Roids 2.3 README.TXT

NOTE: Please read this entire file before installing Roids,
lest you make a mistake you might regret.

I. Description

Roids is an arcade-style space demolition game for the OS/2
Presentation Manager. Fly your spaceship around blasting
Bad Guys and hapless chunks of rock into nothingness. Very
socially redeeming stuff, but hey, it's fun!

II. Installation

  A. A Note to Current Users:

DON'T DELETE THE OLD ROIDS.INI FILE! The new version will
work with the old ROIDS.INI file, although some options may
be reset due to changes in how they are stored.

  B. All Users:

Go to the source directory where INSTALL.CMD and all the other
Roids 2.3 files are located. Run INSTALL.CMD, and tell it where
you want to put Roids 2.3.

For example, if Roids 2.1b was in the C:\OS2\GAMES\ROIDS
subdirectory and you want to replace it with Roids 2.3, type:

  INSTALL C:\OS2\GAMES\ROIDS

from an OS/2 session to install the game. If the directory you
specify doesn't exist, INSTALL will create it.

III. Troubleshooting

First of all, sloppy MMPM drivers are the single most common
cause of problems with Roids. Symptoms of sloppy drivers
  include:

  A. HORRIBLE performance.
  B. Roids quits for no apparent reason.
  C. The game just sits there for a while, and the resumes.
  D. OS/2 crashes.

If you're having trouble with Roids and MMPM, try turning off
the sound effects. This will at least let you play the game
until you can get your hands on some newer sound card drivers
from the manufacturer. If you're using a Sound Blaster card,
there are some new drivers out which are fantastic. They're
available on CompuServe and the Creative Labs BBS.

Consult the on-line help for more information about MMPM
  problems.

If Roids starts behaving strangely or stops working, and MMPM
isn't the cause, there are a few things you can try:

  A. In the Options menu, select "Defaults". This resets the
      ROIDS.INI file.

  B. If that fails, delete the ROIDS.INI file. The file will
be recreated next time you run Roids.

BE CAREFUL! If your copy of Roids is registered (and I
certainly hope it is!), make sure you write down your name
and User ID EXACTLY as they appear in the Product
information dialog. Once the ROIDS.INI file has been
deleted, your registration information will be lost.
Re-enter your name and User ID in the Register dialog the
      next time you play.

  C. And if THAT fails, ROIDS.EXE is probably corrupted.
Re-install it or get another copy somehow. The latest
version is usually available on CompuServe.

If you're getting errors regarding the Help system, make sure
that ROIDS.HLP is in the Roids Working directory (see above).

See the Roids Help screens for further information.

V. Registration Nag

This game took many months and cost many hundreds of dollars
to write. If you find yourself enjoying this game, please
register it. Don't think that it's not worth registering
  because it's "just a game".

  How to register Roids

Send your name and street address (for faster response,
also send your complete E-mail address) along with a check
for $10 (U.S.) made out to Leonard Guy to:

    Leonard Guy
    3415 Bangor Pl.
    San Diego, CA
    92106-2409
    USA

    In return you'll receive:

    - A User ID number, with which you can personalize Roids
and disable the opening dialog box. This ID will also
work on all future versions of Roids, so all upgrades
      are "free".
    - Notification of new Hungry Man releases (Only if you
      include your E-Mail address).
    - A thank you note.
    - A clear conscience.
    - Assurance that Hungry Man Productions will be able to
      continue writing games.

If you live outside the United States, the best way to
register is to send a money order (in U.S. funds) or
equivalent. It really doesn't matter, as long as it can be
converted to U.S. dollars. The Postal Service frowns on
    sending cash through the mail, but I won't tell . . .
