Subj: NS4.61b2--sys3175 has evaporated

From: jkovacs@ibm.net (Joe Kovacs)

The NS4.61b traps with sys3175 are gone here. The
popuplog.os2 stays perfectly clear of traps due to NS.

I had a lot of traps with sys3175, with NS4.61b1, Java
1.01(?). Warp 4, FP11, stock tcp/ip and mptn and all.

Now it's still the same Warp 4.11, stock tcp/ip. And it's
NS4.61b2, Java 1.18 and the mptn has been upgraded with
wr08620. Somewhere along the way the SYS3175 traps evaporated.

The swap file has been set to 10240 B for a month now and I
catch hints that it lifts off that when NS starts, but I
haven't seen it. It stays right on that when NS etc. are
running, and if it ever does lift off, it goes right back
below it.

All very nice. Several weeks ago the swapper ran at 80--95 MB
and wasn't much coming down.

IBM PS/2 9595, Type 4 P60, 64 MB of RAM, XGA-2 running an IBM
8514 monitor. One SCSI w/cache, 2 main HDs, swapper alone on
a third.

And that's all the correlation I have, to present.

From: Matthew Shapiro <matthew@nope.psych.mcgill.ca>

Just a note of thanks to all the folks who contributed the information that
helped me
get my dell-233 inspiron running. Now it all works--pcmcia modem, video
(1024x768), sound, and parallel port zip-100 drive (which, BTW, is much faster
than with DOS98). The machine is finally useful and stable.

All I have to figure out now is why I have ghost drives under os/2 and how to
get fat32 access to work properly.

Yes, just had the same problem yesterday. Go to your java temp install
directory and look for a file, whose exact name escapes me right now,
but is something like "d_????.cmd". It's nothing more than about a
half-a-dozen lines of "clfi ?????" Look for the for the line that has
"WSOD" in it. About third from the bottom. Delete it. Then follow the
instructions in the readme for recovering from a failed installation.
Be sure to reboot. Re-run install and it should successfully complete.

From: "K.K.Cheung" <kkc@nikoyo.com>

I would like to ask if I can make the full set of floppy isntall disk?
As my notebook don't not come with build-in cd-rom, and I found out that
OS2 can't use pcmcia CD-Rom for installation. In the \diskimgs\os2\35\
directory, there are only first install disk image. How can I found out
the remaining diskes? I'd tried the os2image directory, but the data
file is 1.7Mb, I can't put it into a floppy.

Thank you,

No, what "we" are saying is that using the WPS drag/drop limits
what the application can do while dragging, so we had to choose
between limiting drag/drop capability or limiting functionality in
the browser. We chose to keep the internal browser functionality
and handle dragging to the WPS ourselves.

> Someone should speak up to protect OS/2 in this regard.

Protect OS/2? From what? Producing a browser for the OS/2
platform so that the customers that are funding the continued
existence of the operating system will be able to utilize current
Internet technologies seems to me like the best way to "protect
OS/2"... wouldn't you agree?

> It seems to me that Netscape should be improved ... [snip]

Ok, if you wish to turn this into a Netscape-bashing discussion,
I'll move right along. I was attempting to provide potentially
information to a user that was having a problem, not open up
the floor for picking apart the entire project.

> to the point where it doesn't crash itself, or OS/2.

Whenever I'm home visiting my parents... before I leave the
house, my mom always tells me to "drive safely". Of course,
this is completely silly advice, since I obviously would want to
be driving safely anyway.... it's not like I'm going to say, "Oh,
WOW! I didn't THINK of that! Thanks, Mom, I will!" She does
it, however, because she cares about my safety.

On the same token, your advice to us that we produce a
product that doesn't crash is equally frivolous. Obviously, we
don't want the browser to crash, and we do what we can to
ensure that doesn't happen. And your "reminder" as such
serves to show that YOU care about the quality of our product
as well.

However, just getting on the road in the car has some level
of danger to it... with the dangers increasing with the duration
and complexity of the drive. The same is true of developing
a complex piece of software. (Yes, I realize I've violated the
taboo metaphor of computers and cars, and I apologize for
that.)

Subj: Netscape 4.61 printing problem

From: baden@unixg.ubc.ca (Baden Kudrenecky)

I am TOTALLY bafflemated now! Summarising:

   Everything used to work well.

Yesterday, I did a Selective Install for MMPM, trying
(foolishly) to get the VB.EXE installed. I then booted Solaris,
and tried, unsuccessfully, to get my networking going. When I
re-booted OS/2, had I lost my "Desktop", for some reason, and I
had to build (many hour excursion) a new one.

I also reinstalled FP_40, as I had done a "Selective
Install", which may have originally screwed up my "Desktop".

   Today, I successfully printed:

copy job \\UNC_name
from EPM
from WebExplorer
from HotJava
from Netscape 2.02
from Netscape 4.61 with another printer driver (IBM Null)

I cannot print from Netscape 4.61 Beta2 to the Laserjet
driver 30.453. I have TOTALLY re-installed Netscape 4.61, and
reviewed the printer settings ad nauseam, but the output to file
is continuously '0 bytes'

bafflemated!

Hi,

I'm not disputing this!! .. and I'm afriad I can;t reboot at the
moment to check it... so take what I say with a pinch of salt:-(

But when I was looking to buy my current printer (640) I got
the poor salesman at PCworld, to reboot all his windoze
machines and boot into DOS. I then took all the printers
that could print from "dir>lpt1" and then decided
which machine I wanted! (Was a close call between
Lexmark 5700 and Epson stlys 640!!

With hindsight I wish i'd have bought the Lexmark!!
But that;s another story!!

(Pardon my french but if "that are funding" refers to the multi-desk buyers
that IBM has chosen to address themselves to, then screw'em. WE here all
paid for and committed to an Operating System, fully expecting a respected
company like IBM to stand behind their half of the transaction. IBM has

No, not completely.

If the "current Internet technology" means sending news and mail via HTML,
or, worse, dancing noisy pictures, or attaching those dumb "business cards"
nobody has found a legitimate use for, then why waste time on that?

I don't think adding in lots of code for purely Netscape bells and whistles
is ever going to make up for the fact we won't have an identical browser to
what a User on another platform has. Without the most common plugins, for
instance, starting with current Real Audio and Real Media, Shockwave and
Flash, it's dead meat. Or dynamic fonts, which are showing up on more and
more commercial websites, and if your Composer doesn't handle them you're
wasting your time building a Composer for OS/2.

Sorry for the tone. I don't mean to be attacking anybody's work, and I know
you're having to work inside some pretty ridiculous-looking parameters,
being in IBM and all. (No offense intended except to the stutified and
unintellectual corporate culture of IBM.)

No, it's not, because if just ONE of the honchos who makes the larger
decisions reads it and decides that maybe, just maybe, there's a reason to
expand the job you've been given, and does it, then we're all better off,
right?

Netscape/2 crashes, and can even cause the hallowed crash "resistant" OS/2
to crash, or more usually, hang. And building in more functions FIRST
instead of building OUT the bugs that cause it to step on its own tail is
wasting a lot of all our time.

A lot of people prefer NS 2.02 because the final version of that doesn't
cause nearly as much trouble as all the 4.04 versions I've seen. It still
isn't as good as it should have been.

I don't know why it would be "taboo" because I thought it fit this very
well. (And it's nice to correspond with someone whose brain is quick enough
to move sideways and use a metaphor or an analogy to make a point.)

I'm guessing that you mean you are hoping I don't feel that way about your
final product release?

You surely can't think that the current betas are not seriously
troublesome, can you? I still can't print a page that contains a picture
without the second page becoming strangely magnified, but I'm assuming that
all this gets cleaned up before the GA drop, or at least you'll take a
fresh chop at it.

Although there was a troubling comment here referring to problems with the
In-Joy dialer that suggested y'all weren't going to do anything to fix that
one because you had some kind of schedule to keep. (I don't want it right,
I want it right now?)

> on the latter, you

No. No. A thousand times: No.

IT IS THE JOB OF IBM to cultivate the plugin developers, not theirs to
cultivate IBM. And the plugins have become STANDARD on the Internet, so
you're not going to have Standard Internet Capabilities without them.

Always a pleasure. No offense is ever intended, because your presence here
can only help us all.

Good luck,

RTFM. Or in this case the readme files on the CD.

You sure as hell can put 1.8 megs on a floppy with the utilities included
on the CD. In fact, IBM even provides a command file to automate the
process as much as possible. In an installed Warp 4 system, the ability
read and make copies is part of a complete installation. Why, for example,
do you suppose that xdfloppy.flt is loaded at boot up on a Warp 4 system?
Why do you suppose that xdfcopy.exe is in the os2 subdirectory?

There's a batch file to make the install diskettes in the root directory
of the CD. But set aside a weekend when you've got nothing else to do:
Just the base essentials comes out to 40 floppies; the feature installer
and Java engine adds another 56. Networking apps have to be added to
floppy separately from the prodinst.cmd if you need them on floppy. This
is another 16 for tcp/ip and mpts, 8 for Netware, 8-10 for Peer... It
takes a *long* time to make this many floppies, so be sure this is what
you really want to do and that you have enough diskettes on hand.

Do you have another machine with about 150MB of space (temporarily)?
Do you have a network link between the two machines?

If so, install a basic OS/2 with NETBIOS access on the other machine.
Then use the remote install procedure; it builds three diskettes which
you then boot on the notebook and it installs over the network...

Try running "netscape /?". It should give you the parameters.

You are absolutely correct. IBM might be making some frustrating moves
in my eyes right now regarding the OS/2 client and its future, but their
support for their products (including OS/2 client) is *extremely* good,
at least in terms of providing code fixes.

There are times when I get really frustrated at IBM. And then I think
of Microsoft and realize how good we have it (in some ways).

Hi

Those are xdf images so you will need xdfcopy.exe (which is probably
somewhere on CD so you can make floppies with

xdfcopy <image name> a:

and that is it.

Subj: Non Y2K bug in OS/2? :)

From: mike.luther@ziplog.com

I was pleasantly surprised by a Y2K test and OS/2. While de-bugging a
mail application in an old DOS suite which errored out with a 1980 year
date in 2000, I hit on something curious!

Two boxes, one with a 1992 AMI BIOS and one with a 1996 Award BIOS had
previously checked out as unable to roll the year automatically with
separate hardware testing programs run from a DOS disk.. They,
supposedly, would work with 2K by hand setting the date after midnight.

Lo and behold... during a 12-31-1999 and 23:50 -> clock rollover with
OS/2 Warp 4.0 ... surprise!

      1.) Both boxes auto-rolled..

2.) Both boxes retained the 01-01-2000 date at the BIOS level ..

3.) During a power down - restart .. all is still correct...

According to a couple of hardware testing programs run at a pure DOS
level, neither box should have been able to do this..

Are we shortchanging the nice folks at IBM for OS/2 and does it have
some of the intrinsic 'fix-me' in it as of FP8 that some other programs
claim to do at a software level?

Another approach. I used it on my son's laptop -- it can't have a
floppy and a CD ROM at the same time. There're 2 below, similar -- I
don't remember which I used. Both require that you have enough disk
space to hold the installation files and the installed OS/2 system
(can be on different disks -- probably advisable :)).

DESCRIPTION

This document describes the steps necessary to install OS/2 Warp from
the hard drive on laptop systems which cannot use the diskette drive
and CD-ROM drive at the same time.

RESOLUTION

Hard Drive to Hard Drive Installation

1. Start your system with the CD-ROM drive attached and the OS/2 Warp
   CD-ROM in the drive.

2. Make a temporary directory called TEMP; type MD TEMP and
   press Enter.

3. Type

   XCOPY X:\os2image\*.* /S C:\TEMP and press Enter.

   where:

X: is the CD-ROM drive, and
C: is a drive containing enough disk space to place
      the images and OS/2.

4. Restart the system with the diskette drive attached.
Create a DISKCOPY of the OS/2 Warp Diskette 1 by typing
the following at the command prompt:

     DISKCOPY A: A:

5. With the DISKCOPY of Diskette 1 in the drive, type
COPY A:\CONFIG.SYS A:\CONFIG.001, then press Enter.

6. Use a text editor to edit the CONFIG.SYS on the new Diskette 1 and
   make the following changes:

   buffers=32
   iopl=yes
   memman=swap,delayswap
   protshell=sysinst1.exe

   rem set oemprogram=\ibminst\npconfig.exe
   rem set exitwhendone=1

   Save and Exit the file.

7. You can begin the OS/2 installation with the following:

   - OS/2 Warp Installation Diskette
   - OS/2 Warp Diskette 1, modified as in step 6
   - Diskette images in the \TEMP directory on the hard disk

Insert the OS/2 Installation Diskette in drive A: and restart
the system. When prompted for Diskette 1, use the modified copy.

Now, now, there. We must all keep a civil tongue in our head. You get more
flies with honey than vinegar, remember. (If you want flies.) Suffer fools
gladly, at least.

The URL you want is:

And of course you have to be connected to see it. Why Netscape in their
Corporate Wisdom didn't think it best to make this a local file, I'll never
understand, but that's the way it is.

Good luck,

Just my 2 cents worth....

How far did you get in the boot process? Past the OS2LOGO? If not I have
a similar problem. I can boot from floppy but not from harddisk. I HAVE
loaded the new support for large drives, but if ibm1s506.add is loaded
from the hard disk nothing happens after. I am trying to install to a new
8.1GB drive on a Toshiba laptop. I can install and boot Windoze95 and
linux, which does boot fine from the hard disk after installation. I
belive that there is still a problem in ibm1s506 with certain
machine/drive combinations. I have tried all the documented options as
well.

I have put the 8.1GB hard drive in another machine, used the same install
disks, and successfully booted os2 from the hard disk following the phase
1 of the installation. It is only in the toshiba that there is a hang on
boot following phase 1 of the install....

loaded the new support for large drives, but if ibm1s506.add is loaded
from the hard disk nothing happens after.

By generic IDE drivers, do you mean what shows up when you try to do
a selective install? I've tried all those, although I will try
them again. There is no Sony CDU611 listed, but there is a 6111.
As I've said, I've tried all the Sony setups, to no avail, but I'll

might that driver be available?

I have the same problem with my system but I get as far as the
penultimate shutdown screen / message and (fortunately) don't have to
go through the chkdisk routine on reboot. I asked about this here
some time ago and was told the culprit was the Adaptec driver for my
SCSI set up.

I'm assuming the CDU611 is an IDE/ATAPI cd machine. If so, try adding
the following lines to your config.sys file. If any of them are
already there, then don't add them again

BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD /v (THIS LINE MAY ALREADY BE THERE)
BASEDEV=IBMIDECD.FLT
BASEDEV=OS2DASD.DMD

Can this be corrected without backing out the new Communicator?

Thanks in advance.

This is ridiculous. From system to system things are so different. I had not
one tiny little problem with it.

From within VAJ 2.0, Select "Window..." then "Options" and then
"Help". Here you can specify the path and filename to your browsers
executable.

From: Irv Spalten <ispalten@us.ibm.com>

Known problem, and should be fixed in FP 12 and 42, due out soon.

Problem is the IBM1S506 driver significantly increased in size. This is
the APAR= JR12954, BOOTDISK.EXE TRAPS WITH SYS3175 ERROR AFTER FP10.

If you have an old set around, or just copy the installation diskettes,
and copy over ALL the device drivers from your hard disk, and when you
run out of space, delete unneeded drivers (CD's, sound cards', etc) to
make space, you can get it done.

Though of limited use for you, I can report that I installed the GA over
the preview without a single hitch. Didn't do anything in preparation.

From: Kyle Markley <mrbirdie@dagny.dorm.org>

Help!

I upgraded to Netscape 4.61 and now I can't read e-mail or newsgroups
anymore! The message headers display, but the text is absent -- or it's
white on white. I can't read anything!

I can copy/paste into another window to get the text, or trying to Reply
to the message will bring up a new window where it's visible.
Naturally, I'd rather not do that....

Can anybody help me out? Please reply via e-mail -- newsgroups are too
frustrating to read like this, but I'll force myself to get through my
e-mail.

Go to Edit->Preferences, select Fonts, and change the Fixed

would normally be the alternative).

From: "Graham C. Norris" <norrisg@linkline.com>

First, if you've created your own boot logo (OS2LOGO), revert to the
default. Next, while the 2nd diskette is being built, watch it from a
command line using DIR: delete files you don't need immediately after
they've been copied. If you don't use an MCA machine, delete all IBM2*
files. Other files vary from system to system, but AIC7870.ADD is a
prime contender as it has grown huge and many people find it doesn't
work even if they need it. Make a note of every file you delete. Some
files you will have to delete twice: they are copied once off the CD and
again from the boot drive. Once the diskettes are all built, put any
files back you need to (e.g. the original version of AIC7870.ADD off the
CD) and edit the CONFIG.SYS on the same floppy so it doesn't try to load
anything you deleted. You can now restore any custom boot logo.

Does anyone know of a work around or upgrade to WinOS2 that will allow
me to use my entire 9.1GB HardDrive as one partition? I know that
WinOS2 (Win 3.X) is limited by the old DOS 2GB drive limit, but maybe
some one has knowledge of a recompiled drive file that uses thunking, or
some other modification to allow for the latest large drives (6GB, 8GB,
10GB, etc.)

to answer my own posting there is an error in the install process. If you
select
saving the the previous version the install goes through. If not not.

Same here on both counts, FWIW.

Since then, however, I've uninstalled the results and re-installed the
GA afresh. Why? 'Cos, among other small things, both the title bar
and the about: Communicator page persisted in reporting that I still
had the Beta2 version aboard. Something to do with the file
..\lang\en_US\RESDLL.DLL (which seems to be the one that carries or
calls the version messages) not being overwritten during the update
process, I suspect. Probably not critical, but at least the
installation I actually have now reports itself as consistent with the
one I thought I had!

(The uninstall/reinstall process, incidentally, preserved personal
settings, customizations and other things (eg bookmarks and history)
undisturbed. AFAICT so far, the only thing "lost" was the contents of
the cache.)

From: John Griffin <thrillmstr@mindspring.com>

yeah i noticed the same thing, but the error seems to happen sporadicaly, and
not to often now. (had the first one since my first post, last night) but i am
now running 404, netscape 4.61 is out of beta but i will probably wait for a
bit before i download it. i dont ask much out of an os except that it run
stable and secure. so far os2 is it. linux has a way to go before i will
really
get in to it. and the pmmerge (or sys3175) errors are negligable. i just hope
to tune in here for the post that cures it (or presents a work around) one
day.
i'm sure its in the os not in netscape. i ve tried with FP's and with out, ive
tried it b4 installing any extra programs (ie candybarz, truetype dll for os2,
etc). And did notice an increase in errors when running NPSWPS and candybarz
with netscape. i'm not saying they caused it but i think they brought out the
bug a little more (on my box anyway). but like i said its happened b4 any
fixpack and extra programs are installed and doesnt increase or decrease in
frequency after fp was added. the error just occurs every now and again. even
when not running netscape. all in all i can live with this (so far my only
problem) rare instance compared to 98's truck load.

The 2GB limit you are probably talking about is a FAT(16) partition
limit. You can try going to HPFS and defining the first 8GB as a single
partition (I'm assuming you are going to need to boot from this
partition also... if your bootable OS2 is elsewhere you can define the
whole disk as one partition, although I would never do that
personally... too many eggs in one basket when the ultimate disaster
occurs).

Once you have done that, you can move on to the next potential problem.
Some windows programs check for free space and are totally
(mathematically) unprepared to deal with a number over 2GB (and usually
thinks the number is a negative or other incorrect positive value of
free space.

Get by that, and you should be home-free.

Subj: Re: Cannot create utility diskettes

From: Juan I. Cahis <jiclbch@ibm.net>

Dear Friends:

If your problem is generated by the lack of space in the second
diskette (due to the fact that many drivers have grown in size), prior
to generate the emergency diskettes, replace the file "KEYBOARD.DCP"
(300k in size), by the one that comes in one of the original OS/2
installation diskettes (about 15k in size). So you will save about
270k in the second emergency diskette!!!! After generating the
emergency diskettes, restore the original file.

The small "KEYBOARD.DCP" file allows you to use your keyboard as an US
American keyboard only, but this will be OK in many emergency
situations.

Jeff,

I've been looking all over the web for a solution to my problem and then
I
found your bug fix list for 4.61!

I am running os/2 warp and communicator 4.6 and have been having cache
and
reload problems like you discovered in 4.61.
Only when I hit reload do I get my text looking as it should even after
I
clear the cache. Its annoying for the end user to hit
reload on each page. We're running a website off our internal server
and
have been viewing a site made in dreamweaver on
an os/2 machine and viewing the content through communicator 4.6.

Have you found a fix for this that I could apply to 4.6? This is what
our
client has and
I don't see them upgrading unless 4.61 is free or relatively inexpensive
for
os/2 warp. That's even if there's a fix for this problem in either
versions.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can give.

I'm having problems trying to update to the newer versions of the feature
installer.
Both the previous version, and now the latest (1.2.5) version crashes my
system
when I try to install. After I close everything and the message comes up
about
refreshing the desktop, the WPS shuts down and redraws and gives me an error
message. My system setup icons have red balls which say FS and I must reboot.
Does anyone else have this happen?

I have an HP682C printer and have no problems. I don't know why you think
you can't install the Windows 3.x drivers in Win-OS/2. I did just that. I
installed theWin 3.x printer dirvers to LPT1 in Win-OS/2. Then I went to
Win-OS/2 main --> control panel --> printers --> connect. Then connected my
printer to LPT1.OS2. Whenever I fire up Win-OS/2 I get an annoying popup
message saying that the driver is not installed properly but everything works
fine. I know there is a way to make that message stop coming up but I've
forgotten what it is.

Good luck
Jim

You said FP_40. That implies Warp 3. I thought Communicator 4.61 was
only supported on Warp 4.

Perhaps Netscape 2.02 can't handle a number greater than 2G (2 raised to the
31 st power - 1) which is the largest number that can be held in a 32-bit
signed integer. Try allocating some dummy files to get the space available
less than 2G. Later you can delete these files when your partition fills up
more.

Ah well, thanks. There are typos in my german Comm 4.61's menus.

Well, choosing this leads me to a site where I can select the product
language and country which in any case leads me to a page that says that
there's no special page for Communicator support available.

I had the same problem - glad I came across this message! Out of curiosity,
why does this problem occur? btw, other than this problem, the new

Subj: Can't print from Communicator 4.61 to HP682C

From: Jim Parker <jdparker@erols.com>

I've tried printing web pages from Communicator 4.61 to my HP682C and
all I get is garbage. When viewing the print jobs using PICVIEW the jobs
look OK but PICVIEW pops up a message saying that "The application
detects some erroneous data in the metafile."

I upgraded to the latest OMNI driver (30.698) but that didn' t help.
Printing used to work under Communicator 4.04.

Anybody else seen this problem? Any solution?

Thanks
Jim

        <<<snip>>>

Just went to http://www.share.org. No problem.
Three potential bear traps on the page:
- a Java (I'm assuming) applet that scrolls by some
comments, each of which is a link to something. I
positioned my mouse cursor over the scrolling area &
watched the URL area in the bottom border of the
window change with each entry as it passed under the
stationary mouse cursor.
- a Java (I'm assuming) applet that is counting down
to the totally bogus date of this coming New Year.
- an animated graphic of a running, jaw-snapping
velociraptor. I think it's a velociraptor. Some
fierce looking dinosaur, anyway.

Opened it in a second browser window too.

Now as for the SYS3175, I've seen it in 4.61GA too.
But it's the exact same stinking thing I have been
reporting here since the February 12, 1999 release of
4.04GA. Multiple browser windows stall the download
until you pull focus away from all browser windows.
Many advertisements do something bad, I can't tell if
it's the animations or applets (Java or Javascript)
behind them, or what. CPU goes to 100%, page
download stalls, & switching focus away from all
browser windows restarts the data transfer. Slow
rendering of tables whose cells are both numerous &
of colored backgrounds. Something failing in one
browser instantiation that causes the SYS3175 closes
them all. I've been routinely running with graphics,
Java, & Javascript disabled, although I turned them
all on to view the SHARE site.

In short, my effort to report this OLD problem in
4.04 while 4.61 was still in beta fell on TOTALLY
deaf ears. The problem ended up in 4.61GA, as I
feared. Otherwise, it seems to work pretty much the
way 4.04 did. I don't notice much in the way of
change. But then, I don't use it for E-mail or NNTP,
strictly for web browsing. And that includes this
post, because I do Usenet at Deja News, which is
browser-based. I wish there were a browser-only
packaging option. Another request that finds deaf
ears. Reminds me of a certain monopoly's claim their
"browser" is "integrated" into their "operating
system."

Because we made the default font Courier New, but have
since found out that Courier New might not have been
installed. Fixing it will be a matter of defaulting to Courier
if Courier New can't be found; however, until that fix is
available, the font-changing work-around will have to do.

That sounds suspiciously like you have the old NS46DRAG
from the beta, not the correct one from the GA release.
What's the size and date on that DLL? It should be 9/16
and 4220, if I remember correctly. If it's the old one,
then the Workplace Shell has a hold of it, and you'll only
be able to delete it by booting to a command prompt;
we've since changed how that DLL loads so that won't
happen anymore. You can replace that DLL with the
correct one from the GA, or re-install.

 > some one has knowledge of a recompiled drive file that uses thunking,
 > or some other modification to allow for the latest large drives (6GB,
 > 8GB, 10GB, etc.)

Here's a brief excerpt from 2GBFIX.TXT that summarizes how it works:

= - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - =

                                             but usually the affected
program thinks that the volume or partition has insufficient disk space
because the result of the calculation is either zero or negative.

2GBFIX works around this by patching the appropriate DOS calls so that
they never return more than 2GB of total or free space,

= - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - = - =

Incidentally, if that big drive is (will be) your boot drive, there
are also considerations regarding the location of your boot files. As I
understand it, all files used or accessed in booting have to be located
within the first 1023 cylinders of the drive. What that translates to in
terms of capacity may be dependent on your particular drive geometry, but
if you experience any problems booting from that drive this would be one
thing to investigate.

Subj: Comm 4.61 and Real Audio !

From: la2gca@deleteme.c2i.net (Svein Sandersen)

I am very happy with the GA of Comm 4.61. Almost everything I've tried
is working.
BUT -- still the one, same problem remains:
When using Real Audio and going from one place to a new one,
Communicator doesn't check that a win-os2 session is started, running
RA. When going to a new place, we first have to close RA, and then go
to where we want. EVERY time I try this Comm will open another
session, not using the one already opened. Netscape 2.02 does this
very well.

Try this by going to www.radiotower.com.
Then choose some stations you want to listen to.
It is very annoying to have to close RA, just to be able to go to
another place.
Clicking on pre-defined stations on RealPlayer works ok, since this
doesn't involve Communicator.

This is the main reason I have to keep Netscape 2.02 on my machine.

Will there be a fix for this one Michael?
The problem has been reported several times (have e-mailed you
earlier), maybe not through the formal channels...

I think it is important to fix this, because a lot of places on the
internet sites requires RealPlayer or that other MediaPlayer.

Hoping for a fix sometime.

Thanks for a great job done with 4.61
It seems to be rock solid now.

COMM 461 GA continues to fail downloading large files. It handles
small files fine but usually terminates without meesages sometime after

stack 5.50, TCPIP applications 4.21. This is why I keep 2.02 around.
Anyone have clues to the possible cause? Have there been fixes tp tcpip

Jeff,
Thanks for the reply. Even though my NS46DRAG.DLL had the
correct size and date, I rebooted to a command prompt and
renamed it and then reinstalled/update) NS461. Same result.

If I try to rename NS46DRAG.DLL from the WPS, I still get a
message that it's locked by another program so something has
a hold on it; although it doesn't show up in the output
of PSTAT /L.

I also did a full disk scan on ns46* and the only other nsdrag*
thing that turned up was a Ns46drag template.
frank.

Can't you query for available fonts? Why do you assume any font exists?
Install allows deselection from the default installation list. IIRC, no
serif fonts are installed on my system. I've hated courier ever since I
saw my first Laserjet printout in 1985.

Yes, since a few versions. Henk Kelder's CheckIni does this as well
when refreshing the desktop at the end. Might be hardware dependent?

No problem here. WARP 4, FP11, DDFP1, WR08620,
IP08412, Communicator 4.61GA, Java 1.1.8+1999/9/18
fixes, FI 1.2.5, Matrox old Millennium PCI 4Meg with
2.23.082 driver, modem connection to the Internet. I
did have to pull focus off the browser window to make
the page load (Jeff, are you listening?) but once I
did that, it loaded fine. A reload similarly loaded
fine once I gave focus to something other than the
browser. I didn't follow any of the links because
not only is that site in a language I don't
understand, I don't even recognize it. What country
is ee? Estonia?

As for the SYS3175, I am surprised I didn't see it
myself on this page because I have seen that trap
pretty often. But it usually happens when I have
multiple browser windows open & certain
advertisements are . . . Never mind. I've posted
that description at least 4 times. No sense wasting
the bandwidth yet again.

From: Marc Chapuis <mchapuis@rkgi.com>

As far as I understand it, the CLOCK driver checks if the century byte is
plausible. If not, it will be corrected. This is independent from the BIOS
keeping the byte or resetting it after the next start.

4.61 is free. There is no 4.6 version for OS/2, so I don't understand

That still sounds like you have some remnants of the drag code
from the beta. Here's what I suggest:

(1) Delete the NS46Drag object template

You can do this by checking off the "Template" option on the
Icon page of the Properties for that object, then drag the object
into a dummy folder, then drag the folder to the shredder.

(2) Delete the NS46DRAG object itself (Nowhere folder)

You can do this by running a CMD file with the following:

/* */
call RxFuncAdd 'SysLoadFuncs', 'RexxUtil', 'SysLoadFuncs'
call SysLoadFuncs

if SysDestroyObject("<WP_NS46DRAG>") then
  say 'NS46DRAG object deleted.'
else
say 'NS46DRAG object could not be deleted.'

exit

(3) Reboot

Apologies, I mean that we are running 4.04 with os/2 warp. We're having
similar refresh cache problems I saw listed as a 4.61 bug. Has this problem
been fixed in 4.61. I see "fixed?" on the list. If so is there an appoach
that was taken on 4.61 to fix this that could be applied to 4.04 while still
using 4.04.

Thanks Again

Well I got rid of the NS46DRAG template okay. But the
Rexx program won't delete the NS46DRAG object. I'll repeat
it here just to confirm what I ran:
[C:\]type deldrag.cmd
  /* */
  call RxFuncAdd 'SysLoadFuncs', 'RexxUtil', 'SysLoadFuncs'
  call SysLoadFuncs

  if SysDestroyObject("<WP_NS46DRAG>") then
    say 'NS46DRAG object deleted.'
  else
say 'NS46DRAG object could not be deleted.'

  exit
--
I've also found that if I uninstall NS461, reboot, reinstall,
_don't_ reboot; _then_ drag n drop works okay until the
following reboot when something apparently latches on
to NS46DRAG.DLL. (It shows up in pstat/a immediately
following a reboot but only in the list of dll's, not as
a linked library for a running process.)
--
I really appreciate the time Jeff has already spent on this.
Could someone else suggest a way I might figure out what
is loading NS46DRAG.DLL before Netscape gets to it?

In general the new Netscape works very very well. Big
improvement.

Frank.

Woohoo! Good post. It solved a related problem here.

On these sites, for example...

www.ebay.com
www.bmtmicro.com
www.indelibleblue.com

..the search boxes don't work with NS 4.61GA.

There's no box in which to write what to search for. I mean,
the box is one dimensional, which is fascinating, but it can't
be written into, not in my world. The Search button works OK,
but then the site searches on nothing.

This worked OK with 4.61b2.

I went to Preferences-->Fonts and changed the Variable Width
Printer Fonts to 8, and nothing.

Went back and made the Courier New into Courier, and Bingo!
the Search boxes are back in place.

It's Warp v4 FP11 with Peer, wr08620, Java 1.18. NS 4.61GA
installed perfectly, updating 4.61b2, and is running well.
PnP installed perfectly too. The 4.61b2 downloaded both great
files flawlessely. There are no entries in popuplog.os2
related to NS.

It might be gone then. Look in C:\nowhere and see if you
see a 0-byte file with NS46Drag in the title. If not, then
the object is gone.

The Workplace Shell is certainly the one "latching onto"
the NS46DRAG DLL at boot-up. If you've removed the
template and the object, then the only other possibility
is that the NS46Drag class is somehow still registered in
the Shell. You'd need some utility to view the registered
classes to be able to get rid of it, though....

It's a good thing we aren't creating classes and objects
in the Shell anymore.... whew!

I have backleveled my TCP/IP from 4.2 to 4.0 and Comm 4.61 has never
dropped a download since. Several other apps work better too (Inetrnet
Gate and Sockd).

Hi Jeffrey.

have tried several versions of drivers for my display driver
(S3Trio3D, chipset 365). The drivers from Warp DDPak, S3 website and
from my Ready-to-Configure CD (I have IBM PC 300GL) - all are version
4.00.26, or the latest provided from the IBM support website (4.10.05
and 4.10.08) provide the same result on that webpage www.online.ee.
However, if I remember correctly, the beta1&beta2 did not crash.
Anyway, thank you responding.

From: Terence Cheng <terence@nikoyo.com>

I'd like to install Warp 4.0 to my notebook throgh a AHA1460 PCMCIA Scsi
card and attach with an external CD-ROM. I'd download the install disk
update from:
http://service.software.ibm.com/os2ddpak/html/os_2inst/ibmcorpo/index.htm

I tried the PCMCIA Scsi with Intel PCMCIA disk.
However, when boot from the disk, it show
invalid switch...
Could anyone told me what is the problem?
The PCMCIA controller is Ricoh RL5C475 CardBus

Jeff,

I researched the Rexx commands a bit to get the following output.

  Class 161 is StarWriterHtmlFile SOAGENT
  Class 162 is StarWriterFile SOAGENT
  Class 163 is StarOfficeAgent SOAGENT
  Class 164 is Ns46drag D:\NETSCAPE\PROGRAM\NS46DRAG.DLL
  Class 165 is MMInetMgr INETMGR

I then ran a Rexx program to deregister Ns46drag.
Voila! I can now Drag-n-Drop. Guess I had the tools, but not
the expertise to follow up without your help. Thanks a bunch.
Wonder where that came from? I did run some beta tests for
your team.

Again great program. I see elsewhere that the stability of
the OS/2 port is superior to other platforms.

frank.

Subj: NS4.61 semi-bug on install

From: "Graham C. Norris" <norrisg@linkline.com>

I guess this is halfway between a bug and an unwanted "feature". When
you install NS4.61 (which is working fine, thank you, although I still
miss a very few things from 2.02) without letting it update or overlay
an existing 4.04 installation it hijacks the existing users.

It wouldn't be so bad if it copied them, or asked so you know what's
going on, instead it just uses them where they are, in the 4.04
directory. When you delete the 4.04 directory ... well you know what
happens, no users left and a pain in the backside to fix! I know this is
because NSCP.INI only has one Users application, however I think each NS
install should have its own Users key instead, and have the install for
a new version *copy* the user information.

Graham.

From: Michael DeBusk <debu4335@dpnet.net>

When I installed WordPerfect 7 Suite for Windows 3.1 on my Warp 4
Ficpack 10 system, none of the apps would run. Several of them gave me
the error message, "This program needs a newer version of WIn-OS/2."

I recently tried to install Internet Explorer for Windows 3.1 and got
the same error.

What do I need to correct?

Really? And what scientific foundation do you build
that sweeping statement on? I can speak for this
member of the OS/2 community. I have no Symantec
products currently, so I have no opinion one way or
the other about their software. I didn't like the
fact that their web site was singularly unhelpful for
me, but several prods of their webmaster did result
in a polite response assuring me that I could get a
single-user AV product from them if I called a
certain 800 number. See my other post on this thread
for the details.

So don't go making such statements when you haven't
done the research.

> If you need an AV, try it and judge for yourself.

An eminently sensible piece of advice nonetheless.

Fair enough. I know how to read mainframe dumps, not
PC traps. All these SYS3175s have this in common:
DS=0053
ES=0053
FS=150b
If that doesn't mean anything, OK.

Meanwhile, I have a better idea. Get yourself a
Pentium 133 with plenty of DASD, RAM, video power,
with a dial-up modem connection to the Internet,
install WARP 4 with all the current maintenance and
the Communicator 4.61GA, and start surfing to web
pages simultaneously in multiple browser
instantiations. Make sure you have image loading,
Java, & Javascript turned on. Make sure you get at
least 5 browsers going, maybe 8 or 9. Do it at Deja
News. Make all the windows be trying to download
different Usenet articles at the same time. Really
push it. Lots of right click on links & Open in new
window. Do it for a couple of hours. Report your
results here.

A few moments ago, I read a post from Mike Kaply on
the subject of a Real Audio issue. He said, in
effect, gee we seem to have missed that one. We'll
look into it.

THAT'S ALL I WANT, JEFF.

That's all I've ever wanted, since I started
reporting this problem with the previous release as
early as a couple of days after it hit the streets
this past February. Just make a good faith effort to
duplicate it. Then I'll shut up because I'll feel
good you're working on it. If I don't see the
correction for 3 months, OK. You've acknowledged it
& you're working on it. That's all I ask.

I had the same problem with NS 4.04: Print jobs never arrived at spooler.
Once I had installed a new driver the problem was solved. The version I have
is 30.694 .
Get the newest laserjet.exe from the device driver pack. The version there
might be updated again.

Good luck

Do you have a real version of Win 3.1 on your disk? If so, is the
path statement in the autoexec.bat file pointing to WinOS/2 and not
real Win 3.1

Felix! What's this with the localhost? I run am currently developing a program

Subj: NS 4.61 Composer Irritants

From: Jim Stuyck <jstuyck@home.com>

Here are a few "undesired" characteristics of the newest Composer
component:

1) For a "table within a table", composer adds an "&nbsp;" in front
of the "</td>" which adds a blank line. I remove that "&nbsp" and
the tables display the way I want 'em to display. Reinvoke
    Composer, that "&nbsp" gets reinserted.
2) Within a table, for alignment purposes, I place one or more
"<br>&nbsp;" lines. Table displays the way I like it. Invoke
Composer and those lines get removed, sometimes the last of
    them being replaced with "<p>&nbsp;".
3) Composer replaced all HTML tags that were capitalized (under
     Composer 4.04 with lowercase tags.

I'd prefer that Composer leave existing HTML alone. I will probably
start searching for another program, one to replace Composer.

There are other bugs, like fairly frequent SYS3175's that cause ".DMP"
after ".DMP" in \OS2\SYSTEM\RAS. Can't stop that without a C-A-D.
Haven't figured out why -- initial suspicion was starting 4.61 when another
copy of 4.61 hadn't quite completed shutting down -- but I'm not sure of

hey,
i'm having problems installing os2 warp v3 on a >8 GB HD.
i'm getting errormessages saying that HD partitions are too small.
i understand on the ongoing discussions that there is a bug making it
important to install os2
on the first 1024 cylinders and that the errormessages are false.
how do i solve this?
also is it possible to use win95/98 with os/2?

It's possible to have them both installed on the same hard drive, each in

From: wswain@erinet.com

Hi;

When I click on an icon of any of my DOS programs I get a splash scrren
that asks if the path is correct. If I try to start a DOS program form
the command line I get a "out of memory" remark.

I run Warp 4, Fix Pack 11. Warp is on its own HPFS partition and the DOS
programs are on their own FAT partition.

Anyone have any hints they can give me?

I have run chkdsk /F:3 several times

Regards,

Have you rebooted since the problem started? I know we don't like to
reboot OS/2, however sometimes it helps! Have you installed anything
recently, or edited CONFIG.SYS?

sorry guys, but localhost is supposed to take forever (30 seconds) to timeout.

We can't figure out why it worked in 4.04 but it shouldn't have. Note
127.0.0.1 did
NOT work on 4.04, only localhost.

When you type localhost, you are attempting to connect to a web server on your
machine. Because there is no web server running, netscape takes 35 seconds to
time
out. This is exactly the result you should see. It is the same situation if
you
connected to a machine on the network that did not have a web server running.
This
happens on all Netscape platforms.

If people are looking for a way to have localhost time out immediately,
someone
should write a dummy web server that accepts connections and then rejects
them.
Then anyone who wants an immediate timeout on localhost would run this server.

The logo ("splash") screen says 4.6, but the version in About: says 4.61;
this is how it was throughout the betas, and how it is on the Windows
version of 4.61 as well. At one point, we hadn't yet moved up to the
version 4.61 code, and still had 4.6 in the About: screen; a screen-shot
of that version made it to the Internet.... but that was before the first
beta.

I don't agree at all. A typical situation is an install over 4.04 which
reuses user information.

We specifically designed 4.61 so that 4.04 and 4.61 could share user
information, and be installed at the same time.

If we made copies, adding a bookmark to 4.04 wouldn't add it in 4.61.

The composer things are definitely same as Windows.

That's why I write my HTML by hand.

The Nethelp slowness is again same as Windows. It's just a really slow help

Why do you have your system set to take a dump every time it traps? Sounds
pretty
counterproductive to me.

Guess I should've done a little more research myself. Here
is the complete REXX file needed:

/* */
call RxFuncAdd 'SysLoadFuncs', 'RexxUtil', 'SysLoadFuncs'
call SysLoadFuncs

if SysDestroyObject("<WP_NS46DRAG>") then
  say 'NS46DRAG object deleted.'

if SysDeRegisterObjectClass("Ns46drag") then
  say 'NS46DRAG class deregistered.'

That's exactly where it came from. The beta should have
cleaned that up for you, but didn't. Perhaps the last time

No, that doesn't mean anything. Pretty much every trap
with every 32-bit application on OS/2 will have those
values in those registers. The important one is the EIP,
which is the Instruction Pointer. If you aren't executing
the same instruction, you don't have the same trap.

Because that was a simple issue that could be
succinctly described and easily recreated by anyone,
and which we could pass off to the service team to
be fixed in a fixpack. Neither Mike nor I are
supposed to be sitting here recreating problems
reported on Usenet; if it's something simple, we'll
give it a look-see to give service a hand in a quick
resolution, but that's it.

I used to be of the same opinion (well, we called it "GML") but, nowadays,
I lean toward the tools that make life simple. That's why I'd like to use
your tools, but would prefer to have them leave things alone when the

Leftover from the days when I tested a lot of code, when developers needed
dumps, and when they could count on me to provide them. Seems those days
are gone, and as of now, so is the dumping.

FWIW, I found installation of 4.61 over 4.04 did things "right" by me. There
may have been a few ".PKG" files left behind, but that's all I recall.

That is, with one exception. There was no "news-flavor" object created
in the Netscape folder. I made one, myself, by guessing that the parameter
string "news -l en_US" would work. I also found the news-related icon and
applied that to the program object. This gives me something approaching
what I'd really like. As it is, I have to click on the "+" next to "news"
then
wait till the first time I double-click on a newsgroup before I get to the
three-part window that lets me single-click on a newsgroup or an article's
header. This means, to shut down, I have TWO windows to close.

I'm not sure I *like* that graphic that appears initially where the
articles show up, and don't see a way to avoid it.

I have, actually, rebooted several times in the past few days, for the
first time in a long time.

Another thing, I did change the viewing size of my screen. That is, I
have an HP monitor that allows, using buttons on the front, one to
increase/decrease the size of the picture presented. It was after this
that I had problems.

In addition, I find that I cannot shut OS2 down in the normal manner!! I
mouse click on the shut-down icon, splash screen appears to confirm shut
down desired, press "okay" and everything grinds to a halt.

I think I will try the boot-blob and restart using an archived set.

But if you can think of anything else, please speak out. I am not a real
computer expert, about low intermediate and any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Regards,

Whit

Subj: Unable to get to DOS - solved

From: wswain@erinet.com

Hi all;

To all who wrote to help, thanks. I solved the basic problem by going
back to an archived set from last month. All seems to work well now.

Whit

I'm a mere observer. Above I quoted from Steve Wendt's bug tracker page,
where I discovered an apparent reason for ill behavior observed. My
hosts file has a large number of popup ad domains in it. When I use 4.61
to visit pages that use them, "done" takes nearly forever to show up. No
such problem with 2.02.

I don't believe that you need to install in the root directory - just make
sure that all directories in the path follow the 8.3 naming convention. Win
3.1 programs aren't savy to long filenames. In your example above <Netthings>
would seem to be the culprit.

Thanks for the tips Mike, but I didn't quite make this work. I removed
the realplayer name/path in comm, applications and started realplayer
first. When clicking on an ra url, a window pops up with the url, but
it doesn't seem to know what to do with it from there.
Something to do with the right assosiations I guess.
I hope more people are testing this, and report back to you their
experiences.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to a fix in the next release :)
