You mean PPP? What dialer are you referring to?

Hi
I bought a Intellicard Cougar 56k modem and was unable to find the driver in

reply after emailing to them. Do anyone out there know where I can get that
driver. It's pretty funny for a modem company to not have a web site.

Well Sunny, you would need all the fingers on both hands and most of your
toes to count up the number of modem companies that are out of business
and have shut down their web sites. If you are running on OS2 and it is
___not___ a WinModem, you dont need a driver.

If it is a Winmodem send it back to the vendor.

could be lots of things..
I'd start by going through userguid.txt and faq.txt..
it is most likely a setup issue...
like, did you insert into InJoy a KNOWN to be good init string? (like,
if nothing else just use the same one that the dialer which is working
for you uses)..
have you set the port speed too high in InJoy (like, some people set
it to 230,400 and don't have the hardware required to support HALF
that speed....)
or what about the Invalid FCS problem....have you gone through the
LONG list of things in faq.txt on what causes and how you might solve
fcs problems?
or, are you using a script to connect? did you hand edit it? should
you? (MOST folks don't need a script at all)..
if you are using both PAP and CHAP, have you tried turning one off
(like it says in the docs?)
did you click on "Fast"? maybe you need to click on "make slow" until
you have the other problems resolved, and THEN tune it for speed..
have you tried using SIO? it solves most Warp comm problems..
did you see the part in readme.doc that says FREE help is available on
the FREE InJoy Mail List?

but, you probably just need to set it up correctly..

First, you don't need a 'driver' per se for OS/2 - it uses an
honest-to-goodness serial driver. If you are using OS/2, post back a
message with the numbers on the Rockwell chip and I can probably get
you the needed setup strings. If it's not for OS/2 try in an
appropriate news group.

It depends on whether or not the modem is a Class 1 or a Class
2 fax modem. If the modem is a Class 1, setting it to Class 2
will make it NOT work. Most Class 2 modems will work with
software treating them as Class 1 but some will not......

The modem documentation should tell you if it's a Class 1 or 2.

I'm assuming you refer to "Class 1" etc. on the "Modem Type" page.

It depends. The farther down the settings page you can go, the more of
later fax features you can make use of. (Ignore SendFax unless you're sure
you have a SendFax fax modem installed. You probably do not; it's very old
technology, and my guess is that you'll know if you do.)

However, you give up compatibility as you go down the page, and if you
encounter *any* problems with not being able to send or receive faxes,
after making the dialup connnections, the first thing you should try is to
go back up to a lower number. If you only send/receive faxes occasionally,
Class 1 is probably the best thing to select.

Also, look up your modem in the README.DOC in the Faxworks package, before
changing the settings to anything above Class 1, especially if you're
trying to make an older (2 years old or older) modem work.

But, do: Always check the option "Use HW FIFO..." because it speeds things
up, and is ignored if it doesn't apply to your hardware.

Good luck,

Buddy

I meant to imply correctly implemented TCP/IP implementations when I said
most. Sorry 'bout that.

:>----- PRM -----

The original grouping gave out class A addresses to big companies using
the lower 24 bits to denote individual IP addresses. Class B's went to
smaller companies using the lower 16 bits for addresses and Class C
went to those sites needing just 253 addresses (.0 and .255 being
reserved). To mask out the address bits you use the netmask to OR
(or is it AND :-) out the address to identify your subnet. For example
you can have subnets AAA.BBB.100.DDD through AAA.BBB.104.DDD
and the corresponding netmask would be 255.255.252.0 - check the bits
to see exactly how it works. Your machine knows that with the 255.255.252.0
mask that all addresses from 100 to 104 are in the same subnet.

So in this case Bell Atlantic's Class C has just over 65 thousand addresses
that they can hand out. You machine knows that all addresses from AAA.BBB.0.1
to AAA.BBB.255.254 are on the same subnet.

It doesn't actually matter much in this case unless you have it set wrongly.

Make a shadow of the setup.cmd file and keep it on your desktop. If I see that

run it to clear the table back to the original. Works a treat - a fix from IBM
would
work better but we'll have to wait and see.

Try to run netstat -r and look at output. I guess default router is
set to IP reachable only with
mask 255.255.0.0. Anyway, using such mask for large network simplifies
setup although introduces
some drawbacks.

OK

First thing, You are posting on an OS/2 newsgroup, not a Windows
news group. Most of the people that will see your message will NOT
be users of a Windows operating system.

Second, If this is a new PC that you have, you should probably try
to get the dealer you bought it from to verify that the sound card
and drivers are installed properly. They were paid to do this
as part of the purchase price.

The crash with autodetect is usually caused by a problem with
the sound card drivers and is not unusual with Windows.
If it happens with all the games, etc you try to install the
drivers for the sound system are NOT installed properly.

Normally, you can attempt to fix this by deleting the sound system
drivers from the "Hardware" tab of the "System" object in the
"Control Panel". After this is done Windows "Should" detect
the hardware when the system is re-booted and either install
the drivers from the Windows CD or ask for the diskette with the
sound card drivers.

If you are new to this "PC Lark" as you put it, I suggest you get
someone with experience with resolving Windows problems
to help you out. Your computer dealer should be the first one
you try, I believe they are the best people to render assistance
as they know best what equipment was installed in the machine.
