1. About Folder Guard Jr.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thank you for choosing Folder Guard Jr. for Windows 98/95 !
Folder Guard Jr. is a utility for Windows 98/95 that lets you hide any non-virtual folder of your choice and restrict access to the files located in that folder. When you hide a folder with Folder Guard Jr., the folder and its contents becomes invisible for Windows Explorer, Open/Save As dialogs, or any other standard Windows application, as well as for DOS programs running while Windows itself is running. For all practical purposes the folder is gone and does not exist, until you instruct Folder Guard Jr. to remove the protection. As soon as you have entered a valid password (no reboot or logoff is necessary!), the folder becomes visible and accessible again, and you can use it to open files it contains, or move other files into it. When you are all done with the files, simply run Folder Guard Jr. again to turn the protection on, and the folder you have chosen will disappear again!
While hiding the folder, Folder Guard Jr. does NOT encrypt or otherwise modify the folder or the files it contains. Folder Guard Jr. performs the protection dynamically, by intercepting requests from the programs to open files and rejecting such requests for the files located in the protected folder. The protected files remain as they are, without any modification. This means, for example, that there is no risk of losing your files because of Folder Guard Jr.: If something goes wrong, all you need to do to get back your files in the protected folder is uninstall Folder Guard Jr.
When you use Folder Guard Jr. to protect a folder, all its subfolders, if any, are protected as well. You can choose to protect a different folder (or protect no folder at all) at any time, after entering a valid password.
Folder Guard Jr. is FREE software, that may be used and distributed almost without limitations, provided it is not modified in any way. For more information, please refer to the file License.txt.
Folder Guard Jr. is advertiser-supported software: while performing the protection of a folder, Folder Guard Jr. shows small commercial messages in a separate window.  If you click on the message and your computer is currently connected to the Internet, your default web browser is opened to view the sponsor's web site. Please visit our sponsors: they make it possible to offer this software FREE!
Please do not confuse Folder Guard Jr. with its "big brother" Folder Guard ! The latter is a full-featured security application, that does not show any advertisements. It is not free, though, and must be paid for for continued use. Please visit our web site, http://www.winability.com/, for more information and to download a free, full-featured evaluation version of Folder Guard.
2. System requirements
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Folder Guard Jr. is designed for the operating system Windows 95/98. It will NOT install or work under Windows NT. At least 1 MB (one megabyte) of free space on your hard disk is required to install Folder Guard Jr.

3. Installing and uninstalling Folder Guard Jr.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Folder Guard Jr. comes with an automatic Setup utility, that allows you to both install and uninstall Folder Guard Jr.
To install Folder Guard Jr.:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

- If you have obtained Folder Guard Jr. as a compressed file, uncompress it into a temporary folder on a hard disk, or on a floppy diskette, and then run Setup.exe to begin the installation. If you have obtained Folder Guard Jr. as a self-extracting executable file, simply run it to begin the installation.

Note: If you have a previous version of Folder Guard Jr. already installed on your computer, you will be prompted for its password to continue the installation. Setup may also prompt you to restart Windows before the installation can be continued.

- The installation program will walk you through the process of setting up Folder Guard Jr. It will prompt you to specify the folder where to copy the files and other installation options.

- After you press the Finish button, the installation program will copy the files into the specified folder and configure Windows for using Folder Guard Jr.

- After the installation is complete, you may delete the files from the temporary folder (where you ran Setup.exe). If you ran a self-extracting executable file to begin the installation, this step is not necessary.

Note: At this point Folder Guard Jr., although installed, in no way affects the operation of your computer. That is, all folders can be freely accessed, as before, and no other restrictions are imposed on the use of the computer. To protect a folder, you must run Folder Guard Jr. (file FGJr.exe).

Information on using Folder Guard Jr. is provided in the Help file.

If anything goes wrong...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you encounter system errors while using Folder Guard Jr., it could be because Folder Guard Jr. is incompatible with some hardware or software already installed on your computer. In such a case simply uninstall Folder Guard Jr. (using the Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs command of Windows 95/98).
If the error prevents Windows from booting up, try to reboot Windows 95/98 in the "safe" mode. (To reboot in the "safe mode": If you use Windows 95, reboot the computer and press F8 when the text "Starting Windows 95..." appears on the screen. If you use Windows 98, reboot the computer and keep the Ctrl key depressed until the Start menu appears on  the screen. Then choose "safe mode" from the menu). After Windows 95/98 loads in the "safe" mode, run Folder Guard Jr. and turn off the protection or even completely uninstall the software. This should make Windows bootable again.
Alternatively, reboot Windows in the "command prompt only" mode or from a bootable floppy disk.  When the command prompt appears, change directory to the folder in which you have installed Folder Guard Jr. and rename FGJr.VxD to some other name, for example, FG.VxD.  Then try to reboot Windows as usually, ignoring the message about a missing FGJR.VXD driver. After Windows 95/98 is ready to use, you may wish to uninstall Folder Guard Jr.
To uninstall Folder Guard Jr.:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Note: To completely uninstall Folder Guard Jr., you CANNOT simply delete its program files. You must use the Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs command of Windows to completely uninstall Folder Guard Jr. and clean up your system.

Make sure you remember the password you have selected to protect Folder Guard Jr.! You will need this password to uninstall the software. You may also be prompted to restart Windows before the uninstallation can be continued.
