	Windows/WfWG 3.1x DOS Prompt Session/Box MEMory Screens

The following 5 memory screens were obtained by running:
MEM /A /C > C:\MEM31.TXT
from a Windows for WorkGroups 3.11 DOS box/session with NO programs/TSRs
running.

I gained 2 KB of free low DOS memory by adding the:
LocalLoadhigh=1
line under my SYSTEM.INI's [386enh] section.
See "LOCALLOADHIGH" in MYTIPS31.TXT (included) for details.
NOTE: Using this parameter may lockup some systems with less than 16 KB of
free upper DOS memory BEFORE starting Windows/WfWG!

I included here my system MEMory configurations using 5 different MS-DOS mode
memory managers in Config.sys (current releases):
- Microsoft MS-DOS 6.22 EMM386.EXE v4.49 + HIMEM.SYS v3.10 "combo",
- Uwe Sieber UMBPCI.SYS v3.39a + Microsoft HIMEM.SYS v3.10,
- Network Associates (Helix) NetRoom RM386.EXE v3.04,
- Symantec (QuarterDeck) QEMM386.SYS v9.00 and
- Lineo (Caldera) DR-DOS 7.03 EMM386.EXE v3.27.
Take a look at MEM62.TXT (included) to see my native/true/real MS-DOS mode
("outside" WfWG 3.1x) MEMory configurations using all 5 memory managers
listed above.

MSD62.TXT (included) shows a list of my MS-DOS 6.22 system hardware specs,
running Microsoft Diagnostics Utility v3.01 (MSD.EXE), the MS-DOS 6.22
release, OUTSIDE Windows in native MS-DOS mode.

A MUST HAVE [I repeat: *MUST HAVE*!] for ALL MS-DOS 5.00/6.xx users:
I use DOSMAX, SHELLMAX and ENVIMAX, all part of DosMax v1.2 [82 KB, no nag
shareware]:
http://wcarchive.cdrom.com/pub/simtelnet/msdos/sysutl/dosmax21.zip
to load BUFFERS, STACKS, FILES, FCBS, LASTDRIVE, the COMMAND interpreter
and enviroment modules into Upper Memory Blocks (UMBs), thus freeing up to 90
KB of conventional DOS memory!

STRONGLY RECOMMENDED: Read MEMORY.TXT (included) for valuable guidelines and
tips to learn how to MAXimize your MS-DOS memory (conventional, upper,
extended and expanded), by loading ALL your devices/drivers/TSRs in
upper/extended memory, by placing the proper lines in your CONFIG.SYS (using
DEVICEHIGH or INSTALLHIGH) and AUTOEXEC.BAT (using LOADHIGH).

To see the devices/drivers/TSRs loaded in native MS-DOS mode at bootup time
(listed below), open my AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files (both included) with
Notepad in Windows or EDIT.COM in DOS.

Running "MEM /A /C /P" from a DOS box within Windows does NOT display Windows
protected mode drivers loaded in extended memory. You can ONLY see the
used/free/total extended memory provided by Windows memory manager.
NOTICE the reported 0 KB of free upper memory (UMA). This is normal because
Windows reserves ALL global Upper Memory Blocks (UMBs) for proper GUI
operation and expanded memory (EMS) support in DOS sessions, but ONLY AFTER
ALL real DOS mode drivers/TSRs are loaded in UMA at boot time (IF an upper
memory manager is used: EMM386.EXE, UMBPCI.SYS, QEMM, NetRoom etc) from
Config.sys and/or Autoexec.bat.
Windows modules that load automatically in UMA: API translation buffers,
application task databases etc.

NOTICE the "WIN", "win386" and second "COMMAND" modules loaded by WIN.COM when
Windows starts.
The win386 module can get VERY large sometimes, and can "gobble" a lot of your
conventional (and upper) memory under Windows/WfWG 3.xx, depending on the size
of your protected mode drivers (386, EXE, DLL, DRV, VXD etc) that load when
Windows/WfWG 3.xx starts. Win386 "memory eaters" are: Microsoft DBLSPACE
[MS-DOS 6.00] or DRVSPACE [MS-DOS 6.22], monitoring tools like: McAfee
VirusScan Shield, Helix Nuts & Bolts or Hurricane components, Quarterdeck
QEMM, WinProbe or MagnaRAM, Norton AntiVirus or Utilities etc.

These are my Win31 DOS prompt session memory screens using 5 different memory
managers, with ALL drivers/devices/TSRs loaded in upper memory (UMA), to
obtain the MAXimum possible free conventional (low) RAM available on ANY X86
IBM compatible PC clone equiped with a color VGA video controller:
