Subj: Malibu 64 MIDI Traps

From: Dave Black <daveblack@erols.com>

I have the Malibu 64 sound card installed, and it works fine until i try
to close a MIDI file, which results in a trap (i forget which one).
However, it plays WAV and other wave files without problems. I'm using
Warp 4 with FP 8, and the latest drivers (I am pretty sure).

Thanks in Advance,

Dave Black

John,

I've been away from the newsgroups for a while, but the old fix for problems
with SoundBlaster cards (since the AWE64 anyway) was NOT to buy anything that
uses their chips.

Subj: Re: SB live and OS/2

From: "zeppelin@gte.net" <zeppelin@gte.net>

No, No... This wasn't a "pipe dream" or a propaganda ploy that I fancied to
see "if it flys"

I am a Software Choice member, and about a year or so ago I filled out an
"on line" questionaire at the IBM site.Generally a "wish list" type thing
with absolutely no encouragement whatsoever that any suggestions would ever
result in a finished product .So did,evidently, many others. A couple months
later I got an unexpected e-mail from an unfamiliar source that "appeared"
as though it might have originated internally from IBM, that tabulated the
"results" in a "most frequently requested" statistical distribution table.
What I recall is that "SB Live" drivers for OS/2 were "overwhelmingly
desired" and in the words of the author: "Work has already begun"

What made it seem so genuine at the time was that another item that I really
wanted DVD-RAM drivers for OS/2, didn't even have a category listed, And I
guess that The combination of IBM, Personal disappointment, and a feeling of
abandonment, made the experiance seem very genuine.

I figgured that the completion and release of SBLive drivers for OS/2 would
be such an "event" that I couldn't possibly miss it,, so I deleted the
general announcement, and started waiting.

Recently, I just remembered that I had forgotten all about this, so I posted
this inquiry.

Does ANYONE else remember this survey? Did anyone else get a similar
"unofficial" update and tabulation? Anybody know if this project ever
actually materialized, and if so, when/why did it fail?

I guess the only other possibility is that I was hoaxed. Too bad too, I was
really looking forward to the "unloading" of my CPU that this would bring.

Subj: MIDI Station Sequencer 2.0 Beta 6 Is Now Available!!!

From: cdhodge@ibm.net

This is to inform you that MIDI Station Sequencer (MSS) Beta
6 is now available from my website for download. Some of
the new features available are:

1 - Completed Piano Roll module
2 - Fixed problems with audio recording
3 - Fixed layout in Audio Track window - waves now display
proper lengths
4 - Improved playback performance (still a few things left
to do here)
5 - Minor bug fixes and enhancements

The product is pretty much feature complete for this
version. I strongly encourage you to try this version out
as soon as possible and give me some feedback on it. Look
for the GA version very soon. Also if you're interested in
purchasing the sequencer I would recommend that you do so
now because there may be a price increase when the product
goes gold.

IMPORTANT!! IMPORTANT!! IMPORTANT!! IMPORTANT!! IMPORTANT!!
IMPORTANT!!

There is something that you can do to drastically improve
your playback performance. Change the timer sensitivity to
1ms. Originally the default was 5ms but this has turned out
not to be optimal for playback. Look in the settings
notebook on the "Advanced" tab and you'll see the option to
change the timer sensitivity. You'll find that the
performance improves considerably.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Thanks Rich,

I sincerely appreciate the "assist". Now that the "AWE 32" card is no longer
marketed, there really is no 'good' card
to even use VoiceType with. How IBM justifys pulling VoiceType from the now
"enterprise only" OS/2 (funny, but it was marketed as the BEST MultiMedia OS
on
the planet when I purchased v4) yet continues to improve "simply speaking"
for
NT (mkicrosofts "enterprise" OS so they say) is a mystery to me. But then, I
still like P2P from the warp v3 bonuspak. (I'm just "wierd", I guess) BTW
since
you were OS/2 MM "inhouse" do you know of anyway to get the "video" feature
of
P2P functioning without the necessity of that old Intel capture device? I
think
my new Hauppauge PCI card must work better

Thanks!!

You can still pick them up, though. I just bought a pair of them (new,

can also find 'em on eBay and other bidding sites.

Might be hard to find in large numbers, though.

Check mmpm2.ini in the mmos2 directory. The following lines should point to
the Aureal card.

Waveaudio=AURVORTEXWAVE01
Sequencer=AURVORTEXWT01,AURVORTEXMPU40101
Ampmix=AURVORTEXAMPMIX01,AURWTAMPMIX01,AURMPUAMPMIX01

When I removed my SB card I had to set the lines to:
Waveaudio=
Sequencer=
Ampmix=
and then manually delete the sub-hadings that contained info about the SB
card. Then I installed the Aureal card. Don't know about crystal semi but
the mminstal is broken when it comes to removing SB cards and everything is
manual. If you need more help, contact me directly and I will e-mail you the
files.

Don't know if this is relevant but Aureal just announced the release of
their own PCI sound card, to be sold by I/O Magic, that contains a
"souped up Vortex 1 chipset." The Aureal OS/2 drivers are for the
Vortex 1 chipset and I am not sure if they will work with the "souped
up" Vortex 1 chipset. The card with the 8820 Vortex 1 chipset is the
"Magic Wave A3D Audio Accelerator PCI" by I/O Magic with SKU# 195304. I
would be interested in knowing if the Aureal OS/2 drivers work with the
"souped up" Vortex 1 chipset. Has anyone tried it?

Hy,
I affed some new harddisks to my computer. Now I can't load any video
films from CD.
Each time I get a error code 5019 reporting, that OS/2 can't find the
data.
Does anybody know a solution? Am I to reinstall ?
I did of course change the CD-letter assigned to my CD-ROM in
STPM.EXE.

I'd forgotten that I had manually edited the mmos2.ini file to get some
parts of the CS drivers working. The deinstall didn't remove all the
added lines so these screwed up the new card.

Removed the lines by hand and now everything works fine.

Thanks for all the helpful hints.

Phillip...

I meant to get back with you sooner, but lost track of this thread.
Wanted you to know that I found & installed the driver you mention and
now have excellent os/2 sound. Many thanks!

One follow-up question... the readme says I can go back to the sel
install folder & teh AD driver will now be listed. I should be able to
click on properties there & set the 3D sound. Actually mine still
shows "none" for audio support, & the AD driver is not listed as an
option. Any advice?

Excuse me for jumping into this thread, but the header was close enough
to what I had in mind . . . .

Following a lead here about 6 weeks ago, I back-ordered a TB Malibu 64
Surround ISA card from a major online store. It was supposedly a 30 day
wait for more stock. At the time, I thought the chances no better than
50/50 that this item would ever materialize, and sure enough (like so
many other such cards) it is discontinued and no longer available.

Apart from Ebay, does anyone know of an outlet that may still have any
left-over stock ?

TIA.

Start with www.pricewatch.com, which searches other sell sites. They show a
supplier at:

	http://direct.mwave.com/mwave/Index.hmx?UID=PW-4295575-23199

Although a search of the sell site itself doesn't show any "Malibu"
reference.

Good luck,

If you really want one that bad, ask TBS. I've seen them selling old
inventory long after they've dropped it (Rio/Maui come to mind, even
the original Multisound).

Well I spoke to my friends AT IBM today. They told me that no audio
device driver developemnt going on for OS/2, either in-house or
externally contracted. They did say however, that earlier in the year
a progremming shop in China was contracted to write 2 audio drivers.
One for some Yamaha chip and one for some Ensoniq chip. But that both
projects were complete and the drivers were already on the DDpak.

I have realaudio configured on my machine. As
soon as the player starts to receive the file, I
flashes a window that tells me that the file
is not a realaudio file. The transmission halts
from there. I think tcpip is ok because the
player does start to get the file.

Any thoughts of what might be going on.

The file is probably a G2 file and won't play with RealAudio 5 for Win 3.x

There's another possibility that I've found which confuses 16 bit realaudio.
If the file name does not conform to 8.3 specifications, realaudio won't
see it (a DOS limitation). So try saving the file locally with an 8.3 name
and try again.

Subj: Fixpack11 and ESS1879 Sound Chip

From: marabldl@aplcore.jhuapl.edu  (David L. Marable)

Let's try again!

	I have a Micron TransPort XKE notebook with ESS1879. I recently upgraded
to Fixpack 11 from Fixpack 9 and upon reboot a Trap D occurred due to the
ESS1879 driver. When I comment it out, no Trap D occurs. Any ideas how to
get
the sound back with Fixpack 11? I know I could always back out to Fixpack 9.

	I heard about similar problems with ESS1868 and saw some additional
drivers at an indeliblue site. There was no additional driver for the ESS1879
and
I was unsure if I could use the 1868 or 1869 drivers. Any other ideas?

	I am using the latest drivers posted on the ESS site.

HI I would like some info on getting this sound card
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Value 16 Model # CT-2770
 to work with OS/2 Warp 4. I've tried installing it via
selective install as a Sound Blaster 16 and also as a
Sound Blaster 16 PNP. I did not get sound either time I
tried. A copy of the config sys line is as follows

DEVICE=E:\MMOS2\SB16D2.SYS /C:1 /D:1 /H:1 /I:5 /A:220 /M:330 /N:SBAUD1$
/Q /P
DEVICE=E:\MMOS2\AUDIOVDD.SYS SBAUD1$

Could someone also point me to where I can find the descriptions of the
switchwes for the driver?

Thanks in advance

Not true. I've used RealAudio 5.0 on remote files whose names are
longer than 8.3. The 8.3 limitation only applies locally.

PS: Is there an easy way to save these files locally? Many of them do
not have standard http:// or ftp:// URLs.

Thanks Rich,

for both the effort, as well as the "real" info. Unfortunately, the NEWS is
not
enjoyable, nor does it make sense. especially in the context of why I sent IBM
$200.00
for the privilege of receiving "timely updates to the software
that is important to me." (software choice). Were it some driver for a
"niche"
product I could understand, but we are talking about a "mainstream" product
that
defines the industry. Based upon the following that this thread picked up by
accident,
I think I'm safe in assuming that I'm not alone.

Anyone who says IBm is not trying to suffocate the "child" must have more
faith than
Mary's "Joseph"

Related but separate, MainConcept the German company that was producing the
Video
mixer/creation tool for OS/2 abandoned the OS/2 version at final beta level.
The Winxx
versions have gone gold.

Curiously, the CEO of MainConcept, Markus Moenig, has a listed e-mail slot at
their
site, so I sent an "aw' shucks" letter to him. Suprisingly, he responded
within 4
hours with a sincere explaination (you have to admit, that German quality for
"directness" has it's charm) The reasons listed include "broken tools" such as
the
Visualize "C" set for openclass objects, etc. The response is lengthy, and
several
attempts to post here failed, the server timed me out. I will be glad to
forward a
copy directly to anyone who requests it.

Rich, thanks for getting involved!!

No, they are not G2 files. I can play them on my other os/2 machine.
There is something about the configuratio of this other machine

C = Card instance (I think)
D = "Low" DMA
H = "High" DMA
I = IRQ
A = Port
M = Midi Port
N = OS/2 sound device name
Q = Don't display any messages during boot.

I don't know what the P is for...

Since this isn't a PnP card, (otherwise the PnP driver would have
worked!) you can get these settings from the card's jumpers. You may
need to reference your manual. If you also boot another OS, check the
cards settings in there and copy them to OS/2. Many DOS based games are
pretty good at sniffing out the cards too, even in a VDM.

Good luck!

Subj: Need help with AOpen AW320 Sound Card installation

From: nate@lcs.mit.edu (Nathan Liskov)

Evidently my old ISA pas-16 sound card stopped working so I bought an
AOpen AW320 PCI sound board with a crystal CS4614 chip. Sound cards
with crystal chips have been recommended in this newsgroup as having
good support under os/2.

With the crystal drivers my system hangs on boot. If someone has
gotten this board to work under warp 4, I would appreciate any inputs.

This card is described in
http://english.aopen.com/products/sound/aw320.htm

I got the os2 installation and driver file cwos2303.zip from the
cirrus web site http://www.cirrus.com/drivers/audiodrv/os2.html

After installation, the following lines are added to my config.sys:

BASEDEV=CWCMMPM.SYS /N:CWCAUD1$
BASEDEV=CWGMSG.SYS
BASEDEV=CWCSPUD.SYS
DEVICE=E:\MMOS2\CWGUTIL.SYS
DEVICE=E:\MMOS2\CWWINVDD.SYS
RUN=E:\MMOS2\CWCUTIL.EXE
RUN=E:\MMOS2\CWDAEMON.EXE
DEVICE=E:\MMOS2\OPL3.SYS /N:OPL31$

The first five lines are ok, but if any of the remaining lines are
left in, the system hangs on boot.

I installed on top of previous installations. I tried the method of
de-installing all mmpm/2 multimedia
and re-install. However after deleting the mmos2 directory in my e:
boot directory, selective install of multimedia failed. First, the
selective install was set to c: instead of my boot partition e: and
was grayed out and not changable. Second I got a sys3175 failure
message when hitting the next button on the screen where multimedia
was selected.

I'm running with fixpak 11 on a k6-233 system with 128 mb.

Thanks for any help,

From: Sinan Awad <sinan_awad@computer.org>

Hello all..

This is my first time checking out this newsgroup, since my last news
server was inside my firewall, and
I had virtually no access to OS/2 news..

Anyways, a few days ago I approached develeper.soundblaster.com in a
demand they assist me in progging a
SBLive! driver for OS/2.. I got a preliminary reply, that Creative will
"check it out"..
I sent a request to Asia-Pacific sb site, and they haven't replied yet..

The main reason for not letting me develop this driver easily is that
they were afraid of confidentiality
stuff concerning the new EMU10K1 they use, and the thought that myself
(a private OS/2 user) accessing their solution databases and asking for
their assistance..

attatched is the text sent to developer email a few days ago by me, and
a reply to another request I posted on developer.soundblaster.com..

--------------------- start ----------------------

Hello..

I want to be able to get technical information of the SBLive!, so I
could
write a driver for OS/2 4.0. I am a private user and I am ready to sign
a confidentiality agreement with creative. Since the only motive for me
wanting to become a developer is my need to have sound on my favorite
operating system, I see it as my right to enter the developer circle -
even if I don't represent a commercial company..

The main idea is letting me try and write a driver for OS/2 users, and
then - if creative labs. approves - I could distribute the driver (the
binaries) as a solution for OS/2 users..

I have the main problem of lacking a driver for my SBLive in Linux too,
since the driver Creative supplies is compiled with ONE kernel version
(which is as all Linux programmers know is ABSURD).

Final remark: If I knew that my new card would not work on the two OS's
I REALLY use, I would have been satisfied with an SB16 !!!!!.

Please reply ASAP..

 To the best of my knowledge, Creative is not releasing the SB-Live
hardware
programming information.

  The SB-Live uses an EMU10K1 chipset. This chipset is used in a few
products, like the EMU APS, the PCI512, SB-Live value and the SB-Live.

   You can always "try" to become a Registered Developer with Creative
Labs,
some individuals have, but I suggest that you contact Developer
Relations to
determine it there is any chance at all of getting at least Windows
driver
code that could be modified for OS2. without being a company, with
verifiable products to back you up, I suspect chances that obtaining
such
protected code will be slim to none.

  DEVELOPER RELATIONS
   408-546-6451

What I have is this:
  At this time Creative is not releasing source code for the SB-Live.
We
will always keep it in mind, however we can not "put the genie back in
the
bottle". So until we are certain that it is the right thing to do we
will
not be releasing the source code.

   I am only aware of one company that has obtained the Windows 95/98
SB-
Live Driver source code, and that is Microsoft. Microsoft required it
for
DirectX Certification. Even at that, no source code was made available
for
the internal functions of the chipset used, only the driver that loads
and
send commands to the card.

  With such a requirement from Microsoft, there will be several products
that Creative will not get certified for Microsoft Windows, such as the
PCI64 and PCI128. because most of what this card does is software based.

 Developer Support
