Subj: Installation of Real Audio in Netscape

From: "Jan Hartman" <jan.hartman@fil.lu.se>

Hi!

I would like to get Real Audio to work in my Netscape (4.61).
I have been informed that I need to install the 16bit version in
Win-OS/2. Is this correct?

I do not have Win-OS/2 installed, however, and I would like to
know if it would be possible to take the needed dll:s and copy
them to the appropriate plugin directory in Netscape. If this is
possible, how do I get my hands on those dll:s?

Yes, unfortunately, this ist correct. And it only works if Netscape is
installed in a path, which is compliant to the 8+3 DOS filename and
directory limitation.

How do you think this should work? In which environment shall these
DLLs run? There is no other way than to install WinOS/2 support and
finally RealAudio 16bit. Sorry to disappoint you :-(

Try:
System Setup-> Multimedia Setup-> Compact disk-> second page (the +
sign, in the upper right corner), and make sure the drive letter is
correct.

Hope this helps...

A long shot, but worth mentioning: If you have a Pioneer CD player you may
need to re-apply the patch that enables CD-DA access. On Hobbes (forget
which directory) as pioneer.zip. The symptoms you describe are exactly
those I encountered using a Pioneer drive. Of course, there are plenty of
other possible reasons...

Have you tried a simple CHKDSK X: ?

The same thing happened to me recently, and running chkdsk on the drive
cured it instantly. Probably some bad bit had crept somewhere.

Subj: Theta Band Software releases MMPACK

From: madbrain@thetaband.com

[sorry if you get this announcement twice, but there seemed to be
some problems with our ISP's news server last week]

Theta Band Software announces the release of MMPACK

Theta Band Software, an OS/2-only software vendor, announces the
immediate availability of the Multimedia PACK. The MMPACK is a
collection of three software programs that enhance the multimedia
features of OS/2 Warp. Anyone who uses multimedia in OS/2 is sure to
find at least one of these programs of value.

The first program is NPDSMI 2.0, an update to the free NPDSMI Netscape
plug-in already available from Theta Band Software's web site. NPDSMI
1.0 allowed users of Netscape Navigator and Communicator for OS/2 to
play various music files through the web browser. This update adds
support for compressed module files, which are becoming more and more
popular.

The second program is an MPU-401 device driver. This device driver
provides support for playing MIDI files with any MPU-401 compatible
sound card. It acts as a replacement for the MPU-401 driver provided
by IBM and Crystal Semiconductor, and it includes several new features,
such as MIDI recording without needing an IRQ and DOS sharing support.

The third program is MMCHECK, a command-line utility which checks your
multimedia setup for problems. OS/2's multimedia support, aka MMPM/2,
is very sensitive to the contents of one file, MMPM2.INI. MMCHECK
scans MMPM2.INI and reports any errors. If an error is found, Theta
Band Software's technical support will help you fix the problem.

The MM PACK was in thorough beta testing for a year, and the release is
moderately priced at $35. It comes with free updates to any 1.x
releases as well as one year of e-mail technical support. It can be
purchased and downloaded from Theta Band Software's web site at
http://www.thetaband.com . Theta Band Software will also demonstrate
MMPACK at Warpstock'99.

From: nate@lcs.mit.edu (Nathan Liskov)

Well - the specs look good (supports winos2 and os2 sound) - but I
can't get it to work. With all the drivers installed, my computer
hangs on bootup with

an internal processing error at #00168:fff5279c-00e:c7ac on a black
screen with various register values that i don't know how to
interpret.

This happens on 3 different os/2 partitions i have on my system, each
in a different state of mmos2 programs. I can boot with all bu three
of the drivers loaded - but there is no sound. Also, with the
remaining drivers loaded i tend to get the internal processing error
screen upon shutdown or setboot /b. This then requires a chkdsk of
various paritions on the next bootup.

I glad to know that someone has this card working ok, but i don't know
how.

	Good luck,

I just dealt with this issue today.

I have Win-OS/2 installed and I downloaded and installed Real Player
completely as instructed in the various "readme's." Still, though, I get
now response from RA when I click on a link to an audio file. Even if I
point RA to a specific file on the WWW, it tells me that the link/file is
not a RA file.

Any ideas what I've done wrong or incompletely?

Do I have to be running Netscape for Win 3.1 under Win-OS/2 to get RA to
play?

Thanks.

Greg

OS/2 seems to play DAT files ok as long as you get some windoze user to

From: "zeppelin@gte.net" <zeppelin@gte.net>

Sinan,

As the originator of this thread, let me just say that I was very suprised at
the response that was generated as a result of my original post. I received
numerous e-mail responses that did not post here.

Several recall the survey that I responded to, but alas, the "due to
overwhelming
demand" reply I got was definitely a one of a kind hoax. Curses to hoaxters
and
spammers alike, they blow!

Anyway, I unfortunately, do not compile. You, luckily do, evidently.

Personally, I'd pay a reasonable price for an SB-Live driver that didn't
"hose"
other parts of my system, especially if it worked reliably in DOS Games, and
Win-OS2 sessions, and gave me access to all those cool I/O ports of the
SB-Live

Since you appear to work for a bona-fied software company, I suggest the
following:

1. to avoid confusion of issues, start your own thread in this group, re:
<providing SB-Live driver for OS/2> or similar concept.

2. make the responses fit a mold similar to "people who would sign-up for (and
pay for) a supported SB-live/2 drivers set

3. your response will probably dwarf mine since you propose to DO something
about
the problem, take the response to your company and see if you can solicit
their
"official " support for your project.

4 take this support back to creative for a second try. Creative is really
pissed
at IBM over whatever happened a few years back causing the original rift. With
IBM doing everything it can to kill OS/2 on the private desktop, creative will
probably think hard about bending for you, just as a snub towards IBM

5. sign me in as the first signatore on your petition, I'm ALL for YA!!!

Good luck!!

Anyone ever have such a problem before? You're installing Quick Motion/2
installation goes fine (this is on a Warp 4 box ...course, I havent
applied a fixpack yet but it went successfully BEFORE!), upon rebooting
(AS IT SUGGESTS), you find yourself UNABLE to play any quick time
files?! There a quick (and hopefully) painless way of perhaps getting it
to uh...BE able to play quick times?!

I've uh...re-ran the installation twice...I just cant really figure out
why it would screw up like this really...

ANY ideas ...for anyone who actually reads this message :)

Yes, it has that chipset (and it's actually the very card I'm
interested in), but I don't know if the drivers work with it.

Pleasepleaseplease test them and report the result.

I got one here, for a measly $38CDN.
I ripped out my old SB32 PnP and shoved in the AW320. I ran the AW320
install without bothering to remove the SB32 drivers :)

Re-boot, and apart from the errors about a missing SB32, it seems to work
fine, but for:
- Startup sound didn't come on (but that maybe due to my "dirty" install)
- No OS/2 MIDI (!!!??? What??), but it says so right in the README. MIDI
will be coming for future release. MIDI works fine in Win-OS/2 though...

I haven't done much testing with it yet, I'm shelving it for now until the
new drivers with OS/2 MIDI come out.

Sure seems to work fine here. Even the VideoCD player that came with
Netscape.
Quality wise, it leaves much to be desired compared to the Win9x

Nope, you do not have to have a Win-OS/2 version of Netscape. I
know the various readme's on the 'net say do not let it search
your drive for installed versions of Netscape. I have found that
this is incorrect - let it do so, so it can install a driver in
the WIN16\PLUGINS Netscape subdirectory.

Also, you will want to double check that you have DOS TCP/IP
support installed, i.e. the following lines in your config.sys:

DEVICE=C:\MPTN\BIN\VDOSTCP.VDD
RUN=C:\MPTN\BIN\VDOSCTL.EXE

These files should have dates of at least 1997. If you have TCP/IP
4.1 (maybe even the latest 4.0 stack), then you are "good to go".

Also, check for these lines in your AUTOEXEC.BAT:

PATH=C:\OS2;C:\OS2\MDOS;C:\;C:\OS2\MDOS\WINOS2;C:\TCPIP\dos\bin;
SET ETC=C:\TCPIP\DOS\ETC

BTW, what is your sound card, and what video card do you have??
(the Matrox drivers are no good here - I have to use the GRADD
drivers or RealAudio won't load from a Netscape session).

Your "quick'n'dirty" install left references to the soundblaster
card in your MMPM2.INI file as well as the load of the
drivers in CONFIG.SYS. You will have to edit the
MMPM2.INI file to remove the soundblaster references
before OS/2 will properly use the card.

If you need help post the MMPM2.INI file (it's in
\MMOS2 and I can help with what has to be removed.

Does the driver support Full Duplex and RTMIDI? Is it possible to use
both internal and external MIDI? Is there some sort of mixer program?

What does this mean in practice? No RTMIDI (hopefully not)?

I guessed that we would "only" have 64 notes hardware polyphony and
not the 128 in software, but what else lacks? The virtual acoustic
synth?

The price has just dropped to appx. $100 (685 dkr) at the local
dealer, so I'm very tempted to buy one if it works here as well.

Be sure to do the FP install AGAIN, after you reinstall the MMOS/2
stuff, or you can end up with problems.

Could be a piece of dust floating around inside the drive. Open the
drawer, and look inside. If there is dust, you may need to remove the
drive cover (there is a warning about LASER eye damage, so make sure
it is powered OFF) and vacuum it out (don't let the vacuum cleaner
actually touch the drive). Use a small paint brush to loosen any
sticky dust, and try not to push on anything too hard. Before you get
too carried away, look, carefully, to see if anything might come loose
while you are doing the cleaning.

Also, look for the small cable that runs between the drive and the
sound card to make sure that it isn't falling off.

Hope this helps...

Thanks. I will give that a try. I did see something in the readme,
but I understood it to be referring to drivers from ess in Taiwan. I
had gotten those drivers and continued to have the same problem. I'll

I'm aware of the later versions for OS/2 but there is only one
designated for X11 on Hobbes. I don't have the tools or the knowledge
to compile the source from later versions under XFree86/X11.

Are you saying that I can run the OS/2 native code under XFree86?

Will installing the OS/2 version 5.50 solve the "Can't find the

Theres a bit of a problem with the ess1868 and 69 cards in that the
drivers are really no longer homegious for Warp3 and Warp4. Warp 3
with FP30+ needs the old files with the device driver from the above
pack to work, Warp 4 needs the above pack only.

Even so, its a bit unstable with the more recent fixpacks. I remember
reading somewhere that there was a bug in the original drivers from
ESS and this bug did not surface until one of the later fixpacks.

It also ocurred to me that I had tried installing the dd fixpack (I
believe xr_d001) after installing at various times fp8, fp10, and fp
11 but that it had caused a trap on booting with an error that
PROTSHELL pointed to an invalid file, some file with an extension of
.122, a name that doesn't even appear on my fp8 level installation but
was present when the error appeared. Maybe if I muster together
enough time and patience I will try installing the dd fixpack again,
though I suspect I might be smarter to ditch the card and buy one with
more reliable drivers.

Can you explain the way you made it? I also took from lokal retailer SV
550 PCI card with Yamaha 724 chip
(have to give it back, if not working in OS/2 4.0) , then took from
somewhere PCIYMF.EXE file with
device driver for OS2, did all from reassume file... and nothing! System
didn't recognized card, and no
sound at all! In readme file I saw that for card installation I need:
1.hardware (PCI card)
2. Software:
a) PCI Yamaha YMF724 (DS-1) driver
b) MMPM/2

What is MMPM/2 ? Have I it and where can I get it?

When I recently put in ISA slot one ESS 688 card, after alt-F1, and F5,
when I tried OS/2 System,-->
System Setup--> Install/Remove --> Selective Install, In box Multimedia,
stand ESS688.
In case with Yamaha (actually SV 550 with Yamaha 724 chip), in
Multimedia box was nothing!
I am not OS/2 expert so please explain the way you (or somebody from
community)
made it

Thanks at front!

Subj: CDR & CDRW Problems

From: "Lee Kravitz" <lee at diebold>

I am trying to get CDRecord/2 to work on my 320 Server with a Yamaha
CDRW4416 SXZ external drive. I think I have installed all the software
pieces/parts correctly per Chris Wohlgemuth's page:

http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Sector/5785/cdrecord/cdrecordmain.htm

I have EMX runtime, ASPIROUT.SYS, MKISOFS, etc.

However, after I apparently write to the CD (using CDWrite 1.2 front
end), I can't get to any of the files. I get a sys0026 error (drive not
formatted properly). I get this for both CDR & CDRW media.
I have also tried the MAKEDISC.CMD feature in the MKISOFS directory.

A novice at this needs help!

Thanks,
Lee

PS- Using CDRTOOLS blanking feature seems to work on CDRW. I get 'sector not
found' after using it.
