Sound Blaster 16 Drivers for Windows NT 3.51
             --------------------------------------------

A Note About PnP Under Windows NT
---------------------------------

Windows NT(tm) 3.51 does not include native support for PnP hardware.
Though there is a built in system of hardware resource usage
monitoring, the OS does not have logic to initlaize PnP hardware and
configure them resolving possible resource conflicts.

So to make PnP boards work under Windows NT, either the driver
developer has to include the PnP initialization logic in the driver or
the users have to use a system with PnP BIOS where the BIOS would
initialize all the PnP hardware in the system before the operating
system is loaded. Even then the driver has no way of knowing the
setup the BIOS configured the hardware with.

What These Drivers Do
---------------------

These Sound Blaster(tm) 16 drivers, upon startup would initialize the
PnP Sound Blaster hardware in the system. Once initialized the card
can be programmed like a normal card. The initialization itself is
done only if necessary.

That is, on systems with PnP BIOS, the BIOS would configure all the
PnP hardware in the system. In this case the driver would just use
these settings and program the card.

On legacy systems, that do not have PnP BIOS, the driver would go on
to initialize the PnP hardware and choose the best possible hardware
configuration.

More information on this is given in Step 9 under Installation
Instructions where the "Sound Blaster 16 Configuration" dialog box is
discussed.

Installation Instructions
-------------------------

These drivers can be installed through the WindowsNT Control Panel
application.

To install, follow the directions below

  1) Copy the contents of this package to a diskette or a directory in
     your hard disk

  2) Start Control Panel

  3) Activate Drivers application in the Control Panel

  4) Choose the "Add..." button

  5) Selcted "Unlisted or Updated Driver" from the "List of Drivers"
     listbox and choose "OK"

  6) The program asks you to insert the disk with the driver files.
If you copied the package to a diskette, put the diskette and
enter the appropriate drive letter in the entry field provided.

Alternatively, if you copied the pacakge contents to a temporary
directory in your hard disk, enter the full path name of the
directory in the entry field. (You can activate the directory
browser by choosing the "Browse..." button from where you can
select the temporary directory using the familiar File Open
     dialog box)

  7) Choose "OK"

  8) You will get another dialog box with
"Creative Tech. Sound Blaster 16" entry in a list box. Choose
     the "OK" button to install.

The drivers would be copied to the appropriate Windows NT
     directory.

If you already have Sound Blaster 16 drivers installed, you have
to unistall them before you can install the new drivers. For
instructions on uninstalling the drivers, turn to next section.

If the Sound Blaster driver files are already present in your
system, you wil get another dialog prompting you that the driver
exists and asking you whether you want to use the existing
drivers or the new drivers. Choose the "New" button to replace
the existing drivers with the new drivers in the package.

  9) Once the drivers are copied, the "Sound Blaster 16 Configuration"
dialog box is displayed. Thisis for you to input the hardware
settings like interrupt and DMA. Choose the appropriate IRQ, DMA
and I/O address values and press "OK" to complete installation.

If you are using a PnP Sound Blaster 16 card, the
"Auto-Configuration" control would be enabled. This would be
disabled for non-PnP SB16 cards. Auto-Configuration has two
     values, Enable and Disable.

If you want the driver to automatically select the best possible
hardware configuration, set this to Enable. The driver would
initialize the SB hardware and configure it with the best
     possible configuration.

If you want to configure the hardware yourself(even PnP SB16
boards) set this to Disable. The driver would initialize the
board with the settings specified in the Configuration dialog
     box.

 10) Restart the system after the drivers are installed.

Uninstalling The Drivers
-------------------------

  1) Activate Control Panel. Double click on the Drivers application.

  2) Choose "Creative Tech. Sound Blaster 16" from "Installed
Drivers" and select the "Remove" button.

  3) You will be prompted for confirmation. Answer "Yes" and the
     drivers would be removed.

Though the drivers are removed from the list, the physical driver
files remain in the hard disk. These files are not deleted. If
you want to delete them you will have to do it manually.
