Did you install the virtual DOS network support?

Using the scanpci program, I determined that my 3Com card was using IRQ11

Subj: Questions on the Xircom CEM56-100BTX

From: Doug Henning <dhennin@ibm.net>

Hope anyone can be of assistance. I am attempting to install the Xircom
CEM56-100BTX (I believe this is the card I am trying to install, is
says on the back of the card CEM56-100) PCMCIA Network/Modem Card in
Warp4 on an IBM TP 380 ED. In using the xem100_1.exe driver package
from the Xircom site I extract the files and appear to load it okay in
MPTS. The card services appears to see the card okay, but identifies as
a modem. When I restart, it identifies the Xircom card, but does not
appear to initialize it. I get no link light, and the DHCP server that
I am attempting to link to on a NT4 network will not initialize as well.
(It times out after a long pause) TCP/IP services appears to be
installed properly, but no IP connectivity via DHCP. What am I
missing? Are there additional params in MPTS that I need?

It works great as modem however. No problems there. I would greatly
appreciate any
assistance you can give. I am a lone OS/2 certified engineer on Warp4
swamped in a sea
of M$ at my work. I want to get this thing working on my TP so that I
can show my M$
associates how "kick-ass" OS/2 can really be!

I got the info from the Notebook/2 site that this card works well. I
have also posted this message to contact person for the above site as
well.

Subj: Installing Peer

From: Charles Hakari <hakari@gci.net>

I have been using OS/2 since 1994, but I haven't had the need for
networking until now. After I installed v4, I removed all unneed
networking statements from my config.sys and have been happily accessing
the internet with a modem. Now I would like to network the computers at
home but can't get Peer to install. I get a sys3175 access violation,
LAPSMOD.DLL, error D. Since this file isn't on my machine, I assume I am
going to have to install something else first, but I don't know where to
start. If I have to completely reinstall the networking, that is O.K.
Again, I don't know where to start. Any suggestions would be
appreciated.

From: madodel@ptdprolog.net (Mark Dodel)

I've seen the Error D before, but in a different module. For a
clearer idea of why it's failing look in
C:\IBMINST\LOGS\LOCINSTU\LOCAL.L2 file.

If you have ever updated the TCP/IP stack or MPTS then you can't use
the basic peer install off the Warp 4 CD. you either have to
uninstall MPTS(which use to be LAPS didn't it?) or use the CID peer
install ( x:\CID\IMG\IBMPEER\PEERRMT.EXE install program on the Warp 4
CDROM. ) which asks if you want to install MPTS over the newer version
(just say NO).

The other thing to watch out for with peer is that all liens in your
config.sys have to be less then 256 characters.

Good Luck
Mark

Subj: Java 1.18 Clobbers Netscape

From: "Casey Bralla" <NewsReader@NerdWorld.org>

I just upgraded my Java to the most recent 1.18. Now Netscape is clobbered.
It cannot do a DNS lookup, complaining about no DNS entry. If I type in an
IP address, it works just fine. Running nslookup from an OS/2 Window works
fine too, so I know the DNS setup is still good.

I've tried re-installing Netscape 4.04, but no avail.

Anybody got any suggestions?

The element that prevented a successful logon: WINS. I had (for some
reason) enabled the WINS client and selected "Use DNS server for WINS".
This apparently pre-disposes winNT to ignore DNS, or expects to get
information from DNS server that does not exist. Whatever. When that
stuff was turned off, NT logged on quite comfortably.

Thanks to all for you advice and suggestions.

How did you make this upgrade? What version did you have before?

I upgraded mine yesterday from the last build (may 99 I think) and
everything is working perfectly.

What kind of trouble? Erratic response? None at all?
If none at all, check that your routing table has an entry to the
frame releay connection.
Also check the "Metric Count" setting. You might need to increase to
something like 3 or 5. (Metric Count is the number of hops before giving
up locating a host.)

I run NS2.02, and Comm4.04, and I updated to JAVA 1.1.8, when it first
came out. No problems. I just did the JAVA 1.1.8 update, with no
problems.

The DNS lookup sounds more like something in the dialer went AWOL.
Which dialer are you using? Most are supposed to update the DNS
address in the Netscape program, when the connection is made.

Hope this helps...

From: cbrace@lim.nl (Colin Brace)

Hello all,

Last week my harddisk crashed and I am in the process of rebuilding my system.
but am having trouble getting the network component working again.

On a brandnew HD, I installed FP6 on top of the base Warp 4. Updated MTPS to
08610 and TCPIP to 4.02t.

Dialup via COM2: with In-Joy, the PPP dialer, works fine. The TCPIP stack
seems to be correctly set up.

But I can't seem to get a connection going now across my network card
(RTL8029). The DOS diagnostic program says the card is fine. Booting, OS/2,
the network card driver loads fine. But DHCP can't find the host. (I've
activated the interface in the TPCIP notebook and added the name of my ISP's
nameserver.)

I have a cable network connetion which worked flawlessly for more than a year
with more or less the same OS/2 configuration, but now I can't seem to get it
working again. Anyone have any suggestions?...

Yes. Assuming this is Warp 4, nslookup uses \mptn\etc\resolv2 (at
least on my system), while other commands, including ping, use
resolv in the same directory. Dialers (DOIP, InJoy) always update
resolv, but may not update resolv2. Clients get the DNS address
from one of these files. You might try a ping to separate the
Java/browser issue from the DNS problem. For example, ping
www.ibm.com.

Peter

Subj: Warp 4 on TP 390E (With W/98)

From: Mike Hammock <mhammoc@ibm.net>

I just got a Thinkpad 390E and am trying to install Warp4 on it. I have

w/98 on it (pre-installed) and have used PartitionMagic to lay out the
disk (6.4MB) as:
    Bootmanager (6MB)
    C: Win/98 2000MB Physical Partition
    D: Warp 305MB Logical Partition
    E: Windows data (FAT32) 2000MB Logical Partition
F: OS/2 Data rest of the disk Logical Partition

 I have the replacement install disks (1 & 2).

When I boot the install disks and take the 'advanced install'
option ( to put OS/2 on the D: partition), it brings up
FDISK with a message that "DISK 1 partition info may be corrupted"
(or something like that). FDISK only shows C partition then all others
as one large partition... I can't find a way to force it to properly
recognize the partitions (without deleting everything... which I can't
do now...). Win/98 FDISK seems to understand the layout (except
for F: which is HPFS formatted)

 Any suggestions??

Thanks,
Mike

Do you think you've posted in enough newsgroups? Which one would like an
answer in? The short answer is that installing Java can't cause this, so
something else has happened. Try posting more details to just one
newsgroup.

You should do a ftp to the proxy machine. Then, when the "Internet
Gate>" prompt appears, enter the address (username@site) that you want
to access. HTH.
