The MGI OS/2 VGA Display Driver

This diskette contains:

   README.TXT This file
   IBMVGA32.DLL OS/2 VGA driver
   IBMDEV32.DLL OS/2 VGA driver
   TRITON.EXE TRITON chipset "sniffer"

Background
----------

"TRITON" is a new INTEL PCI chipset that you may have on your Pentium PCI
motherboard.

It has been verified that on TRITON-based systems the OS/2 VGA display
driver may not work with Matrox MGA Ultima and Impression boards.

Generally, the problem will only show up if you have a sound card playing
".wav" files from OS/2.

The Matrox Drivers will NOT exhibit this problem, but since installation
of our driver is done from VGA, you will not be able to complete the
installation. To avoid this problem, you will have to either:

   - disable sound during MGA software installation,
     or
   - install the special VGA driver included in this diskette.

Since it is an easier and better fix, we recommend you install our VGA
driver.

TRITON Sniffer
--------------

If you experience hanging OS/2 on start-up with the IBM VGA driver,
you should first verify if you have a TRITON chipset. To do so:

   - reboot your system in DOS
   - insert this diskette
   - change to the diskette drive and type: TRITON

If a TRITON chip is detected, the program will say so and you will have to
take corrective action as explained above.

VGA Driver
----------

To install our VGA driver, type the following commands from DOS with the
floppy in drive A:

   CD \OS2\DLL
   REN IBMVGA32.DLL IBMVGA32.BAK
   REN IBMDEV32.DLL IBMDEV32.BAK
   COPY A:IBMVGA32.DLL
   COPY A:IBMDEV32.DLL

You can now restart OS/2.

Note: This procedure assumes that you have installed OS/2 in the default
"OS/2" directory.

This will solve the problem associated with the Triton chip set. If at a later
time, you replace your MGA card with another VGA card you can still use the
Matrox VGA driver to run OS/2 in VGA mode. If you experience any problems
however, you should reinstall the original IBM VGA driver by typing the
following commands from DOS:

   CD \OS2\DLL
   DEL IBMVGA32.DLL
   DEL IBMDEV32.DLL
   REN IBMVGA32.BAK IBMVGA32.DLL
   REN IBMDEV32.BAK IBMDEV32.DLL

If this procedure does not restore the original VGA driver properly and you
still experience problems with the other VGA card, reinstall OS/2 VGA drivers
using the IBM DSPINSTL utility.
