Overflow Warpstock Crowd Bedazzled With Warped Jeopardy

Warped Jeopardy! played to a packed Warpstock theater on
Sunday with guest host Randell Flint of Sundial Systems at
the helm of this traveling OS/2 game show spectacular.

Celebrity contestants David Moskowitz, Judy McDermott and
Larry Finkelstein did their best to offer questions that
matched the OS/2 answers given by Flint. In Warped
Jeopardy!, as in the original Jeopardy television show, the
host states the answers and the guests must come up with the
correct questions.

One perplexing answer of the day, stumping all three
panelists, was "The Easiest Way To A Connected World" in the
Version Taglines category. The correct response would have
been the question "What is Warp 4?"

In the special Audience Jeopardy round, all six of the
audience contestants won Sundial product prizes with a
little help from their teammates and the celebrities.

Sundial's Warped Jeopardy! is a multimedia extravaganza
with an OS/2 theme, complete with sound, video clips and a
multimedia screen with categories and levels and, of course,
answers. "It matches our Sundial Has The Answers slogan,
and it's fun for the audience, the contestants and our
Sundial production crew," said Flint. "The audience
absolutely loves the show, and we'll continue to make it
bigger, better and even more extravagant."

Developing a hit product is something Sundial does well.
Junk Spy, Mesa 2, Rover Pack, Relish, Clearlook and DBExpert
are all part of Sundial's OS/2 product line.

"We kept the spirit of the original Jeopardy in our new
multimedia Warped Jeopardy! show," added Flint, "and we look
forward to letting everyone think of their questions while
Sundial Has The Answers."

                 OS/2 SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP
              PHILADELPHIA AREA COMPUTER SOCIETY
                   http://www.phillyos2.org

The OS/2 SIG of the Philadelphia Area Computer Society invites
all interested computer users to attend the October meeting:

        WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 27 1999 7:00 - 10:00 PM
The Episcopal Academy, 376 N. Latches Lane, Merion, PA

         *** OCTOBER FEATURE PRESENTATION ***
-- Remote Boot of Warp 4 via RIPL --

The main feature planned for the October meeting will be a
presentation/demo of Remote Boot of OS/2 Warp 4 by SIG member
Vadim Kavalerov, making use of IBM's RIPL for this purpose.
Comparisons of RIPL (Remote Initial Program Load) with WSOD
(Workspace on Demand) will also be discussed.

Dozens of RIPL requesters can share a single hard drive installed
on a server. Switched fast ethernet networks are in general use
which provide wide bandwidth to make RIPL practical. But the main
advantage is simplified system administration. Applications, user
data, or system software updates need be installed only once to
be instantly available to the whole workgroup, on every desktop.
An additional advantage of RIPL systems is high reliability.

We'll be showing how to configure a basic Warp 4 RIPL requester
with Warp Server for e-business. A few other ways to manage RIPL
clients with IBM and ISV products will also be discussed. All it
takes to boot Warp 4 is to install a supported network card.

SIG member Vadim Kavalerov is an investment analyst working for
a major brokerage firm in the Philadelphia area. He holds a PhD
in physics and has been working in research labs, and has taught
university students since 1984.

Other agenda items include SIG business matters, OS/2 news, new
software releases, Q&A session, software raffle, etc. An OS/2
system will be on hand for demos of OS/2, Java, Internet, etc.,
as time permits. Free light refreshments will also be available.

Mark the date and time: Wednesday, October 27th, at 7:00pm, to
hear about all the new and exciting developments, or if you have
questions about OS/2 Warp and Java. OS/2 SIG meetings are open
and free for OS/2 users, their guests and all others interested
in learning about OS/2 and associated Java technology.

WE SUPPORT THE JAVA LOBBY: http://www.javalobby.org

Further information, directions to Episcopal Academy, and other
useful information about the OS/2 SIG activities may be found on
our web site at http://www.phillyos2.org, or contact SIG Leader
Larry Lavins: llavins@worldnet.att.net, or phone (215) 878-9609.

Subj: MAME for OS/2 .36 beta 7 is available

From: Marty <mamodeo@stny.rr.com>

MAME stands for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator.

It allows you to play your favorite classic, and some not-so-classic
arcade games (from the 70's through the 90's) from the comfort of your
OS/2 desktop.

The OS/2 version has been updated to the latest version of the MAME core
(.36 beta 7). If you are upgrading from beta 6, it will automatically
update your Quick List and scan for newly supported games the first time
you start it up so you don't have to manually rescan everything from
scratch and erase your Favorites list.

Please note that the official web site's URL has changed to
http://emuos2.vintagegaming.com. It is still part of what used to be
Dave's Video Game Classics. Dave has changed his site's name to the
Vintage Gaming Network which will have more of a focus on arcade
emulation.

Enjoy!

- Marty

Junk Spy Ready For OS/2 Action

  Junk Spy (http://www.sundialsystems.com/junkspy/) is ready
for download.

"It's a free prerelease version," says Randell Flint of
Sundial. "We're finished with our internal testing, and now
we want everyone to give it a try. Go straight to the Junk
Spy page and get yourself a copy."

Junk Spy installs between your email program and your mail
server where it watches for, and filters out, junk mail.

"This is a hands-off answer to everyone's junk mail
problem" adds Rollin White, Junk Spy's Development Manager.
"Here at Sundial we constantly analyze new junk mail and we
also continuously update a database of known spammer sites.
We do all of the logic enhancements and database updates so
Junk Spy is always current."

Get your prerelease version of Junk Spy right now at

           http://www.sundialsystems.com/junkspy/

"Junk Spy's logic engine lets us do much more than an
end-user can with filters, since a mail program's filters
can't access a database of clues or do extensive logic" says
Randell Flint. "And because Junk Spy does all the checking
based on Sundial's constant flow of database updates and
detection clues, there's no need for a user to create
filters and then keep them updated."

Junk Spy makes email more productive since you don't waste
time cleaning trash messages from your inbox. It's another
solution from Sundial - "Sundial Has The Answers".

Subj: Version 1.60 of NFTP available

From: Sergey Ayukov <asv@sai.msu.ru>

Version 1.60 of NFTP is available.

I am proud to reaffirm my commitment to develop OS/2 software with
this new release of a popular FTP client, NFTP. Despite gloomy rumours
about OS/2 future, NFTP users should not worry: regardless of market
situation and official IBM support for our operating system, there's
no end of OS/2 support in the NFTP product line in sight!

NFTP is a powerful interactive textmode ftp client for BeOS Intel,
Digital Unix, FreeBSD (Intel), Linux (Intel, Alpha, SPARC), OS/2,
Solaris (SPARC and Intel) and Windows 95/98/NT.

New distinctive features of this version are:

-- two-panel screen layout, like in Norton Commander (activated by Ctrl-W);
-- new way of handling FTP passwords
   (see http://www.ayukov.com/nftp/password-caching.html for details);
-- mirroring, in both directions (currently ignores symbolic links);
-- restarting uploads;
-- connect operations are interruptable (not on Windows);
-- revamped transfer progress indicator;
-- preserving timestamps and permissions when downloading/uploading;
-- support for Netscape SuiteSpot proxy;
-- uploading via HTTP proxies;
-- authentication on HTTP proxies;
-- new scripting interface
   (see http://www.ayukov.com/nftp/scripting.html for details);
-- FTP Search results are now persistent across sessions.

NFTP user interface has been translated into English, Bulgarian, Brazilian
Portuguese, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian,
Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Swedish and
Ukrainian.

More information including detailed list of new features and bugfixes and
links for downloading is available from http://www.ayukov.com/

NFTP is shareware. Unregistered version is fully functional but after
60 days of use will produce reminder when you login to site.
The registration fee is $25. You can register via BMT Micro
(http://www.bmtmicro.com). One registration covers all versions
(including future ones) on all platforms.

Subj: new files in LEO's OS/2 archive

From: "Kai-Uwe Rommel" <rommel@ars.de>

Please post this message:

Subject: new files in LEO's OS/2 archive

The files in the list below are new in LEO's OS/2 archive.

You can access this archive using either a WWW browser or a
traditional FTP client program via:

    http://www.leo.org/pub/comp/os/os2/
    ftp://ftp.leo.org/pub/comp/os/os2/

Both URL's provide access to the same file collection.

Using the WWW front end, you can easily navigate through the
archive, view archive contents (even view README or FILEID_DIZ
etc. files from within .ZIP files directly) and download files.

Since LEO's OS/2 archive also contains a part of IBM's FixPak
distribution server (service.boulder.ibm.com), there may be new
items in this section too, but they are not listed here.

See /pub/comp/os/os2/leo/00-files for a full index of this OS/2
archive and 00-readme for other information, such as how to
upload to this archive.

Subj: The new version of Nice OS/2 Enhancer is released :-)

From: "Sergey Posokhov" <abc@posokhov.msk.ru>

                               Hello!

The Nice OS/2 Enhancer adds new features to the OS/2 Warp system. It
works alongside the Presentation Manager (PM) and other applications.

This version has a new interface and great changes in a kernel code,
the speed was increased, new features were added.

Here is a list of the Enhancer's features:
  * Image movement in all windows by means of mouse and keyboard,
  * Frames and controls modified for all windows,
  * Workplace extension - four "Rooms" around the desktop,
  * "Hot-keys" definition for any version of OS/2 Warp,
  * Various "patches" for your system.

Nice OS/2 Enhancer is a multi-threaded application so it cannot block the
system, and is very stable. All actions are performed in background mode
so you do not need to upgrade your hardware to use this Enhancer.

Try to make your system better :-)

System requirements: OS/2 Warp 4.x with Netscape Navigator.

 Status: OpenSource software.

Subj: MAMERun beta 1 released

From: nospamstefanj@gte.net (Jason Stefanovich)

I just uploaded my PM fronted MAMERun for
the DOS version of MAME to Hobbes, you can
also get it at my home directory.
Size is 142k.
ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/mrunb1.zip
http://home1.gte.net/stefanj/mrunb1.zip

What is it:
MAMERun is a FREEWARE PM frontend for the DOS version of MAME
(Multi. Arcade Machine Emulator). A Frontend is a program that
makes it easier for the user to interface with their application,
which usually has a command line interface. MAME is a very popular
emulator that allows you to run thousands of classic arcade
games on your PC (if you own the ROMs). You can find the MAME
homepage at http://mame.retrogames.com/. The Official
(and very good) OS/2 PM port of MAME was done by
Marty Amodeo and is at http://emuos2.vintagegaming.com/.

Why:
I wrote MAMERun because I wanted an alternative to running the
PM version without having to reboot back to Windows or type
in really long command strings. Some people have problems
with their video and sound in PM. For me it was the fact that
my poor system just couldn't chug along fast enough too keep
up. I also like to tweak stuff. I've included most of the options
that MAME has (some 30 of them) so you can fiddle all you like.
You may find that using the DOS version of MAME under OS/2
works better for you, or maybe not. Just keep having fun!!

Requirements:
OS/2
MAME for DOS (I used version .36 beta 7)
DOS Support installed
REXX
joystick device driver (download from hobbes or DDPAK)
ROMs (DO NOT ASK ME FOR, OR WHERE TO GET ROMS!!)

If you like MAME please try it out and tell me what you think.

Subj: Pentium optimized version of MAME for OS/2 .36 beta 7 has been updated.

From: Marty <mamodeo@stny.rr.com>

The Pentium optimized version of the recently released MAME for OS/2 .36
beta 7 has been updated. It was originally built using a buggy GCC
optimization which caused instability. The 486 version did not suffer
from this instability and did not need to be updated. I have rebuilt
the Pentium optimized version without the offending optimization and it
has cured many problems.

If you currently have the Pentium optimized version, I strongly
recommend that you download this update. It is available at
http://emuos2.vintagegaming.com as usual.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

- Marty
