Subj: Trying to connect to NT network...

From: davek@clark.net (David Kunz)

My work, in all of it's wisdom, has decided to switch from Novell to
NT. SO, I upgraded my Warp3/Connect system to Warp 4 and am trying to
get it to talk to the NT servers with limited success. I've readand
followed the RokNRob and the MIT web pages -- they got me as far as
I've am now :)!

TCP/IP works and I can access the internet; I can access the NT
printers; I can see the NT drives, but I can't access them.

When I try to access the NT Domain I get:

NET2142: The requested API is not supported on the remote server.

Cause: The server does not support the API sent to it. This
error can occur if two or more machines are not running the same
    version of the LAN software.

Action: Contact the vendor of the program that was running when
    the error occurred.

When I try to access an individual NT server to assign a drive (I can
see them in the list), (this is how I can successfully access the
printers):

SYS0015: The system cannot find the specified drive.

EXPLANATION: One of the following has occurred:
    1. The specified drive does not exist.
    2. The drive letter is incorrect.
    3. You are trying to RESTORE to a redirected drive.
    4. You are trying to RESTORE to a read-only drive.

ACTION: For situations 1 and 2 above, retry the command using the
correct drive letter. For situations 3 and 4, you are not allowed
to RESTORE to a redirected drive or a read-only drive.

I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but during startup,
it get:

REQ0815: The program cannot get the connection ID. Error: <code>.

Cause: The program cannot get the connection ID. Error: <code>.
NetWare Client for OS/2 tried to locate a NetWare server when it
initialized. Either no servers are currently running or a cabling
    problem exists.

Action: Make sure the NetWare server is running and functioning
properly. Also make sure the OS/2 machine has a working connection
to the network; then try again. If the problem persists, contact
    your Novell Authorized Reseller.

I can access the directory tree of the old Novel system, but I
    can't assign a drive letter.

My system's an old Gateway Pentium 120 with only 32 meg of RAM. It
has an old 3com NIC (I don't remember which one).

I've installed the following:
  fixpak 11
  v4rsu
  w08421
  w08423
  w08424
  w08610
  w08620

  ip08407

[c:\]inetver
Version numbers of TCP/IP protocol drivers:
   SOCKETS.SYS: 6.2001
   AFOS2.SYS: 6.2000
   AFINET.SYS: 6.2002

Any and all suggestions welcome!

Subj: Problem with WARP Server Backup/Restore

From: sruli87202@aol.com (SRuli87202)

Could somebody please give me a hand here?

I am currently in the process of setting up a scheduled backup for our file
server. We have an IBM 3510 SCSI Tape Drive which we are using for storing
our
nightly backups on. We are using the Backup/Restore software that came with
WARP server.

The problem that we are experiencing, is that when a backup is scheduled to
occur, the backup program starts but then shortly there after suspends and a
message displaying that says:

Please insert tape with the following label into the drive.
		ARCHIVE IBM 4326NP/RP
	ID
		Everything to Mandy-1.

Mandy by the way is the name of our file server. The tape of course is
already
in the drive. If somebody is here to click on the OK button, then the program
backs everything up just fine. Of course there is not much point in having
something set up on a scheduler if somebody has to be here to make it run. So
can somebody please tell me what I need to do to keep this message from
suspending and displaying that message?

I would really appreciate any help that I could get on this.

Thanks.

Sincerely,
Steve Rulison.

PS. Could you please email me your response. Thanks again.

Subj: DHCP Problem

From: "Eric A. Erickson" <drowelf@nospamvnet.net>

My new notebook can not seem to receive the DHCP Offer from my Warp Server
Advanced (TcpIp 4.1) Server. I can see the DHCP Server offering the address to
the client, but it never seems to accept it. I am running Warp 4 FP11 and
TcpIp V4.0
with MPTS IP 8424 stack. I know that DHCP is working properly since I can get

a DHCP Served address when I'm at a client site.

So how can I debug this problem?

Hmm, in 4.61 you can specifu seperate POP and SMTP servers. Don't
remember how it was in 4.04 but even 2.02 lets you do that.

Same in 4.04, however it does not let me specify two different
usernames or passwords.

I work for a university. I want to recieve my mail through my employer
at work and at home (which I do) but when I am at home I want to
send it via my private ISP. the university prohibits send mailing from
off campus location except through telnet or webmail. Both methods
are very clumsy for the volume of mail that I get.

Not with 4.04. Netscape 4.5 and above (such as the 4.61 beta)
allow you to use different SMTP and incoming mail server user
names.

If you're using IMAP, though, I don't think I'd use
even the second 4.61 beta. It's still flaky (although
even buggy, Netscape 4.61's imap support is better than
4.04).

You should be able to set up the browser to use your private ISP's
SMTP server for sending mail, and the university's pop-server (and
password) for receiving mail, while you are logged into your private
ISP. The only problem might be if the university won't allow you to
log in to the pop-server from an external domain.

The mail config in Netscape allows one to supply a different username
for the outgoing server and a different one for the incoming.

I do not think you need any auth info for the outgoing beyond the fact
that you have an IP address that is allowed to send outgoing mail. After
all, the server is run by your ISP that assigned you the IP address. Try
removing the outgoing username and it should still work (does here).

smtp doesn't use username/password authentication so if you can
send through smtp and receive with POP3 you should be set.

Have you tried looking at the profile option? I.e. with NS 4.04 and later
you can start netscape as netscape.exe -mail -P"isp1" This will bring up
the e-mail portion of NS with the the appropriated settings for isp1.
It's not as convenient as a program like pmmail but it works for
multiple accounts.

I avoided Netgear (aka BayNetworks) like a leper because they are the
only network hardware manufacturer I have ever seen which does not
advertise OS/2 compatibility. However, I did find in the specs for the
FA310TX (I believe that's your card) that NDIS 2.0 and Netware drivers
are available:

http://netgear.baynetworks.com/support/support.shtml/#nc

Good luck. Buy a Linksys next time.

Do you have the latest fixes to PSNS installed? I thought I saw where
the last fp for PSNS 5 fixed that - at least our LAN support people
haven't bugged me about it lately. They may have upgrade to PSNS 6,
but the problem seems to be gone here.

Even with the soundblaster card removed, I could never get the second

perfectly.

I have a new soundcard comming that I can change the IRQ's on.

Does the PSNS version on Warp Server for e-Business include

I have tried and tried to get my OS/2 box talking to our Novell Network

the Netware client running.
Does anyone know of a comprehensive description of how to set up and
configure an OS/2 Warp 4.0 box so it talks to a Novell Network nicely?
I am using an SMC8000 NIC and the network supports Ethernet II frames.
Any help would be gratefully received especially any sample Protocol.ini
and IBMLAN.ini files as well as Net.cfg. As per usual trying to make
sense of the plethora of settings that are required is near on
impossible for the feeble minded such as I.

Are server and client in the same subnet / ring / segment or are
routers involved, which may suppress discover etc packets.

You can use the "User Profile Manager" or "Shared Resourses and
Network Connections" to create/change/delete users. Or if you want to
start from scratch with just the default user ID and password, replace
the NET.ACC file in \IBMLAN\ACCOUNTS with the one from
\IBMLAN\INSTALL. There is also the "NET PASSWORD" command.

Did you set the slot number of the second card? In some cases you have
to edit the .nif file in ibmcom\macs to enable the option to set the
slot. Without this the PC sees the same card on both interfaces. You
can verify this with netstat -n.

You should be able to install 8423 (it is a refresh) and apply 8424. The
8423 install will complain about backleveling MPTS, but it is what you
want to happen. Apply the latest 4.xx TCP/IP stack fixes (the MPTS
fixes may dance on some TCP/IP code).

Microsoft gotcha, if you first tell your computer you don't want logon
screens by not giving a username and password and click OK, on
initialization then a registry entry will prevent you from getting a network
login after installing a card, protocol and client. The Fix! Run regedit,
search for autologon or autologin, I can't remember, when found delete the
key, close regedit reboot the computer. Voila. Should do the trick.

The original grouping gave out class A addresses to big companies using
the lower 24 bits to denote individual IP addresses. Class B's went to
smaller companies using the lower 16 bits for addresses and Class C
went to those sites needing just 253 addresses (.0 and .255 being
reserved). To mask out the address bits you use the netmask to OR
(or is it AND :-) out the address to identify your subnet. For example
you can have subnets AAA.BBB.100.DDD through AAA.BBB.104.DDD
and the corresponding netmask would be 255.255.252.0 - check the bits
to see exactly how it works. Your machine knows that with the 255.255.252.0
mask that all addresses from 100 to 104 are in the same subnet.

So in this case Bell Atlantic's Class C has just over 65 thousand addresses
that they can hand out. You machine knows that all addresses from AAA.BBB.0.1
to AAA.BBB.255.254 are on the same subnet.

It doesn't actually matter much in this case unless you have it set wrongly.

You may be able to install 8423 over the 86xx stuff, but I wouldn't recommend
it.
There are some files that are relocated with the new "stacks"

If you remove IBMCOM and MPTN, and their references in the CONFIG.SYS. You
should be able to install 8423 fine.

David,

I don't know whether you saw the following snippet from Brian Morrison
but it might be of interest to you.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks to Ivan Adzhubei (did I spell that right? Probably not!) I have
discovered how to stop the Trap 0002 screen I got when trying to run
any Java application.

If you have the standard Warp 4 TCPIP stack, version 4.02<something>
then attempting to install the WR08610 fix pack screws up things badly.
After re-installing WR08423 and WR08424, giving version 4.02w, I got
these traps. Turns out that the culprit was having the TCPIP32.DLL from
WR08610 in the same directory as TCP32DLL.DLL from the 4.02 stack.
Deleting the TCPIP32.DLL file cured the problem.

Ouch... I was hoping to avoid that. It took me quite a bit of
experimenting to get it all working (I'm hooked to an NT network) and
I'm afraid that I've forgotten some "insignificant", but necessary
step :(. Also, I thought a selective reinstall of "File & Print
Sharing" had major problems with line lengths in config.sys?...

If that's my only option, I guess that I'll wait and hope for another
refresh...

Thanks for replying!

Try to run netstat -r and look at output. I guess default router is
set to IP reachable only with
mask 255.255.0.0. Anyway, using such mask for large network simplifies
setup although introduces
some drawbacks.

Other than getting some errors on reboot (after removing MPTS/IBMCOM) the
peer client shouldn't have to be reinstalled. After reinstalling an MPTS(and
adding the protocol you use for peer), Peer should work.

Peer is in the IBMLAN and MUGLIB directories.

>If that's my only option, I guess that I'll wait and hope for another

The 32bit stack can work fine. Make sure you...

 a) take out the route add -net ... statement in the MPTN\BIN\SETUP.CMD
    (it's not necessary)
 b) you probably want to add a "-netmask x.x.x.x" to the "route add default"
line.
(the netmask depends on your "local" network scheme, usually
255.255.255.0)

You want to remove the "No Network Adapter" since you have a network adapter.
Change the "number" of the 3com protocols to 0 and you're setup should work.
(you also don't need 802.2 normally)

like this:
	3Com ETHERLINK 10 ISA(3c509b) FAMILY OS/2
		0 - IBM OS/2 NETBIOS OVER TCP/IP
		0 - IBM TCP/IP

The problem may be that "lan0" to TCP/IP is the "NO NETWORK ADAPTER"
interface, which doesn't "go" anywhere. "No Network Adapter" is for a machine
without a network card.

The OS/2 side may be being confused by the fact that you have
a "NO NETWORK ADAPTOR" configured with a TCP/IP stack
and NETBIOS as the first interface.

run MPTS and remove the TCP/IP and NETBIOS for the
"NO NETWORK ADAPTOR", then remove the
"NO NETWORK ADAPTOR".

Close MPTS and let it update your files, reboot and then configure
TCP/IP with the appropiate addresses. LAN0 should now be the

Subj: What is IBMNULL print driver is for???

From: ekadakal@aol.com (EKadakal)

Hello Everyone:

The problem is:

I have removed all printers from Warp4 printer folder. However when I do Print
Screen from FULL SCREEN applications (DOS or OS/2), it still prints through
the
LPT1 if there is a printer attached. However if no printer is attached, then
it
completely locks up when presses PrintScreen on a DELL Gn Optiplex machine.

I am suspicious that the printing is done via IBMNULL, but why is that it
would
lock up if there is no printer attached

Does anyone have any idea?

Regards

John

I would double check Linux support, too.

If you have the OS/2 ODI drivers for the Netgear FA310TX (or any other
network adapter), although not ideal it's sufficient.

Go ahead and install OS/2 Warp's networking just as you usually do, but
install the Novell NetWare Requester LAST. (You can find the requester at
http://www.software.ibm.com/swchoice.)

Novell's NetWare Requester has a piece of code that allows NDIS-type
networking (specifically MPTS) to "ride" on top of ODI drivers (like that
available for the NetGear).

Once you've installed the Novell NetWare requester you should be all set,
and you can (carefully) remove the bits of the requester you may not need
(unless you're accessing a NetWare server).

Subj: dual port intel or adaptec server net cards in OS/2?

From: chadpaul@netexpress.net

Hello,

Has anyone ever used a dual port ethernet card in a os/2 warp 4 system?
I am looking at the Intel or Adaptec for such cards to maybe use.
I want to be able to use the dual port card to do N.A.T. between my LAN and
the Cable modem / Internet.
Any other good brands of such cards to use that have OS/2 support?

Then go into \mptn\dll and delete tcpip32.dll, otherwise your Java

Subj: Upgrading TCP/IP and MPTS from scratch.

From: Michael W. Cocke <cocke@ibm.net>

I've been putting off upgrading the MPTS and TCP/IP stuff for a while,
hoping for a fixed fixpack, but it looks like I'm running out of time.

Is there a simple combination and/or sequence of fixes to install to
MPTS and TCP/IP on a Warp 4 system that won't cause more problems than
the fix is supposed to solve?

I've never upgraded MPTS or TCP/IP - it's all at base level. The system
is at level 7.

I wouldn't mind getting all the extra goodies, like a 32 bit stack and
nfsd, but I can live without it. What I do need is to get Y2K
compliant.

Thanks!

Subj: Lan Server Print Utility

From: "George Barrowcliff" <barrowcl@flash.net>

I am using IBMs LanServerPrintUtility with two IBM Network 17 printers with
TCP/IP and Ethernet. Both printers are configured and show up in the LSPU.

Printer1 is using \PIPE\NPM0, Printer2 is using \PIPE\NPM1

I have redirected the outputs from the spooler like this:
SPOOL /D:LPT1 /O:Printer1 & SPOOL /D:LPT2 /O:Printer2

This works for a few hours then printing directed at lpt2 ends up on
Printer1.

When I check the port \PIPE\NPM1, it is not attached anymore.
If I reissue the command, LPT1 and LPT2 work OK.

Is there a different way this should be done?
Does each printer need its own copy of RPRINT?

TIA GWB

I am confused myself about the situation for MPTS: there is a series of
fixes labelled w0842x and w086xx ... is it safe and always wise to install
the "latest" number?

I never had a problem applying any tcp/ip update. If the only networking

an MPTS update. That's only my subjective impression tho'.

I have several of them installed in machines (mine and clients)
and haven't seen any problems. I'm using the July 14, 1998
drivers from the D-Link web site.

However, I haven't wired them into WOL MB jack.

The invalid .NIF error would seem to indicate that the
driver set is corrupted somehow. This is the .NIF in
the driver set I'm using (see below).

The machines that I am most familiar with are using
WR8610 MPTS (no other patches). I "think" the others
are as well.......
