  SECTION 1
 ͼ

  What is AdeptXbbs?
AdeptXbbs is a native OS/2 32 bit Bulletin Board
program. It is a multi-thread, multi-user PM BBS.

AdeptXBBS incorporates the best that is OS/2! AdeptXBBS
is designed to give you speed, reliability, power and
flexibility in one package. Almost everything about
AdeptXBBS can be customized. All the text displayed in
the PM system, to every prompt and menu.

What is the current version of AdeptXbbs?
The current version is 1.02 which was released on
8/11/95. This version will run in DEMO mode only if
you are an un-registered Sysop. DEMO mode means that
you can run Adept in local mode only. Versions prior
to 1.01 can be ran and tested without a registration
key. As of version 1.01, AdeptXbbs is a commercial
        product and not shareware.

How much does it cost to register AdeptXbbs?
Here is the current pricing list:

2 Node AdeptXBBS with REXX ($99)
2 Node AdeptXBBS with REXX and Internet ($159)
4 Node AdeptXBBS with REXX ($219)
4 Node AdeptXBBS with REXX and Internet ($279)
8 Node AdeptXBBS with REXX and Internet ($449)
16 Node AdeptXBBS with REXX and Internet ($699)
32 Node AdeptXBBS with REXX and Internet ($1199)

Please call if you wish to discuss orders larger
        than 32 nodes.

How much does it cost to upgrade AdeptXbbs?
Upgrading is the price difference between what you
have registered and what you would like to upgrade
to. If you have registered Adept for 2 nodes and
paid $99 and would now like to have the Internet
module, the upgrade price would be $60.

  How do I register AdeptXbbs?
You can log on to the main Adept Support BBS and
register online if you have a major credit card.
You can do this by calling or telnetting to the
        BBS.
Call 407-477-6310 or Telnet to 199.227.57.1
After you login, select the REGISTER option from
the main menu. After registering, you will be
presented with a registration number a and serial
        number.

  Where can I download AdeptXbbs?
You can find the most current version of Adept
on the main support BBS at 407-477-6310. You
can also find it at 812-342-6546.

  Where can I FTP AdeptXbbs?
For those of you with Internet Access, you can
always find the latest version of Adept by
FTPing to 199.227.57.1 and logging in as
Anonymous. Other sites that you should look at
        are:
        hobbes.nmsu.edu
        ftp.cdrom.com

  How can I contact AdeptSoft?
If you have technical questions, or bug reports
pertaining to AdeptXbbs, you may send them to:

  SECTION 2
 ͼ

How do I chat with my users?
When a user is logged into your BBS, you can
initiate a chat with them by clicking your
right mouse button on their session window
and selecting CHAT. A split screen chat
session will start. To get out of chat, do
the same thing: click your right mouse button
on the session window and select CHAT.

How do I set up news?
Create a news file with the following naming
        convention.

any_name_you_want.new.ans (or .asc, .avt or .rip)

Place this file in your \Adept\System\Sysnews
        or your \Adept\System\Miscnews directory. Then
from the pulldown menus, click on:
        CONFIG->BBS->BBS ACTION FLAGS
Add USE ANSI NEWS to the active BBS flags. Then
        click on:
        CONFIG->BBS->NEW USER DEFAULTS
Add SEES MISC NEWS and SEES SYSTEM RELATED NEWS
to the Flags to default to on users.
The news files that you create will be shown only
once to your users. If you want to show a file
to your users every time that they log in to the
BBS, create a NEWS.ANS (.asc, .avt or .rip) and
place it in your \Adept\Text directory.
The news files are displayed in the following
        order:
        \Adept\Text\News.asc
        \Adept\System\Sysnews\syst.news.asc
        \Adept\System\Miscnews\misc.news.asc

How do I include meta variables in my ANSI screens?
One of the powerful things about Adept is that you
can include meta variables in your screens that
will show up when they are displayed. There are
meta variables for user name, time left, time of
day ect... Problem is, that if you just type them
into your ANSI screen, they will be inserted and
sometimes make your screen edges jagged.

The best thing to do here is to use TheDraw (a
shareware ANSI drawing program). Draw your ANSI
screen, turn on ANIMATION mode by clicking your
right mouse button on the screen and selecting
TOGGLES->ANIMATION MODE. Then click your right
mouse button again and select ANIMATION->RESCAN->
TOP. After you've rescanned, carefully cursor to
the position you wan the meta variables to be
and type them in. Then save the screen as usual.

How do I set up doors (online games)?
With AdeptXbbs, you can run any door game that
can use the DOOR.SYS drop file. If you have a
door that must use something other than a DOOR.SYS,
you can find a drop file converter to create the
desired drop file that you need.

In order to be able to run doors with AdeptXbbs,
you need to install Ray Gwinn's SIO drivers for OS/2.
These are much better drivers than the ones that come
with originally with OS/2. The latest SIO drivers can
be found on most OS/2 BBSes and on the following FTP
        sites:
        199.227.57.1
        hobbes.nmsu.edu
        ftp.cdrom.com

After you have installed the SIO drivers, you should
have the original OS/2 drivers commented out in your
CONFIG.SYS. You also need the undocumented '-' switch
configured. This will allow you to share comports with
Adept and the door games. Here is a sample CONFIG.SYS
        snippet:

        DEVICE=C:\OS2\MDOS\ANSI.SYS
        REM DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\COM.SYS
        REM DEVICE=C:\OS2\MDOS\VCOM.SYS
REM ......... Ray Gwinn's SIO Com drivers ........
        DEVICE=C:\SIO\SIO.SYS (1, 3F8, 4,-)
        DEVICE=C:\SIO\VSIO.SYS
        DEVICE=C:\SIO\VX00.SYS

In the above example, you see that the OS/2 drivers
have been commented out and that the '-' is included.
Please refer to the documentation supplied with the
SIO drivers for more information on installing them.

After you have the SIO drivers installed, you can
set up your doors. In the next examples, we'll walk
thru setting up the popular TradeWars door. First,
obtain the door archive. The latest TradeWars door
can be found under the name: 2002V2B6.EXE
Create a separate directory for each of your doors.
Unarchive TradeWars into it's own directory and run
the install program. Configure it to your own system
specifications. Remembering to include any locked
baud info. Set this door up to look for the DOOR.SYS
        drop file.

Create the following batch file and place it in your
        \Adept directory.

        CD \doors\tw
        copy \adept\system\line%1\door.sys
        tw2002 NOEMS
        del door.sys
        CD \adept

Edit this example to reflect the path to your door
        game.

Next, create or edit your door.menu and place it in
the \Adept\Menus directory. Here is an example:

        \r,0,door.asc,Online Games,4
        ? ,51 ,,Commands.Asc,0
        - ,2 ,Return to previous menu,,0
        G ,1 ,Goodbye/Logoff,LogOff.Menu,0
        ~ ,1000,Goodbye/Logoff,LogOff.Menu,0
        1 ,801,,cmd.exe /c twar.bat {LN {H0,0
        2 ,801,,cmd.exe /c bre.bat {LN {H0,0

Using this example, you would start the TradeWars
door by pressing 1. It would then look for the
twar.bat file in your \Adept directory and if found,
        execute it.

How do I set up FIDOnet?
One of the greatest things about AdeptXbbs is that
it containes everything (almost) that you need to
run a successful FIDO node. I say 'almost' because
the only thing it does not include is a nodelist
compiler. There are 2 popular nodelist compilers
available for OS/2. Qnode and Fastlist. I recommend
        Fastlist because it is....FAST!

Here are the steps involved in setting up Adept
for FIDO. I am assuming that you know what FIDO is,
and that you already have a node number. If you do
not have a node number, contact a BBS near you that
carries FIDOnet echo mail and ask them who to contact
        to get a node number.

        1. Get a nodelist compiler. Read the documentation
included with it, and create your nodelist. Here
is an example Fastlst.cfg config file:

--------8<----- END CUT HERE -----8<---------

If you use Fastlist and this example config file, create
a Password.lst file and place it in the same directory as
your nodelist. Created it with the following format:

        password 1:231/1320.0 <password>

Substitute your password for <password> for your hub's address.

        2. Get a copy of the latest fido nodelist. Place
it in the \Adept\Mailer\Nodelist directory and
           compile it.

        3. From the pulldown menus, configure the following:
           CONFIG->ACTIVE LINE->MAILER SETTINGS
           CONFIG->ACTIVE LINE->MAILER ADDRESSES
           CONFIG->BBS->MISC. PATHS / FILES

(Make sure that you put all your addresses in
the 5D style. For Example: 1:231/1320.0@FidoNet)

	4. From the pulldown menus, EDIT->MESSAGE AREAS
Add the FIDO echo areas that you want to carry.
Check the ECHOMAIL, FORCE PUBLIC, and REQUIRES
	   REAL NAME flags.

Be sure to include your 5D address in the ADDR
	   field.

If you find it tedious to add many echos using
the message area editor, you can directly edit the
	   \Adept\System\Message_Areas file.

        5. Create an AREA.CONTROL file and place it in your
\Adept directory. Here is an example:

--------8<----- BEGIN CUT HERE -----8<---------

MAKENEWAREAS
IMPORTALLNETMAIL

ECHO GUITAR 10 1:231/1310.0@Fidonet

ECHO MUSIC_COMP_101 12 1:231/1310.0@Fidonet
ECHO TABLATURE 13 1:231/1310.0@Fidonet
ECHO MUSICIAN 14 1:231/1310.0@Fidonet
ECHO DOORWARE 15 1:231/1310.0@Fidonet
ECHO OS2BBS 16 1:231/1310.0@Fidonet
ECHO ADEPTSOFT 17 1:231/1310.0@Fidonet
ECHO ADEPT_SYSOP 18 1:231/1310.0@Fidonet
ECHO ISYSOPS 98 1:231/1310.0@Fidonet

ADDRCONTROL 1:231/1310.0@FidoNet <password> 1,ABC TYPE2+

--------8<----- END CUT HERE -----8<---------

In the above example, you would configure all your
FIDO echo areas. The numbers between the area names
and the address of your hub are the message base
numbers in Adept. If you are a hub to someone else,
and don't want to have the echos on your system,
you can set them up as PASSTHRU areas by using 0
        as the message base number.

        6. Create or edit your gatekpr.ctl file. Here is
           an example:

--------8<----- BEGIN CUT HERE -----8<---------

--------8<----- END CUT HERE -----8<---------

For more in depth info on the above example, refer to
	the ADPXBBS.DOC

	7. Create an event via the CONFIG->ACTIVE LINE->EVENTS
pulldown menu to scan/toss messages that you receive
or are ready to send. To do this, you might want to
	   use this mail.cmd example:

	Gatepm.Exe GateKpr.Ctl A LP

In the above example, the PM based GateKeeper is used
with the GateKpr.Ctl file. If you wish to use the text
version of GateKeeper, you can use GateKpr.Exe instead
of Gatepm.Exe. Run Gatekpr.exe with the /? parameter
for more info on the runtime switches.

	8. Create an event via the CONFIG->ACTIVE LINE->EVENTS
pulldown menu to poll your hub at a desired time. To
do this you might want to use this poll.cmd example:

	SET XOUTBOUND=C:\Adept\Mailer\Outbound_Mail
	SET XNODELIST=C:\Adept\Mailer\Nodelist
	GS Poll Fidonet#1:231/1310 C

In the above example, two environmental variables are
set to reflect the path to your mailer directories.
Then, GS.EXE is run with the address that you want to
poll and the FLAVOR you want the packet to be. In this
example, it will be CRASH mail.

	9. You're ready to go!

How do I set up multiple FIDO style networks?
If you have already set up your AdeptXbbs system for one
network, you won't have much trouble including another one!
Here are the steps necessary for doing so.

	1. From the pulldown menus CONFIG->ACTIVE LINE->MAILER ADDRESSES
	   add your other network addresses.

	2. Edit your nodelist compiler to reflect the addition of another
network. Here is a sample Fastlst.cfg file which is set up for
	   FIDOnet and AdeptNet:

Substitute your password for <password> for each of your
	hub's addresses.

	3. Get a current copy of the nodelist for your other network.
Put it in the \Adept\Mailer\Nodelist directory and compile
	   it.

	4. From the pulldown menus, EDIT->MESSAGE AREAS
Add the FIDO echo areas that you want to carry.
Check the ECHOMAIL, FORCE PUBLIC, and REQUIRES
	   REAL NAME flags.

Be sure to include your 5D address in the ADDR
	   field.

If you find it tedious to add many echos using
the message area editor, you can directly edit the
	   \Adept\System\Message_Areas file.

	5. Edit your Area.Control file to reflect the echos from the
other network. Here is a sample Area.Control that is set up
	   for FIDOnet and AdeptNet:

In the above example, you need to set up ALL your addresses
in the ADDRESS line. Make sure they are the 5D style. Also,
set up your routing for each of your networks.

	7. Edit your poll.cmd so that it will call all your
networks. Here is an example that is set up for FIDOnet

SET XNODELIST=C:\Adept\Mailer\Nodelist
GS Poll Fidonet#1:231/1310 C
GS Poll Adeptnet#55:50/0 C

	8. That's it! You should be all set.

How can I set up Adept so people can FREQ files from me?
First, you have to have a network address and you need to
be set up for at least one network. See above instructions.
Next, you need to create or edit your PUBLIC.OK file that
is located in the \Adept\Mailer directory. Here is an
	example:

--------8<----- BEGIN CUT HERE -----8<---------

In the above example, magic names are preceeded by a '@'
A magic name is one word that a person can use to FREQ a
specific file. If you just put in the path (like the last
two entries in the example) all files in that path will
	be available for FREQing.

This version of the now well known
BRE2AD.CMD or MSG2AD.CMD or how ever
many other converters out there will
    actually work with little modification.
All that one needs to do is put complete
the network information and then list
the nodes that need to be held rather
than being crashed. This version also
checks the .MSG file and if the file
is a BRNODES.### then the file is not
"killed". This is hub support so that
hubs can be sure that BRNODES updates
    are passed along without intervention
