You will have to pay far more than you think if you cannot get a free
upgrade from IBMAV. You have to buy a CD with server and clients for
several OS's, not just OS/2.

Here in the US, the best price is $207 or around 130 Pounds Sterling. In
addition you must buy user licenses at $39 or about 25 Pounds with a
minimum purchase of 10 licenses.

Hi Doug,

far less then 2gigs free on any partition...

I'm suspecting someone in IBM is trying to be clever and tries to install
some temp part
on "C" partition (which I always keep small) before we have a chance to
tell installer where
to install Comm461.

But to proove that I would have to use PMagic, resize partitions... (too
much pain for a
present state of my disks)

And I absolutely adore messages like "no free space" not mentioning
anything else
(why,where ...)

regards,

D.

Subj: Comm. 4.61 - is it messing up your mouse pointers and message box icons

From: Markus Quandt <Markus.Quandt@gmx.net>

Hello all,

it appears that NS 4.61 (GA) is playing games with mouse pointers and
the symbols that are displayed in message boxes etc.
I'm using the "Big Black" mouse pointers, and just recently - most
probably only after I started using NS 4.61 GA - some of these are
sometimes randomly replaced by arbitrary icons from my desktop. Instead
of seeing the I-beam as a text cursor, I already had a different arrow
form from another pointer set, or the inverted icon for GhostView, e.g.
A similar thing happens with the symbols you see in message boxes:
Instead of exclamation or question marks, I sometimes get random icons
or even mouse pointers...

I'm not certain but rather sure that this only happens after/when using
Comm. 4.61. Was using 4.04 GA before and never noticed this. I'm using a
S3 Trio64V+ graphics card with Gradd 0.80 driver, on Warp 4 german, FP9.
Not a big thing, but slightly confusing sometimes...

Am I the only one?

we're getting same error 3175 (access violation), randomly, causing
ns4.61 GA to close down. sometimes it occurs after period of
inactivity. this also occured with beta version.

I just took a look at my C: drive, with File Phoenix. There is no
evidence of anything left over there from the NC461 install (I don't
use my C: drive much, and there were old deleted files listed from
quite a while back). For what that is worth, I don't think that is
where your problem lies.

One thing that MIGHT cause your problem, is the place where your temp
variables are pointing, in CONFIG.SYS.

If there is no entry, it will default to the root directory on your
boot drive (not really a good option, especially if it is a FAT drive,
which is limited to 512 files -> including the volume label) What I
suggest, is to create a directory, called TEMP on the partition where
you have the most room. Then add (or change existing entries) this to
CONFIG.SYS:
==================================================
SET TEMP=x:\TEMP
SET TMP=x:\TEMP
==================================================
where x: is the selected drive. TMP is an older, not widely used
(except by some IBM programmers) variable, that may not be in your
CONFIG.SYS. Also look for multiple copies of these variables. Only the
last one will be used (LOTUS SmartSuite for OS/2 warp4 put a second
set into my CONFIG.SYS, which pointed to a directory in it's own
directory stucture).

You should also clean out any left over *.TMP files that may have been
left over from the previous settings.

Hope this helps...

There seems to be some consensus that this is the result of cleaning
up the Netscape cache.

Go to http://ncic.netmag.cz/apps/nase/smartcache_e.html, get
SmartCache and install it, then set the disk cache size to zero, and
the memory cache to 1024. (I think this requires an HPFS partition,
for the long file name support).

You can then set ALL of your browsers to zero disk cache, and use
SmartCache in ALL of them (only one cache directory).

It is also possible that Pulse is causing the problem. Try it witthout
Pulse running (this is a longshot, but you never know <g>).

Hope this helps...

I've seen this before. What has probably happened is that your INI files
have become corrupted and <WP_DESKTOP> doesn't point to your WPS
anymore. If you have a recent desktop backup, restore it. Otherwise, run
the Checkini utility from Henk Kelder. That should correct the problem.

If you are using Xfolder, things are a little more complicated because
Checkini won't recognize it. You'll have to install Xfolder again
afterwards.

Good luck,

Been months and months since I've had a system crash.
As far as I can remember, I did nothing unusual - just
click on the icon to start Netscape. Immediately the
pop-up for the SYS3175 came up. When I pressed enter
for it to write to popuplog.os2, that's when the WPS
locked up.

Subj: Another NS 4.61 popuplog.os2 Example

From: Jim Stuyck <jstuyck@home.com>

Note the several instances of NETSCAPE.EXE, all one right after
the other, followed by PMSHELL.EXE. This did NOT take out the
whole system (that's the subject of another thread that I haven't
captured in the past couple days).

Restore them. Quitcher whining. All is impermanence.

All seriousness aside, are you running Dialog Enhancer, and if so did you
run CHECKINI while it was active? CHECKINI looks at the SCENTER.CFG stuff
in \OS2\DLL and not the ones in \OS2\DEPROG\DLL, and thinks it needs to do
some cleaning.

After you've restored things, add these two commands to your STARTUP.CMD,
which duplicates the DE settings (the ones you actually see) into the place
where CHECKINI looks for them.

@xcopy c:\os2\deprog\dll\dock*.cfg c:\os2\dll 2> nul
@xcopy c:\os2\deprog\dll\scenter.cfg c:\os2\dll 2> nul

Obviously, modify the paths for your own boot drive letter.

Good luck,

Buddy

I was speaking of the level attained in Warp 4, IBMWORKS v.3.0, which
hasn't received any updates.

I can no longer find it at any IBM site, but it's here at hobbes:

ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu:/pub/os2/system/patches/warp_3/works-csd.zip

Jun 18 1996 8,302,005 works-csd.zip IBM Works v2.1

It's a big download, and requires BASEDEV=XDFLOPPY.FLT in CONFIG.SYS, and
then the OS/2 XDFCOPY utility, to make the 5 diskettes. There's probably no
slower diskette access in computerland than XDF format.

As I recall, it's a full install of IBMWORKS v.2.1, and although it's the
second fix issued, this didn't quite bring the Warp 3 version up to the
functionality of Warp 4's v.3.0. By the way, there's an easy way to use the
Warp 4 files with Warp 3, despite the lack of an Install. Copy the files
into place, make sure the entries in CONFIG.SYS are there, then run
IBMWDESK.CMD. It should do everything except create the 2 or 3 new template
objects.

I see I have a "Upgrade from the HD" file I probably made myself from the
XDFs, for v.2.1. If anybody wants it, I'll upload it to hobbes?

> There was a video driver or two for it in the PCCBBS listing.

I've never seen specific video drivers for IBMWorks, although I think some
of the cards in Aptiva models experienced particular problems while running
IBMWorks, back in '95 or so, and that stimulated some video driver fixing.
I would imagine that all those improvements have carried forward into the
latest drivers, and that it's no longer a separate issue.

Good luck,

Buddy

Thanks for posting this. I have been wondering if Warp 3 is actually a
supported platform for 4.61 -- the way I read the announcement, it appeared
to me "Warp 3" had been omitted from the list. Your post doesn't tell me if
its officially supported for Warp 3, but at least I now know it appears to be
able to install.

Subj: Color adjustment?

From: Wm D Loughman <wdlkhl@ibm.net>

Earlier, I sent this to comp.os.os2.bugs, and got no response. Trying
here now:

Bouncing 'round through printer properties, I reach two tabs:

Printer icon -> Properties -> Printer Driver -> Default Driver ->
Properties -> Default Job Properties -> Color (tab)/HSV (tab)

Here I'm allowed to set a bunch of printer properties.

I see no evidence, after say "Print Screen" (it is enabled), that there
is any effect at all on the printed page. There is nothing (??) about
this in on-line help.

Do these adjustments _have_ an effect? How do I actually get it? Where
is the documentation? Am I just missing something?

Warp-4, FixPak-6; my printer is an H-P DeskJet 680C. I want to reduce
the 'saturation' of a printed page, also the percent of red color. TIA.

Warp 4, Fixpak 11. And "I don't recall."

Here's another which just happened. This time only one entry,
took my system down, and I was invoking 4.61 with the "news"

I could fill pages with the popup output from NS4.6.1 GA while
using Aurora. One of the things that helped me was deleting all
of the newsgroup files and setting them up from scratch. I also
had In-Joy crapp out on the 23rd. This was only the third failure
of this type since December last.

How can I determine of Dialog Enhancer is running?
If de is running, with the path always be \OS2\DEPROG\DLL?

Please let me know by mail.

You're luckier than me. I opened Messenger. Downloaded mail. Deleted new

Subj: 100% CPU during Communicator 4.61 download

From: nospam@savebandwidth.invalid (John Thompson)

My initial impressions of the new Communicator v4.61 GA are good;
however, when I downloaded a file using this my CPU immediately
pegged at 100%, throughput dropped to about 25% of what it was
before I started the download and things remained this way until
the download completed. Then the cpu dropped back to about 10%,
throughput on the ppp connection went back to where it usually
is, and in general returned to normal.

Is this a known issue with Communicator 4.61 in OS/2? Comm v4.04
didn't do this, anyway. Running Warp Connect FP38.

If you are running on Warp Connect, you haven't got a supported
configuration, and probably one which hasn't been tested either. I don't
see this problem on Warp 4 with FP11.

For the netscape development team:
a. 4.61 is very very very very good.
b. it has some minor problems
b1. Moving fast between backpages, netscape tries to make contact with a
server.
If you move back before it made contact, netscape will become
unresponsive.
      OS/2 keeps running.
b2. This problem will end the netscape program

Subj: NS 461 Blank Combo Boxes!?!

From: whinkle@NOSPAMcomtecinc.com

Here's one I haven't seen reported here... in Netscape/2 4.61 (GA), all
HTML combo boxes are BLANK here! They are not one-dimension, a la the
Courier New problem -- just blank. I can pull down the listbox and select
an item OK; the selected item appears for just a moment in the entry field
area of the combo box and then it blanks again. Kind of hard to work
with <g>.

There's an apparently related problem where regular (multi-line) listboxes
are also completely blank, but you don't see those in HTML forms quite as
often as the combo boxes. I imagine this might be due to the "fix" that
keeps combo boxes from going off the bottom of the NS window.

I actually did report this to IBM during Beta 2, and got a call-back, but
the tech rep said they were just deciding which one-off bug reports to
jettison before GA, and I turned out to have one of those <g>.

Other info: OS/2 Warp 4 + FP11 here, with Tseng ET4000/w32 based video 1MB
video ram using the XR03010 (latest, I think) video driver level. I can't
think of anything weird I'm running that might effect this (e.g. Xit-type
utilities) but I'm open to suggestions.

Any ideas? Magical prefs.js settings to try, maybe?

ah, my last question......
i would like to use win-os2 session as is possible with win3.xx. ie run

also i seem to have problems with updating installation discette files using

just hangs on the discette with the updated drives.

This sounds like the font problem others have experienced using Matrox
video cards. Try selecting Edit/Preferences/Appearance/Fonts and
changing "Fixed Width Screen" from Courier New to Courier.

I'd like to add to this post, that I have noticed the same behaviour
with Comm 4.61. This does not only happen with D/L:s but also loading
pages. Aborting the D/L or stopping the page load does free the CPU.
This wierd thing seems to happen at a random basis, because reloading
a page that previously caused 100% CPU usage will almost always load
"normally".

Warp 4, FP11, MPTS 8610, using InJoy dialer.
Netscape also uses squid proxy through the local loopback interface.

If this is a question, I think you're asking it in the wrong place.
This wouldn't be a function of OS/2, but would appear to be something
that WordPerfect is doing itself.

Same problem here. Running Warp 4 FP 8.
System load 100% and transfer speed droping from ca. 5000 cps to <1000
cps.
Occurrence: simultaniously downloading files and browsing the web.
(especially when clicking on a new link, while loading the actual page
has not complete).
If i switch focus to a non Netscape window, transfer speed goes up to
5000 cps again, but the system load is still 100% until all downloads
are complete.

I am trying to install warp 4 on a new hard drive. The existing
hard drive is a 4.0 gig and the new hard drive is a 10gig drive.
When i install I get a trap 0008 Errcd 0000 Eracc **** ERLIM ********.
This occures after AHA6360.SNP is displayed during the
loading of the second disk. This computer has warp 4 running on it now.
I tried to use the update idedasd.exe and this did not help. I then
removed AHA6360.SNP and the system would stop with
the message that os2 could not operate my hard drive. If anyone could
help or if more info is needed please let me know. (Are there new
install disks?)

Nope, I had tried that because, as you say, it sure sounded similar. No
help: I do have Courier New, but various other font changes didn't help
either. But thanks!

In the grand tradition of solving something as soon as you ask for help, I
DID find the culprit: NS/2 4.61 doesn't get along with Soft&GUI's
"CommandLine" utility program. Turning off CL makes the combo box
contents appear -- along with other missing fields like the "To:" field
in Messenger.

CommandLine also interferes with things like MR2/ICE toolbars and Acrobat
printing, but it's so damn' useful I hate to put it to sleep after all
these years. Unfortunately, the former publisher doesn't want to
open-source it so someone else might fix the problems <sigh>.

What is the name of the EXE you are using to launch REALPLAYER?

It needs to either be blank (WPS) or be REALPLAY.EXE

No to first question. W95-8 and os2 are incompatible.

On the second question, you will have to delete some uneeded files on the
install disks. The problem is that the new drivers are too big to fit in
the original arragement. There is a rumor that this will be fixed by FP12
for warp4.

I've tried to do this and have failed - I'd be interested to know if you
suceed. If you look carefully at the 1460 data it states that OS/2 does not
support installation from PCMCIA SCSI drives. In principle it should just be
a matter of putting the correct drivers onto the installation disks. You'll
need the various socket services drivers plus the 1460 driver. If you can
find a copy of OS/2 Warp unleashed SPecial Edition it has some information.

hoping that a genius out there may have a solution.

Due to traps and lockups from Java 1.1.8 and Netscape 4.61, I've come to
the conclusion that Fixpack 40 never properly installed itself on my
computer. Of course, I tried reinstalling the fixpack (multiple times)
from an external Zip drive. But, whenever I tried to reinstall the
fixpack, all the OS2SERV program would do would be to archive the old
files to be patched on my C:\ drive, update the syslevel.os2 file, but
not access the Zip drive for the updated files to be installed. In
other words, archival would take place, but no update (except for
syslevel.os2) would occur. How can I force the fixpack to install the
updated files? I tried making up a response file, but the documentation
is not too clear and I gave up on that path. So, now I'm stuck. The
kicker is that the system is quite stable with very few crashes except
when using Java and other programs that seem to need FP40. I followed
all the advice in the Readme's in the Fixpack.

I can't downlevel because I deleted the older archives, and I'm
extremely reluctant to reinstall the entire operating system. The
puzzling thing is that the SYSLEVEL command and ver/r commands seem to
give different verion information (included below). Ver/r says it's the
base system, no fixpacks, but SYSLEVEL says it's up to Fixpack 40 (the
way I understand this). Or, is my system up-to-date and other problems
are causing the lockups? The file dates on the "fixed" files aren't
being updated to 1999 (the date of the fixpack).

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

If you don't want to convict the innocent, you have got to pay a
price. The price is to acquit a certain amount of guilty people. The

Just as installed by the plugin pack, and just as listed in the app
section of preferences. I am thinking it is a FN problem, as these are
bigger than the 8.3 FN of WinOS.

But, so far, the best way I have found to listen to RA stuff is to boot
Win98, and use the netscape there. It also seems 'crisper', but that may
have been because of hte number of things I had open in Warp.

Hey, that took some work to do that!

We could have just left it as a blank space, but figured it
would make re-sizing the window easier to have that extra
bit to grab onto. Sometimes Windows has good ideas.

What is DRAGON.DLL?!? That's not a part of our package.
Find out what that belongs to (a desktop enhancer) and
disable it... then see if the problem persists.

i finally figured out what the problen was. the readme instructions of
IDEDASD.EXE clearly said to make
backup of discette 1 and then update D1. i tried updating the backup instead,
until i realized that the installationprogram needed to recognize the serial
number of the original D1.

anyway thanks a bunch

John, I got this same result with beta2 IF I tried to use the mail or
news reader while the d/l was in progress. Haven't noticed it with
the GA, but I'll check ... Looks like that's fixed (at least here).
HTTP and FTP d/l then reading newsgroups resulted in 25-30% CPU usage
with lots of other 'stuff' going (memsize 4 result). Never saw any
other reports of this during the beta but I reported it.

I generally prefer to use wget or ncftp for my downloads, but one
thing that I've noticed in both Comm/2 v4.04 and v4.61 is that it
is not easy to "lift" the URL's from the download window. This
is not the case in linux, using Communicator 4.04, 4.08 or 4.61:
I can use the mouse to highlight the URL right in the download
window and then paste it directly into a command line in an
xterm. I haven't been able to do this with the OS/2 versions of
Communicator. The closest I've come is forcing the download to
appear in the browser window and then lifting the URL off URL bar
at the top of the window.

Wha???

I don't believe you said that.

Since Windows *only* resizes at that stupid little corner, the bozos of the
world need the reminder to "look here, dummy."

OS/2 resizes anywhere, or haven't you noticed? (I'm sure you have,
therefore can't figure out why you offered that answer.)

If the real estate is up for grabs, why not put a little red/green light
thingie there like ProNews has? Showing the status of *any* NS connections?
The light goes green when you click on a link to begin a new d/l, then when
*all* the connections have completed their work, it goes red?

Veddy OS/2, that would be. Sneak it in and we'll make you happy for Xmas if
you send us a mail drop.

Good luck,

Not my problem, but this is really depressing to hear about. I don't have
any DRAGON.DLL on *my* system, and I try to keep it tarted up with
"enhancers" like a Manila Jeepney bus. (If my desktop were a woman,

I've taken to unpacking the fixpacks with dskxtrct and then running

The service log usually contains sufficient information to find
out where things went wrong; it's usually a log file left from
a previous failed install.

Subj: can anyone help me deal with ring 0 trapdumps?

From: dhdurgee@digizen.ten

Since 19 September 1999 I have had three ring 0 trapdumps on my IBM Server
320 running Warp Server Version 4 Advanced with FixPak 35. I would like
to determine the cause of these trapdumps so I can correct the problem.
Two of these dumps occurred during the weekly IBMAV run while one occurred
when I was deleting a file on a Jaz drive. The IBMAV runs complete
successfully when the server re-boots after the trapdump is taken.

As the server has 64MB of RAM the dump is still 18MB zipped. I tried to
access the dump with the PMDF provided with Warp 4 but I don't
seem to have the proper files to analyze it, not that I have any
experience in doing this. I have managed to get the following out of the
latest trapdump:

Bzzzt, wrong !
Win9x resizes everywhere (just as Win3.x did). That "grab corner" is
mostly
eye candy (or trying to emulate the Mac, which *does* have such a corner
IIRC).

You might be right about the reminder, though.

OS/2 can't resize full-screen windows, unless you pull the window
to one side, or hit the [] button first. Communicator can.

Ding ding ding - we have a winner.

That is exactly what we were thinking when we put it there.

And I can't believe any of you guys would make comments about adding
Windows features to OS/2 since that is what most of those little apps

This doesn't work. When you create an entry under
the Applications setting, you are NOT PERMITTED to
leave the program name blank. If you create the
entry & come back later to blank the app field, that
removes the whole setting. See the details in
another post I put up here in comp.os.os2.bugs a
couple of days ago. There's multiple problems in
this area.

Well, Willy, we're both named Willy & I've been
reporting this issue since the February 12, 1999
release of 4.04 without success. So if you succeed,
I will be jealous. Jeffrey Kobal keeps saying that
it's more than he has resources to pursue. Well if
he can't. maybe there's somebody else at the Netscape
part of IBM who can. It's an issue. It's easy to
reproduce. I have posted excruciatingly detailed
descriptions of how to make it happen multiple times
in comp.os.os2.bugs. Search the archive at Deja
News. While you're there, you'll come across at
least a dozen other people reporting the same
problem.

Well, that DOES happen, but it's transitory. Once
the page is done rendering, a matter of a few
seconds, the data transmission resumes. That is, it
resumes if you switch focus to something other than a
browser instantiation. The CPU remains maxed out the
whole time, with teeny blips down here & there.

It's about to become worse. Or at least different.
I got the answer to something Mike Kaply hinted at in
another thread. Check out this URL:
http://www.ibm.com/ibmlink/usalets&parms=H_299-276

It seems IBM is "solving" the problem of us here in
Usenet, not by just going ahead & letting this be the
support channel, but by going in the opposite
direction: making NOTHING free any more.

Well, if I could get a PRICE on the Software Choice
subscription, I would know just how upset to get.
But they don't put their prices on the web. They
want you to speak to a human so they can prey on your
unwillingness to confront somebody & perhaps
disappoint them by saying no. A tendency I'm just
going to have to fight.

I suppose there is some merit in making us all pay
for this support through a software subscription.
Fund all this stuff. They can't do it all for free.
But if it's a few hundred bucks, that's gouging. If
it's maybe $30 or $50, then I would say IBM is
FINALLY making an effort to acknowledge & nurture the
small office/home office/home recreational user of
OS/2. Yeah. Fancy that. A home recreational user
of OS/2. It can happen.

But they haven't published their price schedule on
the web. Does anybody know what the single license
fee is? Do please post it here.

If you look at

you will see, at least on 9/29, you would see that whoever put the thing up

it was still 1998 and used Sept 29, 1998, a Tuesday, as the zip date. They
also
did not complete the transfer as g and h never made it. Maybe that is the rsu

I am only saying that what will cost on Software Choice are new products
(Java, TCP/IP, browser) that are added.

Serivce is not available from Software Choice.

The process we switched to with 4.04 is the new process.

We will NOT be refreshing Software Choice with 4.61a, 4.61b. 4.61c. They
will be available as FixPaks.

They will not cost any money.

I make no commitments about future browser development.

From: Irv Spalten <ispalten@us.ibm.com>

Subject FP's have been released.

Boulder did have a SPACE problem, and it appears that FP 12 ran into it.
We (IBM) are now going to be placing a 'header' file in the FTP
directory. For instance, you will see this in XR_W042

*
* Initial Release of OS/2 Warp 3 FP 42
* 09/30/99
* Diskette Images XR_W042.1DK to XR_W042.JDK
*

In XR_M012 you will see this :

*
* Initial Release of OS/2 Warp 4 FP 12
* 09/30/99
* Diskette Images XR_M012.1DK to XR_M012.HDK
* 09/30/99 1:30 PM CST
* Diskette Image XR_M012.FDK replaced, file was corrupt
*

These headers will be updated as we change any file for any reason.

We also know people look for new directories, and grab files. The
initial headers will now say uploading in progress or no
verified/incomplete, and then replaced with an official release date.

Except that in my experience IBM just throws the registrations away. Back
when telephone tech support was a reality, we discovered that each call had
to begin afresh with a new registration because the previous
registration(s) weren't accessable. Even when I provided the Customer ID
No. from my notes.

And despite multiple registrations of multiple Warp purchases, I've *NEVER*
received a single piece of mail or email back, not even advertising junk.

They throw it away, at this level, I'm sure. But I'd be happy to hear of
anyone else's experience that counterbalances mine.

By the way, as far as building useful statistics, their server logs show
them how many downloads occurred. (And even to what domains, if they think
someone's voting multiple times.) If they want to find out how popular
something is, all they have to do is read the logs, and they can take a
reading on that tonite if they want to.

Good luck,

Buddy

our access violations (error 3175) takes down ns4.61 not the entire
system. who is NOT getting this error? and what are they doing, or
have, that we aren't doing or don't have? we assume IBM is working on

If you are running OS/2, and did not register it, how on earth do
expect IBM to know that SOHO users actually do exist, and spent money
to buy their product? Likewise, it is a good idea to register Netscape
Communicator (look under Help). I might be a pain in the A**, but DO
IT!

I concur with this assesment. I am downloading the ne FP12, using
AWget to drive WGet. The download is proceeding at about 5300 CPS (as
indicated by both the IBM dialer, and IPSPEED). The CPU is at about 2%
(as measured by PMPatrol). I am doing news group things, with no
apparent interference, in either direction.

I find it very difficult to believe that you haven't tested this thing
under the conditions that most users use it under. How the H**L do you
expect to produce a working program, if you don't test it properly????
Surely, you can get, at least ONE, machine connected via a modem, or
has IBM's lack of OS/2 support already started to cut into the bottom
line?

I am not 100% sure, but this might be happening when you close
Netscape, then try to double click on a new (saved to hard disk) HTML
icon to open it in Netscape, before the original Netscape has managed
to shut down completely (tied into the slow shut down problem). This
doesn't always happen, and the severity of the problem seems to depend
on how far through the shutdown the original program has got.

I have just gone to the Netscape properties-> Window and turned on
Create new window, instead of Display existing window. This should
convince OS/2 to start up a whole new instance of the program, rather
than trying to piggy back on the old (not yet shut down) instance of
the program. It will take some experimenting, but I will let you know
what the results are.

Hope this helps...

Oh, OK... since you asked so nicely I'll send one along soon as the thing
craps out again (then again, you know what they say about "watched pots").
Sending it as an attachment to NS 4.61-generated e-mail OK?

I'll try to recognize the looping dump situation and C-A-D (by the way, it
takes TWO of those combinations!) quickly, before they start wrapping
(I allow 1MB for dumps, they run about 64KB each).

It is! You just need the right package. I don't remember which one, but
one of the packages at Hobbes and LEO misses all the OLE stuff. Get the
other one!
Hm, I think I remember now. The 1.25 version has the OLE stuff, but the
1.25a doesn't.

Sure is! Funny the way the harder IBM's marketering geniuses swat OS/2,
the more the techies in IBM try to help. You can see this with the
Netscape developers' presence in these newsgroups too. It really does
show that whatever we think and say about IBM "corporate", there's many
folks in IBM still on our side: they probably feel as badly about some
of this stuff as we do, it's their jobs after all.

That's because some of IBM doesn't want people like us using OS/2 any
more Bill. Jeff and co have done a great job with 4.61 in the main, but
the only reason we have been able to provide feedback is because some
of the developers choose to hang out on Usenet. Now that it is a real
product, we won't be able to report these bugs via the route you had
suggested to you.

So, exactly how do we report problems with IBM's flagship browser
without having a support contract? I'd love to know.

OK. FP12 is in here. Even though it says this in
README2:

APAR= JR13492
FP11 BREAKS PKZIP DUE TO D172229, UNZIPPING A FILE
WITH EA DATA CHANGES IT'S TIMESTAMP TO THE CURRENT
SYSTEM DATE/TIME.

The problem has actually been more widespread. Since
FP11, if you used drag'n'drop to copy or move a file,
or its popup context menu to do the same, or Alt+MB1
to rename it, or a number of other WPS operations on
a file -- HAVING NOTHING TO DO WITH PKZIP -- the file
would get its last update date & time set forward to
"now," whenever now happened to be. The equivalent
commands from an OS/2 window would NOT exhibit this
bug. THIS IS CURED!!!!!! HURRAY!!!! Thanks Irv,
Dick, Scott, whoever.

Another symptom of this bug was to intermittently
update a file's last update date/time just by
executing it. I found proof of that during
installation of FP12. It popped up a date/version
violation on PMSEEK.EXE, of all things. When I
checked, I discovered that the PMSEEK.EXE on my
system was last updated about 5:30 PM yesterday
afternoon. EXCUSE ME? I don't think so! That may
have been a recent time I executed it, but I can
assure you I didn't update it. After allowing
SERVICE to replace that with the one out of the Fix
Pack, it reverted to 07/27/1999 11:58.
Interestingly, it didn't change size. And a careful
inspection of the README.1ST files from both FP11 &
FP12 shows the file WAS updated from FP11 to FP12.
In any case, this self-updating behavior by simply
executing an executable will be harder to verify
whether it too has been cured. I have perhaps half a
dozen or a dozen files in my system that suffered
this fate, among them, ironically, SERVICE.EXE. It
was something that occurred very irregularly, and not
every time these files were executed. Just to be
complete, here's what I have:

 7-09-99 5:34p 329,696 261 a--- SERVICE.EXE
 7-01-99 2:34p 665,450 277 a--- cs_141.exe

cs_141.exe is the Fix Tool package I downloaded from
the maintenance repository. SERVICE.EXE came from
INSIDE there. Obviously, something strange happened
once FP11 was applied. But it didn't happen tonight
running SERVICE under FP11 to apply FP12. Like I
said, intermittent. Let's hope that's solved now.

There's 2 APARs listed about memory leaks in
PMMERGE.DLL & PMDDEML.DLL. Those sound important.
Let's hope those really are cured. I also read some
APARs that deal with dragging & resizing windows.
Maybe those will affect those bugs people have been
reporting about the browser.

Haven't created new Emergency Boot Diskettes yet. It
will be interesting to see how that advertised cure
works. The simple solution is, of course, to either
move AIC7870.ADD elsewhere or rename it, create the
diskettes, then restore it.

APAR= JR13504
SYS3175 IN VARIOUS APPS DUE TO FREED SHARED OBJECTS.

Could this be our browser problem?

It would be nice if items in multiple maintenance
streams would acknowledge each other. I'm referring
specifically to the code pages & the LIB*.DLL &
TRUETYPE.DLL & other files that are updated by both
base system Fix Packs and Java. Java 1.1.8 came out
about 2 months ago now. Fix Pack 12 came out just
today. That puts the burden on the Fix Pack folks to
put the Java versions of those files in the Fix Pack
so there's no spurious or possibly damaging updates
made by applying a Fix Pack. If you truly aren't
updating the file from what Java installed, then make
sure your file date/time stamp & internal version
stamp match what went out with Java. And if you're
worried about people who didn't install Java, well,
they won't be hurt by getting those versions of these
files, will they? I mean, clearly, these files
aren't unique or specific to Java. They were already
in my system before I ever installed any of the Java
packages from the maintenance FTP site. I just hate
having to carry that sort of useless junk around in
my memory, that there's these files updated by Java &
I have to protect them against the Fix Packs,
depending on the timing.

Otherwise, it's too soon to say what's better or
worse in FP12. It will take a few days before I've
tried out everything I do frequently. But so far it
doesn't appear to have broken anything or caused any
disasters. My E-mail (JStreet Mailer as located at
http://paul.vankeep.com/jstreet) still works. Which
means Java still works. And I'm here posting at Deja
News so Communicator still works. Which means the
dialer & some fraction of TCP/IP still work.

Oh. Irv, you'll be pleased to hear this. I started
up a command line FTP session, CD to the RSU
directory, did MGET x*, and went out. When I got
back home about 4 hours later, ALL THE FILES HAD
ARRIVED WITHOUT ERROR! Looks like it took about 2
hours 45 minutes to transfer the lot of them. This
is a pleasant first. Let's hope it's not a last.

I did not do an RSU install. I applied the FP while
my system was offline. I unzipped those files
manually onto my hard drive & installed the Fix Pack
reading between the lines of the instructions in
Section 6 in the README for the Fix Tool. As I've
done for the past 2 or 3 FPs. The instructions used
to be in the README, didn't they? Well, here they
are again:

1. I have a directory on my hard drive named
E:\Corrective Service
WARP 4 Fix Pack 12
That's right, it's got blanks & occupies 2 lines.
This is the directory into which I FTPed the .ZIP
files from the RSU directory at
service.boulder.ibm.com.
2. I unzipped all 17 .ZIP files into this directory.
This created a directory tree of
E:\Corrective Service
WARP 4 Fix Pack 12\fix with more directories below
that.
3. Shut down, reboot with + signs in my CONFIG.SYS to
do the required CHKDSK.
4. Take the + signs out of my CONFIG.SYS so my Locked
File Device Driver boot doesn't accidentally try to
do a CHKDSK with half-maintained CHKDSK modules.
6. Run this command script:

SET CSFUTILPATH=E:\KICKER
SET CSFCDROMDIR=E:\Corrective Service!!WARP 4 Fix
                                              Pack 12
CD E:\KICKER
SERVICE

(Sorry about the line break on the SET CSFCDROMDIR
line; that's Deja News doing that. It's 1 line in
the script.)

(I have the Fix Tool installed in the directory
E:\KICKER.)
7. Shut down, reboot, watch Locked File Device Driver
run & automatically reboot.
8. Enjoy a beautifully maintained WARP 4 at FP12.

Hardly sounds like an OS/2 problem <g> so why posting it
also to os2.bugs and os2.apps? But let me give it a try. Is
Win not automatically substituting fonts if it does not find the
requested font on the machine it runs on? Perhaps the font
in use at the good-looking machine (yuk, can hardly believe
seeing myself writing that its Windows after all <VBG>) is not
on the other machine? So Windows do's a bad job substituting?

Subj: Unwanted Use of NS 4.61 Disk Cache

From: Jim Stuyck <jstuyck@home.com>

I have the NS 4.61 disk cache set to "0" (why? I like it that way!).
Nevertheless,
"stuff" gets put into the CACHE subdirectory (things like the README.1ST
file from FixPak 12, which I just installed). That "stuff" isn't removed when
I clear the cache. What I do, from time to time, is "DEL ....\CACHE" which
REALLY cleans that sucker out. Figuring out what that "stuff" is, and where
it comes from, is made difficult due to the nasty naming convention, but
that's
not a real problem.

This isn't a new development: Happened the same way with NS 4.04.

Seems like a "bug" to me.

All platforms work like that (Mac and Win xx). Could be a bug or maybe
it just absolutely needs to store some stuff.

Subj: 16-bit Windows Plugins non-functional

From: Bill "Wild Willy" Kredentser <wwilly@one.net>

Using WARP 4, FP12, DDFP1, WR08620, IP08412, Java
1.1.8+1999/09/19 update, Communicator 4.61, PlugPack
3.0.

I installed, de-installed, and re-installed the 3.0
Plugin Pack I made VERY sure I selected the 16-bit
Windows option as well as the other 2. I watched the
installation status window very carefully & I did see
the message about the 16-bit plugins flash by.

But it's not listed in the about:plugins list. It
also doesn't work. I've found a couple of sites with
Real Video files on the web page as plugins: the
Dilbert site & (of all places) the New England
Patriots web site. I get one of those icons that
looks like a piece from a jigsaw puzzle that says to
click here to get the plugin. When I do, I get a
small browser window with a button that says click
here to get the plugin. So I do. The small window
closes & a new full-size browser instantiation
launches. That pulls up the plug-in finder at the
Netscape web site. But it claims it can't find any
plugin for the MIME type of
audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin.

I suppose the audio/video streams at those sites are
actually G2 so I'm out of luck for playing them
anyway. But that should be reported to me after the
browser at least attempts to launch the Real Player
in a little window embedded in the web page.
Instead, I'm seeing behavior that says I don't have
the 16-bit Windows plugin support at all.

Just for information:

Total files listed:
        7 file(s) 178,144 bytes used

This shows I've got the right directory structure
with the right directory names, 8 characters or
shorter, and I really do have the Real Audio 16-bit
plugin (as well as the Quick Time plugin). I don't
know what other modules I need where. I have some
INET*.DLLs in MMOS2\DLL. I have a
E:\COMMUNIC\PROGRAM\PBROWSER.EXE. I have a
E:\COMMUNIC\PROGRAM\PLUGINS\NPPROXY.DLL. Both those
Windows plugins in the WIN16\PLUGINS subdirectory are
duplicated in the main PLUGINS directory. I vaguely
recall that was advice offered here months ago. I
have a E:\COMMUNIC\PROGRAM\winplug.reg that reads:

1 E:\COMMUNIC\PROGRAM\WIN16\PLUGINS\NPQTW16.DLL
1 E:\COMMUNIC\PROGRAM\WIN16\PLUGINS\NPRA16.DLL

But I vaguely recall someone saying that used to be
required by 2.02 but not 4.04. Well, I still have
it.

I have explicitly tested the native OS/2 plugins for
DSMI & Acrobat Reader & they both work fine. The
about:plugins page does list all the expected native
OS/2 audio & video plugins.

Right. Things I've seen in there are cascading style
sheets, Javascripts, and temporary copies of files
downloaded via HTTP (as opposed to FTP). But it's
usually only a handful of files compared to what
would be there if you specified a meaningful disk
cache size. Which, as I said, I don't do either.
Why? To save the disk activity, both during surfing
& when closing the browser. So manually emptying the
directory from time to time seems to be the remedy.
Which doesn't seem to hurt anything.

Ummmmm......... John, I was only responding to your
humorous comment. I never use the browser for
E-mail. I am philosophically opposed to the concept.
I believe a browser should browse, not do E-mail or
Usenet. I believe an E-mail client should do E-mail,
not browsing or Usenet. I believe a news client
should do Usenet, not browsing or E-mail. So I wish
Communicator came with a packaging option that would
allow me to install just the browsing functionality
without the E-mail & Usenet components.

What I think. Clearly, most people don't agree with
me. Some do, I know, since I've read this opinion
being expressed by others a number of times here.
But most people must disagree with that opinion.
Otherwise, why would all that added functionality,
what I would call unneeded, unwanted functionality,
what I would call bloat, why would it all be in the
product?

I admit this post is completely off topic, but you
did ask. I hope somebody does actually help you with
your problem.

There's 2 problems:

1. CPU rockets to 100% during loading of web pages.
2. We can't report bugs without a support contract.

I hope you're not working on both, Mike, since
there's just one of you & we don't want to burn you
out, I hope the one you're working on is problem #1,
since I suspect problem #2 is a short path to cardiac
problems.

We did that, to try to track down the aborted-download

You shouldn't have to uninstall FP38 prior to reinstalling your WinOS2
support, however I suggest that *after* you reinstall WinOS2 you
re-install FixPak 38. This will guarante that any Win-OS2 files updated
since your CD was burned will be at the FixPak 38 level along wiht the
rest of your system.

OS/2 native Real Player G2 plugin for Communicator, native Flash etc.
would be worth something to me. Paying for software and updates is
fine with me - if the cost is within my SOHO budget, like IBM
Antivirus subscriptions, PMFax, DualStor, In-Joy dialer and the other
nice applications I've bought.

Same kind of bug (?):

Normal 3 panel layout of Comm/2 newsreader.
Select a message that has a news:some.message.id link in it.
Click the link.
Select reply.
Reply goes to the original message, not the one I'm viewing

Workaround for both (and the Danish spellchecker bug):

Settings | Mail and News | Formatting -> Use HTML editor when replying to
message, instead of the plain text one. Make sure that posts to usenet is
sent in plain text (settings on same page).
