 Dear Friend,

Thankyou for requesting a copy of the ALCHNEWS Spectrum disk magazine.
AlchNews is NOT a public domain program, nor shareware. It is a low price,
fully copyrighted program. It may not be re-distributed or re-sold by any
commercial or hobby group or software library without permission. If any
group would like distribution permission, please write to the above address.

Run AlchNews by starting your emulator as normal, by typing Z80. Press F7 and
then press D to change the directory to where the AlchNews files are. This
will primarily be A:\ANx (where x is the issue number).

Then, press ESCAPE and use TAPE LOADER if you are in 128k mode to load
AlchNews automatically. If you are emulating the 48k, type LOAD"". You will
not get to hear the 128k music if you are in 48k mode.

When AlchNews has loaded, use cursor keys to move through the pages, I & P
to control screen colours, and SPACE to load other parts.

AlchNews works by loading each section seperately. You will find the index
in section 0, which appears when loaded. The parts are then numbered, which
you can access sequentially by pressing N or P, or by pressing C and typing
the number of the section you wish to view.

If you find loading slow, it is STRONGLY recommended that you copy the files
to a directory on your hard drive. I find the best way is to create a new
directory called ALCHNEWS, and then a sub-directory called AN20. Then,
should you get any other issues of AlchNews, you can copy them to a new
directory for that issue (ie: AN16 for issue 16). The filenames used for the
AlchNews sections are very familliar to each other and is most advisable to
keep the issues separate. If this is the case, when you press F7 to select
location of TAP files, type C:\ALCHNEWS\AN19 for issue 19. You may have to
modify the Z80.INI file to direct the TAP files to this directory.

The file format type used for AlchNews on the PC is called a ".TAP" file.
This system emulates the Spectrum tape system, but files directly to PC
disk. To find more details about the file, such as the filename, file type,
start address and lengths, load the program HEADREAD by typing the command:
LOAD "HEADREAD" from Spectrum Basic. It will proceed to show the details of
all TAP files in the current selected directory (from F7). More details
about this file type can be found in the Z80 help document (Z80.DOC), which
is in the PKZIPped file Z80-303.ZIP, which contains the emulator and other
files. PKUNZIP this to directory Z80 if you plan to use it often.

If you find the emulation too fast, you can partly slow it down by pressing
F4 then H. More details on the emulator are given in the Z80.DOC textfile.
If you find emulation too slow, you can make modifications to the
configuration file A:\Z80.INI. If you change the configuration to NOT
emulate a Spectrum 128k machine you will find it runs faster, but will lose
any 128k sound, as used in AlchNews. You may find that you need to alter the
INI file to allow the emulator to work on slower PC's.

If AlchNews has whet your appetite for more Spectrum material, all back
issues are available on one disk, as compressed ZIP files. Like this disk,
it is free if you send blank HD disk and SAE, or 1 if you wish us to supply
the media, which comes with a lifetime guarantee and is virus free. Users
with DD drives only should sent a DD disk, but will find the files have been
 zipped with PKZIP.

Should you get this disk from any other source, it's reliability cannot be
guaranteed. Full details of this disclaimer and other Alchemist Research
guarantees and conditions can be found in the CREDITS section, at the very
 end of the magazine.

Also available is an AUTHORISED collection of Gremlin Graphics games. Our
Spectrum software library ALCHEMIST SOFTWARE has thousands of Z80 compatible
games, utilities, and software to cater for all tastes.

 Best Wishes,

 Andy Davis, Alchemist Research Group.
