but with the file name
appended. Without a file name, it just doesn't print any banner at all.

        Without knowing the specifics of WinNat what follows is just a guess,
but it is the way that I configured my internal machines to connect to the
net with an OS/2 machine doing the NAT using the InJoy Firewall product from
FX Communications, of InJoy Dialer fame.

        Set up an internal tcp/ip network using the nonrouteable addresses
192.168.0.x (for a max 254 node class C network). Set the router
address for your Warp machine to the internal address of your NAT machine.
Set up the hostname and domain name of your Warp machine to whatever you
want to call it, doesn't go out on the net so it doesn't matter. For the
DNS machines you will have to look in te documentation of WinNat. Some
implementations want the address of your ISP's DNS and some use the internal
address of the NAT machine. Set up Mail servers, etc. to what your ISP
documents for mail, news proxy, etc.

        This should get you going.

Are you running TCPBeui on both systems? Have you tried straight
Netbios/NETBeui? Is your IP address for system B the same under
both Win 98 and Warp? How about subnetmask and routing tables?

You might want to post the protocol.ini and the \mptn\bin\setup.cmd
from both Warp systems.

Subj: Re: Configuring a Warp machine as a client for a Win95 NAT server

From: "David Thacker" <David @ Thackernet.com>

This probably won't help you, but I thought you might find it useful anyway.
I use Win2000 Pro RC1 as my "server" machine, which connects to the internet
via modem. Win2000 and Win98SE have a built in NAT/DHCP function called
Internet Connection Sharing. With this enabled in W2K, my Warp 4 machine on
the home lan can use this internet connection by configuring Warp to use
DHCP. The W2K ICS acts as a DHCP server for the Warp machine. Works like a
charm. The W2K machine will even dial on demand if the Warp machine tries
to connect to something when the W2K machine is not connected to the
internet.

I did have one problem where the Warp machine would lose DNS service after a
while. I couldn't reach anything via hostname, but could still reach
everything by IP. So, I just manually added my ISP's DNS server addresses
to the Warp resolv2 file -- problem solved. That was back when it was on an
older stack -- up to TCPIP 4.2 now.

So, I don't know if WinNAT acts as a DHCP server or not, but you might want
to try setting your Warp machine to DHCP just for the heck of it. Or, you
may wish to buy the Win98SE Upgrade for your windows machine.

Subj: Dual DSL & Modem Connections

From: "Walter S. Rue" <wsrue@ATTGlobal.net>

In considering possible configurations that include a new DSL line, one
scenario retains the old modem line now used for Internet connections
via dialer.

Hypothetically, if I would have the DSL line on the NIC and the dial-up
line on COM2 both open and then would start Netscape v4.6, which of
these connections will it use? Nothing in Preferences that I've noticed
seems to bear on this, so I guess the TCP configuration would decide --
but it's not clear how that would work either. Actually, I think I
would prefer two Netscape icons, one for each.

By the way, I really don't know at this point why I would need both
connections. I just want to know of potential problems.

Thanks,

Subj: Re: Dual DSL & Modem Connections

From: Michael W. Cocke <cocke@catherders.com>

I have something like this going, but not exactly on purpose. Here's
what I think is happening - some of it is even confirmed.

The name server is always accessed by way of my DSL line - because the
name server addresses are explicitly set in the tcp/ip notebook.
Confirmed.

If the dialup line is connected, data is transferred via that, else the
data goes over the DSL line. Confirmed.

I suspect what happens is that the OS/2 Ip stuff first looks for
resolve2, which is set up by the dialer. if that fails, it drops back
to resolve, which is set up by the tcp/ip startup. Theory.

I didn't set out to do this, and I'm not sure why it works like this,
but this is how it works.

BTW - you CAN set up a dialin port using a regular modem and gate it to
your DSL line. I set this up for when I travel - now I don't need an
ISP at all. I was told this wasn't possible, but it wasn't even
difficult.
