Subj: Version 1.04 of CopyWave

From: "Carsten Arnold" <C.Arnold@Transnet.de>

Hi,

today I have uploded a new version of CopyWave on my homepage.
http://home.t-online.de/home/C.Arnold

The program copies parts from an existing PCM-Wave file starting
from an indicated place in an indicated length into a new Wave file.
The files can be very big.

Now is the buffer size configurable.
Additional can CopyWave now copying asynchron, one thread readed,
another thread write. This is useful if copy from one physical HD to
another physical HD. This can increase the speed of copying.

The program ist Freeware.

Subj: What's in e-store at the Phoenix OS/2 Society meeting, Sept 14: iTool

From: esther@bitranch.com (Esther Schindler)

E-commerce is the new buzzword, and if you believe what it says in the
magazines, every business with an an ounce of sense is creating an
online store. But "enterprise level" tools are overkill for most small
businesses, and they cost an arm and a leg. Plus, there don't seem to
be as many e-commerce site builder options for us OS/2 users.

Until now.

At the general meeting on Tuesday, September 14, a representative from
iTool will show us how easy it is to create an online store. If you've
been thinking about selling something online -- or simply curious
about the procedure -- this is a meeting you can't miss.

What is iTOOL?

iTool, which is a local Scottsdale company, hosts the e-commerce store
at its site. You build and maintain the site through a Web browser...
so the OS you choose is irrelevant. It also means that you have no
extra software to purchase or install.

iTOOL combines high performance Web site hosting with its development
tools, giving you everything you need to run your organization online
in a single package. You can sign up for Web hosting alone -- they
include email accounts, interactive graphical statistics reports,
multiple domain name hosting, a ColdFusion Web Application Server, a
RealMedia Server, and so on. They also include site development tools
like a site creation wizard and specialty templates for business types
(such as photographers and real estate agents).

But what's bound to attract you is its turnkey electronic commerce
features. iTool uses browser based, database driven store
construction, has key word searching, and supports secure credit card
transactions with real time authorization. The cost for the basic
e-commerce site is $49.96 per month.

When and where

This meeting will be the first one held at POSSI's new meeting site,
at Camelsquare. Give yourself a few extra minutes to find the place.
Camelsquare is on the northwest corner of 44th Street and Camelback,
which sounds simple enough. However, the room itself may take you a
few minutes to find. The Camelsquare offices are in lettered
buildings. Ours is in Building G, room G250.

The meeting day and time doesn't change. We're still meeting on
Tuesday, September 14th, at 7:00pm. The general Q&A session will begin
at 6:30. We're sure to have an after-meeting meeting, too, where we
quaff a few ales... but will that be back at our old Coyote Springs
haunts, or will we try a new site for food and drink? You'll have to
show up and find out.

From: dwatson@deltanet.com (Dave Watson)

These are exciting times for Warpheads! Two really big shows are
coming up to show off our pride and joy -- Warp Expo West in Los
Angeles on September 18th, and Warpstock '99 in October. And
we're going all out to make sure you're involved, even if you can't
come to town. We'll be fine tuning our activities in public meetings
on IRC on the #VOICE channel Monday, 5 PM PDT (0000UTC) and
on the #SCOUG channel Wednesday, 7PM PDT (0200UTC).

The VOICE meeting is a Speakup to work out some of the logistics
details of our participation in these events. We'll have continuous
chat, interviews, SpeakUps with Warp dignitaries, live pictures and
other information directly from the convention floors! We want to do
it right, and we need your help. The SCOUG meeting will fine tune
the content as we approach the big date with Expo. Watch the
web site at http://www.scoug.com/internet/expo/index.htm for
presentation materials, as well as information about how to get
connected and join us.

Also, please mark your calendar for this and every Saturday 0800 PDT
(1500 UTC) (except the 18th) for our Warp Systems chat, where we
discuss the future of Warp, how we can make sure it evolves. And join
us this and every Monday at 7 PM PDT (0200UTC) for the Amazing Warp
Help Desk. We've solved so many problems we're thinking of putting up
a sign like McDonalds, showing how many billions served! Bring your
worst problems, and your valuable experience and join this mutually
beneficial collaboration on tweaking our favorite operating system.

Video Editing On OS/2 Lecture At Warp Expo West

You'll learn how to set up your own OS/2-based video editing system,
so you can splice together movies, tv shows and anything else, when
you're a part of Warp Expo West.

Multimedia expert Jerry Rash will have his own video editing system
on-site for you to inspect. And in an extended multi-period session of
lectures and interactive demonstrations, you will learn how to easily
and inexpensively add video editing capabilities to your own OS/2
machine.

Jerry will show movies and other video clips, and will explain the
proper techniques for video capture using OS/2's native VideoIN and the
alternate program Main Actor. You'll watch as he goes through the
editing process, connecting different video scenes together using Main
Actor's splicing functions. You'll learn how to do this on your own
business and home OS/2 machines.

Jerry's lecture will cover the video cards you can use for capturing
from camera or vcr including the extensive testing he's done on many
cards, the chipsets that VideoIN supports and the one video capture
chipset that seems to work best, the tricks for avoiding dropped frames,
and the methods of successfully converting between the many various
video formats including AVI, Indio, Ultimotion and the proprietary
Microsoft ASF format. You'll watch Jerry as he does video editing
on-screen, connecting scenes together in true Hollywood fashion. You'll
find out which Fixpaks to apply for best performance and which new
Fixpaks to avoid.

And during the additional interactive time period you'll get a chance
to actually try Jerry's video editing system yourself.

Video editing on your own machine is now possible and it's
inexpensive. You'll learn how to do this when you attend Warp Expo
West!

Subj: This is not doable - according to others

From: "Kim Cheung" <kimwaicSpamGoToGarbage@deltanet.com>

How would you build 6 machines that has different hardware configurations,
install the operating system from scratch - each having a different
configuration requirement: some has sounds, some are SVGAs, and so forth.
When finished, install close to 100 native programs to each of the six
machines - have them all networked together - and ready for a full day of
pounding from several hundred conference goers walking pass your booth - AND
have a contingent plan in place such that if one of the machines fails - you
would unplug that machine, plug another fresh machine in place - and have it
back on-line immediately...

And what if you are given only minutes - not hours, not days - to have it all
ready before the show starts?

How's that possible?

Come to WarpExpo West this Saturday to see the impossible - impossible, that
is - if you're using Windows.

One Hundred Vendor100's And Exhibitors At Warp Expo West !!

One hundred OS/2 vendors, products and specialists are now a part of
Warp Expo West.

"Guests will see a lot of OS/2 products," says Chairman Rollin White.
"We topped 100 last week and we're still adding new ones."

There's something new this year. A network of machines will
constantly make the software available for guests to try. Two servers
and a number of clients will give every guest a chance to try all the
software they want, see how it works, how it feels, and what it can do.
Every Vendor100 program will be available on every machine. There will
even be online ordering.

"Vendor100 is clearly a better way to demonstrate software," continues
White. "Instead of wandering the show aisles and searching for the
software you need, it's all on one machine in front of you. You can try
each application, switch back and forth between them to compare
features, even check the vendor web sites to see what extra information
is online."

The network itself runs OS/2 Wise Manager, from Serenity Systems.
"You can buy that too," smiles Kim Cheung, Executive Director for
Serenity. Cheung personally supervised the installation of all
software. Wise Manager allows software to reside on one server and be
used anywhere on the network, with individual profiles for each user.
The user machines don't even need hard drives; they can boot directly
from the network and all files are kept on the server.

For the software you need and the systems that run it, come to Warp
Expo West!

Subj: VMware survey at OS2.org

From: "Andreas Linde" <andreas.linde@os2.org>

We finally started another survey at OS2.org.
VMware emailed all interested OS/2 users some
questions, asking how they would like VMware to
support OS/2. We now took all these questions and
created a short survey at http://en.OS2.org/.
Everybody is invited to take part, so we hopefully
get OS/2 supported one day!

We also started a new serie of guest editorials at
OS2.org. Holger Veit, porter of XFree86/2, started
with "OSnux or Li/2?". Each month another very
interesting guest writer will be presented.

Enjoy it.

Subj: Live Video Internet Feed From Warp Expo West

Live Video Internet Feed From Warp Expo West

Warp Expo West announces something very special - a live video feed
over the Internet from the show floor.

You'll be able to watch the video on your Netscape browser.

The continuous broadcasts will begin when Warp Expo West opens it
doors on Saturday.

At this time we aren't exactly sure how many channels of video we will
deliver. The system itself can supply four different channels and we
hope to have all four up and running. There are multiple T1 lines in
place to deliver these four video channels to the Internet backbone.

There are some technical issues that still need to be worked out. The
audio feed is one we're still working on, and fine tuning the HTML code
for your Netscape browser is another.

Still, the video system worked fine in tests on both Saturday and
Sunday and we're confident we can deliver live video to you on "show
day" this coming Saturday. There will be a special link on the Warp
Expo West web pages and you won't need anything but your Netscape
browser.

This is not a "webcam". This is full-motion video, just like you see
on your television.

Even with the multiple T1 lines there are some bandwidth issues and we
may have to reduce the image size, increase the compression level or
restrict the number of simultaneous users depending on how many people
choose to "tune in". A lot depends on the average bandwidth of viewers
like yourself, since cable modems and DSL lines will load our video
system more than 56K modems. Consider this a part of OS/2 history, as
we take a "first shot" at sending full-motion video to your computer
screen.

The idea for the live video feed belongs to Tim Katz of Demand
Systems. (Demand Systems is an OS/2 preinstaller and an exhibitor at
Warp Expo West.)

Tim Katz did the engineering design work, lined up the equipment and
first tested the fully completed system on the Demand Systems network
last Saturday. He and Steve Schiffman, the Network and Facilities
Director for Warp Expo West, then tested the system at the show site on
Sunday.

There was plenty of preparation for the final test. "I had to ensure
that our supplier network was capable of supplying the bandwidth
required," said Schiffman, "and that meant checking on each segment of
the uplink. We'll have cameras in the lecture rooms and in the
exhibitor area, and we'll supply a combination of live video feeds and
repeat broadcasts of the most popular lectures."

Tim Katz had to work out some last-minute connections and spent part
of the testing time working on the HTML. "Netscape supports live video,
but Internet Explorer requires a special add-on which we won't support,"
said Katz. "The Netscape HTML is coded in a certain way and it took a
bit of experimentation to get it right."

And Tim McCoy, owner of Demand Systems and present during the tests,
was very pleased. "We like to come up with a solution no matter what
the problem, and live video on the Internet is in everyone's future for
seminars, trade shows, even family events such as weddings and any
gathering of people. It's cost effective."

Rollin White, Chairman of Warp Expo West, said that "watching live
video over the Internet is a great demonstration of why OS/2 is a
leading technology platform."

And Terry Warren, President of The Southern California OS/2 User Group
(SCOUG), the show's sponsoring organization, said "This is the
technology of the future and we're pleased that SCOUG can bring this new
benefit to OS/2 users via Warp Expo West."

                           - - -

Warp Expo West is free, free, free. The show will be held on
September 18 near Disneyland in sunny Southern California. All the info
