Subj: Image compression

From: "Jan A" <jana.persson@telia.com>

Anyone know of any REALLY efficient image compression utility? The type
image I need compressed is a 200 dpi/256 grays with mostly printed text and
lines on it. In the BMP format, the image is just above 1 MB in size and I
need it to be under 10K. Lossy compression OK but have to be able to read
handwritten text after decompression and printout.

The amount of grays is actually mostly noise, so the closest I've come this
far was to reduce the amount of grays to 2 and use GIF89a, that took it down
to some 17K. But I desperately need to get rid of another 10K or so. Would
IFS do it (fractals)? Wavelets? I have no experience with those.

A clue, anyone?

/Jan A

Subj: Warp 4 Audio Editor bugs. Any fixes?

From: bibbings@my-deja.com

All:

I very recently upgraded from Warp 3 to Warp 4 and there seem to be
several serious problems with the Warp 4 Audio Editor that didn't exist
with the Warp 3 Audio Editor. I use it quite a bit so it is very
annoying to me. I've searched IBM's website and DejaNews and have not
found any mentions of this problem except one, and he was looking for
the same answer that I am looking for.

The problems include:

1. Crashes after recording 16bit/22.5khz audio for more than 4 minutes.

2. Crashes the Workplace shell when some special effects are
applied, namely fade out and mix from file.

3. Paste from clipboard usually just inserts a bunch of noise
instead of the intended audio.

Is there a fix pack available to solve these problems? Has anyone else
experienced any of these problems?

I am running with a SB16.

Bob

Actually our web site (www.hauppauge.com) doesn't mention OS/2. Any
of our PCI TV cards will work under OS/2, however not all features are
supported yet. Basic audio and video does work.

The drivers can be downloaded from:

http://www.wdi.co.uk/os2tv/download.htm

If you plan on making the purchase, let me know and I'll send you a
"Getting Started" message.

Get the NewClear 3D Wave table sound card. It supports all the sound
features in OS/2, including simultaneous sound in both WPS and
Win-OS/2, and full-duplex...more....

Folks:

Just for the record:

IBM updated the Device Driver Online page today (8/27/99).

	Guess what?

The removed the BJC-5000 from the list of supported printers.

I guess that someone got a bit to eager in adding printers to
the Canon list, and just imported everything he/she/it could list onto
the page.

What are the details on this card? Is it ISA or PCI? Which chipset
does it use; Crystal? Who makes it and distributes it plus is there a
URL for information, drivers, service support and so on?

I think there are many folks whom would dearly love to find a PCI-type
card which can handle the job ...

Sound at last!

I was surprised to hear system sounds from my Labtec USB Speakers, immediately
on
plugging
them in to the USB port on my work PC already booted to OS/2 Warp 4.

I wasn't successful in playing MIDI, or playing CDs, but the Multimedia
notebook
has a page for USB MIDI. I'll have to experiment a bit when I get back to
work
on Monday.

The AudioEdoitor ist very buggy and as far as I know these problems are not
fixed.Sorry!
There are memory leaks and it crashes if I want to work with files greater

Actually, the audio editor is crashing because it is running out of RAM.
Increase the size of your swapfile, or add RAM (I have 256 MB, and I
load and edit 15 min., 44k, stereo files with relative ease).

Getting a recent fixpack is also a good idea (at least FP 9)...

I'm rebuilding a Warp Connect system from scratch, and when I install FP40,
my SB16PnP card hangs on the startup sound. Any attempt to use either wav or
midi hangs the system and I must Ctrl-Esc to close the application. It works
just fine with no fixpack applied!

I even attempted to apply FP39 and got the same results.

I'd try FP38, but I can't find it anymore.

If someone has a workaround for getting it to function properly WITH FP 39 or
40, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks!

I've had the problem with probably the last 20 fixpacks. There is an
sb16d2.sys driver that my card (non-PnP) likes, and it doesn't like
any of the newer ones. What happens if you go back to the original
driver contained on the CD?

I had trouble with FP 40 and went to FP 32, the first one that is Y2K.
I have an old SB 16 and everything works fine.

This is an ISA PnP card, no longer on the market, but you might
find one on the auction / resale market. The Co. that made it
(and a whole lot of other gear) was in Chapter xx reorganiza-
tion, last I heard. Their website, at www.newcominc.com was
still up, but you couldn't really contact them.

Hi,

I have an Hauppauge Primio TV-card. My system has Warp 3 + FP40 and a
Matrox Mystique 220 4MB video adapter (drivers 2.23.082). I installed
the latest Abbotsbury drivers (1.041W) and Stefan Milcke's StWTV
software (1.09beta build 2789).

The Abbotsbury drivers load OK. StWTV displays a garbled image (but
sound is OK): the top two thirds of the screen features the TV image
with colour stripes on it, the lower third is a thick plain colour
stripe.

I tried 3 different colour depths (16M, 65K, 256) but that only
changed the colour of the stripes (magenta at 16M, green at 65K and
256). I also tried to install older (1.16D) Abbotsbury drivers, as per
Stefan's advice, but they wouldn't recognize my TV card at all.

Any suggestions? I have tried neither the GRADD nor the SDD drivers,
as I'm leery of changing the video setup since the current Matrox
drivers have been working fine for everything else. In case this is
the only option, is there a dependency between GRADD and SDD? Is there
a GRADD version that is known to work better with my particular
Mystique 220 board?

Thanks in advance,

Dominique

Try View->"Digital Transfer" in the system CD-Player. That might work.
It can get choppy and takes a big chunk of your CPU time, FYI.

     I don't know what happened ( I actually pre-ordered one). I got tired of
waiting, and bought an AOpen AW320 PCI card ($23) which uses the Crystal
CS4614 chip. It works fairly well, given the limited drivers (which would be
the same for the TidalWave BTW). If the drivers are ever brought up to par,
this card would be an extremely good bargain.

I just upgraded my system and applied fix pack 10 before installing the
drivers for the
Gravis Ultrasound card.
When I try to "Minstall" it after selecting the driver and starting the
install I get a
system error, the dreaded "PMMERGE.DLL" causing the problem.

Is this a problem with the fixpack? or is the new system causing the problem.

Is anyone running the GUS in fp10?

I don't realy want to re install from the start first unless I know that the
driver will
work in fp10.
I'm hoping that it's a problem in "MINSTALL" and FP10.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

regards Dennis.

Also, the CPU time use as seen in Pulse, or WarpCenter is not visible,

I posted this getting started a few weeks ago, maybe it will help you
understand what GRADD does for you. The problems you are having relate to
our DIVE code. Frankly I'd like to see the DIVE stuff fixed / improved,
however it is not a priority because GRADD mode is so much better. I
realize that this doesn't help if your card doesn't have a GRADD available
for it.

We are having trouble with some GRADD drivers. Or card doesn't work with
the SciTech stuff (yet), and depending on your VGA card, we may or may not
work with GENGRADD. Of course our top priority is to get all this stuff
strait before going back to look at the DIVE stuff, but I think we can
work with SciTech to make our driver work on as many VGA's as possible.

Anyway, give the following a read and let me know if you have any
questions.

Getting started. Before you try the applications from Milcke or Sunley
make sure the driver is working properly. I suggest doing this in three
steps: 1. Update OS/2 (Fix packs and GRADD if there is one for your VGA
card) 2. Install and setup the driver for Dive operation. 3. Set up the
driver to use GRADD (if available).

Step 1. You should use a VGA that has a GRADD available for it. GRADD
allows us to directly blit video to the VGA screen with out involving your
CPU. This is the only way to get 30 frames per second on slower
machines. Fast machines (>266 MHz) may be able to do 30 fps without
GRADD, but the CPU will very busy. GRADD requires at least FixPack 6. I
suggest installing the latest fix pack available from IBM. Once your fix
pack is installed, download and install the latest GRADD drivers from IBM
or in some cases from your VGA manufactures web site. Or you can give the
SciTech drivers a try. We have only tested our driver with the IBM GRADDs
at present, so it may be safer to start with them.

Step 2. Installing the driver. Go to
http://www.wdi.co.uk/os2tv/download.htm and grab "The WinCast PCI driver
version 1.XXXX (full install)". Unzip this into a new folder, then open
an OS/2 command line window and change to that directory. Type "minstall"
and install the package. Reboot your machine. You should see a WTV icon
on your desktop. If not you can create one by making an alias of the one
in the folder you created. The program takes two parameters, "wcast" and
"1". So the command line options will be "wcast 1", assuming a normal
install and only one board in your system. Next go to the Multimedia
Settings notebook. There will be a tab for the WinCast. I think it's the
third page that allows you to select an input, region (country) and
channel. You won't see anything at this point (unless the driver is
enabled for GRADD, which if you are following these instructions, it's
not), but you still need to select the proper region.

Note, WTV.EXE will never use GRADD to display the video but instead it is
a very simple DIVE application. The idea is to get the hardware up and
running without GRADD first. However GRADD does improve DIVE
performance. Let me clarify this a bit. When I say "using GRADD" there
is some ambiguity. Your VGA card can have a GRADD driver installed, thus
using GRADD and the WinCast driver can be running in DIVE mode. This
means that the WinCast driver is not using the services that a GRADD
driver offers. So, there are three possibilities:

1. System has no GRADD at all. No GRADD driver has been installed for
your VGA card.

2. System has a VGA card with a GRADD driver installed for that card, but
WinCast driver not using it. GRADD drivers are newer and solve many video
problems you may have with newer versions of Warp. For example, Home Page
Publisher (an OS/2 web publishing product
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/clerin/ ) can not draw
transparent images properly without GRADD drivers due to a bug in the IBM
non GRADD driver code. GRADD will also make DIVE (used to draw images to
the screen) much faster. In this mode the WinCast driver used DIVE to put
video on the screen.

3. System has a VGA card with a GRADD driver installed for that card, and
the WinCast driver has been enabled to use it. This is the best situation
and the one we hope everyone can use. Here you install your GRADD driver
for your VGA card, then enable the WinCast driver to make use of the new
services. The driver download will have a file called GRADD.DOC that you
should read. Enabling the WinCast driver to use GRADD requires a
CONFIG.SYS change. ***HOWEVER***, WCAST.EXE will not take advantage of
the newly installed services. Not only do the services need to be enabled
for the WinCast driver by changing the CONFIG.SYS, but the application, in
this case WCAST.EXE needs to know how to use the services. This may be a
source of confusion, indeed it confused me at first. So, once the driver
has been enabled to use GRADD, you'll need an application that will use
WinCast driver's GRADD functions. Lorne Sunly's application is one
example of a TV application that will use GRADD if available. You can
also download the Abbotsbury Toolkit. Example 4 is similar toe WTV.EXE
but will use GRADD. You don't need a compiler as a built version of the
example is included in exe form.

Step 3. At this point you should be able to see video using WCAST.EXE.
The program allows you to select an input, and there is a basic "remote"
window that allows you to enter channel numbers. If you have not been
able to do this, then don't bother with GRADD until we get you past step
2. Step three is just a matter of following the directions in GRADD.DOC.

Do not try to use the WarpTV application from IBM even though it's on our
site. The WarpTV application from IBM does not yet work with our driver.
IBM UK has promised to update WarpTV to work with our driver, but it has
not yet been done.

If you need further assistance please contact me.

Thank you,

John Rodriguez

I tried it but it won't work here the
error message I get :

"Can't open drive
[d:\mmos2\sounds\boo.wav]. Make sure the
drive is ready and not use by any other
application"

and when I use the INFO... button here's
what I get:

SOURCE: cdif.c, Aug 16 1999
LINE: 2064
PM ERROR: 0x1017
C ERRNO: (none)
CD ERROR: (none)

I use the demo d/l directly from the RSJ
web site and it's 2.83 (I will buy it
soon :-) )

BTW. I tried with WAV file that comes
with OS/2 to see if it would work

The WAVs have to be in a very specific format, 16bit PCM, 44.1(or
sometnionh like that) kHz.
Check them first.

Not a great idea, IMO. Since FP32's time (October 1997) there
has been a lot of extra Y2K fixes in OS/2 up to FP40 just by looking at
the APARS for them. Best thing to do is simply back up the current
driver for the SB. Apply FP40 and if you lose sound, simply backlevel to
the SB driver from FP32.

My card is a Matrox Mystique 220, which should be supported in GRADD
mode. I gave the GRADD stuff a quick look, but reverted to the Matrox
drivers as I found them more stable and speedier.

In the mean time, I discovered there were parameters to play with in
Multimedia Setup and I have been able to get a much better image by
changing the video format. Still, I don't know which of the 4
PAL-alternatives should be used in my country (Finland).

The documentation for the Abbotsbury drivers is a bit scarce, which
makes the learning curve tough for beginners to TV-cards like myself
;-).

Thanks for your help!

An OS/2 metafile can contain almost anything, from a printer spool job
including downloadable fonts to a single OS/2 bitmap. It should be possible to
convert a Windows metafile, which is a much more limited creature, to an OS/2
metafile. The opposite is only possible in special cases.

You could get the Windows metafile into an OS/2 metafile format simply by
printing it under WinOS/2 and intercepting the spoolfile. The spoolfile is an
OS/2 metafile, but it is probably not in a format your application will be
able
to handle.

I think the best way is to convert them to a format like EPS, and exchange
that. This should work for some types of metafiles.

Subj: Bad Sound in WinOS2

From: Jack Gillis <jgil@widomaker.com>

I am having a problem running a program with proper sound playback under
Warp 4 FP7 WinOS2

The sound card is an ESS 1869 based one and I have the latest drivers
from ESS. However, I don't believe it is driver problem because the
same problem occurs with other soundcards and drivers.

The program, Success in Spanish from Syracuse Language Systems, is
loaded onto the HD but reads its wave files from the CD. There is no
way to change this.

The sound is not correct, it is a cyclical static sound. The program
allows me to record my voice in a HD resident wave file and play it back
successfully. It only seems not to be able to play its own wave files
from its CD properly. It does work fine in all respects when I boot to
W98.

Now, the wav files in question play properly under WinOS2 when I use
any variety of Windows 3.1 media players, in particular, CoolEdit
mostly. So I feel the wav files are good.

I've concluded that there must be something in my WinOS2 settings that
need to be adjusted but have adjusted myself blue with no success.

Can someone help me with this? I will really appreciate it.

Setting up a plotter driver (like the HP7550) and printing to file would
probably work. I suspect that word will still not give you what you want,
because the HPGL file is going to be a vector graphic and Microsoft has
never quite figured out what that means.

Really? It does on my system... About 10-20%. Then again I have an ISA
16-bit sound card and you have new 32bit (I assume) USB speakers! :)

Have you tried the Virtual WinOS/2 drivers on hobbes? They're "wav"
only, meaning no MIDI, but they mostly worked on my SB16... Also allows
WinOS/2 to share the sound device properly. Don't think it's been
updated since the first release though...

Thank you for your response.
It would be great if there is a sound card witch
works like a normal sound card under OS/2 and has
a spdif input connector working with Windoze. This
avoids changing the sound card while changing my
boot partition. The purpose is to copy audio data
from a dat recorder to my harddisk.

Check your windows-session settings:

Hope it magically fixes things.

Per some first-hand reports in the Compuserve OS/2 fora, Crystal
Computer (makers of this card) has now gone off into a
totally new business. (Something to do with I-net Telephony ?)
Also, I'm pretty sure Centari went "Poof !" some time ago. Even a few
months ago, calls & e-mail to them went unanswered.

Another idea, go into the Control Panel of Win-OS/2. Click on
drivers. Scroll down to where you see [MCI] Sound. Click on it and bump
it up to the highest setting (9). Default is on 4. This really helped
when I had a Opti 924 soundcard back in 1997.

If you use a HP printer with the HPGL-level Word works with and use only
printer
fonts (so the output will not contained downloaded fonts to the printer),
setting it
to print to file ought to work. I do not have Word to test with (and do not
feel it
as a loss).
The resulting filr is of type "Printer specific", and has 7 lines of spool
control
before the HPGL reset command (ESC-E). This ought not to bother a properly
made HPGL
import filter.

It may be useful to toggle "Fast system fonts".

From: "Rolf Lochb?hler" <rolf@together.net>

RenamePics is a program that extracts exposure information from
digital photos. The original code of RenamePics was written by
Denise Hallmark and is available from Hobbes
<http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/>.

Brian Morrison and I have been working on a new version of
RenamePics that can also handle the EXIF format used by newer
Olympus digital cameras. The older RenamePics code is included in
this new version, but had to be modified a bit.

So, we're looking for people who use the older version and would
like to run a few tests to verify that this new version still works
like the old one.

In case you'd like to help, please send me a note and I'll send you
a copy of the new executable.

Thanks.

Previously I had very good technical support from

This is a very good card, much better than the AWE 32 and AWE 64 I

The latest drivers had a bug, but with the help od crystal I have full

Well, depending on your needs, you could use PMView. If you have more than
basic cropping and manipulation needs, then I would consider using Gimp.
Gimp needs XFree86 to run, but it is equal to if not rivals PhotoShop in
features.

Thanks Joe! I too have the Crystalizer Tidal Wave 128 ISA card and am pleased
with
the performance. I have since upgraded my system which only has one ISA slot.
I'm
using that for the Modem. That's why I was interested in the new Crystalizer
128
PCI with full duplex support for OS/2, Win32. etc. Crystal Computer, owned by
Jim
Melin, I believe have relocated from California to New Jersey with Centari
Computers in Dayton, Ohio being the distrubtor of the new card. My last e-mail
correspondance with Thom of Centari stated that Crystal Computer was working
out
last minute TAD related issues and the pre-orders for the card would be
honored by
the end of July. Since that time, nothing. The web site for Crystal has
changed and
the Centari URL is broken. Crystal Computer is not a fly by night company.
They
supply TidalWave ISA cards for IBM on most Aptivas. Once again anyone that has
talked to Jim Melin and/or Thom (I believe Davis), keep us posted

Thanks,
Brad

Hmm, you seem to be having more luck than me!
I've installed the new USBAUDIO drivers and upon rebooting the system
sounds are enabled and sound great, however, when I try to use the
Digital Audio application it refuses to play any WAV file (including the
system sound WAV files). If I sample a CD audio track to a WAV file and
double click on the icon it plays! Yet double clicking on one of the
system sound icons produces nothing.

The game BUGS won't allow me to select the sound option. Also, following
the instructions for getting the CD player working results in a message
'Error in performing monitor commands : Device driver not found' which
would suggest that the driver couldn't be found :)

Maybe I should try uninstalling all the USB drivers and reloading...

BTW, in my Multimedia folder I have two icons for each of the
applications ie: I have an icon for the CD player called Compact Disk,
however, I also have another copy called Compact Disk 2. This is the
same for Digital Video and MIDI, but not Digital Audio? What's going
on??

The sound I have had from the speakers is excellent though and I haven't
noticed the CPU usage going up whilst playing WAV files (the only one
I've sampled!).

Cheers,
Roly.

Subj: Ensoniq ES1371 Driver

From: sporadic@my-deja.com

Hi All,

I am having some problem with the newly released ES1371 driver. The
problem I think I'm having is that OS/2 can't see the board because of
the shared IRQs.

The system I have has the Ensoniq ES1371 on IRQ 15, a Tekram SCSI board
on IRQ 15, and the USB (USB controller and mouse) also on IRQ 15. It's
an Abit BH6 motherboard.

In the Hardware Manager, all it could detect is the USB stuff on IRQ 15,
the SCSI card nor the ES1371 shows up at all. I've tried redetecting
according to the ES1371.TXT.

I've also tried tweaking the PIRQ settings in the BIOS, but it seems
like the slots used by the cards are the same.

Short of rearranging the cards in my system, any suggestions? Does
anyone know if OS/2 Warp 4 is capable to detecting and using IRQ sharing
devices?

Regards,

Jimmy

Subj: Will Any Driver Give Me Sound For This Configuration?

From: "Jim Boyan" <jimboyan@idcomm.com>

I have a Gateway computer with the following sound card (as read to me by a
Gateway technician). Pardon all of the information as I don't know which is
relevant.

Integrated Sound on the Mother Board
Creative Labs ES1373 Chip Set
Crystal Semi Conductor CS4297
Audio Codec
Sound Blaster Audio PCI 64D Audio Controller

I have my computer partitioned for OS/2, LINUX and WIN98. I get sound from
2 out of 3 (can you guess which one I don't). I don't believe there is a
driver for OS/2, but does anyone have the above configuration and got it to
work with some other driver under OS/2? Is there a "generic" driver of
sorts that would work with most cards. Pardon my ignorance in this area -
am I doomed to silence in OS/2 land???

Just to let you know you aren't alone!

I have the FIC-503+ with an AMD K6-2 @ 350 MHz, Diamond Viper V330
(another not quite supported board), Eagle Tape Accelerate and TR3 drive,
Info Products Scanner and interface, and Atlas 33.6 modem. And of course,
the Ensoniq sound card (love the sound in Win95 - wish I could get it in
Warp).

Somewhere, we must have a driver blocking the system from finding the
board. I have full hardware detection run each time I reboot. Yet only
the sound card isn't recognized.

If you get an answer offline, be sure to post it here, too!

Subj: Aopen AW37 - DMA conflict

From: derek.vance.steel@natureboy.dyn.tj

Hello All.

I have installed an Aopen AW37 (4235 chipset) into one of the OS/2
boxes, the driver from Crystal installed fine.

Problem: During startup RM (Resource Manager?) says DMA 0 conflict.

This machine already has: SCSI 2940UW, Hauppage Win/TV, Dlink 530TX,
Matrox G100. As you can see it is quite full, as a matter of fact
there are no slots of any kind left in it.

How can I get the AW37 to use a different DMA?
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I know that when I was using an AWE32 pnp, that I could change the
dma being used by changing the config sys parameter, previously I
had to because the 2940UW was using the dma channel that the AWE32
 was using.

Is there something similiar that can be done for the Aopen AW37?

I use PMView to have a first look and maybe to little adjust the
colors and brightness.

Then I save it and open it with Embellish. With it I add some
text and arrows etc.

Perfect solution for me.
