Thanks, Graham. Turning WIN-ATM to ON worked for me to bring back the
seamless Win-Os2 session. For the life of me I can't figure out why.

You may be able top re-sync things by switching back to standard VGA,
the usual reboot deal, then re-establishing a higher quality video mode,
plus the usual reboot after that deal.

You also may be able to "find" the 'missing' folder by scanning for the
icon for it in the appropriate directory. That operation is part of the
properties operation for the appropriate desktop segment. Once the
'subfolder' is back in the 'folder', the ability to bring it up may
'cure' itself.

When I've been 'blessed' by this one, I've had to use MOLE or whatever
to kill the then orphaned thread...

One not mentioned above is to simply "remigrate" the WIN programs to
your desktop! Sometimes OS/2 loses syncronization between WINOS2 and
the main OS/2, as to video parameters. It seems to work out that a full
sized screen will work; seamless with a windowed session will not.

One professionally mentioned tip in the "Your OS/2 Warp Consultant", is
to simple add a new item to the desktop in the Additional Windows
Programs folder by scanning for it and adding it with the Add New
Programs folder in the Setup folder.

What appears to happen is that during the re-scan, the Desktop can
re-sync the video drivers and video granularity. Poof! Windowed
sessions come right back One of the tipoffs that signify you may be
able to use this trick, is that suddenly some of the Windows icons for
things in your folders are all black or grayed out. There will be a
message like "Insufficient memory to convert icons." That appears to
arise from attempts to switch video granularrity at a system level, in
which the Desktop fails to complete the icon conversion to the new
Desktop graphics matrix. I've had it happen a half a dozen times. When
it does, the above trick, except for once, has fixed me up.

Last but not least.. If you have been a good child, backing up your
entire Desktop with the IBM Archive setting, at reasonable intervals,
you may be able to simply switch back to an archived Desktop and the
problem may dissapear. The results are, obvioulsy, keyed to just how
good a job of archiving you have done.

That noted, I opine anyone running OS/2 without UNIMAINT or the GRAHAM
UTILITES, or CHECKINI, and whom does not, reasonably often, clean up the
INI files and back them up with whatever related utility -- is --
headed for a one-way trip the the bit bucket anyway. As noted in the
UNIMAINT manual ... the UNI files are terribly complex things. Despite
the fact that OS/2 is so stable - things happen! Prolly one reason that
these things are so little noted is that the stability of OS/2 can lure
one into a false sense of security about taking care of things.

Sure, we OS/2 fanatics have it all over the WIN crew about stability,
but there are limits, power glitches, and a few things that even mighty
OS/2 cannot keep down in its tummy!! As was noted to me; archive early
and often. I do, at least once a week.. :)

--> Sleep well; OS2's still awake! ;)

OS/2 is installed in a primary partition. NT is in the first primary
partition, OS2 Warp in the second 2GB partition and an extended 2GB
partition next.
Boot manager is installed and NT boots and OS/2 boots.
The problem is: The install hangs just before it builds the desktop.
After several reboots, the system comes up and runs OK. My concern is why?
I have 10 more to install and I was hoping to understand why this hangs or
if anyone has seen similiar problems with the new IBM PC300 PL processors.

(\NETSCAPE) where 2.02 was living. Oops!

NS 4.61 seems be working fine anyway, and, oddly, 2.02 is still there
too. But I do not feel good about this! Any suggestions? Should I
just try to uninstall everything and start over?

BTW, where does 4.61 keep its bookmark file (which I like to use as a

Try it. See if it works. The NS4.61 developer's made the effort to allow
4.61 and 2.02 to co-exist. This means non-conflicting DLL names. You got
lucky and did not wipe out the 2.02 netscape.exe.

In the Users directory.

From: serwas@ibm.net

Greetings all,

Well, OS/2 finally went down after about a year. When it does, it's
always
my fault.

I never did know what the 'error readout' meant, or how to interpret
it. Worse,
I don't know where to send it.
I would appreciate anyone telling me where to go [nono, I'm already in
Hell, having
to operate with NT to get around].
I was messing around with updating EMX to "D" version. But I was able
to reboot
twice before I got the trap D.

Any help is appreciated.

TIA

Subj: Problems dialing to the Internet (Help please)

From: Sergi Ballester <balleste@boehringer-ingelheim.es>

Hi all,

First: Sorry for the crossposting

Second: The real problem:

I'm going through a problem that it may have been suffered by anybode
else.
The problem is that I can't connect to the Internet with my home machine
via modem (PPP).
One month ago I installed FP 10 (I don't know if one thing carried the
other), but I can't connect (I have been working with no problems for
the 3 last years). After this problem appeared I downloaded Injoy and
registered it (everybody say that it's a terrific app) with no success,
even tried SIO. I got a free account from one of the biggest spanish
providers with it own dialer called Teleline.

I'm trying all these dialers and providers:
"Dial other internet provider" --> Redes tb + Airtelnet + Teleline
Injoy 2.2    ----> Redes tb + Airtelnet + Teleline
Infovia plus ---->  Teleline

The problem I'm getting is:
Call established.
My machine gets an IP adress from the provider.
After a few seconds the conections suddenly stops.

I have an account at ibm.net that works perfectly using IBM Dialer
(SLIP), but I don't want to use it due to fact that IBM is not a local
provider.

My machine is:
Clone P166 + 96MB + S3 Virge 2MB + US Robotics Sporter external 28.8 +
Warp 4.0 Spanish + FP 10 + SIO drivers

All this makes me thing about a problem with the TCP/IP setup, but I'm
not aware of me changing anything. Any idea out there??

TIA,
Sergi Ballester (Sabadell, Spain)

I'm using Warp 3 fp 40 with the new Netscape 4.61 & plug-ins. My
immediate need is being able to interact on sites that use java
applets (for instance, it seems most chat rooms require this now).
Long-term plans are to build a personal website.

I became a bit confused at the IBM service site as I'm not sure which
I need to do either or both of the above. Which of the 2 runtime
packages would I need? And which components of 1.1.8? If someone could
explain a bit about the use of each I'd be most grateful.

From: williamd1@ibm.net (williamd1)

I have Warp 3 & fp 40 (I think), but do not seem to have support for
ttf fonts. Shouldn't I be able to use them now? Running syslevel shows
040 for the fixpaks & base OS only. The MM & graphics engine are at
300. Is this normal, or am I only partially at the fp40 level? What
file(s) should I expect to see that indicate ttf support?

Finally, are there ATM fonts available that look better than the
originals? Mostly I'm concerned about the font selection in my 4.61
browser, but would also like more variety overall.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Hi Sergi:

The only simple solution that I can think of is that your
resolv files are not correct. You may have a resolv and a
resolv2 file, and their contents should be something like:

domain <host (you)>
<nameserver ip #1>
<nameserver ip #2>

Hi Bill:

All that you need to get is the 1.1.8 runtime package without
Unifont support. The other packages are for Java development.

Subj: Re: Trouble Install with Warp 3.0

From: skhalsa@my-deja.com

Someone once told me to do something to the driver files that I don't
need to reduce their size, but the install routine still checks for
their presence. I can't remember what was suggested, so I created some
1K text files with the names of the drivers I deleted. It got me
through diskette 6, but when it asked for diskette 1 the second time it
crashed. (Probably looking for my tampered driver files.) Finally, I
used the original diskette 1 for the second go round and the install
completed, but of course would not reboot.

I booted from floppy, got to the command line prompt and copied over the
updated idedasd files manually. Did the trick, the hard way. By the
way, this is a good time to do the Trevor Hemsley sysinstx/uhpfs.dll
trick if you have the 2.1GB problem.

I don't know if the following trick would work, but IBM gave the
following instructions (for Warp 4) for adding drivers for devices not
originally supported on the install disks and making space for them. It
involves pushing some files onto disk 2 when you know the correct order
drivers are loading. If anyone has insight as to whether this technique
would work for the subject problem, I'd be interested to hear:

OSINDVDR - HOW TO INSTALL DRIVERS ON THE OS/2 WARP 4 STARTUP DISKETTES
FOR UNRECOGNIZED OR UNSUPPORTED DEVICES
09/20/96
=======================================================================
How to Install Drivers on the OS/2 Warp 4 Startup Diskettes for
Unrecognized or Unsupported Devices
=======================================================================
Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures
--------------------------------------------------------------
DESCRIPTION

If you have a device (for example, a CD-ROM or a hard drive) that is not
recognized or supported by OS/2 Warp 4, you may still be able to
utilize it by modifying the CONFIG.SYS on the OS/2 Installation
diskette and by adding files to one of the other two startup diskettes.

RESOLUTION

The following steps will guide you through this procedure:

1. Locate the device driver for your device. A good starting place
to look for these devices is on the DDPak CD which is shipped
with the operating system. Some device drivers may also be

downloaded from the Internet or may be obtained by contacting the
manufacturer of the device. Be sure to read any README's associated
with the device driver, this will tell you whether to add a DEVICE=
   or a BASEDEV= statement to your CONFIG.SYS.

Note: If there is not a README file, look for a .DDP file. This
file should state whether to use a DEVICE= or a BASEDEV=
          statement in the CONFIG.SYS.

2. Using a text editor, modify the CONFIG.SYS. Add the
DEVICE=[filename] or BASEDEV=[filename] statement (with the
corresponding driver filename) to the bottom of CONFIG.SYS.
Be sure word wrap is turned off in the editor and
   save the file.

If you already have the device driver files and READMEs, you
can escape to a command prompt to modify the CONFIG.SYS on the
diskettes from various places in the install by pressing F3
(the option is listed at the bottom of the screen when it is
   available).

3. If a DEVICE= statement is added to CONFIG.SYS, copy the
specified device driver to Diskette #2.

4. If a BASEDEV= statement is added to the CONFIG.SYS, copy the
specified device driver to Diskette 1.

If there is no room on Diskette 1,
Do Not Simply Copy the File to Diskette #2; you must
   do the following:

BASEDEV= device drivers are loaded in order of their file
   name extensions:

.SYS .BID .VSD .TSD .ADD .I13 .FLT .DMD

If several BASEDEV= statements contain file names with
the same extension, those files will be loaded in the order
in which they appear in the CONFIG.SYS.

Scan through the CONFIG.SYS from the bottom, looking for
BASEDEV= statements referencing .DMD files, if none are
found, look for .FLT files, and so on, in backwards order of
the file extensions listed above. Once you locate the bottom
most of these statements, move the referenced file from
   Diskette #1 to Diskette #2.

Do Not change the location of these BASEDEV= lines in the
CONFIG.SYS once you move the files. Continue moving files
to Diskette #2 in this manner until there is enough room for
the new driver on Diskette #1.

Note: If the driver you are adding is a .DMD file and it
happens to be the last BASEDEV= in the CONFIG.SYS, this file
can be directly added to Diskette #2.

5. You can now restart the system from the modified startup
    diskettes.

Get it to comm 3 (pnp in bios=off) or install Gwinn's SIO driver.
Version 1.6 supports upto 4 comm ports.

NO, sorry that's Windows.

In OS/2 there's rarely something for free.
(That's part of the plan to make our operating system a HUGE success)
If you use Warp 3 Blue spine (or the red spine with bonuspack) you'll
find somewhere
IBM's "Dial Other Internet Providers"
Even better : Injoy's Dialer.

I've tried to do this and have failed - I'd be interested to know if you
suceed. If you look carefully at the 1460 data it states that OS/2 does not
support installation from PCMCIA SCSI drives. In principle it should just be
a matter of putting the correct drivers onto the installation disks. You'll
need the various socket services drivers plus the 1460 driver. If you can
find a copy of OS/2 Warp unleashed SPecial Edition it has some information.

Is drive C: accessible? Presumably because of brain-dead programming,
a lot of M$ stuff won't run unless you let it write to drive C:, even
if the software is installed in another drive. You'll get this problem
if, for example, you convert C: to a format (like NTFS) for which you
don't have OS/2 drivers.

The workaround is to put something in your autoexec.bat that will map
C: to an accessible drive. It's one of those obscure DOS commands:
SUBST, or something like that.

Bingo. That it. I had just converted the C: Drive to NT and formatted it as an
NTFS
partition. I just wiped and re-formatted as FAT and all work well. Have to
write this one

I read that VLB Mach64 cards will work properly with the current

When I run 'startx', the XServer runs through all available

I have a Mitsubishi Diamond Scan 17FS monitor which will support

Any suggestions as to which ATI settings will work for my setup?

From: Joe Farruggio <jfarrug@erols.com>

HI
I just purchased a HP 895Cxi inkjet printer and downloaded the os2
driver from the online DD pack. The driver seems to work fine in os2,
however i can't get any color printing under win-os2. The printer will
print in monochrome and the port is connected to the printer on lpt1
which is where os2 finds the printer. Any suggestions as to how i can
get color printing under win-os2. TIA

Subj: New Motherboard - System Freezes

From: "Frank Jones" <fjones@onlink.net>

First, thank you, again, to Buddy for helping me get Warp4 reinstalled on
the new hard drive!

System is:
ASUS P2B-B Motherboard with Pentium II/Celeron 366mhz chip.
Video Adapter: Cirrus Logic PCI VGA CL-GD5440 with 1MB memory,
 External USR 56K fax-modem on COM2
 Serial mouse on COM1
Lexmark 3200 colour inkjet on LPT1
CDROM: Creative Labs (aka Matsushita) 4x cdrom
Hard Drive: 4.3gig SMART capable Quantum Fireball
 formatted as: ||BM||Win95||OS2||data{FAT16}||data{HPFS}||free space||

Problem: system freezes when using Word6 under Winos2; also on an initial
powerup I get a black screen after the OS2 "blob", it can take 2or3 resets
to get the OS/2 logo to display (though it seems that alternating Hardware
detection [F5/F6] from the Alt+F1 screen will cause the logo to load OK
the freeze can then somtimes happen doing any mouse operation in OS/2-PM);
Win95 freezes on any Drag&drop operation. and has also frozen when I tried
to run one of the pgms that came with the Lexmark printer..... ( oh, and
Alt+F2 NEVER works when the logo does not show up)

BIOS reports CDROM on IRQ 15, Hard drive on IRQ 14, OS2/Win95 agrees

Bios reports Display on IRQ 11 without Soundcard(, irq 9 with soundcard)
OS/2 shows no IRQ for display, Win95 agrees with bios...

RMVIEW /IRQ shows: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 14, 15 as being used. NetFinity
Hardware manager shows: 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 13, 14, 15 IRQs being used

-Mouse is using IRQ4(unique), Modem is using IRQ3(multipexed)

I have removed all other cards from the machine(Soundblaster pnp & 3com
LAN card), disconnected the old Maxtor 1.3 gig nonSMART HD, (and I also
ran Trevor's memos2.exe 999 with no errors)....

Can anybody point me in the direction of finding a solution for this? I
really need to be able to run Word6 for a project I am on, and I would
prefer to run it on OS2, and though I will be trying it under Win95, I
don't hold much hope for it.

ADVthanksANCE
Frank.

I made up a X-windows.cmd that says this... start x in 32 bit mode
if you have 4 meg of video ram
You do have the svga server for your ATI card?

ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1

startx -- -bpp 32

You could try Staroffice for OS/2 to handle your Word Documents.

Without the complete server output, no useful answer is possible.
It may be that the server fails to find the correct RAM amount (although
this is rather unlikely for the Mach) or you have setup pretty invalid
monitor settings for the requested resolutions.

Chairo Robert.
Yes, it will be nice to use Staroffice for my own documents, but I get the
documents in Word format, and need to run perl scripts against RTF files
to reformat for the project, and then return Word format docs to the
project leader (I'm just a "grunt" and the project has been running for a
couple of yuears already, so I am unable to change the way it is being
run), once the proofreading and formatting are finished then a
Wordprocesser that handles XML is what I will reqire ... hopefully
Staroffice will be the one I can use for it....

Anyway, I still have the problems with OS/2 that make it run (or should I
say not-run) like Windows - today OS/2 froze twice on a simple DnD, and I
still have an Active Winos2 session that freezes the pc every time I try
to close it (i need win for checking the greek and hebrew comments in the
docs....)

So I am still looking for anyone who can lead me through some way of
finding out what it is that is causing these hangs....

Grace to you.
Frank.

Sounds like a good hint to _not_ start downloading XR_M012 until the IBM

Same here. It is also shorter than the other full disk images.

I'm experiencing a problem with black icons displayed in place of the
normal icons along side the hardware titles in the Hardware Manager
folder. If I try to double click on an item in the folder the following
message is displayed:

"The system was unable to show settings for the object. The system may
be out of resources." OK Cancel Help

If I look at the hardware using RMVIEW all appears to be okay.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Just had a look using command line ftp - the sizes for .gdk and .hdk are
1472657 and 333457 respectively.

No, Boulder ran out of space, and it had a serious effect on FP 12... As

Looks ok from this side of the pond using command line ftp - the file
"message" does now say that the image for .fdk was corrupt and has been
replaced. The addendum to Message is time 1:30 CST.

Yes, I do.
I was one of those unfortunate beings that came across a stack of NEC
C251 4X4 and C254 6X4 CD-ROMs. I use them in standard system installs as
the first CD-ROM. I also rely on the relatively inexpensive SB-16 Vibra
audio ISA cards.

My standard set-up for DOS/WIN3.1 is to install DOS 6.22, the NEC DOS
driver, and other DOS drivers as needed. I then install WIN 3.1(1) and
all of its associated drivers, including the WIN31 NEC driver and the SB
drivers (on CD). You must ALWAYS remember with WIN31 to goto the drivers
area of the desktop icon and install the CD audio driver,(on disk 5), or
it wont work, even if SB drivers are installed.

If I am doing two primaries on my hard drive and installing WARP 3 or 4
over the second copy of DOS/WIN, I make sure all works there too, first.

You require the updated IDE driver. Look for IDEDASD.EXE at
http://service.software.ibm.com/os2ddpak/html/index.htm.
You will find it in many places on that site. This is a self
extracting file, that will produce what you need to run a hard drive
that is larger than about 4.3 gig. Read the README file for
instructions.

Hope this helps...

Interesting thought. Except that I'm using VIAIDE.ADD instead of
IBM1S506.ADD. I'll give DANIS506.ADD a try when I get a chance to see
what happens.

Yes, the top of the screen has what is presumably correct data.
However, the bottom half is suppose to list all the processes. It's
blank. More importantly to me is that the OS20MEMU API interface that
PMPatrol uses is non-functional.

Again this is on a 128MB system. Previously worked when RAM was only
24MB.

I'm aware of the later versions for OS/2 but there is only one
designated for X11 on Hobbes. I don't have the tools or the knowledge
to compile the source from later versions under XFree86/X11.

Are you saying that I can run the OS/2 native code under XFree86?

Will installing the OS/2 version 5.50 solve the "Can't find the

I bought Ghostscript on CD-ROM from the author and avoided all the hassle. I

Neat sites, but I don't think I'd try installing the Network Neighborhood
driver
on a non-server machine.

Regardless, I got the problem fixed, and it was on the Win98 side. I had been
checking "use existing driver" when the fix included re-installing the driver,
for some reason.

Thanks for your help, though! :-)

I had initially only en_US and there was no Hebrew among the
listed languages. I used the "other" entry to add "Hebrew [he]"
(which on subsequent activations of Netscape was shown just as "he").

Alhough I have the Hebrew working now, the "per language" is not clear to me:
do you mean that fonts selection operations are associated with the
last language selected on the "languages" page?

Hebrew sets had already been selected. Maybe that's because I'm running

This line too had already existed. I remember there were some BIDI

A good year to you too...

Now I have 3 working web browsers:

WebEx: the most primitive (not even frames) but it's the fastest
and is "well integrated" into the WPS (drag&drop WebExURL
objects, etc.). Takes about 2MB of memory when started
empty. I use it for sites I know as "not using frames".

NS 2.02:	Does frames but slower. Most Hebrew pages shown in a wrong
order of letters. Drag&drop WebExURL object onto
an OPEN NS 2.02 acts same as WebEx: it goes to this URL.
In order for "drag&drop URL object onto Icon" to work
I had to write a simple REXX script and to create a program
object of this scrips with NS Icon. When URL object is
dropped onto this prog. object, it calls NS with URL as
argument, causing it to go to this URL.
Takes about 3MB of memory when started empty.
I use it for non-Hebrew sites with frames.

NS 4.61:	Does Hebrew too. Slowest of the three. Drag&drop URL object
onto an OPEN NS 4.61 opens URL object as file instead of
going to this URL. The same workaround with REXX script
allows URL object to be dropped onto Icon of NS.
Takes about 7MB when started empty.
I'll use ot for Hebrew pages. I started this whole issue
of Hebrew pages mainly because my father asked me to
fix the Hebrew pages viewing on his machine. I rarely
surf Hebrew sites. Now, when I know what should I do,
I'll install NS 4.61 on his machine too (assuming
computers behave in a deterministic way). :-)

Subj: DOS windows fail when accessing a Netware Server

Message sender: glen.stamnitzNOglSPAM@americo.com.invalid

From: gstamnitz <glen.stamnitzNOglSPAM@americo.com.invalid>

I have moved a working OS/2 box from token ring to an ethernet network.
I have made all of the os/2 network connectivity work--lan manager, SNA
etc.
Many of my users use DOS windows to log into a couple of Netware 3x and
4x servers. Now when I do this, the login will fail, but with various
symptoms. The DOS windows opens, the autoexec runs netx and I get the
f:/login> prompt. When I type 'login testuser', I will get one of
several symptoms:
a. I get an immediate failure message and the window closes
b. I get a syntax error from login.exe
c. I get error messages from the system/container login script
d. The batch file the script exits to will fail

I can log in using and OS/2 command window with no problem but as soon
as I execute a DOS command, I get a DOS failure. I suspect a framesize
problem somewhere, but I can't find anything related to just the dos
sessions and everything else seems to work fine.

I am using Intel 100/pro NIC, odi2ndi.sys, Warp3 and netware client
2.12.

Baffled...

You mean it is supposed to work with FP8? Here it doesn't (at least, it
doesn't show the process list: if you know the PID you want, you can
still type it in).

I recently tried to install GRADD .8 on a Warp4/FP10 machine with a

this problem?

To: John Hong <jdc0014@InfoNET.st-johns.nf.ca>
From: Jim Parker <jdparker@erols.com>

First a question. I need the the FAT32 driver now but don't know where to
find it. Would you please point me to it?

Now, as to seeing two primary partitions at the same time: what version of
Boot Manager do you have? The reason I ask is that several years ago
PowerQuest licensed Boot Manager from IBM and distributed it with Partition
Magic 3.0. Later PowerQuest provided patches which made Boot Manager properly
handle FAT32 partitions. The symptom of failure is that two primary
partitions become visible at the same time if at least one of them is FAT32.
Sounds like the version of Boot Manager that you have is the old one and that
it is causing the problem. I don't know whether IBM ever distributed a Boot
Manage update or not. If you have Partition Magic 3.0, you can go to
PowerQuest's web site and download the patch. Then install the patch and,
finally, delete and reinstall Boot Manager. It is not a separate BootManager
patch. So I would not expect to be able to somehow apply their patch to the
Boot Manager that came with Warp.

BTW, PowerQuest is up to version 4.x of Partition Magic and 4.0 comes with
BootMagic which is different from Boot Manager. BootMagic can be installed in
either DOS or some flavor of Windows. It gets installed in that partition so
it doesn't take up a primary partition. When you boot up it takes over and
you can then select what partition gets booted, including the partition in
which BootMagic resides. Besides not taking up a primary, I believe it does
have another feature which may be useful: I think you can set up the
configuration so that it will hide/unhide partitions the way you want
depending on which partition you boot up. The disadvantage is that you must
have a DOS/Windows primary partition.

From: Ray <raymond.heath@pss.boeing.com>

All,
I am using a Pentium system but it seems excessively long to boot up, 3
1/2 min, and my audio is missing. Here is my system setup:

Intel P133 non MMX (don't know where I found this chip)
100mhz motherboard
no cache (hard stuff to find if it doesn't come with motherboard)
32meg RAM
1.5G Fuji HD, partioned 25% DOS/WIN, 75% WARP/DOS/WIN
(two primaries under System Commander)
NEC 4X4 CD-ROM
SB-16 PCI Vibra
1.44 floppy
IOMEGA IDE ZIP
Trident SVGA using the standard 8900 driver @ 256 colors

I have DOS 6.22 and WIN 3.1 loaded up on primary 1 and it boots in 30
seconds, with sound in WIN 3.1.

I have WARP and a second copy of DOS/WIN loaded on primary 2, both
primaries boot through System Commander.

Any clues where to look?

Ray
