Well found that the EEPROM on the NIC actually tested ok. Found the
correct diagnostics from 3COM. Tested OK.

In the process of trying to locate OS/2 disk set. I do not have the

I was told to purchase the "Navy Blue and White Box marked "with DOS

The route problem was solved by the testcase 5.5/5.4 stack update for
multi-homed systems. I did forget the fact that default was never changed
back correctly after I exited Injoy. I did contact FX and they were helpful.
They pointed out that the IBM stack was causing the problem - they were
right.

You don't have to remove/install drivers. Just click on the "Change"
button, below the Network adapters box. This way, you don't have to
remove/add protocols.

From: jknott@ibm.net (James Knott)

Q1

My Novell CNE study guide says RG-58. My local computer supply
catalog says RG-58. I have found that vendors will often increase the
price for consumers who don't know what they're doing, and who will
pay extra for a "special" product. Unless that cable has higher than
normal specs i.e. plennum rated etc., it's a marketing scam.

Your last line says it all.

Q2

Looks OK from here.

BTW, there used to be an American actor named Jim Backus. One of his
claims to fame was as the millionare on the 60's TV sitcom "Gilligan's
Island. He was also the voice of the "Mr. Magoo" cartoon character.

Subj: Basic TCP/IP Plumbing Question

From: "Casey Bralla" <NewsReader@NerdWorld.org>

How does a TCP/IP sender regulate the speed with which it sends packets?

Let's say I'm getting a web page from a high speed server on a T3 line, which
eventually get's choaked down by the 28.8 KBPS modem to my ISP. So the
server starts sending a gigabyte/sec of data through the T3 line, and
somewhere the data overloads the plumbing, and dribbles out to me at 28.8.

How does the server know to slow down sending packets?

From: "Mike Dent" <Mikedent@tesco.net>

Please help an o/s2 1.3 novice !!!

We have an old server running o/s 2 1.3 at work which has errored since a
power cut last weekend..

The server will not boot to the hard drive - it produces an error relating
to a memory address ?? It will boot to a emergency floppy and once the c:
drive has been ChkDsk'd it is accessible and all the files can be seen.

I have tried "remming" all commands in the config.sys and autoexec.bat
hoping the server will boot to c: prompt like dos but it doesnt. So I
therefore presume it may be the system files or corrupt hpfs system - ??

I admit this is the first time I have come across O/S 2 and I really havent
a clue how it works compared to win95 and dos.

Is there any way to get this beast up and running again either by copying
system files from the boot disk or by reinstalling the operating system over
the top and retaining the data already present.

Please help a desperate man !!!!

Many thanks

Mike..

REMing out the statements in the config.sys file won't help
the situation. It sounds like a file got corrupted during the
power failure.

I'd recommend re-installing the OS.

Very good question, I should also do that actually but I have no idea how it
works, even not on Linux. Can anyone please explain the idea behind ssh
tunneling with CVS?

Subj: Cisco 677 DSL Router Needed

From: "David D. Huff Jr." <huffd@nls.net>

Anybody in OS2 Land got a lead as to where I could buy the Cisco 677
router at the best prices my telco requires this make and model if I
want to run DSL. So please post ideas or suggestions where I can get
this beast. I have several sources that will sell me one for $500 but I
am shooting for $350 or less. Write me direct if needed.
TIA

I was thinking of share level security. But I'm not sure if NT
still allows this. However, the GUEST ID can be given rights to
NT or OS/2 shares and you can logon on via a startup command on OS/2
(registry enties on NT). Also, user IDs do not have to
require passwords. This should simplify things.

It's no good rem-ing everything out, it's a real operating system,
unlike DOS! If it is complaining about memory it sounds as though the
power outage clobbered the hardware: booting from a floppy may not use
enough memory to hit the bad area.

BTW, what floppy did you boot? Not a DOS one and run DOS's CHKDSK I
hope, or you may be looking for the backups before this will be working
again!

Graham.

Yikes! $350. USWest only charged me $50 for my Cisco 675.

CVS is a way to do source code controll over the net, we use it for the Odin
project. Read http://www.netlabs.org/nosa/ to get more informations about it.

Subj: Where do I find DSL information

From: judithr@primenet.com

Finally ordered DSL, should have it installed in a month or ...
soon. The company can set it up in NT, and that has security
advantages because I would only boot that when I needed a large
download or something. But, I would probably like to learn to deal
with the security issues and have it in OS/2 after running with that
speed instead of a regular modem once or twice. I am not willing to
spend a lot of time in NT just for the DSL connection.

I know many have DSL installed, is there a web page, good source for
technical information, ????? This is through a local ISP and PacBel
for a reasonable price. The ISP is willing to help, but I suspect
this newsgroup has information at least as useful as theirs.

With only one computer on most of the time, is there any reason to
get the more expensive setup with a hub and 4 connections and
built-in firewall? (2x the $cost) I do have a laptop and a peer
network with crossover cable.

Also, will I be able to use the same NIC (3com) with both the DSL
and the peer network -- not at the same time, of course.

Subj: AVM B1 ISDN & OS/2 how?

From: Herwig <hdiessner@gmx.net>

Hi there,
I just installed an AVM B1 active ISDN Card on my OS/2 machine. The
installation of the driver package provided by AVM (www.avm.de) also
succeeded and the physical device driver is loaded.
Can anyone tell me, how to configure the ISDN parameters now? I didn't
find the tool for these settings...

You should be able, and at the same time offcourse :)
Depends on what you intend to do...
The usual "non-unix" way, is to have two sets of protocols running on
the adapter... eg. netbeui and ip
The router thingy doesnt understand anything but ip, so it leaves your

netbeui on your side of the connection (=your file & print services
are not visible in any way via the internet)
This is also a very effective kinda firewall in itself... :) It does
NOT protect you from Denial of Service attacks, but it gives your
files 100% protection. Offcourse.. this is only true if you DONT run a
set of telnetd/ftpd's etc :)

I assume that the cheaper "works under NT" statement/solution defines
some strange propritary card to put in inside your PC ????

regards

Kristian

In principal, there is no reason to think that there is anything
"NT-specific" about anyone's DSL connection. Essentially, the phone line
plugs into a "DSL modem" and you plug a standard Ethernet cable into it from
your computer. Thus, as far as your computer is concerned, you're just
connected to a Ethnet network.

:>I know many have DSL installed, is there a web page, good source for

:>

I'm not sure that you will need any more information about setting up the
connection than you would do for connecting to any TCP/IP network. On the
other hand, the security issues are probably found in many places, with many
degrees of complexity represented. All you need from your ISP is: your IP
address or the DHCP server that will be issuing you an IP address on the fly;
your default gateway address; your nameserver addresses; and the addresses
for the services that the ISP provides - mail, news, etc. The TCP/IP
configuration notebook has places for all of these.

:>With only one computer on most of the time, is there any reason to
:>get the more expensive setup with a hub and 4 connections and
:>built-in firewall? (2x the $cost) I do have a laptop and a peer

:>

I guess it depends on your view of complexity; is it easier to always be
connected versus recabling everytime you want onto the net? If the former, I
would spring for the extra, although I'm not clear on what a 'built-in'
firewall hub does for you - it seems like a nice idea, but it depends on
whether you are going to try to access your "always on" machine from outside
your local network (i.e., while you're on the road). If you are going to try
that, you may find that the hub firewall is too limiting......

:>Also, will I be able to use the same NIC (3com) with both the DSL
:>and the peer network -- not at the same time, of course.
:>

Absolutely - see above

Subj: local LAN connection problems with 2 WARP4 systems

From: "Lionel C. Abrahams" <abrahams@sparc.isl.net>

I have been fighting this problem for the past few days, and I
can't seem to resolve it.

I have 2 systems hooked up on a home lan using a 10/100 hubs.

System A is running WARP4 with FP12 and TCPIP 4.1 and PEER
System B is running WARP4 with FP12 and TCPIP 4.1 and PEER
System B also runs W98, per wife's requirements :-(

Systems A & B communicate OK when System B is running W98

When both are running WARP, that's when I have problems;

What works from system A:
 - Ping A and B from system A
 - File and Print sharing from system A
 - FTP to/from B from system A
 - When logged on network, right click on desktop shows
entries for start sharing, stop sharing, update share and
   manage access

What does not work from system A:
  - Nothing that I can find out

What works from system B:
 - Ping A and B from system A

What DOES NOT work from system B:
 - File and Print sharing from system B
 - FTP to/from A from system B come back with NO NETWORK CONNECTION
error message
 - After workstation logging (says successful), right click
on desktop shows NO entries for start sharing, stop sharing,
   update share and manage access
 - Another anomaly:
Clicking on the File and Print Resource Browser in the Network
folder does not open up the window. The mouse pointer changes to

busy for a fraction of a second before reverting back to normal.

Also opening its properties does not show anything under the
NETWORK tab, it still displays whatever tab was last displayed!

What I have done to System B with no change:

Removed and reinstalled TCPIP, MPTN, PEER and all relatives fixes
from FP12 CD, including all network fixes/updates.

Sorry for the long append, but hopefully that will help show me my
errors and provide me with the fix.

TIA

Subj: IBM Coordinated Logon Client

From: Markus Stimpfl <sti@genesis.at>

Hello

we use the "IBM Coordinated Logon Client 4.2.3" since about 2 years to
logon from our NT 4.0 Clients to our OS/2 Server (Warp Server SMP).
Since about 1 month we have problems with the NT Clients to logon to the
OS/2 Domain. The first logon fails most times:
"Your access to the server has been denied. Access is not permittet at
this time of day or your account may have eypired".

When we logoff and logon a second time everything works fine. In some
cases not all logon assignments are available.

thanks a lot
Markus

Subj: Can't load secure web sites in Netscape for Win-OS/2

From: tvoltagg@home.com

I put Quicken 98 (for Win 3.1) on my OS/2 Warp 4 machine to do web banking.
The problem is that I'm behind a firewall and can't load secure websites.
I have a Warp machine peered to a win95 machine using Internet Gate.
Using Netscape for OS/2, I'm OK, but using the 16 bit Netscape
4.08 or Internet Explorer 128 bit encryption browsers, I can not load secure
sites. I have the same configuration for the 16 bit as I do for the 32 bit
Netscape browser. Both the http and socks are enabled and point to the IP
address of the cable modem machine machine at port 80 and 1080 respectively.
Has anyone solved this?

I was pulling my hair out trying to get a D-Link ISA card to work.
First with the cable modem, then just alone with my 'old' DHCP server. DHCP
just would not hook up with the server. So I put the card in the server adn
it works just peachy, what gives? I'm just courious now, its working with
the cable modem on the server (where it was gonna wind up anyways someday)

Without knowing the specifics of WinNat what follows is just a guess,
but it is the way that I configured my internal machines to connect to the
net with an OS/2 machine doing the NAT using the InJoy Firewall product from
FX Communications, of InJoy Dialer fame.

Set up an internal tcp/ip network using the nonrouteable addresses
192.168.0.x (for a max 254 node class C network). Set the router
address for your Warp machine to the internal address of your NAT machine.
Set up the hostname and domain name of your Warp machine to whatever you
want to call it, doesn't go out on the net so it doesn't matter. For the
DNS machines you will have to look in te documentation of WinNat. Some
implementations want the address of your ISP's DNS and some use the internal
address of the NAT machine. Set up Mail servers, etc. to what your ISP
documents for mail, news proxy, etc.

        This should get you going.

        Jim

OS/2 contains a good number of TCP/IP client and server apps. FTP and
FTPD for file transfer, rexec and rexecd for remote execution, telnet
and telnetd for remote terminal, lpr and lprd for printing et al. All
of the above should work with Linux. In addition, you can get X-windows
and NSF for OS/2 for additional functionality.

However, it might be easier to set up SAMBA on the Linux machine. This
is a LAN Manager (1.2?) emulator which uses Netbios over TCP/IP. Both
SAMBA and WARP networking conform to this. SAMBA is freeware and
there is even SAMBA for OS/2 if you don't want to learn the ins and outs
of both applications.

Are you running TCPBeui on both systems? Have you tried straight
Netbios/NETBeui? Is your IP address for system B the same under
both Win 98 and Warp? How about subnetmask and routing tables?

You might want to post the protocol.ini and the \mptn\bin\setup.cmd
from both Warp systems.

The problem is more basic then this, I can't get the 2 machines to connect
and I beleive it is on the os2 side that I have the problem.
Therefore I am looking for basic imfo as how to set up networking on os2 to
connect to linux, so far all I have managed to do is fry my internet
connection.

Subj: Re: Configuring a Warp machine as a client for a Win95 NAT server

From: "David Thacker" <David @ Thackernet.com>

This probably won't help you, but I thought you might find it useful anyway.
I use Win2000 Pro RC1 as my "server" machine, which connects to the internet
via modem. Win2000 and Win98SE have a built in NAT/DHCP function called
Internet Connection Sharing. With this enabled in W2K, my Warp 4 machine on
the home lan can use this internet connection by configuring Warp to use
DHCP. The W2K ICS acts as a DHCP server for the Warp machine. Works like a
charm. The W2K machine will even dial on demand if the Warp machine tries
to connect to something when the W2K machine is not connected to the
internet.

I did have one problem where the Warp machine would lose DNS service after a
while. I couldn't reach anything via hostname, but could still reach
everything by IP. So, I just manually added my ISP's DNS server addresses
to the Warp resolv2 file -- problem solved. That was back when it was on an
older stack -- up to TCPIP 4.2 now.

So, I don't know if WinNAT acts as a DHCP server or not, but you might want
to try setting your Warp machine to DHCP just for the heck of it. Or, you
may wish to buy the Win98SE Upgrade for your windows machine.
