THE PAWN
(c) 1985, 1986 Magnetic Scrolls Ltd.

Background
----------
Set in the mythical world of Kerovnia, this amusing and complex tale is subtle
enough to appeal to the beginner and hardened adventurer alike. A revolutionary
text handling system allows input of complicated sentences and complete
interaction with characters (including some very intelligent animals!). The Pawn
represents all its characters and objects as if they existed in a real world,
storing complex information about their attributes and properties linked to
their particular position or context in the game.

Your objectives are manifold: The simplest is to escape from Kerovnia, but you
will find others as you wander about the land and communicate with the
characters you meet. The Pawn combines a rich text adventure, with stunning
colour graphics, and a language parser that will set the standards for years to
come.

Essential Information
---------------------
Insert PAWN1.DSK and type RUN"PAWN" to load The Pawn.

Use SAVE to save your current game, and RESTORE to load a saved game. Use the
cursor keys to move the picture up and down the screen to allow you to see more
of the text, and F8 and F9 to change the colour of the text. Use GRAPHICS to
turn the graphics on and off.

After 100 turns, or after restoring a saved game, you will be asked to enter a
word from the book, "A Tale of Kerovnia". You have three chances to answer
correctly; if you fail, you will not be allowed to continue playing the game and
must reset. The text of "A Tale of Kerovnia", which provides a background story
to the game, is included in the ZIP file. I have laid it out correctly using the
PDF version of the book (which is not quite properly formatted - the pages are
too long) and a list of passwords obtained from the Internet. Note that the page
number appears at the bottom of each page, not the top. I also cannot guarantee
that the text has been formatted absolutely correctly, although I have tested it
fairly thoroughly!

Further Information
-------------------
All Magnetic Scrolls games came with additional reading material and objects
that set the atmosphere for the adventure. Some of this material is included in
the ZIP file. You can download the material for The Pawn and other Magnetic
Scrolls games from The Magnetic Scrolls Memorial at this URL:
