Subj: New Matrox G400 problems ...

From: jthompso@iname.com

I just purchased a new Matrox G400 Max (all the goodies) and having a heck of
a time
getting it installed. I am replacing a Millenium II PCI card. I have Warp 4
fp/10 system.
I believe the problem is with my motherboard, a Abit BX6 and a Celeron 433mhz
chip. The
reason I believe this is I can't get it to work with Windows 98 (dual boot)
either. Windows
says I have just a generic PCI VGA adapter. In OS/2 it also only works with
the VGA driver.

Both the Matrox driver and the SDD drivers locks up the system with the
Desktop appears.

Maybe I got a defective card or maybe there's an issue with this motherboard.
Does anyone
have any ideas or answers?

Thanks,

Junior Thompson

Subj: Help please: Black Screen after Gengradd svga Re-Installation.

From: hotmail.com@PeterSchumacher

Hello,
I have made a silly mistake after installing the gengradd driver
for generic svga. It had worked fine for resolutions up to 1280 *
1024.
Then I tried 1600 * 1280 resolution; After rebooting the screen stayed
all black, but i could hear the system sounds of the opening desktop.
The system was up and running under a black screen.
Now i knew definitely that my monitor doesn't make it at 1600*1280.
Not a big problem i thought:
rebooted, pressed Alt+F1 and reset to vga 640*480/ 16 colors. Display
works.
then reinstalled the gengradd driver: setup GEN.
HOWEVER this gengradd re-installation seems to remember the previous
wrong setting:
the display stays black.
Is there a way to clear this memory?
I already tried resetting to vga and installing the gengradd driver
some more times and
always get a black screen in the end.
I also looked for a ini- or config- file where this false setting
might reside,
but could not find one (at least not an textual one, i cannot check
the binaries).

Does anybody know how to solve this problem?
I really appreciate any helpful tip,
Peter

Do you have the latest Matrox driver from their web site?

Mine would lock up until I used the 2.31 driver or the 2.36
driver....

SDD has a bug that will lock up G400 cards on some
machines (like mine).

There were some issues described between Abit mainboards and G400
video adapters, though they generally related to Open gl and/or D3D
gaming. Might I suggest the forums at http://www.matroxusers.com ? I
wound up getting an Asus mainboard myself. For many, the problems had
to do with their G400 not fitting properly into the AGP slot. Test
this by seating the card in the slot but without tightening the screw.

Best of luck,
Jay

I have a old 4 mb Matrox Millenium board..
what bios update and driver should I be using for the "best" response,
stability, etc with Warp v4 (and I'm at FP 10 now, should I go to 12 along

and, what site has all (or a lot of) the real NEED TO KNOW tricks and tips on
NOT screwing up the bios and driver install process..

like, do I have to use "real ms-dos", or what??

Can you point us to any document that specifies which bugs were fixed
and which instabilities have been corrected? I'm running 2.31.100,
which I installed when I got my G400, about two weeks before 2.36 came
out. I downloaded 2.36 and found that the documentation gave no
indication of what the changes were for this version.

So far, the only problem I've had with 2.31 is that WordPerfect 6.2
for DOS won't run in anything better than VGA. I don't know whether
this is a bug or a deliberate design to protect the driver from the
effects of DOS programs resetting the video mode.

Subj: 1152*868 resolution and high refresh rates for Riva128 with GENGRADD ?

From: Andreas Grosche <ten@rumms.uni-mannheim.de>

Trying to use a Riva128-based 4MB ELSA Erazor PCI board on Warp4 at FP#12 with
the GENeric GRADD080 driver, I cannot get more than 59-60Hz of refresh rate in
any resolution and color depth, neither by selecting "DCC Monitor" or one from
the list that should provide high refresh rates, nor by using a patched
MONITOR.DIF file to have appropriate settings for my Samsung SyncMaster 700p.

I have encountered this problem on both the 15-pin D-SUB VGA input (which does
support DCC and recognizes the monitor as a "DCC 2 SAM 7443") and the 5*BNC.

Some resolutions such as 1152*868 (referred to as 1152 x 870 in MONITOR.DIF)
are not even selectable in the list on Page 1, however they are being shown in
System/Settings/Screen/Page 2 of 2/View Current Configuration/Supported Modes.

The Adapter Name is properly recognized as "ELSA VICTORY Erazor" on this page.

"Supported Adapter Modes" below this field shows a list with all resolutions
and color depths but has only dashes " - " between the two apparently
empty columns to the right of these values, where most likely the ranges of
available refresh rates should be displayed for each of these lines.

Does anybody know which other files besides D:\OS2\MONITOR.DIF are used to
provide the information relevant to the resolution and refresh rate setup,
and what needs to be changed for getting appropriate OS/2 Warp performance
with this monitor's 30-85kHz horizontal/50-160Hz vertical synchronization ?

Otherwise, if this is a bug in the GRADD driver, which is the developers'
eMail address for reporting a problem (as there is no contact information
other than the download URL of http://service5.boulder.ibm.com/pspfixpk.nsf
in the package's README.TXT file) ?

Thanks in advance for your help !

My 4MB Matrox Millenium here is still using the original 2.2 BIOS that
it had when I purchased it back in December 1996, and I'm still using
the original 2.04.040 driver version that I installed under Warp 4.

It works for me, so I've not tried to "fix" it. There's no point.

My second Warp box (which normally runs Linux) has a 2.0 BIOS and the
same old drivers. It also works fine, though I'm aware of one glitch
in the video BIOS (the mouse cursor in text-based apps under DOS will
sometimes mess up and display strangly).

http://www.matroxusers.com might have some information buried within, I
dunno.

I used to boot to DOS to flash my modem -- it might be a good idea to
do that for video BIOS flash updates as well. Doing so would minimize
any timing problems caused by background processes.

><why is this so complicated?>

It's as complicated as you choose to make it. It'd be a lot worse if
you had to actually swap physical chips. :-) Just because you have
the option to flash things doesn't mean you HAVE to, however...

Hmmm, I've been running the VESA driver well enough on my end with

I think there is not much to see with the Mystique 220.

If I read the info correctly, 2.36 fixes a problem with the G100 and G200
boards where the BIOS will lose information if not regularly refreshed.
(Hmm...I wonder what happens to OS/2 users since they boot their machines
less often...)

On my Millenium I, it seems to "shut off" my video card for a second
during boot up and my monitor temporarily goes to sleep for a bit. I'm
considering reverting back to v2.31
I don't know if any other bug fixes made it into this one.

I can invoke the VESA VBE driver, but it will only let me use 640x480
resolution in graphics mode and when I go to graphics mode, I'm stuck
with a 60 Hz refresh rate (vs 85 for the Matrox drivers and 100 for
SDD beta 9). The flicker drives me crazy so I stay with text mode.
Actually, I rarely use WP 6a DOS any more, having moved over to WP7
running under WinOS/2.

Where, exactly, is this new driver? I looked at the Matrox website,
followed the links, and on the FTP site I was only able to find the
2.31 driver! I must not be in the right directory or something...

Subj: nVidia TNT/2 with video IN/OUT

From: donm@ftel.net (Don Morse)

I just purchased a Cougar TNT/2 ATP card Video Editor edition. Using the
NVidia drivers from the IBM device driver site (GRADD) the card works well. I
[sigh] resigned myself to using the video editing portion under winblows.
However, the video capture performance is dismal compared to an 4 year old,
ISA based capture card I run under Win-OS/2. I'm sure it's windblows driver
inefficiencies.

1) directly under OS/2, the OS/2 command prompt window text emulation is slow.
Is anyone aware of native drivers anywhere?

2) has anyone written or is aware of drivers that would allow me to capture
video from this card using OS/2? Also, to output video through the video out
port...

thanks in advance...

Subj: AGP vs PCI OS/2 Benchmarks?

From: zeppelin <zeppelin@gte.net>

Has anybody out there conducted any comparative testing of OS/2 video
performance for "similar" video cards (ie the same "class" and and
manufacturer) where one version was produced in an "AGP Version" while
at the same time the card was also released in a " PCI Version" ?

I am certain that you all were force fed the hype the same as I was
when AGP first launched, that at long, long, last the prayers of all
"power" users were finally going to be answered, because the extreme
data burden of the video stream was finally placed onto a data buss
designed and enhanced specifically towards that end, and that by doing
so, the entire system would get a tremendous boost, because the PCI buss
would be freed up to handle other tasks (SCSI data transfers, for
example, such as video capture to disk, etc.)

As I recall it, the tangible benefits with AGP 1 on Windows Systems
versus PCI was rather unimpressive, perhaps 5-6% better fill rates,
polygon counts, etc, with no attempt to include similar information
for OS/2 systems. And since windows is such a poor multi-tasking
environment to begin with, I'm not sure if the correspondents even
knew that it was possible to perform concurrent benchmarks that might
have demonstrated whether background tasks, (example: copying a 500 Mb
file over the PCI buss while running the fill rate tests on the AGP ,
then the PCI cards) actually are noticeably improved.

With the intensity of the SciTech beta program currently under way,
this info might be easily obtainable, and I would really like to know
if the actual concept PANNED OUT as "sizzle" or "fizzle".

Unfortunately, with AGP 4 so poorly implemented on motherboards, it's
impossible to even determine if the advances in the AGP spec have done
anything to improve upon the paltry 5% margin that AGP 1 delivered.

As an OS/2 user, why should I even care? Well with no available hardware
acceleration for OS/2, I am looking for "tweaks" that I can implement
in the assembly of my new system. And, I'm curious if this angle
presents much merit.

Thanks!!

I used to get a problem exactly like this on an older machine 6 or 7 yrs
ago. I noticed that when I turned out the lights I could see a faint
image on the screen and so pressed Print Screen. What do you know...out
of my printer came a page that showed that the machine was not hung at all
and in fact was asking me to make a decision and press a key. I did so
and away it went. Finished installing the drivers and everything came up
fine. It did it every time I installed svga drvs.

Why are you running SDD?

I've got a BX6 with a P-III 500mhz CPU, and a G400MAX. And I'm running the
Matrox drivers native, under both Warp 4 FP12 and Warp Connect FP40. No
problems on either system.

I upgraded from an original Millennium PCI card .

And I also run Win98 from Boot Manager (not Dual Boot), and the G400MAX runs
fine there too (I'm running the 1677_541 latest Power Desk and driver).

Why SDD?

Subj: Problems with "Blanker" screensaver and Matrox driver

From: pieter@world.std.com (Pieter Bras)

My system:
 Pentium 233MMX, 128MB
Matrox Millenium II PCI 8 MB (Bios 1.05)
 NEC 5FGp monitor, 1152x864x32 @ 75 Hz
 OS/2 Warp 4 FP 10
 ...

Recently I replaced my old Elsa Winner Pro/2000-X PCI video card with
the Matrox card. I experienced occasional video corruption (Solitaire,
Netscape 2.02). Once in a while the system would crash with the video
in a totally scrambled state. I originally attributed these problems to
the Matrox driver (2.31).

A couple of weeks ago I upgraded to the Matrox 2.36 driver and the
troubles became a daily occurrence. Upon searching for a cause I
discovered that disabling the "Blanker 6.0" screensaver made the
problems disappear completely.

Now it is clear that Blanker must write to the video hardware in order
to implement the DPMS monitor power-down function. But I had run it
with the ELSA card for a long time without any problems at all.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

In the readme of the SDD docs there is a oneliner that says something to the
effect

' delete the old SVGADATA.PMI'

I tried the SDD drivers and when I needed to switch back I had to go to the
command line and
delete this file before I could get my system back.

If this file is not there OS2 recreates it.

This is a definite case of YMMV.

You do have a card with more than 4Mb right? 1600 1280 is a lot of pixels.

If you do get it going could you let me know if you can get the Gengradd
drivers to go
more than 60Hz.
I am currently running 1600 1200 on a NVIDIA, and the flicker is pretty bad at
60Hz, but I cannot see
how to raise it.
Going back to Matrox as soon as I can.

Subj: Matrox G400 Drivers & BSOD

From: "Nick Danger" <nickdanger@null.spamTHIS.net>

When I first got my G400, I installed the 231 drivers. The
system would hang just as the desktop was supposed to
open. I put the Millenium II AGP back in, and it too hung
with the 231 drivers. So I backed off to 230, set the G400
aside and waited for things to settle down.

Today I tried the 236 drivers, with the Millenium II still in
there. Now instead of a hang, I get the official ("The system
is stopped") BSOD when the desktop should open. So for
now it's back to 230.

The only clue I have is that the install script leaves
a "SYS0005 Access Denied" message on the console
when it's done. But I get that installing 230 as well,
and that works.

Has anybody else seen this, and gotten around it?

From: shipbrk@gate.net (Jeff Lee)

I've been trying to install the GRADD drivers for my Matrox Millennium, in
the hopes that it would speed up OpenGL, but I get a TRAP 000D in SINGLEQ$
upon reboot when the driver is loaded.

I've tried all the suggestions I could find via DejaNews (running the
uninstall script for the previous Matrox drivers, resetting to VGA, even
changing the extensions of all the TTF files on my system), all to no
avail.

Installing the VGA GRADD drivers works. The generic SVGA GRADD drivers
work, but only at 640x480x256 (all other resolutions I tried gave me the
SINGLEQ$ trap).

Has *anyone* gotten the Matrox GRADD drivers running on a Matrox
Millennium G200 AGP? If so, are there any hints about getting it to
install? (And does it actually provide hardware acceleration for OpenGL?)

Many thanks,

Nick,

Check your G400 BIOS level. If it isn't 1.5, then upgrading it could
help.....I've seen others here for whom that has worked. The 1.5
version is on the Matrox Web site, within the package called,
BIOS_104.exe.

Good luck!

I'll try that if the G400 doesn't work. For now I'd be happy
if the Millenium II would work. For some reason, all the drivers
newer than 2.30.089 hang or crash my system, which is at FP12.

Here's the problem... In answer to your first question, no.

Although the IBM GRADD documentation fails to clearly mention this vaguely
relevant piece of information, these drivers will _not_ work with Matrox
cards later than the Millenium II. Nor, apparently, are they designed to.

To use GRADD with the MGA G100/G200/G400 cards, you need to use Scitech
Display Doctor instead.

HTH...
