It's part of TCPIP, so32dll.dll and should be in \mptn\dll on your boot
drive.

Does anyone have site that demonstrates the problem where Netscape
downloads binaries as ASCII?

It appears that the IBM sites have been fixed to ensure the FixPak disks
get downloaded as binary.

I need another place to test.

so32.dll is a support file for TCP\IP. The error you are seeing is due to
PM123 not being very friendly. I know of a WSEB installation that was

I have seen instances, where save of an attached file to a mail is
proposed to be saved as a file ot the name 074_230.htm even though the
name of the attached file was 074_230.012. The type of file saved was
ok.

The reason this is done is so that after an ftp download, the cache file
is deleted. Saving images goes down the same path.

I have a tentative fix for this problem that should be in final 4.61.

Note this is also bug on Windows.

Very correct statement. It actually relates to printing a page with a lot of

Depends on who is reading the URL :)

The plug-in pack does not use Netscape retreive URLs. It uses its own
internet engine; the multimedia internet manager in the System Setup
folder.

Because of this, WAVS and such attached in mail and news cannot be played;
also, the bug you mention (Not recognizing %XX) is there.

Right now this is a permanent restriction; we are not actively fixing bugs
in the plug-in pack.

Keyword search works using the following URL:

http://keyword.netscape.com/keyword/Search+Terms

where a + sign replaces all spaces.

I don't think Netscape could be modified very easily since the proxy has told
us the host exists and then puts up its own message.

I'm pretty sure that it will be poorly configured sites which send binaries

I'm afraid that Netscape can't do anything about that.

Actually, it is usally an unknown type. Netscape defaults unknown types to
ascii.

I could add a preference in to force unknown types to binary, but since the
IBM
site is no longer a problem, and that is what most people complain about, I am
not sure if I should.

Bug or feature? Imagine you download 20MB file via ftp. Then it's a good idea
to delete the file from the cache if it is syve and secure on your HD anyway.

Perhaps the behaviour can be retained at least for ftp files (which actually
no one wants to see on the screen;-)

If you are not actively fixing the plug-in pack, can you release the source?
It would be great as a sample for other people who want to write plugins, and
maybe someone else can find the time to fix the bugs.

Anybody else getting an error message?

I think that's why he said it is a tentative fix. He's trying to retain the
FTP
kill without the graphic kill.

It should be possible; obviously other files are kept, so why not graphics?

Possibly. That is why I am reconsidering it. Originally, it was just to
overcome download .dsk files from IBM.

If you mean the "page not found" error page, yes.

I looked at the page source of the URL you quoted and noticed that it
is one of "those" Microsoft pages that attempts to load and run
one of the VirusX controls through the <OBJECT> .... </OBJECT> tags

When I tried to look at the page the the "Search the KB" link points
to http://support.microsoft.com/support/search/default.asp?FR=0
using good old explore.exe, I got a message that I was redirected
to a page that does not exist.

This search page probably has some code in it to dig out the OS
you are running and other private stuff so it can "help" you with
your search.

If you use the WGET program to access the URL it pops out the
message that it is being redirected to
http://support.microsoft.com /support/misc/upgradebrowser.asp
and exits with an "Uknown/unsupported protocol error message

There is obviously an attempt to determine the browser/os combination
so that the page you are directed to can "upgrade" your browser to
one of the Virus95/98/NT based "updates". The combination of
Communicator/2 4.61 and OS/2 doesn't have an upgrade option
available so you get dumped off to the "Page not found" page.

If you had a browser where you could turn off "redirect" you could
probably capture the page source that is checking your system
out and determine what it is looking for. (perhaps you could
take this up with the Communicator/2 4.61 development team
as a "useful" option...... :-)

It's a good thing that Netscape 4.61 OS/2 does not support "magic"
VirusX
controls or you'd find that you suddenly had some of your system
upgraded to one of the Virus98 variants.

(In case you didn't notice I REALLY DON'T LIKE AUTOMAGIC UPDATES)

Oh, believe me, it will be :) I am checking the download type and if it is a

If this is the same one I've reported a couple of times to MS then they
have a check for your browser type in there. It objects to the OS/2 part
of it. I asked them to add it, they didn't. Get OS/2 Junkbuster and use
that to change your user agent that gets reported to the remote site and
have it report in as

I remember hitting this same problem -- downloading unknown types as
ASCII when they're not -- with lynx (and it wasn't IBM sites). This is
supremely annoying when it happens, especially because you know what is
going on but there's nothing you can do about it. Since no one can
guarantee that there won't be new unknown types in the future I think
it makes a *lot* of sense to give users a way to force a download to
binary!

More info...

If you add this line:

   user_pref("os2.emulate.windows", true);

to the PREFS.JS file in your Netscape Communicator for OS/2 Warp
USERS\yourid directory, this Microsoft search page magically works.
(JunkBuster is yet another option.)

Kind of funny, though, that Microsoft managed to make this page break with
their own browser, though. :-)

Anyone feel like reporting it to Microsoft?

Go from there to adding the -r and --user-agent="Mozilla 4.04 (Win95; I)"
parameters to wget, and it finally shows a redirect to z.asp.

Point wget to z.asp in the same location and it begins following links just
fine.

The URL that they should be shunting us to is:

	http://support.microsoft.com/support/search/z.asp

if you really want to use Micro$oft's "Knowledge Base".

And my fingers hated typing "support" and "microsoft" in the same line...

I have found in the past that when I use this

to be very chuffed and I don't seem to get
on very well as compared to using IE5 out

I think you should do it. Not only IBM has a problem with that. So i
prefer having a possibility to set it. Best would be if the pop-up menu
i get with the right mouse button has also an option like 'save as
binary'.

How can it be then that you(?) introduce new bugs (like opening new seamless
Win-OS2 session for each RealAudio link clicked instead of passing the link
to already opened session as it used to be in 2.02)?

Hmmm, why?
What's wrong on downloading unknown types as binaries? :-O

I'd say it is always good to have a choice.

Personally I actually don't care as I never use NS for downloads, wget (+
aWget) rulez!
I might start using it when it will preserve file timestamps... actually,
could you tell us why it doesn't?

Yes, that sounds as a good idea. I second that.
As I said, I've seen a few web sites (configured by lamer "admins") sending
binary files (pictures, ZIPs, ...) with MIME type "text/plain" :(

This is probably because you have a large cache file. The bigger it is,
the longer it takes to close netscape.

See but that's your mistake. The _server_ that set the cookie in the first
place, explicitly said that a lot of site are allowed to see this cookie!

> >A correctly programmed site will not leak any info.

Incorrect. The server (the one that sets the cookie) said that all sites
in x.x are allowed to see the cookie. The problem is that sites shouldn't
be allowed to give a cookie such broad permissions, so it is a client bug
in that regard - but it's the site who made the cookie available in the
first place. Which is why this simply doesn't matter much - just don't set
cookies like that if you (you = remote cookie setting site) don't want
your cookies available to others..

Hmm, let's think about this. Encounter an unknown file type. Futz
with it and insert carriage returns all over the place or leave it
alone and download the file exactly as is? Decisions, decisions ...

Seems to me that the default should ALWAYS be binary. If the binary
guess turns out to be wrong it is usually easy to rectify on the
receiver's computer but if a text mode guess wrongly causes carriage
returns to be inserted then it can be rather difficult to undo the
damage. When in doubt, don't mess with it.

That's my three cents worth.

Nooo!
Please, _DON'T_ put any EAs to downloaded files! No!
This is one of the thing I really hated on 2.02!
I store the downloaded files on a FAT partition and I hate these EA SF.
bloody files uselessly eating up HDD space. I don't need any EAs.

AFAIK people are complaining about that since the 4.04 GA came out.
I simply can't believe that no one has reported it.
I will look through the ns4os2 mailing list at home and I'm sure I will find

Hmm, I don't know, I've seen messages about _pictures_ generally, not about
a particular format.

I would use the term "useless" at all, but there ARE other formats such as on
the net. BMP perhaps being the next most popular. There are also a number of
TIFs and others.

And I'd hope you were referring to both both JPEG and JPG.

Subj: bug with Proxie servers and http-user/password

From: Ariel <arnews@dsgml.com>

If you go to a URL such as http://user:password@host.tld/ without a
proxie, netscape correctly converts it to a http-user and http-password
header and sends that to the server. (At least I think it does that, I
can't imagine it send the URL as is to the server.)

Anyway if you use a proxie server, netscape sends the URL as is, and the
proxie server (at least mine) doesn't know how to deal with URL's that
look like that. IMO netscape should convert it to a standard http-user and
http-password header and send that along with a URL without the
user:password@ part to the proxie.

And why should all of us have to give up the nearly magical extensions that
HPFS brings us, EAs being just one of them, because you don't see the
wisdom of switching away from the archaic FAT design?

If you're not using EAs you might as well be running Windows. And if you
ran HPFS, you'd probably see enough improvement in storage efficiency (as
well as "disappearing" the EA storage function) that you'd be happier with
your system?

Curious isn't it that M$ can't see the marketing downside of this
nonsense: if they make it difficult/impossible for non-WinXX users to use
their site, it is likely to discourage those users ever switching 'cos
they'll never find out how good everything is that they are missing
(excuse me, I've got my brain in Gates mode in order to say that last bit
- and it hurts).

Ah, that's better, my brain's Gates-mode blue-screened and I've rebooted
back to normal now. What's worse is that quite a good number of commercial
sites - who you'd think wouldn't mind where their business legitimately
comes from - emulate this stupidity with the obvious results as far as I'm
concerned: business taken elsewhere.

You are probably correct, but it did not happen with 2.02 or 4.04,
or if it did, it did not anywhere near as long and as such was not
a problem.

I wouldn't call it completly useless, but it doesn't cover the whole problem.

Why don't you decide by type of URL ( FTP:// or HTTP:// ) whether to delete
from cache or not ?
............
Got the answer myself: It would cause any HTTP-download to live in cache as
well.

But think of another option:
If something isn't rendered and displayed but directly written to disk instead
( i.e. download via either HTTP or FTP ) then never write it to diskcache.
Then there is nothing to delete and no further decision necessary. This would
in addition speed up processing a little bit ( reduction of disk-IO ).

If you always download them to the same directory it is easy enough to write
a small batch file that removes them again, it is not easy to add that
information manually on the other hand. But of course, since OS/2 is all
about options, my suggestion would be:

Let's make it an option!

Ok did that but still doesnb;t assign the 3com nic card a io address or
an IRQ. The pcmcia controller and scokets them selves don't have io or
irq. I have the touchstone software sspcic.sys, but I am having trouble
configuring it. It seems to recognize the pcmcia sockets but will not
assign irq or io address.
When the driver loads at boot it shows that it recognizes the ti
pci1220 , and says can't assign irq!!! CARDBUS. Touchstone wants me to
ship the notebook to them for $200 an hour. They are in germany.. I am
not that rich, so I am stuck. PLEASE HELP ME! Is there anyone who
knows the switches for sspcic.sys.

Thanks

Evzen, I'm curious about your problem with EAs. Is it just that they
take up disk space? It's hard to see how that could be a problem for
most people, given the huge disks that are available today. And aren't
most EAs only a fraction of the size of the file they are attached to?
So even if you do have a shortage of storage space the EAs are only
going to account for a small part of the problem.

Or do you have some other problem with EAs?

Then that's a choice you have all the tools it takes to make, locally.
Nobody has to write any further code for you to do that.

But urging IBM to write "down" to a no-EA's FAT-based requirement at a time
when we need to convince IBM of the wisdom of writing UP to the
enhancements provided by the Workplace Shell instead, is going directly
against the interests of your fellows here.

With a 90% market share, do you really think they care?

I was pleasantly surprised some time back to find that FTPBrowser
does just that, but stores the info under the comments section.
Either place would be REALLY useful - especially when you find a
buggered d/l and forgot the URL.

They really should fix that because it should not mater that it's a OS/2
netscape
browser and not the windows version. It's probably done on purpose so that
when
they run their statistical reports, it does not show any warp clients :)

Hi there!

When closing 2.02 there was no delay. It came with the 4.04.
With the 4.61B1 it was still there but with a shorter delay.
In 4.61B2 it has almost dissapeared (for the most part).

Well that is my experience, with 7Mb diskcache and 1Mb
memorycache

That, my friend, is something I beleive 100%. That's just the sort of tactics
that made MicroSoft the dominant PC software vender. Ain't it grand?

Anyway... if I take into account that NS/2 is not preserving timestamps, the
best tool for downloading files is wget + aWget - it keeps the original
timestamps plus it keeps track of all URLs you were downloading from (both
successfully and unsuccessfully).

So actually - do what you want with the binary download problem or
(not)storing EAs... I will keep using (a)Wget and will be much happier than
with the NS/2 download function.

    Bye, Evzen

Has it been officially established that there is no way to prevent NS/2 from
changing the timestamp?

Hmmm. The DEFRAG, that comes with DOS 6.0, or later (I prefer the one
that comes with IBM's PC-DOS 7.0) will not bother the EAs on warp3, or
4 (warp2.x is another story). There is some argument that defraging
will move the data (physically) away from the EAs, so that accessing
the EAs takes longer, but I have, generally, seen an improvement in
access speed.

Hope this helps...
