   Manual TIGA Setup
   -----------------

Take note if you choose to setup TIGA by manually updating
your AUTOEXEC.BAT file as described on page seven of the
Hercules SUPERSTATION XP Installation Guide. In the TIGA
SET statement, "-l" represents a minus sign followed by
the lower case letter "L", not the numeral one.

   SUPERSTATION XP 0MB DRAM Configurations
   ---------------------------------------

   SUPERSTATION XP (Model XP6x0, where "x" is 1, 2 or 4) is
supported with seven "legal" bitmap size and on-screen color
choices, regardless of VRAM population. Please note that you
may be offered a bitmap choice where the screen resolution is
smaller than the bitmap size. Hercules refers to these
bitmaps as "BigMaps" (i.e. big bitmaps). Only select a
screen resolution coupled with a bitmap size that matches
one of the legal formats. The following bitmap formats are
   permitted:

        1280 x 1024, 16 colors
        1152 x 900, 16 colors
        1024 x 768, 16 colors
        800 x 600, 16 or 256 colors
        640 x 480, 16 or 256 colors

STATION.EXE will present more bitmap sizes than indicated
above. Selecting an invalid bitmap size will suspend system
operation when attempting to run a TIGA application
   (e.g. Windows).

   Display Mode Configurations
   ---------------------------

SUPERSTATION XP is shipped with display modes supporting a
wide spectrum of monitors -- from international television
standards to very high frequency resolutions. As described
in the Installation Guide, you are prompted to identify your
monitor's operating capacity by selecting its maximum
horizontal scan rate. Please review the following
instructions to properly select the scan rate that matches
your monitor and SUPERSTATION XP display features.

   > Most scan rate classes are presented in three ways in
STATION.EXE: "RGB only", "RGB and NTSC Video" and "RGB
and PAL Video". Select a video capable scan rate class
only if your SUPERSTATION XP is equipped with the Digital
     Video Encoder option (see below).

   > If your SUPERSTATION XP is equipped with a Digital Video
Encoder, you must first select the 24 bit-per-pixel
option in the submenu following the scan rate selection
described in the previous step. You will then be offered
a choice of screen resolutions, among which you may
choose one of the following four standard video formats:

        768 x 576 (PAL only)
        720 x 540 (PAL only)
        640 x 482 (NTSC only)
        576 x 432 (NTSC only)

   > If your SUPERSTATION XP is equipped with a Digital Video
Encoder and you want to run Autodesk Animator Pro in an
NTSC or PAL mode, you must select the scan rate class
specifying Animator Pro. Do not operate this mode when
running other applications as the display colors will
be incorrect. To run Animator on an RGB monitor, select
an "RGB only" scan rate class.

   Bit-per Pixel Color Depth Selection
   -----------------------------------

The following describes the undocumented bit-per-pixel
selection step in the STATION.EXE "Select Resolution"
procedure. After making your "Monitor Scan Rate
Selection", you will want to select an operating
resolution. Under the STATION.EXE main menu, enter the
"Select Resolution" submenu. You then will be presented
with four bit-per-pixel depths, as follows:

         4 (16 colors)
         8 (256 colors)
        15 (32,768 colors)
        24 (16.7 million colors)

After selecting a bit-per-pixel depth, you then will be
presented with a range of Bitmap Size and Screen
Resolution choices, as documented in the SUPERSTATION
XP Installation Guide. Please note that when operating
in NTSC or PAL video modes you must select the 24 bit-
   per-pixel color depth.

   Usage Notes: Configuring Your Monitor
   --------------------------------------

   > Before using application software on your
SUPERSTATION XP, it is highly recommended that you
run STATION.EXE, select your preferred resolutions
and tune those resolutions to your specific
monitor using the Hercules MoniTrac monitor tuning
utility. This will ensure that when you launch
the software for the first time, it will be
     properly displayed on your monitor.

   > Every time you select a new Monitor Scan Rate in
STATION.EXE, you must re-run Windows Setup or Autodesk
application's display driver configuration setup in
order to initialize the new SUPERSTATION XP display
mode. Run MoniTrac to tune selected resolutions in
the new monitor scan rate class.

   > After tuning a particular monitor scan rate mode in
MoniTrac, you may archive it for later retrieval under
a name other than TIGA.CFG. You must specify the
...\MODES subdirectory when saving .CFG files as
MoniTrac will search that directory to retrieve
pre-tuned mode files. The ...\MODES subdirectory is
contained in the default \TIGA directory where you
installed the SUPERSTATION XP operating software.
To save your pre-tuned settings under a different
file name, simply select "Save Setting", back space
over the TIGA.CFG file name and type in an eight
character name of your choice (i.e. 78KNTSC).
MoniTrac will automatically add the .CFG file
     extension.

To retrieve pre-tuned mode files, start up STATION.EXE
and select the "Pre-Tuned Monitor Settings" choice in
the main menu. All pre-tuned mode files saved in the
...\MODES subdirectory will be listed for your
     retrieval.

   Usage Notes: Dual Monitor Configuration
   ----------------------------------------

   > Monochrome Display Card:

If you are using the SUPERSTATION XP in a dual-
monitor setup with a monochrome display adapter,
you SHOULD NOT select the dual monitor option in
STATION.EXE -- this applies only to systems using
a SUPERSTATION XP and a VGA card.

If you are using a memory manager such as QEMM or
EMM386, you should exclude the A000-AFFF memory
range. Please consult the documentation on your
memory manager for instructions on how to exclude
     memory ranges.

   > VGA Card:

The SUPERSTATION XP is a memory-mapped card. By
default, it uses a 64KB memory segment (called a
"page") starting at address A000. This is the same
memory range (A000-AFFF) used by VGA cards. When you
are running an application that uses just the
SUPERSTATION XP for display (e.g., Windows or
AutoCAD in single screen mode), there is no conflict.
However, when you run an application in dual screen
mode (e.g., MicroStation or AutoCAD), you must
reconfigure the SUPERSTATION XP to avoid this memory
     area.

There are two ways to do accomplish this: (1) switch
the memory segment used by the SUPERSTATION XP to
another 64KB page; or (2) use the "compatibility"
mode for TIGACD. Because the compatibility mode for
TIGACD may slow down the performance of the
SUPERSTATION XP, it is recommended that you first
try to relocate the memory page used by the
     SUPERSTATION XP.

   > Relocating the Memory Page:

There are two ways to relocate the memory page used
     by the SUPERSTATION XP:

     1. Select dual monitor operation from the STATION
main menu. This will switch the starting address
for the memory page to E000. You must be sure that
no other adapter or software is using this memory
        area.

     2. Use MEMSEG.EXE, supplied on this disk, to switch
the starting address. Valid starting addresses are
A000, C000, D000 and E000. For example, if you want
to use the D000-DFFF page, you would type the
        following at the DOS prompt:

               MEMSEG D000 [Enter]

As with the first method, you must ensure that no
other adapter of software is using this memory
        segment.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are using a memory manager,
such as QEMM or EMM386, you should exclude the
segment used by the SUPERSTATION XP. Please refer
to the documentation on your memory manager for
        detail on excluding memory segments.

   > Using the Compatiblity Mode:

In order to use the compatiblity mode, you must load
TIGACD.EXE using the "-c" option. If you are loading
TIGACD manually, you would type the following command
     at the DOS prompt:

              TIGACD -C [Enter]

If you are loading TIGACD in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file
(or another batch file), you should edit the file and
add the "-c" option to the TIGACD command. For
example, if your batch file currently looks like this:

              C:\TIGA\TIGACD

You would change it to look like this:

              C:\TIGA\TIGACD -C

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you decide to use this method, you
must change all of the files that load TIGACD. This
includes the STATION.BAT file included with this disk.
If you do not change all of the files, you may find
     yourself getting inconsistent errors.

   Windows 3.1 Known Limitations
   -----------------------------

   > 15 Icons per Program Group: Only 15 color icons are allowed
to occupy a Program Group at a time in 24-bit color mode. If
you put more than 15 icons in a group, you will get the
message "Extremely Low on Memory...to convert black icons
use file\menu\property", regardless of the amount of
     available memory you have installed.

   > DOS applications in a window: If you use QuarterDeck's
QEMM 6.0 memory manager, loading TIGACD.EXE into High
Memory permits DOS applications to run in full screen
     mode only.

   > Running TIGA Programs: Exit Windows prior to running
STATION.EXE, MONITRAC.EXE or other TIGA programs.

   > Do not run TIGACD.EXE from within the DOS shell.

   > Windows Paintbrush: Unable to print .BMP files in
     15- or 24-bit color modes.

   > Aldus Persuasion 2.1: Two known problems are "Hairline"
option in Lines menu does not produce line and Slide
Sorter screen is inaccurate in 24-bit color mode.

   > Animator Pro Player for Windows does not display
accurately in 15- or 24-bit color modes.

   > Word for Windows 2.0 does not print properly with
images imported from clipboard. This will be fixed in the
     next release of Windows software.

Installing the Hercules Utilities Program Group in Windows
   ----------------------------------------------------------

The Hercules program group in Windows includes a display
setting utility called "Picture Window" and the latest
release notes for your SUPERSTATION XP. To automatically
   install the Hercules program group:

   1. Make sure that you have installed your SUPERSTATION
XP operating software (e.g. TIGA) and Windows display
      drivers.

   2. Start Windows by typing: WIN [Enter]

   3. On the pull down menu bar in Program Manager,
select "File" and choose the "Run..." option.

   4. When the "Run" dialog box appears, locate the Command
Line and enter the path designation where you
installed your SUPERSTATION XP operating software
followed by the filename WINSTALL. For example, if
you installed your SUPERSTATION XP operating software
on drive C: in a directory called \TIGA, type:
      C:\TIGA\WINSTALL. Click on OK.

   Picture Window
   --------------

   > "Enable High Performance BitBlts" option (with 15- and
24-bit display drivers only): BitBlt operations transfer
bitmapped data to and around the screen. If high
performance BitBlt is enabled, the Hercules display
driver for Windows will disable cursor management during
BitBlt operations. This will speed up BitBlt operations
by as much as 20%, but will give the appearance of a
flickering cursor. To enable, check on the "Enable High
Performance BitBlts" box if it is an available option
(i.e. not grayed out in dialog box).

   Windows 3.1 Driver Updates
   --------------------------

Hercules continues to make improvements to the Windows 3.1
true color display driver. Please be sure to register as
a SUPERSTATION XP user so that we may keep you informed of
future software updates available by carrier or on the
   Hercules BBS.

   additional release notes.

   Upgrading DRAM Memory
   ---------------------

Hercules SUPERSTATION XP may be populated to a maximum of
16 megabytes of SIMM DRAM. Hercules offers three DRAM
   expansion options:

        *  4MB DRAM SIMM Module   (Hercules Model # MU1S+4)
        *  8MB DRAM SIMM Module   (Hercules Model # MU1S+8)
        *  16MB DRAM SIMM Module  (Hercules Model # MU1S+16)

For information on how to order or install DRAM, contact
the Hercules Sales or Technical Support Group.

   Upgrading VRAM Memory
   ---------------------

Hercules SUPERSTATION XP models are available with either
1MB, 2MB or 4MB VRAM configurations. If you currently
have a 1MB or 2MB VRAM model of SUPERSTATION XP and would
like to increase the amount of VRAM, Hercules offers two
   upgrade expansion kits:

        *  1MB VRAM: Upgrades 1MB configuration to 2MB
           (Hercules Model # MV8C+1)

        *  2MB VRAM Module: Upgrades 2MB configuration to 4MB
           (Hercules Model # MV1M+2)

Whenever upgrading VRAM, you must run STATION.EXE in order
to initialize the new memory population, as well as
re-select a monitor scan rate mode and operating
   resolution.

For information on how to order or install VRAM, contact
the Hercules Sales or Technical Support Group.

   Digital Video Encoder Option
   ----------------------------

All SUPERSTATION XP models contain an expansion socket
for recordable NTSC and PAL digital video output. To
utilize this feature, the expansion socket must contain
the Hercules Digital Video Encoder. This encoder is
available either factory installed or as a user upgrade
option with the Hercules Digital Video Encoder Expansion
   Kit (Hercules Model # DVE-K).

For information on how to order or install the Hercules
Digital Video Encoder Expansion Kit, contact the
Hercules Sales or Technical Support Group.

   Updating TIGA Operating Software
   --------------------------------

If you are updating your TIGA operating software with a
new release, it is recommended that you delete the
previous \TIGA and \TIGA\MODES directories (or the
directories where you installed the previous TIGA
operating software). Re-install the new release
utilizing the INSTALL.BAT command on the Installation
Diskette. If you specify the same directory name for the
location of the new release software (i.e. TIGA), then
you do not need to update your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. If you
specify a different directory name, then you will need to
remove the previous TIGA statements in your AUTOEXEC.BAT
and let the new installation update your AUTOEXEC.BAT
with the new directory name. After installation, re-tune
your updated display formats with the MoniTrac display
tuning utility. If you are running Windows, you will need
to run Windows Setup to implement the new versions of the
   TIGA display formats.
