                          Windows 3.x PostScript Driver

 Overview

This file is divided into four main sections:

   - Introduction to the QMS PostScript driver
   - Installing the QMS Postscript driver
   - Printer notes
   - Application notes

 Introduction

The PS Executive Series Utilities include a new QMS PostScript driver for
Windows 3.0 and 3.1. This driver replaces and expands the capabilities of
the Microsoft PostScript driver that ships with Windows. It adds support
for the QMS Crown printers, many earlier QMS printers, and new QMS printers
 as they are released.

 QMS PostScript Driver Installation

The QMS PostScript Driver installs in two different ways, depending on
whether you are using Windows 3.0 or 3.1.

NOTE: For the most current instructions for the QMS PostScript driver
for Windows, check for a README.TXT file on the Windows driver disk
that you received with the PS Executive Series Utilities.

   Installing the Windows 3.0 Driver
The installation procedure replaces any driver file of the same
name with the QMS PSCRIPT.DRV driver file. To save any existing
PSCRIPT.DRV file, you must either rename the file or copy it into
a new directory prior to installing the QMS driver.

To determine if a PSCRIPT.DRV file is currently in use, choose
Printers from the Windows Control Panel, and then look at the
Installed Printers window. If the PSCRIPT.DRV file is in use, it
is listed as PostScript Printer on xxxx (xxxx represents the
     printer port: LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, COM1,COM2, COM3, COM4, FILE, EPT,
     LPT1.OS2, LPT2.OS2, or OUTPUT.PRN).

Install the QMS driver, PSCRIPT.DRV, using the following
     procedure:

     1. Turn on your computer and start Windows.

     2. In the Main window of the Program Manager window, double-click
        the Control Panel icon.

     3. In the Control Panel window, double-click the Printers icon.

     4. Remove all existing PostScript printers using the following
        procedure:

         a. Click PostScript Printer or PostScript (QMS) in the Installed
            Printers list.

         b. Click Configure.

         c. Click Remove.

         d. Click Yes.

         e. Repeat steps a through d until all PostScript printers are
            removed.

     5. Click Add Printer>>, scroll to the bottom of the List of
        Printers, and select Unlisted Printer.

     6. Click Install.

     7. Insert either the 5.25" or the 3.5" QMS driver disk into drive A
(or another floppy drive). Double-click [-a-] in the Directories
box to select the disk where the driver is located.

selection. See the "Selecting Paper Source" later in this file
        for details.

Other available selections are paper orientation, scaling, number
of copies, and duplex mode (when supported by the selected
        printer).

For multiple-resolution printers, click Options... to set the
current resolution. In the Options dialog box, select the desired
resolution from the Resolution list. Click OK to return to the
        Setup dialog box.

To determine how TrueType fonts are printed, click Options... in
the Setup dialog box and then click Advanced in the Options dialog
box. In the Advanced Options dialog box, editing the substitution
table allows you to substitute a printer font for each TrueType
font or download TrueType fonts as Type 1 or Type 3 soft fonts.
See the "Printing TrueType Fonts" later in this file for
details. Click OK twice to return to the Setup dialog box.
After setting up the printer, verify the correct driver version
(the version appears on the QMS driver disk label). To do this,

        ports.

    13. Click Close to exit the Printers dialog box.

    14. Exit Windows in the normal fashion.

 Printer Notes

Be sure to check for a README.TXT file on the Windows driver disk for
any update notes on how the driver works with your QMS printer.

   QMS IS X320T (ImageServer X320T)
When you use the QMS Windows PostScript Printer Driver, you must
use the default language for the ImageServer X320T printer.

When you select either A3 or B4 paper sizes from the driver, the
printer uses the default size letter. The driver issues the
commands a3tray and b4tray to select these paper sizes. These
commands are not supported on version 6.0T Rev.A of the printer,
and it defaults to letter paper size. To get either A3 or B4
paper sizes, you must spool the output and change the commands
     a3tray and b4tray to a3 and b4 respectively.

When the driver is used to select a specific paper tray, and a
specific paper size and the specified tray does not, in fact,
contain the specified paper size, the printer's message window
     displays this message:

Engine Not Ready; Waiting For Paper Size x.

To avoid this situation select Match Papersize as the paper
source in the driver or make sure the appropriate paper size is
     in the appropriate paper tray.

 Application Notes

Be sure to check for a README.TXT file on the Windows driver disk
for any update notes on how applications work with your QMS printers.
This section includes information on Ventura Publisher and Micrografx
 Designer.

   Ventura Publisher
The driver name needs to be the same as the released Microsoft
PSCRIPT.DRV driver. Ventura Publisher determines whether the
printer is a PostScript device by looking at the name. Therefore,
you are able to use only the QMS or the Microsoft driver.

   Micrografx Designer
Certain Micrografx Designer files do not print properly with both
the QMS PostScript driver and the Microsoft PostScript driver. If
you encounter problems, use the Micrografx driver supplied with
     Designer.

   Selecting the Paper Source
When selecting your paper source, take into consideration tray
chaining, selecting by paper size, and selecting by tray.

   Tray Chaining
Tray chaining, when enabled (on), allows the printer to automatically
switch paper trays when the current tray runs out of paper. When
chaining is enabled, the printer assumes that any tray is an
acceptable substitute for the other trays.

Tray chaining must be disabled (off) to select a particular paper
tray through your software. The printer ignores paper tray selection
commands from applications when tray chaining is enabled.

Disable tray chaining from the printer control panel, if your
     printer has one.

  Selecting by Paper Size
The current paper source may be set to match the selected paper
size. To use an available paper size, in the Printer Setup dialog
box, select Match Papersize from the Paper Source list. Next,
select the desired size from the Paper Size list. This sets the
printer to use paper from any tray containing this paper size.

  Selecting Paper by Tray
The current paper source may be set to any available paper tray.
To select a particular tray, in the Printer Setup dialog box,
select the desired paper tray from the Paper Source list (do not
select Match Papersize). Next, select the paper size contained in
the selected tray from the Paper Size list. This sets the printer
to use paper from the selected tray.

  Printing TrueType Fonts
For each TrueType font you are using, you may choose to substitute
a printer font for the TrueType font or download the TrueType font
to the printer as a Type 1 or Type 3 soft font. Substituting a
printer font for a TrueType font is appropriate for TrueType fonts
like Courier New, which is almost identical to the Courier printer
font. Font substitution generally provides faster printing than font
downloading. TrueType fonts can be downloaded to the printer as
Type 1 or Type 3 soft fonts. Type 1 fonts are outline fonts which
require less data than Type 3 bitmap fonts. Type 1 fonts generally
print faster than Type 3 fonts.

To determine how TrueType fonts are printed, use the following
     procedure:

     1. Click Options... in the Printer Setup dialog box.

     2. Click Advanced... in the Options dialog box.

     3. In the Advanced Options dialog box, remove the X from the Use
Printer Fonts for all TrueType Fonts box.

     4. Select the Use Substitution Table box. (An X appears.)

     5. Select Adobe Type 1 from the Send to Printer As list to use
outline fonts during downloading or select Bitmap (Type 3) to use
        bitmaps.

     6. Click Edit Substitution Table.

     7. For each TrueType font in the For TrueType Font list, click the
TrueType font, and then click the printer font to be substituted
in the Use Printer Font list.

If you prefer to download the selected TrueType font, click
Download as Soft Font in the Use Printer Font list.

     8. Click OK twice to return to the Printer Setup dialog box.

   WPD Files
The Windows driver disk contains WPD (Windows Printer Description)
files for QMS printers and other PostScript printers. Most available
PostScript drivers for Windows were based on the original Microsoft
driver, which provided the capability to add support for additional
printers by installing WPD files. The QMS WPD files work with most
Windows 3.0 and 3.1 PostScript drivers.

WPD files for QMS printers are included in the \WPDS\QMS subdirectory
so that support for a QMS printer can be added to most Windows
PostScript drivers. This might be helpful if you are required to use
some other driver instead of the QMS driver which already supports
     all QMS printers.

WPD files for non-QMS printers are included in the \WPDS\OTHERS
subdirectory so that support for a non-QMS printer can be added to
the QMS driver, which supports only QMS printers. This might be
helpful if you need to print to both a QMS and non-QMS printer.
View or print the README.TXT file in the \WPDS\QMS or \WPDS\OTHERS
subdirectory for complete WPD installation and removal instructions.
