Subj: StarBack for OS/2 - 10th Beta

From: "Peter Engels" <p.engels@gmx.de>

Hi

I have just released the 10th beta of StarBack for OS/2. This program
is a PM-Utility, which is able to backup and restore the most important
pathes of a StarOffice 5.x installation. While the program messages are
available in englisch and german, the documentation is only german at
the moment. Sorry for that. Beside some other OS/2 freeware utilities I
wrote, you can download it from :

http://www.uni-bonn.de/~uzs0ad

Please let me know your experiences!

This OS/2 system uptime is 06 hours, 36 minutes and 37 seconds.

Am very interested in this question as well, & keep on
asking people I meet who have them what they think. What
they tell me is the cheaper units will do fine unless you
add on a ton of fancy memory-eating apps. Also people I
talk to seem to think that the Handspring units will be
phenomenal once they iron out the bugs (distribution and
support are lousy) and get more plug-ins, so maybe the
wisdom is buy a cheap PP for short term. Then again I don't
know whether there's even a possibility that Handsprings
will support anything other than you know what.

It's painful for someone not experienced with networks.

Start with these sites:

Also check deja news. There's lots of stuff there, but it takes a bit

Subj: MAMERUN beta 5: Frontend for OS/2

From: stefanj@gte.net (Jason Stefanovich)

I have just uploaded beta 5 of MAMERun to Hobbes:

  http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/

Final expected placement is:

  http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/apps/emulator/

You can also find it at the MAMERun Homepage:

  http://home1.gte.net/stefanj/mamerun.htm

Whats New Beta 5:

* Changed the interface a bit to make it easier to read and fixed
some minor bugs
* Removed the tab stops from all objects except the Hotlist
* Updated the main menu and popup
* Added support for ROM and sample checking
* Fixed bug with alternate ROM dir. and duplicate names
* All ROMs in the alternate dir are now identified with the suffix
'[alt]'
* Fixed timing issues with some processes
* Added a 'Check for updates' button

What:

MAMERun is a FREEWARE PM front end for the DOS version of
MAME
(Multi. Arcade Machine Emulator). A front end is a program that
makes
it easier for the user to interface with his application, which
usually has a command line interface. MAME is a very popular
emulator
that allows you to run thousands of classic arcade games on your
PC
(if you own the ROMs). You can find the MAME homepage at:

  http://mame.retrogames.com/

The Official (and very good) OS/2 PM port of MAME was done by
Marty
Amodeo and is at:

  http://emuos2.vintagegaming.com/

Requirements:

OS/2
MAME for DOS (I used version .36 beta 12)
I STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU USE THIS VERSION SINCE THERE
IS A Y2K ISSUE WITH PRIOR VERSIONS!
DOS Support installed
RexxUtil
joystick device driver (for joystick support, download from hobbes
or DDPAK)
ROMs (DO NOT ASK ME FOR, OR WHERE TO GET ROMS!!)

Dear John,

Yes, we have a Web site but we are building a new recent one with all the
information about our projects.
We will give the URL on the newsgroups and Warpcast.
I know a lot of people want to use all kinds of organizers with OS/2.
We build a WPS connection for the Palm Pilot first and than will build the
wrappers to connect to the databases of Lotus Organizer etc. We mailed Lotus
a lot about the Organizer file setup, but they didn't respond. Now we have
some other idea's and are redesigning the functionalities.

Please be patient and you will get it.

The scrollmouse driver is supposed to support all standard
scrolling mice and has been tested on the Iogitech and IBM
mice. Try under IBM for manufacturer and scrollpoint mouse
for the device.

Subj: Sysbench FFT Source

From: Ron Vopicka <cvopicka@erols.com>

I'm trying to understand why FFT performance on the AMD K6-2 scales so
poorly. I can understand the FP performance implementation not being as
good as Intel's, but I'm trying to understand why going from 400 to 450
to 500MHz it doesn't increase about the same % with speed. Linpack and
Flops seem to but FFT has a ball and chain attached.

Trevor, is the source for the sysbench linpack (any version) available
anywhere?

I realize the problem may well be the pipelining/caching in the chip,
but I am very curious (with time on my hands even!, to satisfy my
intellectual curiousity about what the compiler is asking the chip to
do.

FWIW, at 500MHz, the FFT on a AMD K6-2 runs at about 66% of the speed of
FFT on my Celeron (that is only running at 300)!.

Depends on your chipset. The IBM driver only supports the UHCI
version which is Intel's. For a fairly good discussion on this read

Has anyone come across OPCONSOL?

It has been available on Hobbes for a number of years, and provides the
OS/2 equivalent of an MVS Operator's Console, and is quite a handy utility
in terms of telling which files are loaded and how much system resource they
have used.

The license details include this section:

You are granted a license to try this program (OPCONSOL) until it is
released as a commercial product or as Shareware, after which time
you MUST register it or discontinue its use. A Drop-Dead date will
be included in the next version of the software.

The version on Hobbes is 1.02.1. Has anyone ever come 'the *next* version' ?

AFAIK, this program was the victim of a system failure. I believe
the author posted some information stating that the source had been
lost due to a hardware failure and he was hoping to recode the program
in order to carry the project further.

I had tried to version that was posted on hobbes and was impressed by
it. I was looking forward to seeing enhancments.

I did a review of Opconsol in the Oct VOICE Newsletter -

Same version as you found on HOBBES. The author, Gary Green
contacted me and told me he had lost all his source for the 1.3
version in a drive crash and was working on re-creating it. That was
two years ago and I have not heard anything more. His email at the

what happened. Thanks for reminding me about it. I'll have to try
it out on WSeb.

I have dBase IV. $5 closeout at an Office Max 2 years ago. Learning
curve was too steep for the time I had available, so it's now
shelfware. I looked into Big Blue's database but am not wealthy. So I
stick with PCFile.

Native apps aren't always the best option. Navigator runs slow on my
machine but I use it. WordPerfect was a nightmare; I went back to using
v5.0 in a VDM. In fact, looking at my desktop, I've got a grand total
of two native OS/2 apps. Everything else is DOS ... with some Win31
trash sprinkled in for flavor.

OPCONSOL, now that's a program I've not thought about for a while... Well,
I gotta tell ya, it's been a while since I've worked on OPCONSOL; gotta pay
the mortgage you know and it's difficult paying it on money earned from some
of my past OS/2 work.

Also, I had a very severe system crash which left me with missing source
code, most of it for OPCONSOL. Anyone out there capable of recovering an
HPFS formatted drive which lost it's partition table structure when I
attempted to install NT Client software.

So, to answer your question, there has been no 'official' release of
OPCONSOL, yet. Hopefully soon (which is similar to what I said about a year
ago).

Gary,

Glad to see you are still around. Just to let you know OPCONSOL
1.02.1 runs fine on my Warp Server ebusiness SMP machine. Since I'm
not doing much mainframe programming anylonger, it is a blast to see
that operators console window on my pc.

You might be able to recover that data with Chris Graham's Utilities,
assuming you have a bootable OS/2 partition to run them from. Also
I have heard that CHKDSK /F:3 may resurrect data off an HPFS
partition, but I have never done this. You might want to contact
Chris for advise - chrisg@warpspeed.com.au

From: "Gary Green" <garygreen@home.com>

Well, I just got off the phone with someone at an old Client site and just
happened to mention OPCONSOL (they're running it on multiple systems in
production). Anyway, he said they have an old backup CD of a workstation was
using while working on-site and it may contain some/most of the source code
for the latest version on OPCONSOL.

If this turns out to be true, then I all I need do is get another drive for
my Dell Laptop so I can install OS/2 on it and I'm back in business. I'll
have plenty of time on my hands at my latest client (it's out of the area
and I'll be there all week with nothing better to do after hours).

So, does anyone out there in, the remaining, OS2 land have any additional
suggestions for improving OPCONSOL?
